Birch Juice at 10,000ppm

Sourced from silver birch trees in Inje, South Korea, this NMF-rich sap delivers 17 amino acids, minerals, and antioxidants directly into the skin during cleansing.

Low pH Formula (5.0–6.0)

Matches the skin's natural acid mantle to prevent over-stripping, reduce transepidermal water loss, and maintain the microbiome balance after every wash.

Aquaporin-Boosting Hydration

Glyceryl Glucoside stimulates aquaporin-3 (AQP3) channels in skin cells, enhancing water transport and keeping skin plump long after rinsing.

Soothing Botanical Blend

Artemisia Annua (Sweet Wormwood) extract paired with Anthemis Nobilis (Chamomile) Flower Oil calms redness, soothes post-breakout irritation, and reduces inflammation.

Gentle Coconut-Derived Surfactants

SLS-free formula uses Sodium Cocoyl Alaninate, Lauryl Hydroxysultaine, and Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate — all amino acid or isethionate-based for non-irritating, skin-friendly foam.

Clinically Verified Safety

Rated "EXCELLENT" by Dermatest Germany. Clinically proven to cleanse fine dust, sunscreen residue, and pore impurities while measurably increasing skin hydration levels.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe

No retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical UV filters. All surfactants and botanicals are considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding at cosmetic concentrations.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) Safe

Contains no polysorbates, ferments, or fatty acid esters that feed malassezia. Glyceryl Caprylate is actually antimicrobial and may inhibit fungal growth. Safe for fungal acne-prone skin.

Fragrance-Free & Dye-Free

Contains no added synthetic fragrances or colorants. The faint natural scent (mild chamomile/citrus note) comes from chamomile flower oil and citric acid, not added perfumes.

Non-Comedogenic (Rating: 1/5)

Chamomile flower oil and pine needle oil both rate 0–1 on the comedogenic scale. No heavy occlusive oils or pore-clogging ingredients. Suitable for acne-prone skin types.

Vegan & Cruelty-Free Formula

All ingredients are plant-derived or synthetically produced. No animal-derived components. Round Lab is a Korean brand focused on natural, clean ingredient sourcing.

Nut & Coconut Sensitivity Note

Multiple surfactants are coconut-derived (Sodium Cocoyl Alaninate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate). If you have a known coconut or tree nut allergy, patch test before full use.

Compatible with Actives

Low-pH formula supports subsequent application of AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, niacinamide, and retinoids. Use as the first or second cleanse step before applying active serums.

Parabens, Sulfate & Alcohol Free

No SLS, SLES, parabens, or drying alcohols. 1,2-Hexanediol and Hexylene Glycol are glycol-based preservatives — not drying alcohols — and are well tolerated by sensitive skin.

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Betula Platyphylla Japonica Juice (Birch Juice) 10,000ppm / ~1%Star Ingredient

Silver birch sap harvested in spring from Inje County, South Korea. Naturally rich in Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF) — a complex of amino acids, lactic acid, pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), and sugars that mirrors the skin's own moisture system.

  • Hydration: Contains 17 free amino acids that act as humectants, binding water within the stratum corneum.
  • Antioxidant: Natural vitamins C and B (niacinamide) protect against free radical damage and brighten uneven tone.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Birch polyphenols reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine activity, calming redness and stressed skin.
  • Barrier support: Minerals and trace elements reinforce the skin's lipid barrier and support collagen production.
Sourced exclusively from Inje County's pristine birch forests. Concentration of 10,000ppm (1%) is clearly stated and represents a meaningful active dose in a rinse-off formula.

Glycerin Position 2 — High %Proven

A foundational humectant that forms the hydrating backbone of this cleanser. Glycerin is naturally present in skin as part of NMF and is widely regarded as one of the most effective moisturizing agents in skincare science.

  • Mechanism: Attracts water from the environment and deeper skin layers to the stratum corneum, maintaining surface hydration even post-rinse.
  • Barrier function: Keeps intercellular lipids flexible, strengthening the skin barrier against environmental stressors.
  • Penetration: Small molecular weight allows it to carry other humectants and actives into deeper epidermal layers.

Sodium Hyaluronate + Hyaluronic Acid Dual-weight HAProven

This cleanser features both forms of hyaluronic acid. Sodium Hyaluronate (lower MW) penetrates deeper into the epidermis, while free Hyaluronic Acid provides surface-level plumping and moisture retention.

  • Water binding: HA holds up to 1,000× its own weight in water, delivering immediate and sustained hydration.
  • Rinse-off benefit: Even in a wash-off formula, HA leaves behind a conditioning film that reduces post-cleanse tightness.
  • Anti-aging: Regular use supports plumpness and reduces the appearance of fine lines caused by dehydration.

Artemisia Annua Extract (Sweet Wormwood) Active botanicalProven

A powerful anti-inflammatory botanical widely used in K-beauty for its ability to soothe redness, calm breakouts, and support skin recovery. Clinically studied for eczema and dry skin relief.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Artemisinin and flavonoid compounds inhibit NF-κB pathway, reducing inflammatory skin responses.
  • Anti-bacterial: Exhibits antimicrobial properties against acne-causing bacteria without disrupting the skin microbiome.
  • Dermatologically recommended: Used in clinical settings for itch, eczema, and post-treatment skin calming protocols.

Glyceryl Glucoside Aquaporin activatorPromising

An innovative hydration ingredient originally isolated from extremophile organisms that survive extreme dryness. It triggers the skin's own aquaporin-3 (AQP3) water channels, improving internal moisture transport.

