Soap-Free Cleansing

Built on Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, a coconut-derived surfactant known for being one of the gentlest cleansing agents available — won't strip the skin barrier.

Targets Acne & Bacne

Salicylic acid (BHA) penetrates oil-clogged pores while kaolin clay absorbs excess sebum — ideal for breakouts on face, chest, back, and shoulders.

Antioxidant-Rich Oils

Grapeseed oil and rosehip seed oil deliver linoleic acid and vitamin E to nourish skin and support a healthy moisture balance during cleansing.

Affordable Multi-Use

One $5 bar replaces both face wash and body wash — lasts months when stored properly. A budget hero for full-body acne care.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Contains salicylic acid (BHA). Most dermatologists consider rinse-off salicylic acid in low concentrations safe during pregnancy, but it's best to consult your OB/GYN first.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) Safe

Free of esters, fatty acids over C11, and polysorbates that feed Malassezia yeast. Salicylic acid actually helps reduce fungal acne.

Non-Comedogenic

Comedogenic rating of 1/5. Grapeseed and rosehip oils are low on the comedogenic scale and rinse off — won't clog pores.

Pairs With Most Actives

Compatible with niacinamide, vitamin C, retinol and AHAs in your routine. As a rinse-off, BHA exposure time is short.

Vegan & Cruelty-Free

Leaping Bunny certified. No animal-derived ingredients, no animal testing — confirmed by Good Molecules.

Tea Tree Oil Sensitivity

Some formulations contain Melaleuca Alternifolia (tea tree) oil — a potential irritant for very reactive or eczema-prone skin. Patch test first.

03

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate ~30-40%Proven

The primary cleansing agent — a coconut-derived surfactant ("syndet") that produces a rich, creamy foam without disrupting the skin barrier. The cornerstone of "soapless soap" bars.

  • Source: Dr. Leslie Baumann (Cosmetic Dermatology) describes Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate as defining a new dimension in the mildness of cleansing bars.
  • Property: Readily biodegradable; based on vegetable fatty acids; pH-friendly to skin.

Salicylic Acid (BHA) ~0.5-1%Proven

Beta hydroxy acid that's oil-soluble, allowing it to dissolve sebum and exfoliate inside the pore. Active against blackheads, whiteheads, body acne and uneven texture.

  • FDA OTC: Concentrations of 0.5–2% are FDA-recognized as over-the-counter acne treatment.
  • Mechanism: Anti-inflammatory (similar structure to aspirin) plus exfoliating action that unclogs pores.
If skin barrier is already compromised, introduce gradually — start 3–4× per week and build up.

Kaolin Clay 5-10%Proven

A fine, white clay (hydrous aluminum silicate) that absorbs excess sebum and impurities. Gentler than bentonite — suitable for sensitive skin types too.

  • Irritancy / Comedogenicity: Both rated 0 — among the safest mattifying ingredients.
  • Function: Absorbs oil, brightens dull complexion, helps balance combination skin.

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Powder 2-5%Promising

Antioxidant-rich cocoa powder soothes inflammation and calms redness. Contains polyphenols and flavonoids that protect against environmental damage.

  • Brand claim: Good Molecules states cocoa powder "soothes and calms inflammation, working to improve texture and tone."

Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil 2-4%Proven

A light, polyphenol-rich emollient oil that nourishes the skin without feeling heavy. High in linoleic acid and vitamin E for barrier support.

  • Composition: 55–77% linoleic acid (barrier repair), 12–27% oleic acid, plus vitamin E.
  • Benefit: Acne-prone skin is often deficient in linoleic acid — grapeseed oil helps restore balance.

Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Seed Oil 1-3%Proven

Rosehip seed oil is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin A precursors, and antioxidants. Helps maintain elasticity and tone post-acne.

  • Brand claim: Good Molecules states rosehip and grapeseed oils nourish skin and promote elasticity.

Glycerin 3-5%Proven

A skin-identical humectant naturally found in skin. Pulls moisture into the upper layers, preventing the tightness typical of bar cleansers.

  • Irritancy / Comedogenicity: Both rated 0.
  • Effective: A 2016 study found glycerin to be a more effective humectant than AHAs and hyaluronic acid.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Wet the bar & skin

Wet your face, body, or both with lukewarm water. Wet the bar directly under running water for a few seconds.

2

Lather in hands

Rub the bar between your palms to build up a creamy lather — using your hands (not the bar directly on the face) is gentler and more hygienic.

