SENSORY5 AOX Shield™ Antioxidant Complex
Proprietary blend of 5 antioxidants — Glycyrrhetinic Acid, Licochalcone A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate), and Oxynex ST — neutralizes free radicals and guards against long-term UV-induced skin damage.
Hyaluronic Acid + Humectant Complex
Sodium Hyaluronate combined with Butylene Glycol and Aloe Vera attracts and locks in skin's natural moisture, providing clinically demonstrated 8-hour all-day hydration with each application.
True Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Protection
Four-filter UV system — Avobenzone 3% (UVA), Homosalate 9% + Octisalate 4.5% + Octocrylene 9% (UVB/stabilization) — delivers comprehensive UVA1, UVA2, and UVB protection across the full UV spectrum.
Non-Comedogenic & Hypoallergenic
Developed with dermatologists and tested to confirm it won't clog pores. Free of fragrance, alcohol, dyes, oils, parabens, oxybenzone, and octinoxate — ideal for sensitive and reactive skin types.
Water Resistant Up to 80 Minutes
Withstands 80 minutes of swimming or sweating before reapplication is needed, making it suitable for active outdoor lifestyles, beach days, and sports without sacrificing hydration or protection.
Dermatologist Developed & HSA/FSA Eligible
Formulated in collaboration with dermatologists. Recognized as an HSA- and FSA-eligible product — a mark of confidence in its clinical value as preventive healthcare and sun protection.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains chemical UV filters including Homosalate, which has shown weak estrogenic activity in in-vitro studies, and Octocrylene. While no oxybenzone or octinoxate are present, many OB-GYNs and dermatologists still recommend mineral-only sunscreens (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) as the preferred choice during pregnancy as a precautionary measure. Consult your healthcare provider before use.
The formula does not contain fermented ingredients, polysorbates, or long-chain fatty acids (C11–C24) in ester form that are known to feed Malassezia yeast. C12–15 Alkyl Benzoate is a benzoate ester considered FA-safe. Suitable for fungal acne-prone skin.
Officially non-comedogenic per brand testing. Key emollients C12–15 Alkyl Benzoate and Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate have low comedogenic ratings. Safe for acne-prone skin and will not clog pores.
Contains zero added fragrance, essential oils, or colorants. Significantly reduces the risk of allergic contact dermatitis and irritation — important for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or reactive skin.
Contains no drying denatured alcohols (SD alcohol, ethanol). The formula uses skin-friendly humectant solvents (Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol) instead, maintaining the skin barrier rather than stripping it.
Does not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate — two sunscreen filters associated with potential hormonal disruption and reef ecosystem damage. This makes it a more environmentally and skin-conscientious choice.
Uses organic (chemical) UV filters that absorb UV energy and convert it to heat. Some individuals with very reactive or photosensitive skin may experience stinging or irritation from chemical filters. If you have eczema, rosacea, or extreme sensitivity, a mineral-only formula may be better tolerated.
Formulated without parabens, PABA, and phthalates — three ingredient categories frequently avoided by consumers seeking cleaner formulations. Suitable for those following a low-toxin skincare philosophy.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSAvobenzone 3.0%Proven
The gold standard of UVA chemical protection available in the United States. Avobenzone is the only broad UVA filter (310–400 nm, peak at 360 nm) approved globally and is the most widely used UVA sunscreen ingredient worldwide. At its maximum US-permitted concentration of 3%, it provides strong defense against UVA1 and UVA2 rays — those linked to photoaging, hyperpigmentation, and deeper skin damage.
- UV Range: UVA1 + UVA2 (310–400 nm), peak protection at 360 nm
- Stability: Photostabilized by Octocrylene (also present) and Diethylhexyl Syringylidenemalonate (Oxynex ST) — which prevents the typical 36% degradation seen with standalone avobenzone
- Safety Profile: Non-irritating, no known estrogenic activity — one of the safest chemical UVA filters available in the US market
- Max Concentration: 3% in the US; 5% in the EU
Homosalate 9.0%Proven
A UVB filter that also serves as a liquid solvent for dissolving other sunscreen actives like Avobenzone — crucial to achieving a smooth, spreadable lotion texture. At 9% (within the US maximum of 15%), it boosts UVB protection across the 295–315 nm range while enhancing the overall elegance of the formulation.
