SENSORYZero White Cast
The fully transparent gel formula blends invisibly into all skin tones — no chalky residue, no ghostly finish, even on deeper complexions.
Flawless Makeup Primer
Silicone crosspolymers create a velvety, pore-blurring surface that grips makeup and keeps it in place all day without pilling or balling up.
Water & Sweat Resistant
Clinically tested for up to 80 minutes of water and sweat resistance, making it reliable for outdoor activities, workouts, and humid climates.
True Broad Spectrum
Four-filter chemical UV system covers both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays) across the full spectrum — not just surface-level protection.
Oxybenzone-Free Formula
Formulated without oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), a controversial chemical sunscreen agent flagged by EWG and the FDA for potential hormone disruption.
Antioxidant-Boosted
Dual forms of Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate + Tocopherol) neutralize free radical damage from UV exposure, adding a layer of anti-aging defense.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEThis sunscreen contains Homosalate (12%), which has shown potential weak estrogenic activity in in-vitro studies. Most dermatologists still recommend daily SPF use during pregnancy as the benefit of UV protection far outweighs the theoretical risk — but if you prefer to avoid chemical filters during pregnancy, consider a mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) alternative. Consult your OB-GYN for personalized guidance.
This formula contains several ingredients that can feed Malassezia yeast and potentially trigger fungal acne breakouts: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (C8/C10 fatty acids), Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate (ester), Dicaprylyl Carbonate (ester), Jojoba Esters, and Shea Butter. If you suffer from fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis), choose a mineral-filter sunscreen formulated without fatty acid esters.
Does not contain benzophenone-3 (oxybenzone), a chemical UV filter that the FDA and EWG have flagged for potential endocrine disruption and environmental harm to coral reefs. This makes it more reef-conscious than many conventional sunscreens.
Contains absolutely no added fragrances or masking scents, significantly reducing the risk of contact dermatitis and irritation for sensitive skin types. A major plus for those with reactive or eczema-prone skin.
Free from parabens and common sensitizing preservatives such as methylisothiazolinone (MI/MCI). Suitable for those with preservative sensitivities.
The silicone-heavy base and oil-free formulation keep the comedogenic rating very low at 1/5. While Shea Butter and Jojoba Esters are present, their concentrations are low enough that clogged pores are unlikely for most skin types. Safe for acne-prone skin in the vast majority of users.
Trader Joe's does not conduct animal testing on its personal care products. The brand is widely recognized in the cruelty-free community as not testing on animals.
Fully compatible with retinol, AHAs, and BHAs. Apply this sunscreen as the final step of your morning skincare routine, after serums and moisturizer. It does not contain any ingredients that would interact negatively with common actives.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSAvobenzone 3%Proven
The only globally available chemical sunscreen agent offering true broad-spectrum UVA protection. Avobenzone absorbs UVA rays from 310–400 nm with peak protection at 360 nm, making it the gold standard for UVA filtration in the US market, where newer-generation UVA filters like Tinosorb have not yet received FDA approval.
- UV Range: UVA 310–400 nm (peak at 360 nm)
- Mechanism: Absorbs UV energy and converts it to heat energy harmlessly released from skin
- Photostability: Partially photolabile — loses up to 36% UV absorption after 1 hour of sunlight; stabilized in this formula by Octocrylene
- Regulatory: FDA-approved at max 3% (US); approved globally up to 5% (EU/Japan)
Homosalate 12%Proven
A UVB-filtering chemical sunscreen used at its maximum permitted US concentration of 12%. Homosalate is a liquid at room temperature, which serves an important formulation role: it dissolves and solubilizes solid UV filters (like Avobenzone), enabling the smooth, gel-like texture of this formula. It is one of the highest-concentration actives in this sunscreen.
- UV Range: UVB 290–315 nm (peak at 306 nm)
- Photostability: Moderate — loses ~10% SPF protection after 45 minutes of UV exposure
- Max Allowed: 10% in EU; 12% in US; 10% in Japan
- Solubilizer Role: Liquid state at room temperature makes it excellent for dissolving other UV filter powders
Octisalate (Ethylhexyl Salicylate) 5%Proven
A UVB sunscreen agent that works synergistically with other UV filters to enhance overall SPF. Octisalate is prized for its excellent safety profile, good photostability, and its ability to improve the water resistance of sunscreen formulations — a key reason this product maintains its 80-minute water-resistance claim.
