Ingredients Breakdown
Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract (Pycnogenol) 5%Proven
A standardized extract from French maritime pine bark, rich in procyanidins, bioflavonoids, and organic acids. One of the most well-researched botanical antioxidants with over 370 published studies and review articles.
- Antioxidant: Scavenges free radicals and reduces oxidative stress more effectively than vitamin C and vitamin E in some in-vitro studies.
- Collagen Support: Selectively binds to collagen and elastin proteins, protecting them from enzymatic degradation by free radicals.
- Vitamin C Synergy: Regenerates oxidized vitamin C to restore its biological activity, extending the efficacy of vitamin C serums.
- Clinical Study: A 2012 study showed that 12 weeks of pycnogenol supplementation increased skin hydration by 8% and improved elasticity in women aged 55–68.
Propanediol ~95%Proven
A natural, corn-derived solvent and hydrating agent that serves as the delivery base for the pycnogenol extract. It is an eco-certified alternative to propylene glycol, with superior skin-feel and moisturizing properties.
- Function: Acts as a solvent to dissolve and deliver pycnogenol; also provides light hydration and improves skin texture.
- Safety: Non-irritating, non-sensitizing, and Ecocert approved. Considered safe for all skin types including sensitive skin.
- Absorption: Enhances the penetration and absorption of active ingredients into the skin.

Safety Profile
Contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreen filters. Both ingredients (propanediol and pine bark extract) are considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always consult your doctor for personalized advice.
Free of fermented ingredients, fatty acids, esters, polysorbates, and oils that feed malassezia yeast. Confirmed fungal acne safe by SkinCarisma and SkinSort.
Neither ingredient is known to clog pores. No oils, waxes, or occlusive ingredients present. Extremely unlikely to cause breakouts.
Only 2 gentle ingredients, both well-tolerated. No known allergens, harsh actives, or sensitizers. Patch testing is still recommended for very reactive skin.
The deep red-orange colour from natural procyanidins may stain light-coloured fabrics, pillowcases, and towels. Wash hands after applying and allow full absorption before contact with fabric.
The Ordinary advises against using Pycnogenol 5% in the same routine as copper peptide products. Alternate AM/PM or use on different days.
Routine Position
Use AM and/or PM. Apply after water-based serums, before oils or heavier creams.
How to Use
Cleanse & Prep
Start with clean, dry skin. Apply any water-based serums first (e.g., hyaluronic acid, niacinamide).
Apply 2–3 Drops
Dispense 2–3 drops onto fingertips. The deep red colour is natural. Gently tap and press onto the face, spreading evenly. It absorbs very quickly.
Layer or Mix
Follow with an oil, moisturizer, or SPF. Alternatively, mix 2–3 drops directly into your moisturizer or vitamin C serum for an antioxidant boost.
Wash Hands
Wash hands immediately after application to avoid staining fabrics. Allow product to absorb for 30 seconds before layering next step.
Skin Type Compatibility
Oil-free and water-free. Absorbs instantly without adding shine. Pairs perfectly with a lightweight moisturizer or SPF.
Provides a subtle glow and hydration boost, but will need a richer moisturizer or oil layered on top for full hydration.
Lightweight enough for oily zones, hydrating enough for dry areas. Great all-over treatment.
Only 2 gentle ingredients, no fragrance, no common irritants. Anti-inflammatory properties of pycnogenol help calm reactive skin.
Comedogenic rating 0, fungal acne safe, no oils or pore-clogging ingredients. Antioxidant benefits without breakout risk.

Dupes & Alternatives
Same brand, same propanediol base, water-free format. Uses resveratrol and ferulic acid instead of pycnogenol. Comes in a larger 30ml bottle. Different antioxidant mechanism but similar overall purpose.
Also contains pine bark extract as the key active. More complex formula with added probiotics and hydrating agents. Slightly different texture and may not be fungal acne safe due to additional ingredients.
A comprehensive antioxidant serum with vitamin C, ferulic acid, CoQ10, and peptides. 25 ingredients vs. just 2. Silicone-based formula with richer texture. More anti-aging benefits but also more potential for sensitivity.

Product Overview
Quick product notes are a great way to check if a product is free from commonly avoided ingredients by skincare enthusiasts. These preferences come about for different reasons depending on the ingredient such as personal experiences, sensitivities, health preferences & etc.
Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
