Safety & compatibility
SAFENo retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreens. All key actives (Bisabolol, plant oils, Calendula, Vitamin E) are considered safe during pregnancy. Always consult your healthcare provider.
Contains Sesamum Indicum Seed Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter, Myristyl Myristate, and Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil — fatty acids that can feed Malassezia yeast. Not recommended for fungal acne-prone skin.
Myristyl Myristate has a high individual comedogenic rating (5/5), but is diluted in the formula. Sesame Seed Oil (refined: 1/5) and Shea Butter (0-2/5) keep the overall rating low. Suitable for most skin but patch test recommended for acne-prone skin.
Contains natural essential oils (Citrus Nobilis, Anthemis Nobilis, Pelargonium Graveolens, Cinnamomum Camphora) and Parfum. Free from synthetic fragrance. Note: contains Citronellol, Limonene, and Linalool — naturally occurring fragrance components that may cause sensitivity in very reactive individuals.
Free from retinoids, AHAs at active concentrations, benzoyl peroxide, and strong exfoliants. The Citric Acid is present only as a pH adjuster, not as an exfoliant. Safe for daily use morning and night.
Dermatologist tested and approved. Contains no parabens, sulphates, glycols, silicones, mineral oils, or synthetic colours. Formulated specifically for skin prone to redness, dryness, itchiness, and irritation.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSWater (Aqua) ~50–60%Base
The primary solvent and base of this emulsion. Neutral carrier that allows all active and functional ingredients to be delivered to the skin in a stable, spreadable cream form.
- Function: Solvent, emulsion base, hydration vehicle
- Safety: Universally safe, non-reactive
Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate ~5–10%Proven
A lightweight, non-greasy emollient ester derived from cetearyl alcohol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid. It gives the cleansing milk its signature silky slip, conditions the skin, and helps gently emulsify and lift away surface impurities and light makeup without water stripping.
- Comedogenicity: 1/5 — very low clogging potential
- Function: Emollient, texture enhancer, solubiliser of oily impurities
- Skin feel: Creates a non-occlusive skin-conditioning film
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride ~3–5%Proven
Derived from coconut oil and glycerin, this is one of the most skin-compatible emollients in cosmetics. It mimics the skin's own sebum components, replenishes moisture, and acts as an effective solvent for oil-soluble actives including Vitamin E.
- Comedogenicity: 0–1/5 — essentially non-comedogenic
- Source: Medium-chain triglycerides from fractionated coconut oil
- Benefit: Rapidly absorbed; excellent carrier for antioxidants
Ribes Nigrum (Blackcurrant) Seed Oil ~1–3%Proven
Cold-pressed from non-GMO Black Currant plants cultivated in Poland using sustainable supercritical CO2 extraction. This is REN's hero barrier-repair active in the Evercalm line — exceptionally rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), Omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, and Omega-6 linoleic acid. Anthocyanin antioxidants protect skin cells from oxidative damage.
- GLA content: ~15–20% — one of the richest plant sources of GLA
- Function: Barrier repair, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, skin-softening
- Research: GLA supplementation shown to reduce TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and improve skin elasticity
- Omega profile: Omega-3 (ALA ~14%), Omega-6 (LA ~47%), Omega-6 (GLA ~17%)
Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil ~1–2%Proven
A light, non-fragrant plant oil rich in linoleic acid (omega-6, ~65%) which helps maintain the skin's protective barrier and soothes dryness. Sunflower oil has been shown in clinical studies to support barrier integrity in neonates and adults with compromised skin.
- Linoleic acid content: ~65% — clinically beneficial for barrier function
- Comedogenicity: 0/5
- Note: May not be suitable for fungal acne-prone skin due to C18 fatty acid content
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter ~1–3%Proven
One of the most researched natural emollients. Shea butter is rich in stearic acid, oleic acid, and a unique unsaponifiable fraction containing triterpene alcohols, Vitamin E, and phytosterols. It deeply conditions, soothes inflammation, and helps protect skin from environmental stressors including UV and wind damage.
- Unsaponifiable fraction: ~7–12% — unusually high, responsible for skin-healing benefits
- Anti-inflammatory: Triterpene esters shown to reduce skin inflammation in peer-reviewed research
- Comedogenicity: 0–2/5
Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Fruit Extract ~0.5–1%Proven
Wild-harvested from Finland, Baltic States, and other regions. Sea Buckthorn is one of the only plant sources of Omega-7 (palmitoleic acid), a fatty acid naturally found in human skin sebum. Supports skin firmness, hydration, and regeneration. Rich in Vitamins C, E, and carotenoids.
