SENSORYPhyto-Retinol Blend™
Proprietary blend of trans-retinol + encapsulated retinol paired with bakuchiol and rambutan delivers clinically proven anti-aging results without the irritation typically associated with retinol.
Multi-Acid Exfoliation
Glycolic, lactic, mandelic, and salicylic acids work together to gently resurface skin, clear congestion, and accelerate cell turnover for a smoother, clearer complexion.
Barrier-Boosting Hydrators
Squalane, sodium hyaluronate, phospholipids, and saccharide isomerate prevent transepidermal water loss and restore the moisture barrier while actives work to renew skin.
Antioxidant Defense
Ferulic acid, ubiquinone (CoQ10), quercetin, soy isoflavones, and mulberry bark extract neutralize free radicals and protect skin from environmental damage and UV-induced photoaging.
Suitable for AM & PM Use
Uniquely formulated with antioxidants and botanicals that counteract retinol sensitivity to UV exposure, making it one of the rare retinol serums approved for safe daytime use.
Dermatologist Developed
Created by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross MD, with over 25 years of clinical practice. Clinically tested across all 6 Fitzpatrick skin types for safety and efficacy.
Safety & compatibility
SAFENOT recommended. Contains retinol (vitamin A derivative), salicylic acid, and glycolic acid — all of which are contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult your OB/GYN before use.
NOT fungal acne safe. Contains Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (a ferment), Polysorbate 20, Soy Isoflavones, and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride — all potential Malassezia triggers. Those with fungal acne should avoid this product.
Certified vegan and cruelty-free. No animal-derived ingredients or animal testing at any stage of production. Leaping Bunny standards observed.
Formulated without gluten-containing ingredients. Safe for those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity concerns in topical products.
Contains AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic) and retinol which increase photosensitivity. Always apply SPF 30+ in the morning when using this serum, even though it is marketed for AM/PM use.
This serum already contains multiple actives (retinol + 4 acids + bakuchiol). Avoid layering additional high-potency AHA/BHA exfoliants or other retinoids in the same routine to prevent over-exfoliation.
Designed to be gentle enough for first-time retinol users. Ferulic acid and bakuchiol are included specifically to buffer retinol irritation. Tested on sensitive skin types with zero reported irritation in clinical studies.
Very low clogging potential. Squalane (0), sodium hyaluronate (0), and glycerin (0) are all non-comedogenic. Linoleic acid (1) and caprylic/capric triglyceride (1) carry minimal risk. Generally safe for acne-prone skin.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSRetinol (Trans-Retinol + Encapsulated) ~0.1–0.3% est.Proven
The gold-standard vitamin A derivative that stimulates cell turnover, boosts collagen production, reduces blemish-causing sebum, fades dark spots, and smooths fine lines and wrinkles. This formula uses two forms — trans-retinol for surface-level action and encapsulated retinol for deeper, time-released delivery — maximizing efficacy while minimizing irritation risk.
- Mechanism: Binds to retinoic acid receptors in the dermis to stimulate collagen synthesis and accelerate epidermal cell turnover.
- Clinical backing: Decades of peer-reviewed studies confirm retinol significantly reduces photoaging markers within 8–12 weeks of consistent use.
- Brand claim: 100% saw smoother skin after just 1 week of use in consumer study (n=40, Fitzpatrick I–VI).
Bakuchiol ~0.5% est.Proven
A natural retinol alternative derived from the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia). Clinically proven to demonstrate equivalent efficacy to retinol for fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and elasticity without causing redness, dryness, or photosensitivity. In this formula, bakuchiol serves dual purpose: it amplifies retinol results and soothes any potential irritation.
- Study: A 2018 randomized double-blind trial in BJD showed bakuchiol comparable to 0.5% retinol for anti-aging with significantly fewer side effects.
- Function: Upregulates collagen and elastin synthesis; acts as a free radical scavenger; reinforces the skin moisture barrier.
- Bonus: Pregnancy-safe alternative to retinol when used as a standalone ingredient.
Nephelium Lappaceum Leaf Extract (Rambutan) ~0.1% est.Promising
A powerful tropical antioxidant from the rambutan fruit leaf, proprietary to Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare's Phyto-Retinol Blend™. Rich in ellagic acid and geraniin, rambutan protects existing collagen from free radical degradation, visibly improves skin elasticity, and enhances radiance. It is described as an antioxidant booster that works synergistically with retinol to amplify anti-aging results.
- Antioxidant capacity: Rambutan extract contains geraniin, one of the most potent natural antioxidants known, protecting skin against UV-induced oxidative damage.
