๐ŸŒŠ

Free of oxybenzone and octinoxate, the two filters most commonly restricted under reef-protection laws (Hawaii, Key West).

๐Ÿงช
Active Compatibility

Safe to layer over morning actives like vitamin C, niacinamide, or peptides. Use AHA/BHA/retinoids only at night and apply SPF over them in the AM.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Ingredient Breakdown

โ˜€๏ธ Homosalate 10% Proven

The highest-concentration UV filter in the formula. A liquid oil-soluble UVB absorber (peak 306 nm) that also dissolves harder UV filters like avobenzone. Approved up to 10% in the EU and 15% in the US.

  • Function: Primary UVB absorber and solvent for avobenzone.
  • Photostability: Loses about 10% of SPF within 45 minutes alone, which is why it's combined with octocrylene.
  • Regulation: EU max 10% (this product meets the cap exactly).
โš ๏ธ
In-vitro studies have suggested possible weak estrogenic activity, prompting some users to limit long-term full-body use. Face-only daily application is generally considered low-risk by dermatologists.

๐ŸŒ… Ethylhexyl Salicylate (Octisalate) 5% Proven

A gentle, well-tolerated UVB filter (peak 307-310 nm) that adds water resistance and helps stabilize avobenzone. One of the safest chemical filters with an excellent allergen profile.

  • Function: UVB protection (295-315 nm) and emollient.
  • Bonus: Adds slight water resistance to the formula.
  • Regulation: Max 5% US/EU โ€” used at the cap.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) 3% Proven

The global gold standard for UVA protection โ€” and one of the only FDA-approved filters covering the full UVA range (310-400 nm) with peak protection at 360 nm. Critical for preventing photoaging and pigmentation.

  • Function: Broad UVA filter (UVA1 + UVA2).
  • Stabilization: Photo-unstable on its own, but stabilized here by octocrylene and ethylhexyl methoxycrylene (Solastay S1).
  • FDA Status: Approved at up to 3% (used at the cap).

โš™๏ธ Octocrylene 3% Proven

A photostable UVB and UVA II filter (peak 304 nm) used primarily to stabilize avobenzone and improve water resistance. Loses only 10% of SPF in 95 minutes โ€” much more stable than homosalate alone.

  • Function: Avobenzone stabilizer + UVB booster.
  • Photostability: One of the most stable chemical filters available.
  • Use level: 3% โ€” moderate, well below the 10% EU cap.
โš ๏ธ
Rare cases of photo-contact allergy have been reported, especially in adults sensitive to ketoprofen. Patch test if you have a history of sunscreen reactions.

๐Ÿซ Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract Promising

The hero botanical and brand signature. A natural antioxidant rich in betalains that helps neutralize free radicals generated by UV and pollution. Also acts as a humectant to support skin's natural moisturizing factors.

  • Antioxidant: Betalain pigments scavenge UV-induced reactive oxygen species.
  • Hydration: Manufacturer data suggests it boosts NMF concentration in the upper skin layers.
  • Anti-inflammatory: May help reduce post-UV redness.
โœจ
Acts as a "force multiplier" alongside the UV filters โ€” UV protection plus antioxidant defense gives more comprehensive photoaging prevention than SPF alone.

๐Ÿ’ง Hyaluronic Acid Proven

A humectant that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Keeps skin plump and hydrated through the day, preventing the tight, dehydrated feeling that some chemical sunscreens leave behind.

  • Hydration: Binds moisture in the upper skin layers.
  • Plumping: Smooths the look of fine dehydration lines.
  • Synergy: Works well alongside propanediol, the formula's secondary humectant.

๐ŸŒฟ Bisabolol Proven

A natural compound derived from chamomile (and some other plants). One of the most respected calming ingredients in skincare โ€” anti-inflammatory, soothing, and well-tolerated even by sensitive skin.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce post-sun redness and irritation.
  • Penetration enhancer: May improve absorption of other actives.
  • Sensitive skin: Considered low-allergen and non-irritating.

๐ŸŒŸ Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) Proven

Stable, esterified form of vitamin E. Reinforces the skin barrier, smooths skin texture, and provides additional antioxidant protection that complements the beetroot extract.

  • Antioxidant: Quenches lipid peroxidation in the skin barrier.
  • Barrier support: Helps repair and reinforce the lipid matrix.
  • Sunscreen synergy: Works alongside avobenzone to extend antioxidant defense.

Makeup

๐ŸŒ… Morning only. Always the LAST skincare step before makeup. Wait 1-2 minutes after moisturizer to prevent pilling. Reapply every 2 hours of sun exposure.

๐Ÿ“ How to Use

1

Shake the tube

Give the tube a gentle shake before each use to redistribute the formula evenly.

2

Measure two finger lengths

Squeeze enough product to cover two full finger lengths โ€” the dermatologist-recommended amount for face and neck. Underapplying reduces SPF protection significantly.

3

Pat and press, don't rub

Dot evenly across face, then gently pat into skin. Rubbing too aggressively can cause pilling, especially over silicone-based moisturizers.