- UV Range: UVB 280–320 nm (peak at 306 nm)
- Photostability: Good — loses only ~10% SPF protection after 95 minutes of sun exposure
- Water Resistance Aid: Helps bind the formula to skin, improving wash-off resistance
- Max Allowed: 5% in both US and EU
Octocrylene 6%Proven
A dual-function UVB/UVA-II filter and the critical photostabilizer for Avobenzone in this formula. Octocrylene's primary value here is not its standalone UV filtration, but its ability to protect Avobenzone from UV-induced degradation — extending the effective protection window of the product and maintaining SPF integrity throughout the day.
- UV Range: UVB 280–320 nm + UVA II (peak at 304 nm)
- Key Role: Photostabilizes Avobenzone — prevents Avobenzone degradation under UV exposure
- Water Resistance: Also contributes to the product's water and sweat resistance
- Max Allowed: 10% in US; 10% in EU; 10% in Japan
Dimethicone Crosspolymer + Polymethylsilsesquioxane BaseProven
The silicone backbone of this formula responsible for its signature velvet, pore-blurring feel. Dimethicone Crosspolymer is a silicone elastomer that creates the bouncy, skin-smoothing texture, while Polymethylsilsesquioxane is a micro-fine silicone powder that provides an immediate blurring effect and a soft-focus matte finish — the same technology found in luxury primers and high-end foundations.
- Texture Function: Creates the clear gel consistency and the velvet-soft skin feel
- Primer Effect: Fills fine lines and pores optically, creating a smooth canvas for makeup
- Non-Comedogenic: Silicones sit on top of skin and do not penetrate pores, rating 1/5 on comedogenicity scales
Silica Low-MidProven
A finely-milled mineral powder with exceptional oil-absorbing capacity. Silica is the key oil-control ingredient in this formula, soaking up excess sebum and preventing the greasy, shiny look that plagues many sunscreen wearers. It also contributes to the natural matte finish and helps keep the product feeling fresh throughout the day.
- Primary Role: Sebum absorption — keeps skin matte and shine-free for hours
- Texture Agent: Provides a dry, powdery slip without chalky appearance
- Sensitivity: Extremely well-tolerated; rarely irritating even for the most reactive skin
Tocopheryl Acetate + Tocopherol (Vitamin E) LowProven
Dual forms of Vitamin E provide a meaningful antioxidant boost to this formula. Tocopheryl Acetate (the stable ester form) converts to active Tocopherol on the skin, while free Tocopherol provides immediate antioxidant action. Together, they help neutralize reactive oxygen species (free radicals) generated by UV exposure — adding an anti-aging, photo-protective layer beyond the SPF filters themselves.
- Antioxidant Role: Neutralizes free radicals produced by UV, pollution, and environmental stress
- Skin Benefit: Supports barrier function, reduces inflammation from UV exposure
- Synergy: Vitamin E regenerates Vitamin C, making it extra valuable when used alongside Vitamin C serums in the AM routine
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter LowPromising
Rich in fatty acids and vitamins, Shea Butter contributes a subtle moisturizing and emollient effect to the formula, preventing the tight or stripped feeling that some chemical sunscreens can cause. At its low concentration in this formula, it provides comfort without making the product feel heavy or greasy.
- Key Fatty Acids: Oleic (40–60%), Stearic (20–50%), Linoleic (3–11%)
- Skin Benefit: Emollient, barrier-supportive, mild anti-inflammatory properties
- Comedogenic Rating: 0/5 — one of the few butters that is considered non-comedogenic

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply as the very last step of your AM skincare routine, at least 15 minutes before sun exposure. Do not mix into moisturizer — apply directly to skin as a distinct layer. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors. Skip in PM routine.
How to use
HOW TO USEComplete Your Skincare Routine First
Apply your cleanser, toner, serums, treatments, and moisturizer as usual. Allow your moisturizer to absorb for 30–60 seconds before applying sunscreen. The sunscreen should always be the final skincare step — never mix it into other products.
Dispense a Generous Amount
Squeeze approximately a nickel-sized amount (or 1/4 teaspoon) onto your fingertips. The AAD recommends using enough product to fill a shot glass for the full face and neck — undershooting the amount significantly reduces effective SPF. This product spreads easily, so don't be shy.
Apply 15 Minutes Before Sun Exposure
Spread evenly across your entire face, neck, and ears using upward circular motions. Chemical sunscreens require a brief absorption window to activate — apply at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors. The gel will turn completely invisible within 30 seconds of buffing.
Apply Makeup Over It (Optional)
Once the sunscreen has set (about 30 seconds), you can apply foundation, concealer, or other makeup products directly on top. The silicone base creates a grip for makeup, reducing migration and increasing wear time. No primer needed — this sunscreen IS the primer.
Reapply Every 2 Hours Outdoors
No sunscreen provides all-day protection from a single application. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors, and immediately after swimming or profuse sweating — even though the formula is water and sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes. For midday reapplication over makeup, consider a setting spray SPF or powder SPF.