- Omega-7 content: ~32–40% palmitoleic acid — unique skin-identical fatty acid
- Carotenoids: Beta-carotene and zeaxanthin provide antioxidant activity
- Research: Shown to improve skin elasticity and moisture retention in clinical studies
Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract ~0.5–1%Proven
Extracted from marigold flowers, Calendula is a dermatology-approved soothing botanical with documented anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and skin-calming properties. Contains flavonoids (quercetin, isorhamnetin), triterpene saponins, and carotenoids.
- Key actives: Flavonoids reduce inflammatory mediators; triterpenoids support healing
- Clinical use: Widely used in dermatology for eczema, radiation dermatitis, and nappy rash
- EWG Safety Rating: 1/10 — among the safest botanical extracts
Bisabolol ~0.1–0.5%Proven
Alpha-Bisabolol, the primary active component of German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), is one of the most scientifically validated skin-soothing ingredients available. It blocks inflammatory signalling pathways, reduces hyperpigmentation, and enhances penetration of co-applied ingredients. Also demonstrates mild antimicrobial properties extending product stability.
- Mechanism: Inhibits NF-κB inflammatory pathway; reduces prostaglandin synthesis
- Penetration enhancement: Increases absorption of adjacent actives by up to 50% in some studies
- Antioxidant: Scavenges free radicals; protects against UV-induced damage
Foeniculum Vulgare (Fennel) Fruit Extract ~0.1–0.5%Promising
REN highlights this ingredient prominently in the Evercalm line for its anti-pollution activity. Fennel seed contains peroxidase enzymes and flavonoids including quercetin and kaempferol, which help neutralise reactive oxygen species generated by airborne pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide.
- Peroxidase enzymes: Catalyse breakdown of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides from pollution
- Anethole content: Primary phenylpropanoid with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
- Application: Anti-urban-pollution skincare, barrier defence
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) ~0.1–0.5%Proven
Natural-source Vitamin E functioning as both a potent lipid-soluble antioxidant and a skin-conditioning emollient. Protects the skin from UV-induced oxidative stress, stabilises the other unsaturated fatty acids in the formula, and helps maintain the skin's protective film.
- Antioxidant mechanism: Neutralises singlet oxygen and lipid peroxyl radicals in cell membranes
- Formula role: Also acts as natural preservative booster, extending shelf life of plant oils
- Synergy: Works best when combined with Vitamin C (not present here) and carotenoids from Sea Buckthorn
Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract ~0.1%Promising
A natural antioxidant extract used here primarily as a preservation booster to protect the formula's rich oils from oxidative rancidity, while also delivering minor skin-brightening and circulatory benefits. Contains rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid.
- Primary role: Natural antioxidant preservative — extends shelf life of unsaturated oils
- Rosmarinic acid: Potent antioxidant with documented anti-inflammatory properties
Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate ~0.5–1%Proven
An amino acid-based emulsifier derived from glutamic acid (found in soy, wheat, or corn). Unlike traditional surfactant-based emulsifiers, it is exceptionally mild and skin-compatible. It stabilises the oil-water emulsion and acts as a gentle cleansing surfactant.
- Origin: Naturally-derived amino acid surfactant
- Mildness: Lower irritation potential than conventional surfactants such as SLS or SLES
- EWG rating: 1/10 — very safe

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEStep 1 of your skincare routine — use as a standalone morning cleanser or as a second cleanse at night after an oil cleanser or micellar water to remove heavy makeup and SPF.
How to use
HOW TO USEDampen Your Hands & Face
Wet your hands and face with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can exacerbate sensitivity and redness in reactive skin types.
Dispense & Apply
Squeeze a small amount (about a 10p coin size) onto your fingertips and gently massage over face and neck in soft circular motions. The creamy milk will emulsify on contact with skin.
Massage for 30–60 Seconds
Work the product gently across all areas — including around the nose, jaw, and hairline. The non-foaming formula will not lather but will feel cushioning and comfortable.
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse well with lukewarm water or remove using a warm, damp reusable cotton round or muslin cloth. Pat dry — never rub — with a clean soft towel.
Continue Your Routine
Follow immediately with toner, serum, and moisturiser. For heavy makeup or SPF removal, consider double cleansing — use a dedicated oil cleanser or micellar water first, then follow with this product.
Who is it for?