3

Massage onto skin

Massage the lather over face and/or body in gentle circular motions for 30–60 seconds. Avoid eye area. For bacne, apply directly to back, chest, shoulders.

4

Rinse & dry the bar

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and pat dry. Place the bar on a draining soap dish — keeping it dry between uses extends shelf life dramatically.

5

Always follow with moisturizer

Apply hydrating toner, serum and moisturizer afterward. Use SPF 30+ during the day — BHAs can increase sun sensitivity.

06

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

The bar contains salicylic acid (BHA), which is generally considered safe in low concentrations as a rinse-off cleanser during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, the exact percentage isn't disclosed by Good Molecules, so we recommend consulting your OB/GYN or dermatologist before use, particularly during the first trimester. Many practitioners give a green light for under-2% rinse-off salicylic acid, but high oral or leave-on doses should be avoided. The other ingredients (kaolin, glycerin, grapeseed and rosehip oils, cocoa) are pregnancy-friendly.

Yes — this bar is considered fungal acne (Malassezia) safe. It does not contain esters, fatty acids over C11, polysorbates, or fermented ingredients that feed Malassezia yeast. Salicylic acid actually helps reduce fungal acne by exfoliating dead skin cells where the yeast thrives. Grapeseed and rosehip oils have very short fatty acid chains that are generally well-tolerated. As a rinse-off, contact time with potentially-feeding ingredients is also short.

Yes, but build up gradually. Because this bar is rinse-off, the BHA exposure is brief, making it more compatible with other actives than leave-on BHA products. Withvitamin C: use the bar AM, vitamin C after — no conflict. Withretinol: use the bar AM, retinol PM. Withleave-on AHA/BHA: skip the active on the days you cleanse with this bar to avoid over-exfoliation. Withbenzoyl peroxide: alternate days to prevent dryness.

It's best for combination, oily, and acne-prone skin (face and body). Good Molecules states it's especially beneficial for combination-to-oily skin. It also works well for body breakouts on the back, chest, and shoulders (bacne). Dry, sensitive, eczema-prone, or rosacea-prone users should patch test first or limit use to 2–3× per week with a rich moisturizer afterward.

Most users see smoother, less shiny skin after the first wash. Visible reduction in clogged pores and blackheads typically appears within 1–2 weeks. Active acne lesions and bacne usually decrease noticeably within 3–4 weeks of consistent daily use. Post-acne marks and overall texture improvements are best evaluated at 8–12 weeks. If acne hasn't improved after 6 weeks, consider consulting a dermatologist for stronger options.

It's the very first step — your cleanser. Use it AM and/or PM (we recommend daily PM for most users; AM optional if your skin tolerates it). After cleansing, follow with toner, essence, treatment serums, moisturizer, and sunscreen during the day. For body use, lather in shower, rinse, then apply body lotion afterward to lock in moisture.

No. The bar has a very low comedogenic rating of 1/5. The two oils — grapeseed (rated 1) and rosehip (rated 1) — are both low-comedogenic. Kaolin clay and glycerin are rated 0. As a rinse-off product, ingredients spend minimal time in contact with skin, further reducing pore-clogging risk. Salicylic acid actively unclogs pores rather than blocking them.

The Period After Opening (PAO) is approximately 12 months. With daily face-and-body use, one 85g/3oz bar typically lasts 4–8 weeks, depending on lather amount and how dry you keep it between uses. Always store on a draining soap dish — a constantly wet bar dissolves much faster and can develop softness. Replace if you notice off smell, color change, or sliminess.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.6 / 5 ★★★★★

Verdict: The Good Molecules Clarify & Cleanse Bar is one of the smartest budget buys in modern acne skincare. For just $5, it delivers a soap-free syndet base built around Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate (one of the gentlest cleansing surfactants), salicylic acid for pore-clearing, kaolin clay for sebum control, and antioxidant grapeseed and rosehip oils for nourishment. It's vegan, Leaping Bunny cruelty-free, fragrance-free, and works equally well on face and body — making it a standout pick for anyone dealing with bacne or acne-prone combination/oily skin. It loses half a star only because it lacks ceramides for barrier repair and the bar wears down faster than larger drugstore competitors.Best for: combination, oily, and acne-prone skin; budget shoppers; eco-conscious users; bacne sufferers.Skip if: very dry, eczema-prone, or salicylate-sensitive.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