  • Aquaporin activation: Studies show Glyceryl Glucoside upregulates AQP3 expression, improving long-term moisture retention from within.
  • Barrier repair: Supports lamellar body secretion and helps rebuild the lipid matrix of the stratum corneum.
  • Clinical data: A 2019 study demonstrated statistically significant improvements in skin hydration and barrier function after 4 weeks of use.
Its presence in a cleanser — even at rinse-off stage — leaves a residual conditioning effect that contributes to the "soft skin" feeling users report post-wash.

Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) Antioxidant doseProven

Pure L-ascorbic acid provides antioxidant protection and mild brightening during the cleanse. At low concentrations in a rinse-off formula, it primarily works as an antioxidant and free radical scavenger rather than a treatment-level active.

  • Antioxidant: Neutralizes free radicals caused by UV, pollution, and environmental stressors before they degrade collagen.
  • Collagen support: Essential cofactor for collagen synthesis, contributing to skin firmness over time.
  • Brightening: Inhibits tyrosinase activity, helping to even skin tone with consistent use.
At rinse-off concentrations, the brightening effect is mild compared to leave-on vitamin C serums. For targeted hyperpigmentation treatment, pair with a dedicated vitamin C serum after cleansing.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Wet Your Face & Hands

Splash your face with lukewarm water. Dispense a pea-to-nickel-sized amount (about 1–2 pumps or small squeeze) onto damp palms.

2

Lather into a Rich Foam

Rub your palms together with a little water to activate the gel into a creamy, airy foam. The gel transforms into lather quickly — no foaming net needed.

3

Massage Gently onto Face

Apply foam to face using gentle circular motions, working outward from the center. Spend 30–60 seconds massaging — include the hairline, nose creases, and jawline. Avoid the eye area.

4

Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse off completely with lukewarm water. Finish with a brief cool rinse to help close pores and lock in the dewy feel. Pat — do not rub — dry with a clean towel.

5

Continue Your Routine Immediately

Apply your toner, essence, or serum while skin is still slightly damp to maximize absorption. Follow with moisturizer to seal in the hydration delivered during cleansing.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes — this cleanser is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreen actives, or other ingredients flagged as unsafe during pregnancy. All surfactants are coconut-derived, and the botanical extracts (birch juice, artemisia, chamomile) are used at cosmetic concentrations in a rinse-off formula. As with any skincare product during pregnancy, consult your healthcare provider if you have specific sensitivities or medical concerns.

Yes — this cleanser is considered fungal acne safe. It contains no polysorbates, fermented ingredients, or long-chain fatty acids that are known to feed malassezia. Notably, it contains Glyceryl Caprylate, which is an antimicrobial ester shown to inhibit fungal and bacterial growth. As a rinse-off product, even borderline ingredients pose minimal risk. This cleanser is widely used by the fungal acne community without reported issues.

Absolutely — this cleanser is an excellent pairing for all actives. Its low pH (5.0–6.0) prepares the skin for AHAs and BHAs by maintaining an acidic environment that allows these acids to function optimally. It does not disrupt the skin barrier before retinol application and its hydrating properties can help reduce the dryness or irritation sometimes associated with retinoid use. Apply actives after cleansing, once skin is slightly damp, for best absorption.

This cleanser is best suited for dry, combination, sensitive, dehydrated, and acne-prone skin types. It excels for anyone who experiences post-wash tightness, dryness, or irritation from most cleansers. It also works well for oily skin, though very oily skin types may prefer pairing it with an oil-control toner. The formula is genuinely suitable for all skin types thanks to its balanced pH, gentle surfactant blend, and hydrating actives.

Most users notice an immediate difference after the first use — skin feels soft and non-tight after rinsing. Over 1–2 weeks of twice-daily use, post-cleanse dryness and redness typically diminish significantly. By weeks 3–4, skin texture improves and overall hydration levels throughout the day increase. For the full benefits of aquaporin activation and skin barrier strengthening, allow 4–8 weeks of consistent use. Cleansers work cumulatively — consistency is key.

Use this as Step 1 of your skincare routine, both morning and evening. In the evening, if you wear sunscreen, foundation, or heavy makeup, use an oil-based cleanser first (double cleansing), then follow with this as your second, water-based cleanse. In the morning, this cleanser alone is sufficient. After cleansing, continue with toner, essence, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen (AM only).

No — this cleanser has a comedogenic rating of 1/5, which is considered very low. It contains no heavy oils or waxes. Chamomile Flower Oil (Anthemis Nobilis) and Pine Needle Oil (Pinus Sylvestris) both have comedogenic ratings of 0–1. As a rinse-off formula, even ingredients with slightly higher ratings pose minimal risk since they do not remain on the skin long enough to occlude pores. This cleanser has been used extensively by acne-prone users without reported pore-clogging issues.

The recommended Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months. With twice-daily use, a 150ml tube typically lasts 3–4 months for most users, well within the PAO window. The 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, and Disodium EDTA in the formula act as preservatives to maintain stability and prevent microbial contamination throughout the product's lifespan. Store at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Discard if texture, color, or scent changes notably.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.7 / 5 ★★★★★

Verdict: The Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturising Cleanser is one of the most compelling hydrating cleansers in K-beauty today. Its combination of a clinically measured low pH, genuine aquaporin-activating technology (Glyceryl Glucoside), dual-weight hyaluronic acid, and a clean, fragrance-free surfactant system delivers a cleanse that leaves skin measurably better-hydrated — not just "less stripped." The Dermatest "Excellent" certification, fungal acne safety, and pregnancy-safe status make it a genuine all-rounder. Best suited to dry, sensitive, combination, and barrier-compromised skin types, it earns its cult status as a daily-use cleanser that works harder than most people expect from a step they rinse down the drain.

Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
