๐Ÿ”ฌ Ingredient Breakdown

๐Ÿซš Bongdong Ginger Water 10,051 ppm Proven

Sourced from Bongdong, a region in South Korea renowned for its high-quality ginger. Ginger extract contains gingerol and shogaol, potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that calm UV-irritated skin.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Gingerol inhibits COX-2 enzymes, reducing redness and inflammation triggered by UV exposure.
  • Antioxidant: Neutralizes free radicals generated by UV radiation, helping prevent premature photoaging.
  • Skin metabolism: Gingerol supports skin cell turnover and boosts circulation for a healthier complexion.
โœ…
Clinically tested: 27.9% skin soothing improvement after a single application.

โ˜€๏ธ Tinosorb S (Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine) UV Filter Proven

A next-generation broad-spectrum UV filter that absorbs both UVA and UVB radiation. Oil-soluble and highly photostable, meaning it does not degrade under sun exposure like older filters.

  • Broad spectrum: Covers both UVA (320โ€“400nm) and UVB (280โ€“320nm) wavelengths for complete protection.
  • Photostability: One of the most photostable UV filters available, maintaining protection throughout the day.
  • Safety: Minimal skin penetration and no estrogenic activity, unlike some older chemical filters.

โ˜€๏ธ Tinosorb M (Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol) UV Filter Proven

A hybrid organic/inorganic UV filter that both absorbs and reflects UV radiation. Its microfine particle form provides broad-spectrum protection with excellent photostability.

  • Dual mechanism: Absorbs and scatters UV light for enhanced protection across the full UV spectrum.
  • Boosts SPF: Stabilizes other UV filters in the formula, improving overall sunscreen performance.
  • Low penetration: Remains on the skin surface where it is most effective as a UV shield.

๐Ÿ’ง Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Soothing Agent Proven

A well-researched humectant and skin-soother that penetrates the skin and converts to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), supporting barrier repair and moisture retention.

  • Hydration: Acts as a humectant, attracting and binding water to the skin for lasting moisture.
  • Barrier repair: Stimulates lipid synthesis in the skin barrier, accelerating recovery from damage.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Clinically shown to reduce redness and irritation in compromised skin.

๐Ÿงฌ Ceramide Complex (NP, NS, AS, AP) Barrier Support Proven

Four types of ceramides that mimic the skin's natural lipid matrix. Combined with cholesterol and hydrogenated lecithin for optimal barrier integration.

  • Barrier function: Ceramides make up ~50% of the lipids in the skin's protective barrier layer.
  • Moisture lock: Prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL), keeping skin hydrated from within.
  • Synergy: The combination of multiple ceramide types plus cholesterol mimics the skin's natural lipid ratio.

โš—๏ธ Zinc PCA Sebum Control Promising

The zinc salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), a natural component of the skin's moisture factor. Regulates sebum production while providing antimicrobial and hydrating benefits.

  • Sebum regulation: Helps control excess oil production without over-drying the skin.
  • Antimicrobial: Zinc has natural antibacterial properties that can help prevent breakouts.
  • Hydrating: PCA is part of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF).

๐Ÿงช Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA) Exfoliant Proven

A lipophilic derivative of salicylic acid (lipo-hydroxy acid) that provides gentle exfoliation. More targeted than regular BHA, working primarily at the skin's surface for less irritation.

  • Gentle exfoliation: Loosens dead skin cells gradually without causing the stinging of regular salicylic acid.
  • Pore refining: Dissolves sebum plugs and smooths skin texture over time.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Retains the anti-inflammatory properties of salicylic acid at a gentler level.
โš ๏ธ
LHA is a salicylic acid derivative. While present at very low concentration here, those avoiding all salicylates during pregnancy should take note.

This Sunscreen

Makeup (Optional)

Apply as the final step of your skincare routine (before makeup). This sunscreen is hydrating enough to double as a light moisturizer for oily or combination skin types in warmer months.

๐Ÿ“ How to Use

1

Apply Generously

After completing your skincare routine, squeeze a generous amount (approximately a two-finger length) onto your fingertips.

2

Gently Dab Across Face

Dot the sunscreen across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Gently pat and press into the skin rather than rubbing to aid absorption and avoid disrupting previous layers.

3

Extend to Neck & Ears

Don't forget your neck, behind the ears, and any exposed areas. These zones are often overlooked but are highly susceptible to UV damage.

4

Reapply Every 2 Hours

Reapply every 2 hours during prolonged sun exposure, or immediately after sweating, swimming, or towel-drying. Chemical sunscreens degrade over time under UV light.