- UV Range: UVB (295–315 nm), peak protection at 306 nm
- Role: UVB absorber and solubilizer for Avobenzone — helps achieve a lightweight, non-greasy texture
- Max Concentration: 15% in the US; the EU restricts it to 10% (reviewing a potential reduction to 1.4%)
Octocrylene 9.0%Proven
A dual-purpose UVB filter and Avobenzone photostabilizer. Octocrylene absorbs UVB at 304 nm and significantly slows the photodegradation of Avobenzone, extending the product's UVA protective capacity throughout extended sun exposure. At 9%, it contributes meaningfully to both SPF value and formulation stability.
- UV Range: UVB (280–320 nm), peak absorption at 304 nm
- Key Function: Avobenzone photostabilizer — prevents UVA filter degradation in sunlight
- Max Concentration: 10% in the US; 10% in the EU
Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) ActiveProven
The sodium salt form of Hyaluronic Acid — a skin-identical humectant that can bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Sodium Hyaluronate has a smaller molecular size than native HA, allowing deeper penetration into the upper dermis for superior hydration. This is the backbone of the product's clinically demonstrated 8-hour moisture claim.
- Function: Humectant — draws and binds water into the skin from the environment and deeper skin layers
- Clinical Evidence: Hyaluronic acid supplementation (topical) has been shown in multiple studies to significantly improve skin hydration, elasticity, and smoothness
- Compatibility: Works synergistically with Butylene Glycol and Aloe Vera in this formula for layered moisture delivery
5 AOX Shield™ (Antioxidant Complex) ProprietaryProven
Eucerin's proprietary blend of five antioxidants formulated to neutralize UV-induced free radicals and defend against long-term photodamage: Glycyrrhetinic Acid (licorice root derivative, anti-inflammatory), Licochalcone A (from Glycyrrhiza Inflata Root Extract, potent antioxidant and soothing agent), Tocopherol (Vitamin E, lipid-soluble antioxidant), Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (stable Vitamin C, anti-acne and brightening), and Diethylhexyl Syringylidenemalonate (Oxynex ST, Avobenzone stabilizer and antioxidant).
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E): Lipid-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage; well-established in dermatological literature
- Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vitamin C): Stable, water-soluble Vitamin C derivative with antioxidant and anti-acne activity; converts to ascorbic acid upon skin application
- Glycyrrhetinic Acid: Anti-inflammatory derivative of licorice root; clinically studied for reducing redness and soothing reactive skin
- Licochalcone A: A chalcone extracted from Glycyrrhiza Inflata root with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties used in Eucerin's sensitive skin line
- Oxynex ST (Diethylhexyl Syringylidenemalonate): Multi-functional antioxidant and UV filter stabilizer derived from syringic acid
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice ActiveProven
Cold-pressed aloe vera gel provides a trifecta of benefits: soothing, hydrating, and anti-inflammatory. It contains acemannan polysaccharides, anthraquinones, and vitamins that calm stressed skin, reduce transient redness, and reinforce the skin barrier. Its presence elevates this product beyond a simple sunscreen into a genuine skin-conditioning daily lotion.
- Function: Humectant, soothing agent, and barrier-supporting active
- Key Compounds: Acemannan (hydration), polyphenols (antioxidant), zinc and selenium (skin repair support)
- Published Research: Multiple clinical trials confirm aloe vera's efficacy in improving skin hydration and reducing UV-induced erythema

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEAlways apply sunscreen as the last step in your AM skincare routine, after all serums and moisturizers have fully absorbed. For face use, apply 15 minutes before sun exposure. On days when this lotion provides sufficient hydration (most skin types), the separate moisturizer step can be skipped.
How to use
HOW TO USEComplete Your Skincare Routine First
Apply cleansers, toners, serums, and any spot treatments before sunscreen. Allow active ingredients (acids, retinol) to fully absorb — typically 3–5 minutes. Sunscreen must be the final skincare layer before makeup.
Apply Liberally 15 Minutes Before Sun Exposure
Shake the tube gently, then dispense a generous amount. For face and neck use about ¼ teaspoon (1.25 ml). For full-body coverage, the general recommendation is 1 oz (30 ml) — approximately one full shot glass. Don't skimp: applying too little significantly reduces the effective SPF.
Spread Evenly and Allow to Dry
Massage in circular motions until completely blended — the lotion absorbs in 30–60 seconds and dries clear with no white cast or greasy residue. For face use, it layers invisibly under makeup once dry.
Reapply Every 2 Hours (or After Water Exposure)
Reapply at least every 2 hours when outdoors. After 80 minutes of swimming or sweating, or immediately after towel-drying, reapply regardless of elapsed time. No sunscreen provides all-day protection from a single morning application.