4

Wait before makeup

Allow 1-2 minutes for the sunscreen to set before applying foundation, primer, or any makeup.

5

Reapply every 2 hours

For continued sun exposure, reapply every 2 hours, after swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. Use an SPF stick or powder for reapplication over makeup.

๐Ÿ‘ค Who Is It For?

โœ… Perfect for you if:

  • You have dry, dehydrated, or normal skin
  • You're sensitive to fragrance and essential oils

โŒ Consider alternatives if:

  • You're pregnant and prefer mineral filters only
  • You have very oily skin and need a matte finish
  • You want SPF 50+ for high-altitude or beach use
  • You have known allergies to octocrylene or homosalate
  • You need a fully water-resistant sport sunscreen
  • You're looking for a budget option under $15

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Beet The Sun contains chemical UV filters โ€” homosalate (10%), octisalate (5%), avobenzone (3%), and octocrylene (3%). All four are FDA-approved at the concentrations used here. However, in-vitro studies have raised questions about possible weak hormonal activity from homosalate. Many OB/GYNs and dermatologists recommend that pregnant or breastfeeding individuals switch to mineral (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) sunscreens for extra peace of mind, especially for full-body or long-term use. For face-only daily wear, the risk is considered low. Always consult your doctor for personalized advice.

No โ€” Beet The Sun is not fungal acne safe. The formula contains polysorbate 80 and tocopheryl acetate, both of which can feed Malassezia yeast and trigger pityrosporum folliculitis (fungal acne) in those who are prone. If you have confirmed fungal acne, look for a sunscreen free from esters, polysorbates, and fatty acids โ€” mineral options like Purito Daily Soft Touch or pure zinc-based formulas tend to be safer choices.

Yes โ€” and you absolutely should. Sunscreen is essential when using any of these actives because they all increase photosensitivity (especially retinol and AHAs). Apply your actives at night (retinol, AHA, BHA) or in your morning serum step (vitamin C), wait for them to absorb, layer your moisturizer, then finish with Beet The Sun as your last step. Daily SPF protects the gains you make with actives by preventing UV-driven pigmentation and damage.

Beet The Sun performs best on dry, dehydrated, normal, combination, and sensitive skin thanks to its hyaluronic acid, propanediol, bisabolol, and beetroot extract. It's also a strong choice for medium-to-deep skin tones since it leaves zero white cast. Oily skin types may find the natural finish slightly dewy and prefer to set it with a translucent powder. Acne-prone skin generally tolerates it well (non-comedogenic, 1/5 rating), with the exception of those with confirmed fungal acne.

UV protection works instantly โ€” apply 15-20 minutes before sun exposure to give the chemical filters time to bind to the skin. Hydration and reduced post-sun redness are typically noticeable within the first day. Long-term benefits like prevention of photoaging, dark spots, and fine lines develop over months and years of consistent daily use. Studies show daily SPF use can visibly slow signs of aging within 4-6 months and significantly reduce hyperpigmentation over 12 months.

Beet The Sun is the LAST skincare step in your morning routine. The order is: cleanser โ†’ toner/essence โ†’ serum โ†’ moisturizer โ†’ Beet The Sun โ†’ makeup. Wait 1-2 minutes after applying moisturizer before layering on the sunscreen to prevent pilling. If you're using makeup, allow another 1-2 minutes for the sunscreen to set. Do not apply at night โ€” sunscreen has no benefit in the absence of UV exposure.

Beet The Sun is non-comedogenic, with a community-derived comedogenic rating of approximately 1 out of 5. It's free from heavy oils, butters, and the most common pore-clogging ingredients. Most acne-prone users tolerate it without breakouts. The exception, as noted above, is fungal acne โ€” the formula's polysorbate 80 and tocopheryl acetate can trigger Malassezia-driven breakouts in those who are prone to that specific condition.

Beet The Sun has a Period After Opening (PAO) of 12 months. As an FDA-regulated OTC sunscreen, the tube is also stamped with a hard expiration date โ€” use whichever date comes first. Store in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight, since heat exposure can degrade the chemical UV filters and reduce SPF effectiveness over time. If the texture, color, or smell changes, discontinue use.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†
4.4 out of 5

Verdict: Krave Beauty's Beet The Sun is one of the most thoughtfully reformulated K-beauty sunscreens of the post-2021 era โ€” an honest, transparent, FDA-verified SPF 40 PA+++ that delivers everything chemical-sunscreen lovers want: zero white cast, hydrating texture, fragrance-free formula, and PETA-vegan packaging. The standout combination of beetroot antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and bisabolol makes it a particularly good match for dry, sensitive, and combination skin types, as well as anyone with medium-to-deep skin tones who has struggled to find a truly invisible SPF. The trade-offs are real but minor: the 50 mL tube empties quickly, fungal acne sufferers should look elsewhere, and very oily skin may prefer a matte finish. At $20, it sits at the upper-mid range of K-beauty SPF โ€” pricier than Beauty of Joseon, cheaper than Supergoop. For daily city wear by the right skin type, it's an easy recommendation.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