- Function: Helps preserve natural collagen levels from environmental aggressors and visibly improves skin elasticity and radiance.
Ferulic Acid ~0.5% est.Proven
A plant-derived hydroxycinnamic acid antioxidant that serves a dual function in this formula: it stabilizes and potentiates retinol activity while neutralizing UV-induced free radicals. Ferulic acid is renowned in cosmetic chemistry for dramatically extending the efficacy and shelf life of other antioxidants (particularly vitamins C and E) and has standalone anti-photoaging and brightening effects.
- Synergy: Ferulic acid in combination with retinol counteracts retinol-induced irritation and enhances overall anti-aging performance.
- UV protection: Studies show it reduces sun damage and UV-induced erythema when applied topically.
Squalane ~1–2% est.Proven
A stable, plant-derived (sugarcane or olive) analog of the skin's natural squalene. Excellent emollient that prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL), strengthens the moisture barrier, and delivers a non-greasy, silky texture. Comedogenic rating: 0. Safe for oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin types.
- Function: Mimics skin's natural lipids to lock in hydration without clogging pores.
- Stability: Unlike squalene, squalane resists oxidation, making it an ideal ingredient for long shelf-life formulations.
Multi-Acid Complex (Glycolic + Lactic + Mandelic + Salicylic) Low % eachProven
This serum contains four exfoliating acids at gentle, synergistic concentrations. Glycolic acid (smallest AHA) resurfaces and brightens; lactic acid (larger AHA) exfoliates more gently and moisturizes; mandelic acid (largest AHA) is gentler still with antibacterial properties; salicylic acid (BHA) penetrates pores to clear congestion and reduce blemishes. Together they provide comprehensive resurfacing without the harshness of a single high-concentration acid.
- Glycolic Acid: Stimulates collagen production; helps hyperpigmentation; boosts radiance.
- Lactic Acid: Gentle hydrating exfoliant; improves texture and NMF (natural moisturizing factor).
- Mandelic Acid: Antimicrobial properties; particularly effective for acne-prone and darker skin tones with less irritation risk.
- Salicylic Acid: Oil-soluble BHA that dissolves within pores; anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.
Sodium Hyaluronate + Saccharide Isomerate ~1% est.Proven
Sodium hyaluronate (the salt form of hyaluronic acid) draws moisture from the environment into the skin, providing instant and lasting hydration. Saccharide Isomerate is a plant-derived carbohydrate complex that mimics the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and binds to keratin for up to 72 hours of hydration. Together they provide multi-layered, long-lasting moisture.
- Sodium Hyaluronate: Small molecular weight penetrates deeper than standard HA for plumping effect.
- Saccharide Isomerate: Clinical studies demonstrate superior water retention compared to glycerin alone.
Ubiquinone (CoQ10) + Hexylresorcinol + Quercetin traceProven
A trio of powerful antioxidants and brightening agents. Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10) neutralizes mitochondrial oxidative stress and supports cellular energy production; hexylresorcinol is a potent tyrosinase inhibitor that fades dark spots and evens skin tone; quercetin is a bioflavonoid antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and anti-glycation properties that protect collagen integrity.
- Hexylresorcinol: Studies show 4x more potent than kojic acid as a tyrosinase inhibitor for skin brightening.
- CoQ10: Levels in skin decline with age; topical supplementation has been shown to reduce expression lines.
Adenosine + Panthenol + Soy Isoflavones trace–0.5% est.Proven
Adenosine is a purine nucleoside that improves skin elasticity, reduces wrinkle depth, and has FDA-recognized anti-aging activity. Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) is a humectant and skin-barrier repair agent that reduces inflammation and enhances wound healing. Soy isoflavones have estrogen-like effects on skin that support collagen and elastin synthesis while providing antioxidant protection.
- Adenosine: Recognized by the FDA as an effective anti-wrinkle ingredient when used consistently.
- Panthenol: Converts to pantothenic acid in skin, essential for lipid synthesis and barrier repair.
Morus Alba Bark Extract (Mulberry) + Salix Alba Bark Extract (Willow) tracePromising
Mulberry bark extract is a natural skin brightener containing arbutin-like compounds that inhibit melanin production, helping fade dark spots and uneven tone. Willow bark extract contains natural salicylates that provide additional exfoliation, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial benefits, complementing the salicylic acid in the formula.
- Morus Alba: Contains oxyresveratrol, a potent tyrosinase inhibitor with well-documented brightening efficacy.
- Salix Alba: Natural source of salicin, which converts to salicylic acid on skin.