Children Under 6 Months — Consult a Pediatrician
Keep out of eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. If rash or irritation develops, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional. For children under 6 months, ask a doctor before using any sunscreen.
Who is it for?
WHOPerfect for you if:
- You want an everyday face and body sunscreen that also hydrates
- You have dry, normal, or combination skin that craves moisture
- You need a fragrance-free option for sensitive skin
- You're prone to acne and need a non-comedogenic SPF
- You want antioxidant defense beyond basic UV blocking
- Your sunscreen needs to work under makeup without pilling
- You want a dermatologist-recommended, clinically tested formula
- You prefer to use your HSA or FSA benefits for sun protection

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESHyaluronic Acid, Aloe Vera, and Butylene Glycol deliver clinical 8-hour hydration. The lotion texture is moisturizing enough to skip a separate moisturizer on most dry-skin days.
An ideal match — lightweight enough for comfort, hydrating enough to maintain the barrier. The dry-touch finish feels fresh and balanced throughout the day.
The lotion's fluid consistency hydrates dry zones without overwhelming the T-zone. Some users report a slight sheen on the T-zone after several hours — blotting papers can help.
Non-comedogenic and oil-free — safe for acne-prone users. The finish leans natural-to-dewy rather than fully matte. Those with very oily skin may prefer a mattifying SPF formula or use a primer on top.
Fragrance-free, dye-free, hypoallergenic, and paraben-free — excellent for most sensitive skin. However, chemical UV filters can occasionally irritate highly reactive or eczema-prone skin; patch test first.
Non-comedogenic, oil-free, fungal-acne safe, and fragrance-free — a strong choice for breakout-prone skin. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (stable Vitamin C) also provides mild anti-acne antioxidant support.

DUPES
Similar lightweight lotion formula with broad-spectrum SPF 50 chemical protection and a dry-touch finish. Lacks the 5 AOX antioxidant complex and Hyaluronic Acid of the Eucerin, but delivers comparable sun protection at roughly 30% of the price per oz. Very widely available and well-reviewed. Best for those prioritizing UV protection over skincare benefits.
CeraVe's hydrating approach (ceramides + niacinamide) targets barrier repair rather than Eucerin's antioxidant-forward strategy. Both are fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and dermatologist-recommended. CeraVe excels for those with compromised skin barriers or eczema; Eucerin wins for antioxidant defense and sheer feel. Chemical and mineral blend (SPF 50+).
Contains oat extract for soothing and moisturizing — a good alternative for those with eczema-prone or irritated skin. Uses chemical filters (avobenzone-based) for SPF 50 coverage. Not oxybenzone-free in all sizes. Lacks the 5 AOX antioxidant complex but offers comparable lightweight hydration at a lower price point.

Storage & shelf life
12 MONTHS12 months after opening. Look for the open jar symbol with "12M" printed on the packaging. Discard if you notice a change in color, texture, separation, or smell — these indicate the UV filters may have degraded and the product can no longer guarantee labeled SPF performance.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Do not store above 77°F (25°C) for prolonged periods. Exposure to high temperatures can degrade the UV filter system and reduce efficacy. Keep cap tightly closed between uses.
Squeeze tube (5 fl oz / 150 ml). The opaque tube protects the formula from light degradation. A flip-top cap allows controlled dispensing. The tube format minimizes air exposure compared to jar packaging, helping preserve the antioxidants (Vitamin C and Vitamin E) within the formula.
The 5 fl oz (150 ml) tube exceeds the 100 ml TSA carry-on liquid limit — pack in checked luggage for flights. However, the 1.7 fl oz face version of the Advanced Hydration line is TSA-compliant and ideal for travel. Purchase travel sizes for air travel compliance.
Frequently asked questions
FAQThis product is not considered fully pregnancy-safe under current dermatological guidelines. It contains chemical UV filters — specifically Homosalate (9%), which has shown weak estrogenic activity in laboratory (in-vitro) studies, and Octocrylene (9%). While the real-world risk at typical sunscreen application levels is not clearly established, most OB-GYNs and dermatologists err on the side of caution and recommend mineral-only sunscreens (containing only zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as UV filters) during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The product does NOT contain oxybenzone or octinoxate — the most commonly avoided filters during pregnancy — but the presence of Homosalate places it in the "use with caution" category. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized guidance during pregnancy.