WHOPerfect for you if:
- You have sensitive, reactive, or easily irritated skin
- Your skin feels tight, dry, or uncomfortable after cleansing
- You suffer from rosacea, eczema, or general redness
- You prefer a gentle, non-foaming cleansing experience
- You want a cleanser safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding
- You value sustainably sourced botanicals and eco-friendly packaging
- You want a clinically proven, dermatologist-approved formula
Consider alternatives if:
- You have fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) — contains problematic fatty acids
- You wear heavy, full-coverage foundation or waterproof makeup daily — may need a dedicated oil cleanser first
- You have very oily skin and prefer a foaming, pore-clearing cleanser
- You are highly sensitive to essential oil fragrances (contains Pelargonium, Citrus Nobilis, etc.)
- You are looking for an active exfoliating cleanser
Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESSpecially formulated for dry and parched skin. The oil-rich formula with Shea Butter, Sesame Oil, and Blackcurrant Seed Oil delivers emolliency during cleansing, leaving skin soft and never tight or stripped.
The primary target skin type. Bisabolol, Calendula, and fennel extract collectively calm reactivity. Dermatologist tested and shown to reduce visible redness in 82% of users within 7 days. Ideal for rosacea and eczema-prone skin.
Works well for combination skin, particularly as a morning cleanser when the skin has not accumulated heavy oils overnight. May feel slightly rich on the T-zone for some combination skin types in warm weather.
The creamy, oil-based formula may feel too heavy for persistently oily skin types. Those with oily skin who also experience sensitivity may find it effective as a gentle morning wash, but likely insufficient at controlling excess sebum during the day.
Not ideal for active breakout-prone or fungal acne skin due to the fatty acid profile. However, for those with dry, sensitive skin that occasionally experiences breakouts (rather than true acne-prone skin), the non-comedogenic emollients keep overall risk low. Patch test recommended.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESA fragrance-free, non-foaming milk cleanser with glycerin that shares the gentle, non-stripping philosophy. Less sophisticated botanical profile (no Blackcurrant or Sea Buckthorn), but dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, and significantly cheaper. Best for those who need gentleness without botanicals.
The classic dermatologist-recommended cleanser for sensitive skin. Similar non-foaming, non-stripping approach with a simple emollient base. Lacks the premium plant oils and antioxidant botanicals but is universally tolerated, widely accessible, and very affordable. Fragrance-free and genuinely fungal-acne safe.
A French pharmacy favourite with Niacinamide, Ceramides, and thermal spring water targeting sensitive skin. Fragrance-free, microbiome-friendly, and clinically proven. Frequently asked questions
FAQYes, the REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It contains no retinoids, salicylic acid (BHA), hydroquinone, or chemical UV filters — the primary ingredients of concern during pregnancy. All key actives (Bisabolol, plant oils, Calendula, Vitamin E, Sea Buckthorn) are botanically derived and are widely considered safe. The preservatives used (Phenoxyethanol and Sodium Dehydroacetate) are approved for cosmetic use. As always, consult your midwife or healthcare provider if you have specific concerns about any individual ingredient, particularly the natural essential oils (Pelargonium Graveolens, Citrus Nobilis, etc.) present in the formula.
No, this cleanser is not considered fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) safe. It contains several fatty acids that are known to feed Malassezia yeast, including: Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil (contains oleic acid C18:1), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (rich in stearic acid C18:0 and oleic acid C18:1), Myristyl Myristate (myristic acid C14:0), and Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil (C18 fatty acids). If you are dealing with active fungal acne or Malassezia folliculitis, you should choose a fragrance-free, fatty acid-free alternative such as Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser, La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Face Wash, or Avène Tolerance Extremely Gentle Cleanser instead.
Yes. This cleanser is a first-step, rinse-off product and is fully compatible with all active ingredients including retinol/retinoids, Vitamin C serums, AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), and niacinamide. Since it is rinsed away, it does not interfere with the activity of leave-on treatments that follow. In fact, its soothing formula (Bisabolol, Calendula) can help minimise any irritation or dryness that may arise from regular use of potent actives. If you use prescription retinoids, this gentle cleanser is particularly well-suited to maintaining skin comfort without compromising the efficacy of your treatment routine.
This cleanser is best suited for dry, sensitive, reactive, and delicate skin types. It was specifically formulated to address the needs of skin prone to redness, irritation, tightness, itchiness, eczema, and rosacea. It is also suitable for normal and combination skin types, particularly as a gentle morning cleanser. It is less ideal for oily or acne-prone skin due to its emollient, oil-rich formula, and it is not recommended for fungal acne-prone skin. Sensitive skin that experiences eczema flares, seasonal dryness, or post-procedure sensitivity will benefit most from this product.