๐Ÿ‘ค Who Is It For?

โœ… Perfect for you if:

  • You have sensitive or easily irritated skin that reacts to most sunscreens
  • You want a silicone-free, ethanol-free chemical sunscreen
  • You need soothing benefits alongside UV protection
  • You prefer a dewy, hydrating finish without heavy residue
  • You follow a clean, vegan, or K-beauty skincare philosophy
  • You have dry to combination skin needing extra moisture

โŒ Consider alternatives if:

  • You have fungal acne (malassezia) โ€” this formula contains triggering esters
  • You prefer a completely matte finish (this has a dewy/natural glow)
  • You need a very large bottle โ€” only 40ml may not last long with daily reapplication
  • You want a mineral-only (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) sunscreen
  • You are pregnant and prefer to avoid all chemical UV filters

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Use with caution. This sunscreen contains chemical UV filters (Ethylhexyl Triazone, DHHB, Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M) and Capryloyl Salicylic Acid (LHA), a derivative of salicylic acid. While these are newer-generation filters with minimal skin penetration and the LHA is at a very low concentration, some dermatologists recommend pregnant and breastfeeding individuals avoid chemical sunscreens altogether. If you have concerns, consult your OB-GYN or switch to a mineral-only sunscreen during pregnancy.

No, this product is not fungal acne safe. It contains several ester-based emollients including Dibutyl Adipate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Glyceryl Stearate, and Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate. These esters can be metabolized by malassezia yeast and may trigger or worsen fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis). If you are prone to fungal acne, look for sunscreens specifically formulated without fatty acid esters and polysorbates.

Yes, and you should. Retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, and BHAs all make skin more sensitive to UV damage, making daily sunscreen essential. Apply your active serums first, allow them to absorb fully, then layer this sunscreen on top as the final step. Note that this sunscreen already contains a mild LHA (lipo-hydroxy acid), so monitor for any sensitivity if layering additional exfoliants underneath.

This sunscreen is best suited for dry, combination, and sensitive skin types. The triple hyaluronic acid and quad-ceramide complex provide excellent hydration, while the 0.00 irritation index makes it ideal for reactive skin. Oily skin types can use it as well โ€” Zinc PCA helps control sebum โ€” but the dewy finish may require a mattifying powder on top. It is recommended for all skin types recommended by the brand: dry, normal, combination, sensitive, and problem skin.

UV protection and soothing effects are immediate upon application. Improved hydration and skin comfort are typically noticed within the first week of daily use. Smoother texture and reduced skin reactivity develop over 2โ€“4 weeks as the ceramide complex strengthens your barrier. The most significant benefit โ€” prevention of new sun damage, dark spots, and premature aging โ€” becomes visible after 1โ€“3 months of consistent daily use.

Apply this sunscreen as the very last step of your morning skincare routine, after cleanser, toner, serum, and moisturizer. If you wear makeup, apply it before your primer or foundation. For oily or combination skin in humid weather, this sunscreen can double as a light moisturizer, allowing you to skip a separate moisturizer step. Always wait 1โ€“2 minutes after your previous step for proper absorption before applying sunscreen.

This sunscreen has a low comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5. It does not contain heavy oils, mineral oil, or highly comedogenic waxes. The formula is lightweight and water-based, making it unlikely to clog pores for most skin types. The inclusion of Zinc PCA actually helps regulate oil production, and LHA provides gentle exfoliation to keep pores clear. However, individual reactions vary โ€” if you are extremely acne-prone, patch test on a small area first.

The recommended Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months. Once opened, use the product within 12 months for optimal efficacy and safety. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the stability of the UV filters and active ingredients. The 40ml tube typically lasts 2โ€“4 weeks with proper daily application and reapplication, so you are unlikely to reach the 12-month shelf life before finishing it.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†
4.3 out of 5

Verdict: The Bonajour Ginger Aqua Relief Sun Cream is an excellent choice for anyone with sensitive or troubled skin seeking a clean, soothing sunscreen with serious UV protection. Its standout formula combines next-generation UV filters (Tinosorb S and M) with a potent cocktail of Bongdong ginger water, quad ceramides, triple hyaluronic acid, and panthenol โ€” delivering both protection and skincare in one step. The 0.00 irritation index and silicone-free, ethanol-free, fragrance-free formulation set it apart from most competitors. The main drawbacks are the small 40ml size (which increases cost per use), the non-fungal-acne-safe formula, and a dewy finish that may not suit very oily skin. Overall, it punches well above its weight class for ingredient quality and is a top-tier pick for the sensitive-skin K-beauty sunscreen category.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
