Calendula Extract — Soothing Star

Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract delivers flavonoids with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, calming redness and sensitivity while cleansing.

Self-Emulsifying Formula

Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate and Sorbitan Sesquioleate act as emulsifiers, turning the oil milky white on contact with water for easy, complete rinsing.

Minimalist 8-Ingredient Formula

iUNIK's philosophy of simplicity means no unnecessary fillers, artificial dyes, or preservatives — just effective, purposeful botanicals.

Double-Cleanse First Step

Formulated as the oil-cleansing step in the K-beauty double-cleansing method — dissolves sebum, SPF, and makeup before a follow-up foam cleanser.

Barrier-Supportive Oils

Sunflower Seed Oil (high in linoleic acid) and Jojoba Seed Oil (mimics sebum) help maintain the skin's natural lipid barrier during cleansing.

Cruelty-Free & Vegan Certified

iUNIK is a certified cruelty-free brand. No animal-derived ingredients, no animal testing at any production stage.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding — Caution

Contains Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil, an essential oil generally advised to be used cautiously during pregnancy. No retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical UV filters present. Consult your healthcare provider before use.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) — NOT Safe

Contains Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate and Sorbitan Sesquioleate (polysorbate-type esters), and Sunflower Seed Oil (contains oleic acid). These ingredients can feed Malassezia yeast. As a rinse-off product, risk is reduced, but those with active fungal acne should consider alternatives.

Alcohol-Free

No denatured alcohol (ethanol) or drying alcohols in the formula. Safe for those with alcohol sensitivities.

Paraben-Free & Preservative-Light

Free from parabens and common preservatives. The anhydrous (water-free) oil formula is naturally resistant to microbial contamination.

Mineral Oil & Silicone Free

Contains only plant-derived oils — no petrolatum, mineral oil, or silicones that can create a heavy occlusive film.

Sensitive Skin — Patch Test Advised

Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil is a known sensitizer with high skin sensitization potential. Those with highly reactive or eczema-prone skin should patch test first. Calendula may also cause reactions in those allergic to the Asteraceae/Compositae family (ragweed, chrysanthemums).

Comedogenic Rating: 2/5 (Low Risk)

While Canola Oil has an inherent comedogenic rating of 4, this is a rinse-off cleanser — ingredients don't remain on skin long enough to clog pores. Jojoba (0-2) and Sunflower (1-2) oils are low-comedogenic. Suitable for most acne-prone skin types.

Compatible with Retinol & Actives

As the first step in a PM routine, this cleanser is fully compatible with subsequent retinol, vitamin C, AHA/BHA, and niacinamide applications. It does not contain actives that could react with other products.

03

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil #1 — ~40%+Proven

The base carrier oil of this formula. Rich in linoleic acid (omega-6), sunflower seed oil helps maintain and restore the skin's lipid barrier, reduces transepidermal water loss, and provides a lightweight emollient texture without heaviness.

  • Key fatty acids: Linoleic acid (~65%), oleic acid (~20%), palmitic acid (~6%)
  • Vitamin E content: High in tocopherols — antioxidant protection against free radicals
  • Skin barrier: Studies show linoleic acid-rich oils improve barrier function in dry and eczema-prone skin
  • Comedogenic rating: 1-2/5 — low risk
Sunflower oil may not be considered fully fungal acne (malassezia) safe due to its oleic acid content. As a rinse-off product, risk is minimised.

Canola Oil #2 — ~30%Proven

Rapeseed oil with reduced erucic acid content. A lightweight emollient that provides slip and glide during massage, helps the formula spread easily across the face while delivering vitamins E and K to the skin.

  • Key fatty acids: Oleic acid (~62%), linoleic acid (~20%), alpha-linolenic acid (~9%)
  • Vitamins: Contains Vitamin E (tocopherol) and Vitamin K
  • Emollient function: Softens and conditions the skin during the cleansing massage step
Canola oil has a comedogenic rating of 4/5 on dry skin, but as a rinse-off cleanser this concern is significantly reduced in practice.

Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract #3 — ~10–15%Proven

The hero botanical of this product. Derived from the common Marigold plant, this extract contains flavonoids, terpenoids, and polysaccharides with clinically studied anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing properties.

  • Anti-inflammatory: Inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines; soothes redness and irritation
  • Antioxidant: Flavonoid compounds neutralise free radicals
  • Traditional use: Used for centuries in European folk medicine for skin healing and wound care
  • Antibacterial: Shows mild antibacterial activity that may help keep pores clear
May cause reactions in those with Asteraceae/Compositae family allergies (ragweed, daisy, chrysanthemum). Patch test if you have known plant allergies.

Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate #4 — EmulsifierFunctional

A self-emulsifying surfactant that enables this oil cleanser to mix with water during rinsing. This is the ingredient that creates the characteristic milky emulsion when you add water, allowing complete and effortless rinsing without residue.

  • Function: Water-in-oil emulsifier / solubiliser for rinsability
  • Skin feel: Produces a smooth, non-greasy rinse-off feel
  • Safety: Considered safe for cosmetic use; low irritation potential in formulated products
As a polysorbate-type ester, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate is not considered fungal acne (malassezia) safe.

Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil #5 — ~5–8%Proven

Technically a liquid wax ester rather than a true oil, Jojoba closely mimics the composition of human sebum, making it exceptionally compatible with skin. Non-comedogenic, long shelf-life, and deeply conditioning.

  • Sebum-mimicking: Wax ester structure matches skin's natural lipids — excellent barrier support
  • Shelf-stable: Highly resistant to oxidation, extending formula longevity
  • Comedogenic rating: 0-2/5 — suitable for acne-prone skin
  • Antibacterial: Contains naturally occurring iodine with mild antibacterial properties
Jojoba is one of the safest and most universally tolerated oils in skincare. Excellent for sensitive and acne-prone skin types.

Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil #6 — ~3–5%Proven

A highly emollient oil uniquely rich in palmitoleic acid — a fatty acid that is naturally present in young skin but declines with age. Gives the formula a luxurious, skin-nourishing quality and helps the formula glide smoothly during massage.

  • Palmitoleic acid: 12–25% content — supports mature skin barrier and cell regeneration
  • Oleic acid: 50–67% — deeply emollient, creates the velvety texture
  • Comedogenic rating: 2/5 — low to moderate

Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil #7 — TraceFragrant

An essential oil from the yellow flowers of the Cananga tree native to tropical Asia. Provides the product's faint floral scent. Also attributed with sebum-regulating and mood-relaxing properties, though it is present at low concentrations.

  • Scent profile: Sweet, exotic, floral — contributes the product's signature mild aroma
  • Sebum regulation: Traditionally used to balance oily skin
Cananga Odorata Flower Oil has high skin sensitisation potential and is one of the most common essential oil allergens. Use with caution if you have reactive skin. Also advise caution during pregnancy.

Sorbitan Sesquioleate #8 — Co-EmulsifierFunctional

A secondary emulsifier that works alongside Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate to ensure the formula emulsifies smoothly and completely when water is added. Helps stabilise the oil blend and contributes to the milky rinse-off texture.

  • Function: Oil-in-water emulsifier, helps achieve clean rinsability
  • Safety: Non-irritating at use concentrations; considered safe for topical application

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Start with Dry Hands & Dry Face

This is critical — oil and water don't mix, so applying to wet skin will begin emulsification too early before the oil has a chance to dissolve makeup and SPF properly.

2

Pump 2–3 Doses into Palms

Dispense 2–3 pumps (approx. 2–3ml) into the palm of your hand. Rub hands together briefly to warm the oil slightly, which helps it glide more easily.

3

Massage for at Least 60 Seconds

Apply to dry face and massage in slow circular motions. Cover the full face including the eye area, lips, and hairline. The oil dissolves sebum, waterproof makeup, and sunscreen through the "like dissolves like" principle. For blackheads, massage the T-zone for longer.