Many users notice an immediate improvement in skin comfort and softness from the very first wash — with skin feeling less tight and more nourished compared to foaming or gel cleansers. Based on REN's independent consumer trial: 97% of users felt more comfortable skin after just 1 use, 94% agreed their skin felt less dry after 7 days, and 82% observed a reduction in visible redness after 7 days. For deeper barrier repair benefits (from the Blackcurrant Seed Oil, Sea Buckthorn, and Shea Butter), allow 4–6 weeks of consistent twice-daily use to see cumulative improvements in skin resilience and hydration retention.
This cleansing milk is always Step 1 of your skincare routine — it is the first product you apply to your skin in both your morning and evening routine. In the morning: cleanse with this milk, then apply toner, serum, moisturiser, and SPF. In the evening: if you wear heavy makeup or SPF, double cleanse — start with a dedicated oil cleanser or micellar water to break down products, then follow with this cleansing milk as your second cleanse to purify the skin. After cleansing, continue with the rest of your routine (toner → essence → serum → moisturiser). Do not use it after serums or moisturisers.
The overall comedogenic rating of this formula is approximately 2/5, which is considered low to moderate. Myristyl Myristate, an individual ingredient in the formula, has a standalone comedogenic rating of 5/5, but its comedogenic potential is significantly reduced when diluted within the full formula alongside low-comedogenic ingredients such as Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (0–1/5), Sunflower Oil (0/5), and Cetearyl Ethylhexanoate (1/5). Additionally, this is a rinse-off cleanser — meaning it is washed away rather than left on skin, which substantially reduces the likelihood of pore-clogging. For most users with normal to dry skin, this cleanser will not cause breakouts. Those with acne-prone skin should patch test first and consider alternatives if congestion occurs.
The Period After Opening (PAO) for REN Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Milk is 12 months — indicated by the open-jar symbol on the packaging. This means the product should be used within 12 months of first opening for optimal safety and efficacy. To extend the shelf life of your cleanser, store it in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat — avoid keeping it in a hot, humid bathroom if possible. The formula uses Phenoxyethanol and Sodium Dehydroacetate as preservatives, supported by natural antioxidants (Tocopherol and Rosemary Extract) to protect the plant oils from oxidative rancidity. With daily morning and evening use, a standard 150ml bottle typically lasts 2–3 months.
Verdict: The REN Clean Skincare Evercalm™ Gentle Cleansing Milk stands out as one of the most thoughtfully formulated sensitive-skin cleansers on the market. Where many cleansers claim gentleness but still strip the barrier, this one is clinically proven to deliver: 97% of users felt greater comfort, 94% less dryness, and 82% saw reduced redness within just 7 days. The combination of Arctic Blackcurrant Seed Oil (GLA-rich, sustainably CO2-extracted), Omega-7 Sea Buckthorn Berry Extract, anti-pollution Fennel Seed peroxidase enzymes, and dermatology-validated Bisabolol and Calendula represents a premium botanical approach that goes beyond typical cleansing milks. Its commitment to clean, eco-conscious formulation — no parabens, sulphates, silicones, mineral oil, or synthetic fragrance, plus recyclable PCR packaging — further sets it apart. The main caveats are its unsuitability for fungal acne-prone skin, potential heaviness for oily types, and natural essential oil scent that can be polarising. For its core audience — those with dry, reactive, sensitive, rosacea-prone, or eczema-prone skin — this is an outstanding daily companion and deserves its loyal following.
Product Overview
Quick product notes are a great way to check if a product is free from commonly avoided ingredients by skincare enthusiasts. These preferences come about for different reasons depending on the ingredient such as personal experiences, sensitivities, health preferences & etc.
Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you
Notable Effects & Ingredients
Why are some products great for some people and horrible for others? Well everyone has different skin types and different reactions to the same ingredients.
We've identified a range of ingredients that are commonly regarded as potentially good or bad for those with Dry, Oily/Acne-Prone or Sensitive skin.
A product that contains good or bad ingredients for your skin type doesn't always flat out make the entire product good or bad for your skin. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine your skins reaction.
One of the best ways to use this section is to troubleshoot products you've had bad experiences with in the past. Check if it contains any of the marked ingredients to point out suspect ingredients to avoid in the future!

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
