smoothes skin, but also dries it out

Pros: smoothes texture, removes makeup well, acne and fungal acne fighting, minimizes pores, prevents and treats breakouts
*Cons: *drying

*Consistency: *Pumps out as a stiff gel - almost like a hair gel consistency. Very foamy when massaged into wet skin. I suggest using a pea sized amount rather than a pump of the product due to this. Has a fruity scent, blueberries I assume. Glow recipe's signature is to scent their products like the fruit it's based on.

This product is fantastic at removing makeup, oils, fighting acne and fungal acne, and just giving you that lovely smooth skin. I do recommend removing makeup with the double cleansing method, but on a lazy night I've removed my makeup with this cleanser in one-go and it worked fine. I've done this a few times just to be sure, with differing amounts of makeup - and every time it's worked beautifully. Still, you should double cleanse. But in a pinch, this cleanser is great. Oils on your skin can exacerbate pores, acne, and fungal acne - which is why this cleanser ends up creating such smooth skin, it cleanses it off very well. This isn't exactly a good thing, but it might be for some (ie: oily skinned, fungal acne / acne flare ups, textured skin, ect). It's mildly exfoliating but gentle - unlike other cleansers I've used with acids, this cleanser does not cause a burning sensation on the skin. It seems to be very gentle on the skin barrier despite what I will say below. It's fungal acne safe and performs beautifully in clearing it out, along with bacterial acne.

The only downside to this product is that it is QUITE drying. I haven't experienced any flaking, rashes, or burning. So it actually is quite gentle, I don't feel the usual signs of my skin barrier screaming for mercy. Nor does it cause any inflammatory responses in my skin. For someone whose quite cleanser sensitive,I actually don't find this product aggravating at all - which is more than I can say for other cleansers touted for being "gentle" and "hydrating". But I do notice that even with my extremely hydrating routine - my skin feels dry. I'm talking layers of hydration + moisturizer + occlusives. And my skin still feels dry after all those products sink in. This is probably the only downside to this product. My skin is typically dry and dehydrated right now, so honestly all cleansers left me feeling this way. I hadn't thought that it was this cleanser's fault in particular until I read the last review. A double-edged sword -- smoothing and breakout clearing / preventing....but drying. For me it's not too uncomfortable. But for others I think it might be damaging.

But if I'm being honest - trying to thwart the texture on my skin from fungal acne has been difficult until I started using this product. My skin is so smooth and poreless, despite being dry. I want to continue using this product but the dryness around my aging eyes is telling me otherwise. Great product if your skin can handle it, it really will give you that glass skin look - just be sure to hydrate and moisturize HEAVILY. Unfortunately fungal acne prevents me from using such heavily moisturizing products. So once I'm done with this product, I will not repurchasing. Incredible cleanser though.

THE single worst thing I have ever put on my face, and I used to make DIY lemon sugar scrubs.

I would give this negative stars if I could.

Sephora took down my review, but other folks on the skincareaddict subreddit confirmed this as well--this product is a NIGHTMARE.

Looking through the ingredients list, I can't find the culprit. But after using this product for a week, I started to become a reptile. At first I couldn't see the patches, though I could feel them. It wasn't dead skin. Have you ever used Mario Badescu's drying lotion (another product I hate)? Imagine the feeling of your skin the next day, but in a patch the size of your palm, right over the nodes of your neck. I could feel them. They were thick, rough, and scaly. They didn't flake off. In a moment of insanity I peeled some of it off (gagging SORRY) and it hurt. It was sooo thick.

I stopped using the cleanser immediately but the symptoms progressed for about two weeks after I stopped using it. The patches got bigger. Then there were patches on my chin, then around my nose, then between my eyebrows.... AND ON MY EYELIDS, which I am soo careful not to scrub or dry out.

Here's a picture of the eczema on my eyelid. Some of it would flake off, but there was also a huge thick patch which felt like armadillo skin running from my brow to my waterline.

A combination of azelaic acid and lactic acid helped me exfoliate the patches off, but it took weeks to heal. This was absolutely 100% the cause, as confirmed by several people on Reddit. But the reviews on Sephora are mostly positive, and even the negative ones do not express the extent to which this really fucked up my skin. I'm not even that dry, I'm basically balanced, and I'm not normally super reactive! Additionally, I use so many moisturizing factors in my routine--every night I use mucin, hyaluronic acid, a great moisturizer, so my skin doesn't even feel dry to the touch.

I will never buy a product from the Glow Recipe again. I don't care if this was a fluke, or if the rest of their products are great, the fact that my review was taken down in conjunction with the fact that none of the reviews at the point of sale reflect what seems to be a relatively common experience with this product indicates to me that some very uncool things might be happening with the company.