4

Emulsify with Water

Add a small amount of lukewarm water and continue massaging — the formula will turn milky white as the emulsifiers activate. This step ensures the oil carries away impurities without leaving a greasy residue.

5

Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse completely with lukewarm water. Follow immediately with your water-based cleanser (foam or gel) as the second step of double cleansing to remove any remaining residue and cleanse at the water-soluble level.

06

Who is it for?

WHO

Perfect for you if:

  • You wear daily sunscreen (SPF) and need thorough removal
  • You wear light to full-face makeup, including waterproof products
  • You follow a K-beauty double-cleansing routine
  • You have dry, combination, normal, or sensitive skin
  • You prefer minimalist, short-ingredient formulas
  • You want a cleansing oil that doesn't leave skin feeling stripped or greasy
  • You prefer cruelty-free and vegan-certified products
  • You're on a budget but want quality Korean skincare

Consider alternatives if:

  • You have active fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) — not FA-safe
  • You're pregnant and prefer to avoid all essential oils
  • You have a confirmed allergy to Asteraceae plants (marigold, ragweed, chamomile)
  • You have a ylang ylang or fragrance allergy
  • You prefer a completely fragrance-free cleansing oil
  • You have very oily skin and need a lighter-weight, thinner consistency
  • You require a one-step cleanser (this works best with a double-cleanse)
07

Skin type compatibility

SKIN TYPES
Dry Skin
Excellent

The rich blend of nourishing plant oils provides conditioning benefits during cleansing. Skin is left soft and hydrated, not tight or stripped — ideal for dry skin that needs gentle but thorough cleansing.

Combination Skin
Excellent

Self-emulsifying formula cleanses effectively across oily T-zones while not over-stripping drier cheek areas. The lightweight oil texture doesn't feel heavy post-rinse.

Oily Skin
Good

Effectively dissolves excess sebum and unclogs pores. May feel slightly richer than very lightweight alternatives. Follow with a gel-type second cleanser for a squeaky-clean finish.

Sensitive Skin
Good

Calendula extract soothes and calms. However, ylang ylang essential oil is a known sensitiser — patch test is strongly recommended for very reactive skin before full use.

Acne-Prone Skin
Good

Low comedogenic risk as a rinse-off product. Not suitable for active fungal acne. Effective at dissolving pore congestion and blackheads. Best used as step 1 followed by a BHA cleanser for acne-prone types.

Mature Skin
Excellent

Macadamia oil's palmitoleic acid content makes this particularly beneficial for mature skin. Cleansing without stripping preserves the skin's natural moisture — essential as skin produces less sebum with age.

12 months after opening. As an anhydrous (water-free) oil formula, it is naturally resistant to microbial growth, which extends shelf life vs. water-based products.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. Avoid storing in hot bathrooms or near heat sources, as heat can accelerate oil oxidation.

Packaging

200ml plastic pump bottle. The pump dispenser ensures hygienic, controlled dispensing and limits air exposure, which helps maintain oil freshness. Minimalist, clean aesthetic.

Travel Friendly

At 200ml, this exceeds the 100ml liquid limit for carry-on luggage. Suitable for checked baggage travel. Consider a small travel decant bottle for short trips.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Use with caution during pregnancy. The formula contains Cananga Odorata (Ylang Ylang) Flower Oil — an essential oil that is generally recommended to be avoided or used with caution during the first trimester, and used minimally thereafter. The product does not contain retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreen actives — which are the primary pregnancy concerns in skincare. The remaining oils (sunflower, jojoba, macadamia, canola, calendula extract) are considered safe. As a rinse-off product, systemic absorption is very low. Nevertheless, always consult your obstetrician or healthcare provider before introducing new products during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

No — this product is not considered fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) safe. It contains Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate and Sorbitan Sesquioleate, which are ester-type emulsifiers known to feed Malassezia yeast. Additionally, Sunflower Seed Oil contains oleic acid, which is also associated with malassezia growth. As a rinse-off cleanser, the exposure time is short and the risk may be lower in practice than with leave-on products. However, if you have active fungal acne, we recommend switching to a dedicated FA-safe cleansing oil such as PURITO From Green Cleansing Oil or an oil cleanser based solely on squalane or mineral oil.

