Patented Mexoryl XL Technology

Invisible Finish, Zero White Cast

The silica-and-perlite base absorbs excess oil and creates a perfectly invisible, non-greasy finish on all skin tones, making it ideal under makeup or worn alone.

Glycerine + Vitamin E Hydration

Beyond UV protection, this formula delivers active skin hydration via glycerine and antioxidant support via tocopherol (Vitamin E) to neutralise UV-generated free radicals.

Water-Resistant Formula

Engineered with film-forming polymers (C12-22 Alkyl Acrylate Copolymer) to maintain SPF protection during perspiration and brief water exposure — excellent for daily active use.

Reef-Safe & Oxybenzone-Free

Unlike many chemical sunscreens, this formula is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate — the two UV filters most commonly linked to coral reef toxicity.

Dermatologically Tested

Developed by La Roche-Posay's dermatological labs and clinically tested even on sensitive and reactive skin types. Suitable for daily long-term use.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding — Caution

This product contains chemical UV filters including Homosalate (shown in vitro to have potential estrogenic activity) and Octocrylene. While no clinical harm in humans has been confirmed, most dermatologists recommend switching to a 100% mineral (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) sunscreen during pregnancy as a precaution. Always consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) — Not Recommended

Contains Isopropyl Myristate — a fatty acid ester that is a well-established trigger for Malassezia (pityrosporum) folliculitis. If you are prone to fungal acne, this product is not ideal. Consider a mineral-only SPF such as the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 instead.

Acne-Prone Skin — Generally Safe

Formulated without pore-clogging silicones, oils, or heavy occlusives. The matte-finish perlite and silica absorb sebum. Many acne-prone users report no increased breakouts. Rated low on the comedogenicity scale (2/5).

Sensitive Skin — Safe

Fragrance-free, paraben-free, and free of known common allergens per SkinSAFE analysis. Dermatologist-tested with clinical tolerance testing on reactive skin. Suitable for daily use.

Retinol / Vitamin C Compatible

Can be layered safely with retinol (applied at night), niacinamide, Vitamin C serums, and AHA/BHA acids. Apply sunscreen last in AM routine, after all serums and moisturiser.

Reef-Safe — Yes

Free from oxybenzone and octinoxate, the two UV filters banned in Hawaii and linked to coral reef bleaching. Safe for ocean swimming environments.

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Drometrizole Trisiloxane (Mexoryl XL) 7%Proven

La Roche-Posay's patented crown jewel UV filter. A silicone-based organic UV absorber that covers both UVB (280–320 nm) and long-wave UVA (340–400 nm) with outstanding photostability — meaning it does not degrade in sunlight the way older filters like avobenzone do on their own.

  • UV range: Broad-spectrum UVA + UVB, peak at ~303 nm (UVB) and ~360 nm (UVA)
  • Photostability: Highly stable — resistant to UV degradation over prolonged exposure
  • Max allowed concentration: 15% in the EU; used here at 7% in a multi-filter stack
  • Exclusive to: La Roche-Posay; not FDA-approved (not available in US-formulated sunscreens)
One of the most advanced UV filters globally, offering the photostability that older generation filters lack.

Bemotrizinol (Tinosorb S / Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine) 5%Proven

One of the most effective broad-spectrum UV absorbers available in Europe. Oil-soluble and highly photostable, Tinosorb S covers the entire UV spectrum (280–400 nm) and is particularly valued for stabilising other less-stable UV filters such as avobenzone. It also helps boost overall SPF values significantly.

  • UV range: Full UVB + UVA spectrum (280–400 nm), peaks at 310 nm and 345 nm
  • Photostability: Excellent — one of the most stable UV filters known
  • SPF boost: Highest SPF-boosting capacity of any single EU-approved filter at max concentration
  • Reef safety: Oil-soluble, removed by oil-based cleansers; not oxybenzone-derived
Not FDA-approved due to regulatory lag — not a safety issue. Widely used across Europe, Australia, and Asia.

Avobenzone 3%Proven

The gold-standard long-wave UVA filter approved in both the US and EU. Avobenzone effectively absorbs UVA rays (320–400 nm), protecting against the skin-aging, hyperpigmentation-inducing rays that reach deep into the dermis. While avobenzone is photo-unstable on its own, the Mexoryl XL and Tinosorb S in this formula act as photostabilisers.