Yes — this formula is considered fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) safe. Malassezia yeast feeds on fatty acids with 11–24 carbon chains, polysorbates, fermented ingredients, and certain esters. This product's main emollients — C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate (a benzoate ester, not a fatty acid ester) and Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate (a diester of C7 heptanoic acid, below the problematic chain length) — do not fall into the categories that feed Malassezia. The formula is also free of polysorbates, ferments, and traditional plant oils. Suitable for those managing fungal acne or pityrosporum folliculitis. If you have an active fungal acne flare, perform a patch test first as a precaution.
Yes — this sunscreen is compatible with all common skincare actives in your AM routine. It actually contains Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (a stable Vitamin C derivative) in the formula itself, so it pairs naturally with other Vitamin C products. For your morning routine: apply retinol, Vitamin C serums, or leave-on AHA/BHA treatments first (after cleansing and toning), allow them to absorb, then apply this sunscreen as the final step. Note: retinol should ideally be used in your PM routine only, as UV exposure degrades retinol and increases photosensitivity. This sunscreen is essential if you're using chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA) or retinoids, as these ingredients increase UV sensitivity significantly.
This sunscreen performs best on dry, normal, and combination skin types. Its Hyaluronic Acid and humectant complex provides genuine 8-hour moisture that dry skin truly benefits from — often eliminating the need for a separate moisturizer. Normal and combination skin users appreciate the lightweight, non-greasy feel and clean finish. Acne-prone skin also does very well with it given its non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, oil-free formulation. Oily skin users can use it, but may notice a slight dewy or shiny finish after a few hours — a mattifying SPF or a light blotting powder can help. Very reactive or photosensitive skin types should patch test first due to the chemical UV filters, and may prefer a mineral alternative.
Sun protection works immediately — from the moment it's applied (after the required 15-minute absorption window), it's deflecting UV radiation. Hydration benefits are also felt right away, with the Hyaluronic Acid delivering a supple, plump feel within minutes of application. Longer-term skin improvements come with consistent daily use: within 2–4 weeks, users typically notice improved skin texture and a more even tone, partly due to the antioxidant complex reducing oxidative stress. The most meaningful benefit of daily SPF 50 use — prevention of UV-induced photoaging, dark spots, and reduced skin cancer risk — is cumulative and most apparent when comparing skin quality over months and years of consistent use versus non-use.
Sunscreen is always the last step in your AM (morning) skincare routine, applied after all other skincare products. The recommended order is: 1. Cleanser → 2. Toner or essence → 3. Serums or treatment actives (Vitamin C, niacinamide, etc.) → 4. Moisturizer (optional — can often be skipped with this hydrating sunscreen) → 5. This Sunscreen (last skincare step) → 6. Makeup (if desired). Apply 15 minutes before going outdoors. This product is a morning-only product; it should not replace a dedicated night moisturizer or treatment in your PM routine.
No — this product is officially labeled and tested as non-comedogenic, meaning it has been formulated and verified to not clog pores under standard dermatological testing protocols. Its comedogenic rating is estimated at 1/5 based on its ingredient profile. The formula is oil-free and uses emollients (C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate and Neopentyl Glycol Diheptanoate) with very low comedogenic ratings. It is a suitable daily sunscreen for those with acne-prone, blemish-prone, or congestion-prone skin. That said, individual skin chemistry varies — if you experience breakouts, try patch testing on a small area before full facial use.
This product has a 12-month Period After Opening (PAO), meaning it should be used within 12 months of first opening. Look for the open-jar symbol on the packaging labeled "12M." After this period, the UV filter system may degrade and no longer provide the guaranteed SPF 50 protection, even if the product looks and smells normal. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat — heat and UV exposure accelerate filter degradation. For daily facial use, a 5 oz tube used at the recommended application amount (approximately ¼ teaspoon for face and neck) will last approximately 3–4 months.
Verdict: The Eucerin Advanced Hydration Lightweight Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 is one of the most well-rounded everyday sunscreens available in the US drugstore and pharmacy segment. Its combination of clinically demonstrated 8-hour hydration via Hyaluronic Acid, genuine broad-spectrum UV protection from a four-filter chemical system, and a meaningful five-antioxidant complex (5 AOX Shield) goes significantly beyond what most SPF lotions in its price range offer. The formula is fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, oil-free, and hypoallergenic — ticking nearly every box for sensitive, acne-prone, and dry skin types. The key limitations are its caution status for pregnancy (chemical filters), the slightly dewy finish that may not suit very oily skin, and the 5 oz size that falls short for whole-body daily coverage. For anyone seeking a dermatologist-grade, hydrating daily sunscreen with built-in antioxidant defense at a reasonable price, this is an outstanding choice backed by over 100 years of Eucerin's pharmaceutical skincare heritage.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