Who is it for?
WHOPerfect for you if:
- You have oily, combination, or normal skin looking for a matte finish
- You struggle with sunscreens that pill or ball up under makeup
- You want a no-white-cast formula that works across all skin tones
- You're looking for an affordable alternative to luxury sunscreen primers
- You need a fragrance-free option for reactive or sensitive skin
- You want a lightweight SPF that you can wear every single day without discomfort
- You prefer the feel of silicone-based primers in your routine
Consider alternatives if:
- You have confirmed fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis)
- You are pregnant and prefer to avoid chemical UV filters entirely
- You have very dry skin that needs intense moisture from your SPF
- You prefer physical/mineral-only sunscreens (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide)
- You need higher than SPF 40 for extended outdoor exposure or high-altitude activities
- You dislike silicone-based textures or have a known silicone sensitivity
Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESThis is where this sunscreen truly shines. The oil-free, silicone-based formula with Silica oil absorption keeps the T-zone matte all day without any greasy breakthrough. One of the best sunscreens available for oily skin at any price point.
Works well for dry skin types, though the matte finish may feel slightly tight on very dry areas. Apply a rich moisturizer underneath and allow it to fully absorb before applying. The Jojoba Esters and Shea Butter add a touch of emollience that prevents a stripped feeling.
Ideal for combination skin. Controls shine and excess oil in the T-zone without drying out normal-to-dry cheeks. The gel consistency balances well across multiple zones and doesn't require different products for different facial areas.
Fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free — a strong baseline for sensitive skin. However, chemical UV filters (particularly Octisalate) can occasionally cause reactions in highly reactive skin. Patch test before full facial application if you have a history of sunscreen sensitivity.
Non-comedogenic formula (1/5) with an oil-free base — generally well-tolerated by acne-prone skin. The silicone matrix does not clog pores. However, those with concurrent fungal acne should avoid this formula due to fatty ester ingredients. Excellent for non-fungal acne or comedonal acne.
Near-perfect match for normal skin. Applies smoothly, absorbs quickly, leaves a gorgeous natural matte finish, and layers flawlessly under makeup. Daily use feels effortless and lightweight — no adjustment period needed.

DUPES
Nearly identical active ingredient profile (Avobenzone + Homosalate + Octisalate + Octocrylene) with higher SPF 55 at a comparable price. Dry-Touch technology delivers a similar matte finish, though the silicone content is lower so the primer blurring effect is less pronounced. Widely available at all major retailers — no TJ's store required.
A dermatologist-favorite with a similar lightweight, clear finish and zero white cast. EltaMD UV Clear adds Niacinamide (5%) for added anti-inflammatory and brightening benefits — making it superior for acne-prone and sensitive skin. Uses Zinc Oxide + Octinoxate for a hybrid physical-chemical approach. At 4–5x the price, it's the "if money were no object" upgrade from TJ's formula.
A French pharmacy favorite engineered specifically for oily, acne-prone skin. SPF 60 provides higher UV filtration, with a Cell-Ox Shield technology combining antioxidants with UV filters. The Mexoryl SX filter system (not available in all US formulas) provides superior UVA protection. Slightly more sophisticated formula but at 3x the TJ's price with a comparable matte finish.

Storage & shelf life
12 MONTHS12 months after opening. Chemical UV filters degrade with exposure to light, air, and heat — discard and replace after one year of opening even if product remains. Degraded filters provide significantly less UV protection than the label states.
Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not leave in a hot car or direct sun exposure — high temperatures degrade chemical UV filters and destabilize the silicone emulsion. Refrigeration is not required or recommended.
Flexible squeeze tube with a narrow tip for controlled dispensing. The tube packaging minimizes air exposure compared to jar packaging, helping preserve the UV filter stability. The distinctive salmon-pink tube is lightweight and easy to squeeze to the last drop.
Yes — 50 mL (1.7 fl oz) is well under the TSA 100 mL / 3.4 oz carry-on liquid limit. Fits easily in a quart-sized toiletry bag. The squeeze tube is compact and leak-resistant, making it ideal for travel, gym bags, and daily commuting.
Frequently asked questions
FAQThis sunscreen requires caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It contains Homosalate (12%), which has shown potential weak estrogenic activity in laboratory studies, though no definitive human clinical studies have confirmed harm at typical topical use levels. The other chemical filters — Avobenzone, Octisalate, and Octocrylene — have minimal safety concerns at regulated concentrations. Most dermatologists and the American Academy of Dermatology still recommend using sunscreen daily during pregnancy, as unprotected UV exposure carries documented risks (melasma, increased skin cancer risk). However, if you prefer to minimize chemical filter exposure during pregnancy, consider a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide as your active ingredients. Always consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist for personalized guidance.