  • UV range: UVA specialist — peak absorption at 357 nm (deep UVA I)
  • Photostability issue: Degrades in UV light, but Mexoryl XL and Tinosorb S stabilise it in this formula
  • Max allowed: 3% in the US; same concentration used here

Octocrylene 5%Proven

A UV-B and partial UVA-II filter widely used for its photostability and ability to stabilise avobenzone. Also functions as an emollient, contributing to the product's smooth, fluid feel and improving water resistance.

  • UV range: UVB peak at 304 nm; mild UVA-II coverage
  • Photostability: Good — loses ~10% SPF in 95 min exposure
  • Note: Possible contact sensitisation in individuals using topical ketoprofen (NSAID); consult a dermatologist if applicable
Those using topical ketoprofen (anti-inflammatory) may experience cross-sensitisation. Speak with a pharmacist or dermatologist.

Glycerine est. 1–3%Proven

A skin-identical humectant that draws moisture from the environment into the skin's outer layers. Glycerine is well-established as one of the most effective, best-tolerated moisturising agents in cosmetics, with a comedogenicity rating of 0.

  • Function: Humectant — draws and retains water in the stratum corneum
  • Efficacy: Effective from 3%; studies show improved skin barrier function at higher concentrations
  • Comedogenicity: 0/5 — will not clog pores

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) est. <1%Proven

Pure Vitamin E — a lipid-soluble antioxidant that neutralises UV-generated free radicals, helping to prevent oxidative damage to skin cells. Works synergistically with Vitamin C (if applied in an AM serum beneath this sunscreen) and helps stabilise the sunscreen formula itself.

  • Function: Antioxidant, free-radical scavenger, skin-conditioning agent
  • Synergy: Works 4x more effectively when paired with Vitamin C
  • Formula benefit: Provides mild photoprotective support beyond SPF filtering

Silica + Perlite est. 1–2%Proven

Two mineral-derived oil-absorbing powders that give this formula its signature matte-to-satin finish. Silica (spherical beads) both absorbs sebum and scatters light for a soft-focus skin-blurring effect. Perlite (volcanic glass) provides additional oil-absorbing capacity, keeping skin shine-free throughout the day.

  • Oil absorption: High — silica can absorb up to 150% its own weight in sebum
  • Blurring effect: Spherical silica beads scatter light to minimise the appearance of pores and texture
  • Benefit: Makes this sunscreen suitable for oily and combination skin types
This duo is why Anthelios Ultra Fluid is frequently recommended as a makeup base — it creates a smooth, non-shiny canvas.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Apply After Moisturiser

Once all serums and moisturiser have been absorbed, dispense approximately a 5p/nickel-sized amount (about ¼ teaspoon) of product — this is the recommended amount for adequate face coverage to achieve full SPF 50+ protection.

2

Apply to the Entire Face & Neck

Smooth gently over the entire face, including around the eye area (avoiding direct eye contact), and down to the neck and décolletage. Do not rub vigorously — use light, even strokes to avoid pilling.

3

Wait 2–3 Minutes Before Makeup

Allow the formula to set on the skin for 2–3 minutes before applying any foundation, BB cream, or powder. This prevents pilling and ensures even SPF distribution is not disrupted.

4

Reapply Every 2 Hours Outdoors

No sunscreen provides all-day protection from a single morning application. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors, or immediately after swimming or excessive perspiration. Use an SPF spray or powder for convenient reapplication over makeup.

06

Who is it for?

