Texture & feel
SENSORYTargeted Spot Treatment
Delivers salicylic acid directly into clogged pores to dissolve the keratin plug, reduce pore congestion, and prevent new blemishes from forming at the source.
Botanical Boost
Arctium Lappa (Burdock) Root Extract and Epilobium Angustifolium (Willow Herb) Extract provide anti-inflammatory and sebum-regulating support alongside the active ingredient.
Hydration While Treating
Glycerin and Propylene Glycol help maintain moisture balance so skin stays hydrated even as salicylic acid exfoliates, reducing the risk of over-drying.
Retinyl Palmitate Support
A gentle, ester form of Vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate) helps promote cell turnover and may assist in fading post-acne marks and evening skin tone over time.
Silicone-Enhanced Glide
Cyclopentasiloxane and Dimethicone Crosspolymer provide a silky, smooth application that spreads evenly over blemishes without dragging or pilling on the skin.
Marine Algae Antioxidants
Cystoseira Amentacea/Caespitosa Branchycarpa Extract supplies marine-sourced antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress linked to acne inflammation.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains Salicylic Acid and Retinyl Palmitate. Low-concentration topical salicylic acid is generally considered lower risk, but Retinyl Palmitate is a Vitamin A derivative. Most OB-GYNs recommend avoiding retinoids during pregnancy. Consult your healthcare provider before use.
Not considered fungal acne safe. Contains multiple Polysorbates (Polysorbate 85, Polysorbate 20), Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Butyl Avocadate, and fatty alcohols (Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol) — ingredients that can feed Malassezia yeast. Those with fungal acne should choose a simpler formula.
Moderately low comedogenic risk. Stearyl Alcohol rates 2/5, Glyceryl Stearate rates 1/5, and Propylene Glycol rates 0/5. The silicone-based ingredients and crosspolymers are non-comedogenic. Suitable for most acne-prone skin types when used as a spot treatment, not an all-over moisturizer.
Contains multiple fragrance compounds: Methyldihydrojasmonate, Ethylene Brassylate, Ethyl Linalool, Isobutyl Methyl Tetrahydropyranol, Methylenedioxyphenyl Methylpropanal, Gamma-Undecalactone, Cyclamen Aldehyde. Those with fragrance sensitivities should patch test before full use.
Contains Methylparaben, a preservative in the paraben family. While parabens are approved for cosmetic use at low concentrations, those preferring paraben-free formulas should note this ingredient.
Salicylic acid may increase photosensitivity. Always apply SPF 30+ sunscreen during the day when using this product, especially if applying to large areas rather than spot treating.
Does not contain denatured alcohol (alcohol denat.) which can be drying and irritating for many skin types. The formula uses humectants to maintain hydration balance.
Works well as a standalone spot treatment alongside gentle cleansers and oil-free moisturizers. Avoid layering with other exfoliating acids (AHA/BHA) or strong retinoids in the same step to prevent irritation.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSSalicylic Acid ~1–2%Proven
The star active ingredient in this formula. A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow bark that is oil-soluble, allowing it to penetrate deep into pores to dissolve the sebum and dead skin cell buildup that causes blackheads and whiteheads. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce redness and swelling around active pimples.
- Mechanism: Oil-soluble exfoliant that penetrates the lipid-rich environment of clogged pores; loosens and dissolves the intercellular glue holding dead cells together.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, reducing redness and swelling associated with inflamed acne lesions.
- FDA Approved: Recognized as a safe and effective OTC acne-fighting ingredient at concentrations of 0.5–2%.
- Keratinolytic Action: Softens the keratin plugs in pores, making comedone removal easier and preventing future blockages.
Glycerin ~3–5%Proven
A powerhouse humectant that draws moisture from the air and deeper skin layers to the surface, ensuring the skin stays hydrated while the salicylic acid exfoliates. It forms a protective film that helps maintain the skin barrier, which is especially important in acne treatments that may disrupt the barrier function.
- Humectant: Attracts and binds water molecules to the stratum corneum, maintaining skin hydration during active exfoliation.
- Barrier Support: Reinforces the skin's lipid matrix, helping to prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
- Non-Comedogenic: Rated 0/5 on the comedogenic scale; safe for all acne-prone skin types.
Arctium Lappa Root Extract (Burdock Root) tracePromising
Burdock root extract is a multi-functional botanical with documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-fungal, and sebum-regulating properties. It is particularly valued in acne formulations for its ability to help balance sebaceous gland activity and soothe irritated, blemish-prone skin. Also noted for mild anti-fungal properties beneficial for scalp and oily skin conditions.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Contains inulin and polyacetylenes that suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines.