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply to clean, dry skin before moisturizer. If using Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta® peel pads, apply this serum immediately after. Morning use: always follow with SPF 30+. Do not layer additional exfoliating acids over this serum.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse Thoroughly
Begin with a gentle, non-exfoliating cleanser. Ensure skin is completely clean and free of makeup, SPF residue, and impurities. Pat dry — the serum absorbs best on slightly dry (not damp) skin.
Dispense 8–10 Drops
Use the precision dropper to dispense 8–10 drops into your palm or directly onto skin. A full dropper equals approximately one application. This is designed to be a generous dose — resist the urge to use less.
Massage Into Face, Neck & Décolletage
Using upward, circular motions, massage the serum gently into the face. Don't neglect the neck and décolletage — these areas show aging too. Allow serum to absorb fully (approximately 60 seconds) before the next step.
Apply Moisturizer
Follow immediately with your preferred moisturizer to seal in the serum's actives, lock in hydration, and further support the skin barrier. First-time retinol users may benefit from a richer moisturizer to buffer any initial sensitivity.
Apply SPF 30+ Every Morning
Because this serum contains retinol and multiple AHAs that increase photosensitivity, applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single morning is non-negotiable. This step protects your investment and prevents new UV damage.
New to Retinol? Start Slowly
If you have never used retinol before, begin with 2–3 times per week for the first 2–4 weeks to allow your skin to acclimate, then gradually increase to daily use as tolerated. Even experienced retinol users may want to ease in over 1–2 weeks.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESRetinol and salicylic acid directly target excess sebum production. The lightweight, fast-absorbing formula adds zero greasiness. Clinical studies showed 100% of subjects saw less oily skin.
Squalane, sodium hyaluronate, saccharide isomerate, and phospholipids provide meaningful hydration. However, very dry skin types may need to follow with a richer cream and start with less frequent use.
The lightweight serum texture and oil-balancing actives work beautifully on combination skin, addressing oiliness in the T-zone while hydrating drier areas without adding excess weight.
Bakuchiol and ferulic acid specifically buffer retinol irritation, making this gentler than most retinol serums. Fragrance-free. However, the multi-acid complex may cause mild tingling for very reactive skin — patch test recommended.
Retinol reduces blemish-causing sebum; salicylic acid clears pores; mandelic acid provides antimicrobial action. Multiple reviews highlight dramatic improvement in acne and post-acne marks. Note: not suitable for fungal acne.
The combination of retinol, bakuchiol, adenosine, CoQ10, and multiple exfoliating acids makes this a comprehensive anti-aging serum. Clinically proven to visibly improve fine lines and skin texture in just 1 week.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESHigh-strength 1% retinol with peptides and antioxidants. Very well-researched formula with decades of user trust. Does NOT include AHA/BHA exfoliants or bakuchiol, so less comprehensive but more targeted for pure retinol efficacy. Fragrance-free. PM use only.
Contains 1% retinol plus granactive retinoid and squalane. Remarkably affordable entry into retinol with good tolerability. Lacks the acid complex, bakuchiol, and comprehensive antioxidant system. No AM use recommendation. Excellent starter option.
Drugstore classic with proven retinol + hyaluronic acid formula. Effective for fine lines and wrinkles. Lacks the multi-acid complex, bakuchiol, ferulic acid, and antioxidant depth of the Dr. Dennis Gross serum. Good value entry-level option.

Dark amber glass bottle with precision dropper applicator. The dropper allows for accurate dosing of 8–10 drops per application. Recyclable packaging. Dropper keeps product hygienic between uses.
Yes — 30 ml / 1 oz is under the TSA carry-on liquid limit of 100 ml (3.4 oz). Pack upright in a zip-top bag to prevent dropper leakage. Consider the orientation when packing to protect the dropper mechanism.
Frequently asked questions
FAQNo — this serum is NOT recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It contains retinol (a vitamin A derivative), salicylic acid (a BHA), and glycolic acid, all of which are contraindicated during pregnancy. High doses of vitamin A (including topical retinoids) have been associated with birth defects, and salicylic acid is generally advised against during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Always consult your OB/GYN or healthcare provider before using any active skincare during pregnancy. Safe pregnant alternatives for texture and glow include formulas with azelaic acid, vitamin C, or niacinamide.
No — this serum is NOT considered safe for fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis). It contains several ingredients that can feed Malassezia yeast: Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (a fermented ingredient), Polysorbate 20 (an emulsifier derived from fatty acids), Soy Isoflavones, and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (a fatty acid ester). If you have confirmed fungal acne, look for a serum that is free of ferments, fatty acids, esters, and polysorbates. Consider alternatives formulated specifically to be Malassezia-safe.