No — this sunscreen is not considered fungal acne safe. The formula contains several ingredients that can feed Malassezia yeast and potentially trigger or worsen fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis): Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (medium-chain fatty acids, C8/C10), Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate (fatty acid ester), Dicaprylyl Carbonate (C8 ester), Jojoba Esters (lipid-rich wax esters), and Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (fatty acids). If you have active fungal acne, this product may exacerbate breakouts. Fungal-acne-safe sunscreen alternatives include EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, Vanicream Broad Spectrum SPF 50+, or mineral-based sunscreens with simple, ester-free formulas.
Yes — this sunscreen is fully compatible with all common skincare actives including retinol, Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid), and BHAs (salicylic acid). Apply your actives first as part of your skincare routine, allow them to absorb, then apply this sunscreen as the final step before makeup. There are no known interactions between this sunscreen's ingredients and these actives. In fact, daily SPF is especially critical when using retinol or AHAs, as these ingredients increase photosensitivity — making this pairing not just safe but strongly recommended.
This sunscreen is best suited for oily, combination, and normal skin types. Its oil-free, silicone-based formula with Silica oil absorption excels at controlling shine and maintaining a matte finish throughout the day — making it exceptional for oily and T-zone-prone skin. Dry skin types can use it successfully by layering a rich moisturizer underneath first, but the matte finish may feel slightly tight on very dry areas. It is not recommended for those with fungal acne (any skin type), and those with extremely sensitive skin should patch test first due to the chemical UV filter content.
The cosmetic results — the invisible application, velvet texture, and primer effect — are immediate from Day 1. For skin health and anti-aging benefits, sunscreen works as prevention rather than correction: consistent daily use over weeks and months prevents new sun damage (fine lines, hyperpigmentation, loss of elasticity) from developing. Within 4–8 weeks of daily use, many users report a more even skin tone as existing sun-triggered inflammation subsides and new spots stop forming. Over 3–6 months of consistent daily application, measurable improvements in skin texture, tone evenness, and reduction in new photoaging markers are typically observed.
This sunscreen belongs as the very last step of your morning skincare routine, applied after all serums, treatments, and moisturizers have fully absorbed into the skin. The recommended order is: Cleanser → Toner (if used) → Vitamin C or other antioxidant serum → Treatment serums → Eye cream → Moisturizer → This Sunscreen (SPF 40) → Makeup (optional). Never mix this sunscreen into your moisturizer or foundation — it must be applied as a distinct, uniform layer to maintain its SPF efficacy. Do not use in your PM (nighttime) routine.
This sunscreen has a comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5, making it very unlikely to clog pores for the vast majority of users. The formula is explicitly oil-free, and the silicone-based matrix (Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Polymethylsilsesquioxane) sits on top of the skin rather than penetrating into pores. Silica absorbs excess oil from the skin surface, further reducing pore-congesting potential. The small amounts of Jojoba Esters and Shea Butter present are at concentrations too low to cause significant comedogenic issues in most people. Thousands of users with acne-prone skin report no pore-clogging from this formula.
This sunscreen has a period after opening (PAO) of 12 months. Chemical UV filters such as Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, and Octocrylene degrade over time when exposed to light, air, and heat — this means an opened bottle should be replaced after one year even if product remains. Using degraded sunscreen provides significantly less UV protection than stated on the label. To maximize shelf life, store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and do not leave in a hot car or bathroom with high humidity. The 50 mL size, used daily on the face and neck with the recommended amount (~1/4 teaspoon), will typically last approximately 45–60 days with consistent daily use.
Verdict: Trader Joe's Daily Facial Sunscreen SPF 40 is one of the most impressive value propositions in the entire sunscreen category. At under $10 in-store, it delivers a silicone-based, invisible-finish formula that directly rivals the beloved Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen at a quarter of the price — using an almost identical active ingredient system. The texture is genuinely luxurious: a clear gel that disappears completely into skin in seconds, leaving a velvety, pore-blurring matte finish that works as a legitimate makeup primer. For oily, combination, and normal skin types who want daily SPF that doesn't interfere with their makeup routine, this is an easy recommendation. The main caveats are its lack of fungal acne safety (due to fatty ester ingredients), the mild Homosalate concern for pregnancy-conscious users, and its occasional scarcity in-store. For everyone else, this is a must-have daily essential that earns its cult status in the skincare community.

Quick product notes are a great way to check if a product is free from commonly avoided ingredients by skincare enthusiasts. These preferences come about for different reasons depending on the ingredient such as personal experiences, sensitivities, health preferences & etc.
Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