Yes — this cleansing oil is fully compatible with all actives, including retinol, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), AHA (glycolic, lactic acid), and BHA (salicylic acid). As a rinse-off first cleanser used before applying any actives, it does not interact with or destabilise your subsequent routine steps. In fact, thorough cleansing with an oil cleanser is recommended before applying actives as it ensures a clean canvas for better penetration and efficacy. Apply your water-based actives only after completing both steps of double cleansing and after the skin is fully dry.

This cleansing oil works well for dry, normal, combination, and mature skin types. Dry skin benefits most from the nourishing, barrier-supportive oils that leave skin hydrated post-cleanse. Combination skin benefits from the self-emulsifying formula that cleanses oily zones without over-drying drier areas. It's also a strong choice for mature skin, thanks to macadamia oil's palmitoleic acid content. For oily skin, it works effectively but may feel slightly richer — follow with a lightweight foam cleanser. Not ideal for those with active fungal acne or ylang ylang sensitivities.

The makeup and SPF removal benefit is immediate — from your very first use. Skin-conditioning effects (softer texture, improved hydration post-cleanse) begin to be noticeable within 1–2 weeks of consistent double cleansing. Reduction in blackhead appearance and pore congestion typically takes 3–4 weeks of regular use, as the oil-cleansing action gradually dissolves accumulated sebum plugs. Long-term benefits from calendula extract's anti-inflammatory properties — such as reduced redness and more balanced skin tone — generally become apparent after 4–8 weeks of consistent use.

This is always Step 1 of your PM (evening) routine. Apply to completely dry hands and a dry face before any other product. Massage for at least 60 seconds to dissolve makeup, SPF, and sebum. Add water to emulsify, then rinse. Follow immediately with a water-based cleanser (foam or gel cleanser) as Step 2 of the double-cleanse. After both cleansing steps are complete, proceed with your toner, essence, serums, moisturiser, and any overnight treatments. This product is generally not needed in the morning routine unless you've applied heavy overnight products.

The comedogenic risk is low for a rinse-off product. The formula contains jojoba oil (comedogenic 0–2) and sunflower oil (1–2), which are low-comedogenic. Canola oil individually rates 4/5, but because this product is thoroughly rinsed off rather than left on the skin, its comedogenic impact is significantly reduced versus a leave-on moisturiser containing the same ingredient. Thousands of users with acne-prone skin use this daily without breakout concerns. The key is to always follow with a second cleanser and rinse thoroughly. If you experience breakouts, consider the FA-safe alternatives listed above.

The Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months — indicated by the open jar symbol on the packaging. Because this is an anhydrous (water-free) oil formula with no water phase, it is naturally resistant to microbial contamination and can remain effective for the full 12-month period without preservatives. At 200ml and using 2–3 pumps per use (PM only), a single bottle typically lasts 3–5 months for most users — well within the PAO window. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight or heat to prevent premature oxidation of the plant oils.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.3 / 5 ★★★★☆

Verdict: The iUNIK Calendula Complete Cleansing Oil is an outstanding value-for-money K-beauty cleansing oil that delivers on its core promise: thorough, gentle removal of makeup, sunscreen, and daily impurities without leaving skin stripped or greasy. The ultra-minimalist 8-ingredient formula — built on 94% natural plant oils with soothing Calendula extract at its heart — is a breath of fresh air in a market full of over-engineered cleansers. The self-emulsifying formula rinses completely and leaves skin feeling conditioned and balanced. The main limitations are the ylang ylang essential oil (a potential sensitiser and pregnancy concern) and its incompatibility with fungal acne — if neither applies to you, this is one of the best cleansing oils available under $20. Highly recommended for dry, combination, mature, and sensitive skin types following the double-cleanse method.

lightbulb What are Notable Effects & Ingredients?

Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