WHO

Perfect for you if:

  • You have oily or combination skin and hate greasy sunscreens
  • You want a non-white-cast chemical SPF that works under all foundations
  • You need a high-SPF daily sunscreen for city or outdoor use
  • You have sensitive skin that reacts to fragrance and common preservatives
  • You want pharmaceutical-grade, dermatologist-backed sun protection
  • You're looking for a sunscreen that doubles as a primer-like base
  • You want a global-standard UV filter stack not available in US formulas

Consider alternatives if:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding (opt for mineral SPF)
  • You are prone to fungal acne (Isopropyl Myristate is a trigger)
  • You have very dry skin needing rich, occlusive hydration in one step
  • You prefer 100% mineral-only UV filters (zinc/titanium)
  • You need alcohol-free formulas (contains Alcohol Denat.)
  • You want a water-resistant SPF for intense beach or sport activity (choose Anthelios Sport or Wet Skin instead)
07

Skin type compatibility

SKIN TYPES
Oily Skin
Excellent

The silica and perlite-powered matte finish makes this one of the best sunscreens for oily skin. Absorbs excess sebum throughout the day without blocking pores. Dries to a non-greasy, clean finish.

Combination Skin
Excellent

Ultra-lightweight fluid texture adapts well across the T-zone and drier cheeks. Controls shine on oily zones without stripping drier areas. A top pick for combination skin.

Dry Skin
Moderate

Glycerine provides some hydration, but the alcohol content and matte-drying silica may feel slightly drying for very dry skin types. Best layered over a rich moisturiser. Users with normal-dry skin report it works well with a hydrating base beneath.

Sensitive Skin
Good

Fragrance-free and free from most common allergens. Dermatologist-tested on sensitive skin. The alcohol denat. may cause mild initial sensitivity for some — patch test first if highly reactive.

Acne-Prone Skin
Good

Non-comedogenic and oil-free. Does not contain heavy occlusive ingredients. However, Isopropyl Myristate may trigger Malassezia (fungal) breakouts in some individuals. For bacterial acne only, generally works well.

Mature / Anti-Aging
Excellent

The strongest single anti-aging investment is consistent, high-SPF sun protection. The Mexoryl XL + Tinosorb S combo delivers superior UVA protection (the aging ray), plus Vitamin E antioxidant support to fight photoageing.

Budget Pick

The most popular drugstore alternative from Japan. Similar ultra-lightweight watery texture, zero white cast, and a dewy (not matte) finish. Uses Uvinul A Plus and Tinosorb S for broad-spectrum coverage — advanced filters like Anthelios. Lacks the EU PPD rating transparency and is not as widely tested on sensitive skin. An outstanding value.

Budget Pick

A drugstore classic with a similarly non-greasy, dry-touch finish. Provides good broad-spectrum coverage but uses an older filter stack (Avobenzone + Helioplex) without the photostability benefits of Mexoryl XL or Tinosorb S. Larger bottle size and much lower cost per ml. Suitable for budget-conscious users with normal to oily skin.

55% Match
AM Facial Moisturising Lotion SPF 15
~$18
Similar

A 2-in-1 lightweight moisturiser-sunscreen with niacinamide and ceramides for barrier support — ideal if you want to consolidate moisturiser and SPF steps. However, SPF 30 offers meaningfully less protection than SPF 50+, and the UV filter stack is less advanced. Great for normal to dry skin; less ideal for oily or combination types seeking a matte finish.

Storage & shelf life

12 MONTHS
Period After Opening (PAO)

12 months after opening. The 12M symbol is printed on the base of the tube. Discard the product after this period as UV filter efficacy may degrade.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Do not leave in a hot car or direct sun for prolonged periods — heat can degrade chemical UV filters faster.

Packaging

50ml soft squeeze tube with a precision nozzle tip. Hygienic and easy to control dispensing. The tube format helps prevent oxidation and contamination compared to open-jar packaging.

Travel Friendly

Yes — the 50ml tube is within EU and international airline liquid carry-on limits (under 100ml). Fits easily into a clear liquids bag. Ideal for travel and daily on-the-go use.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

This product is rated asCaution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It contains chemical UV filters including Homosalate, which has shown potential estrogenic activity in laboratory (in vitro) studies, and Octocrylene. While no proven harm to humans has been established at cosmetic use levels, mainstream guidance from dermatologists and OB-GYNs suggests switching to a 100% mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) during pregnancy as a precautionary measure. We recommend consulting your healthcare provider. Safer alternatives include the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50 or the ISDIN Eryfotona Actinica SPF 50+.