This serum already contains retinol, multiple AHAs (glycolic, lactic, mandelic), and a BHA (salicylic acid), so you should avoid stacking additional retinol or exfoliating acid products on top. Layering more retinol (or prescription retinoids) risks retinol overload and significant irritation. Adding more AHAs or BHAs risks over-exfoliation and barrier damage. Regarding vitamin C: you can use a vitamin C serum in a different step or at a different time of day, but avoid directly layering vitamin C with this serum as pH conflicts and potential irritation may result. If you're using Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta peel pads, apply them first as directed, then follow with this serum.
This serum is formulated for oily, normal, combination, dry, and sensitive skin — essentially all skin types except those with active fungal acne. It is particularly well-suited for oily and acne-prone skin due to its retinol, salicylic acid, and multi-acid exfoliant system. Clinical testing was performed on all Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI, making it inclusive for all skin tones. People with very dry or compromised skin barrier should start slowly and use a rich moisturizer afterwards. People with sensitive or reactive skin should patch test and start with 2–3 times per week before daily use.
Results vary by skin concern. Many users notice improved radiance and smoother texture after just the first use. According to the brand's clinical study, 100% of subjects saw smoother and less oily skin within 1 week with no irritation. Significant improvement in blemishes and skin clarity is typically visible within 3–4 weeks. For deeper changes — fine line reduction, collagen improvement, and substantial hyperpigmentation fading — allow 6–12 weeks of consistent daily use. Long-term users report continued progressive improvement beyond 3 months. Consistency is key with retinol: the longer you use it, the more pronounced the anti-aging results become.
Apply this serum as your active treatment step on clean, dry skin — after cleansing and any toner, but before moisturizer. If you use Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta peel pads, apply those first and follow immediately with this serum. The application order is: Cleanser → Toner (optional) → Peel Pads (optional) → This Serum → Eye Cream → Moisturizer → SPF 30+ (AM only). It can be used morning and night. Always apply SPF 30 or higher every morning when using this serum, as it contains photosensitizing actives (retinol + AHAs). Do not apply vitamin C serums directly on top of this serum — use vitamin C in a separate step or separate routine if desired.
No — this serum has a very low comedogenic rating of approximately 1/5. The key emollient ingredients (squalane, sodium hyaluronate, glycerin) all have comedogenic ratings of 0–1, meaning they are essentially non-pore-clogging. The formula is designed to be lightweight and non-greasy, and the combination of retinol, salicylic acid, and AHAs actually works to keep pores clear rather than clog them. Retinol normalizes cell turnover to prevent pore congestion. Multiple users with acne-prone skin report that this serum improved their skin rather than causing breakouts. Note: some initial "purging" (temporary breakouts) can occur in the first 2–4 weeks as retinol accelerates cell turnover and pushes existing congestion to the surface — this is normal and distinct from true comedogenicity.
The period after opening (PAO) is 12 months. Look for the open jar symbol on the packaging indicating "12M." Using 8–10 drops per application twice daily means a 30 ml bottle will typically last approximately 4–6 weeks with consistent twice-daily use, or 6–10 weeks with once-daily use. Retinol degrades over time when exposed to air, light, and heat — always replace the cap firmly after each use, store away from light and heat, and discard after 12 months of opening regardless of remaining product to ensure efficacy and safety of the formula.
Verdict: The Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Advanced Retinol + Ferulic Texture Renewal Serum is one of the most thoughtfully engineered retinol serums available at its price point. Its signature Phyto-Retinol Blend™ — combining dual-form retinol, bakuchiol, ferulic acid, and rambutan — delivers clinically substantiated results with impressive gentleness for a formula this active. The addition of four exfoliating acids (glycolic, lactic, mandelic, salicylic), a robust antioxidant complex (CoQ10, quercetin, hexylresorcinol, soy isoflavones), and superior hydrators (squalane, sodium hyaluronate, phospholipids) makes this a genuinely comprehensive multi-tasking serum rather than a simple retinol product. The AM/PM versatility is a standout feature rarely found in retinol formulas. Key limitations: not suitable for pregnancy, breastfeeding, or fungal acne, and the ~$76 price for 30 ml will not suit every budget. For anyone seeking a dermatologist-quality, all-in-one retinol treatment that is gentle enough for beginners yet potent enough for experienced retinol users, this serum earns its reputation as a clinic-in-a-bottle.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
