Contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreens. Colorescience confirms there are no ingredients contraindicated for pregnant or nursing women. Always consult your physician before starting any new treatment.
Contains Lactobacillus Ferment (a ferment), Sorbeth-230 Tetraoleate (ester), Sorbitan Laurate (ester with fatty acid component), and Methyl Glucose Caprate/Caprylate/Oleate (fatty acid esters) which can feed malassezia yeast. Not recommended for those with active fungal acne.
This cleanser has been tested and confirmed non-comedogenic by Colorescience. As a rinse-off product, the risk of pore-clogging is minimal even for acne-prone skin types.
Uses Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, and Decyl Glucoside — all mild, biodegradable surfactants. No harsh sulfates (SLS/SLES) included.
Preserved with Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, and Potassium Sorbate — standard, well-tolerated cosmetic preservatives. Paraben-free.
Can be used around the eye area to remove eye makeup. Avoid getting cleanser directly into the eyes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
Lactobacillus FermentPatented
A first-of-its-kind, patented probiotic-like ferment derived from Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria. Creates balance by favoring beneficial bacteria and discouraging harmful bacteria, supporting a healthy skin microbiome. Rich in peptidoglycans (PGNs) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) which induce beta-defensins.
- Research: Estée Lauder studies (2012) demonstrated anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties at concentrations as low as 1%.
- Benefit: Compared to salicylic acid, lactobacillus ferment worked faster at reducing size and redness of acne lesions (Barnet).
- Function: Also serves as a natural preservative booster in the formula.
Opuntia Ficus-Indica (Prickly Pear Cactus) Stem ExtractProven
An antioxidant-rich botanical extract high in flavonoids, polysaccharides, vitamins, and minerals. Supports the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF), smooths the skin, and strengthens the barrier while soothing sensitive or irritated skin.
- Antioxidants: Rich in flavonoids that neutralize free radicals and protect against environmental damage.
- Hydration: Polysaccharides help retain moisture and support the skin's NMF for long-lasting hydration.
- Soothing: Helps calm sensitive and reactive skin while reinforcing barrier integrity.
Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Fruit ExtractProven
Also known as pink pomelo extract, this ingredient is high in vitamin C and potassium. Promotes blood flow to the skin while providing gentle exfoliating, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. Encourages gentle sloughing off of dead skin cells for a renewed complexion.
- Exfoliation: Naturally encourages cell turnover without harsh physical or chemical exfoliants.
- Vitamin C: Provides antioxidant protection and supports brightening.
- Antibacterial: Helps purify the skin surface during cleansing.
GlycerinProven
A powerful skin-identical humectant that draws moisture into the skin and helps maintain the skin lipid barrier in a healthy state. Effective at concentrations as low as 3%, glycerin provides long-lasting hydration and protects against irritation.
- Comedogenicity: 0 — does not clog pores.
- Research: Proven to maintain healthy skin lipids in their liquid crystal state, protecting barrier function.
- Synergy: Works with the mild surfactant system to ensure the skin remains hydrated after cleansing.
Sodium Lauroyl SarcosinateProven
A mild, amino acid-derived surfactant that provides excellent cleansing power without stripping the skin. Known for its biodegradability and gentle foam-boosting abilities. Performs similarly to isethionates, which are among the gentlest cleaning agents available.
- Mildness: Significantly gentler than SLS/SLES sulfates while providing effective cleansing.
- Compatibility: Works synergistically with co-surfactants to dissolve mineral sunscreen and makeup.

How to Use
Morning Cleanse (without makeup/sunscreen)
Wet face. Dispense 1 pump into wet hands. Apply to wet face and massage for at least 1 minute, spending approximately 15 seconds each on forehead, cheeks and nose, chin, and eye area.
Evening Cleanse (with makeup/sunscreen)
Wet hands but leave face dry. Dispense 2–3 pumps into wet hands. Apply to dry face and massage into skin to break down makeup, sunscreen, and impurities. Add a small amount of water to increase emulsification.
Lather & Rinse
Add water to face and hands — the cleanser will begin to bubble and lather. Continue cleansing for at least 1 minute total. Avoid getting cleanser into the eyes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Follow Up
Pat skin dry gently. Follow with your toner, serum, and moisturizer. Apply sunscreen in the morning. For best results, pair with Colorescience Barrier Pro Essential Moisturizer.

Product Overview
Quick product notes are a great way to check if a product is free from commonly avoided ingredients by skincare enthusiasts. These preferences come about for different reasons depending on the ingredient such as personal experiences, sensitivities, health preferences & etc.
Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you

A product that contains good or bad ingredients for your skin type doesn't always flat out make the entire product good or bad for your skin. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine your skins reaction.
One of the best ways to use this section is to troubleshoot products you've had bad experiences with in the past. Check if it contains any of the marked ingredients to point out suspect ingredients to avoid in the future!

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