No — this product is not considered fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) safe. It containsIsopropyl Myristate, a fatty acid ester that is a well-documented trigger for Malassezia yeast overgrowth. If you are prone to fungal acne breakouts (small, itchy, uniform pimples typically across the forehead, cheeks, or chest), this product may worsen your condition. Consider a fungal-acne-safe alternative such as the La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral SPF 50, EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46, or a mineral Japanese SPF (e.g. Shiseido Anessa).

Yes — this sunscreen is fully compatible with retinol, Vitamin C, AHA, and BHA. Apply active serums first (after toner), follow with moisturiser if needed, then apply the Anthelios Ultra Fluid as the final step before makeup. Retinol should only be applied in your evening routine; using this SPF in the morning after a retinol evening routine is not only safe but essential, as retinol increases UV sensitivity. Vitamin C and SPF are particularly complementary — the antioxidant action of Vitamin C enhances your UV protection beyond the SPF number.

Anthelios Ultra Fluid SPF 50+ is best suited foroily, combination, and normal-to-oily skin types. The silica and perlite base provides a genuine matte-to-satin finish that controls shine throughout the day. It is suitable for sensitive skin types thanks to its fragrance-free, paraben-free formulation. Dry skin types may find it slightly drying due to the Alcohol Denat. content — they should apply a hydrating moisturiser before this sunscreen or consider the hydrating La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Hydra SPF 50 instead.

UV protection is immediate from the first application — your skin is protected from sunburn and UV-induced damage from day one. Cosmetically, the matte finish and pore-blurring effect of silica are also immediately visible. Over4–8 weeks of consistent daily use, most users notice a reduction in new sun spot formation and improved skin evenness. After3–6 months of daily SPF use, scientific studies demonstrate measurable improvements in fine lines, skin texture, and collagen preservation compared to unprotected skin. Sunscreen is the most evidence-backed anti-aging skincare product available.

Always apply as thefinal step of your morning skincare routine, after cleansing, toning, serums, and moisturiser — but before any makeup. The correct AM order is: Cleanser → Toner/Essence → Vitamin C or active serum → Eye cream → Moisturiser →Anthelios Ultra Fluid SPF 50+ → Makeup (optional). Allow 2–3 minutes after applying the sunscreen before applying foundation to prevent pilling. Do not apply sunscreen before serum or moisturiser, as this disrupts the UV filter film. Never use this (or any sunscreen) as a nightly moisturiser.

This product has acomedogenic rating of 2/5, which is considered low to low-moderate. The formula as a whole is marketed as non-comedogenic and has been tested to confirm it does not block pores under standard testing. The main ingredient of concern isIsopropyl Myristate (rated 3–5/5 on the comedogenicity scale in isolation), which is present in the formula as an emollient. Most users with bacterial-acne-prone skin do not report breakouts from this sunscreen. However, those prone to fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) should avoid it. Sensitivity to individual ingredients varies — if breakouts occur, discontinue use and try a mineral alternative.

The product has aPeriod After Opening (PAO) of 12 months, indicated by the 12M symbol on the tube. After this period, the UV filters may have degraded below their labelled concentrations, reducing effective sun protection. The sealed product has a typical shelf life of 2.5–3 years from manufacture. Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight to maximise stability. A 50ml tube used daily at the correct dose (~¼ teaspoon per application, face and neck) will last approximately 4–6 weeks.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.7 / 5 ★★★★★

Verdict: The La Roche-Posay Anthelios Ultra Fluid SPF 50+ earns its status as one of the world's most recommended daily face sunscreens. Its combination of the patented Mexoryl XL and next-generation Tinosorb S UV filters delivers genuinely superior broad-spectrum coverage — particularly in the critical long-wave UVA range responsible for skin ageing and hyperpigmentation. The ultra-fluid texture, invisible finish, and matte-oil-control properties make it a stand-out daily SPF for oily, combination, and sensitive skin types who've historically struggled to find a sunscreen they enjoy wearing. The caveats are real: it is not suitable for fungal-acne-prone skin (Isopropyl Myristate), it is not the best choice for very dry skin (Alcohol Denat.), and pregnant users should opt for mineral SPF. But for the vast majority of daily SPF users? This is a world-class formulation backed by decades of dermatological research that genuinely does what it promises — and you'll actually want to wear it every day.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