- Seborrhea Regulation: Traditional and emerging data suggest it may help normalize sebum production on oily skin types.
- Antioxidant: Phenolic compounds provide free radical scavenging activity, protecting skin from oxidative acne triggers.
Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract (Willow Herb) tracePromising
Also known as Fireweed or Rosebay Willowherb, this botanical extract is prized for its strong anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties. Research suggests it may inhibit 5-alpha reductase enzyme, helping to reduce excess sebum production driven by androgens — a key factor in hormonal acne.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Oenothein B and tannins help reduce redness and calm irritated acne-prone skin.
- 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibition: May reduce androgen-driven sebum overproduction, useful for hormonal acne.
- Antimicrobial: In vitro studies show mild activity against acne-causing bacteria.
Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A Ester) tracePromising
A stable, ester form of Vitamin A that must be converted to retinoic acid by skin enzymes before becoming active. Gentler than retinol or prescription retinoids, it still promotes skin cell turnover at a milder rate, helping to fade post-acne hyperpigmentation and improve overall skin texture over continued use.
- Cell Turnover: Promotes epidermal renewal, helping clear post-inflammatory marks and reducing acne scar visibility over time.
- Gentler Retinoid: Lower conversion rate to retinoic acid means less irritation compared to retinol; suitable for combination with other actives.
- Antioxidant Function: Helps neutralize free radicals that can worsen acne inflammation.
Cystoseira Amentacea/Caespitosa Branchycarpa Extract (Marine Algae) tracePromising
A species of brown marine algae harvested from Mediterranean coastal regions. Rich in phlorotannins, fucoidans, and polyphenols, this extract brings potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory bioactivity to the formula. Marine algae extracts are increasingly featured in acne and anti-aging formulations for their multi-targeted skin benefits.
- Antioxidant: Phlorotannins provide superior free radical scavenging activity compared to many land-based botanicals.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Fucoidan compounds inhibit inflammatory pathways that contribute to acne lesion formation.
- Barrier Support: Marine polysaccharides may help reinforce the skin's protective barrier.
Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer & Dimethicone Crosspolymer traceProven
Crosslinked silicone elastomers that create the gel's smooth, non-greasy texture. They form a breathable, flexible film on the skin that allows the active ingredients to be delivered effectively while providing a comfortable, non-sticky finish. These silicones are considered non-comedogenic and are widely used in dermatological formulations.
- Texture Agent: Creates the characteristic silky, bouncy gel texture that absorbs quickly without residue.
- Non-Comedogenic: Silicone elastomers do not occlude pores; rated 0–1/5 comedogenic scale.
- Delivery Enhancement: Forms a reservoir system that can improve the sustained release of actives like salicylic acid.
Titanium Dioxide traceProven
Primarily functions as an opacifier and skin-tone evenor in this formula, giving the gel a slight white tint that helps blend on skin. At the low concentrations used here, it is not providing meaningful sun protection. Titanium Dioxide is among the safest and most inert cosmetic ingredients.
- Safety Profile: Listed as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the FDA for cosmetic use.
- Opacifier: Provides opacity and a skin-tone correcting effect in gel and cream formulations.

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply as a spot treatment after cleansing and toning, before moisturizing. For best results, use as part of the full Clear Proof® Acne System. Always follow with SPF in the morning.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse Thoroughly
Wash your face with a gentle, acne-appropriate cleanser (such as a salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide cleanser) and pat dry. Starting with clean skin maximizes the gel's efficacy and helps it penetrate more effectively.
Apply Toner (Optional)
If using a toner, apply it before the treatment gel. Allow the toner to dry completely (about 30 seconds) so you are applying the gel to a dry surface for optimal absorption.
Dispense a Small Amount
Squeeze a pea-sized amount of gel onto a clean fingertip. A little goes a long way — avoid applying too much at once, as excess product can pill or cause unnecessary drying.
Spot Treat or Cover Affected Areas
Gently dab and smooth the gel directly onto blemishes, blackhead-prone areas (nose, chin, forehead), or the entire affected area if needed. Cover all spots with a thin, even layer. Start with once daily application for the first week.
Allow to Absorb
Wait approximately 30 seconds for the gel to fully absorb before layering other products on top. The lightweight silicone base absorbs quickly without leaving a sticky residue.
Follow with Moisturizer & SPF
Apply an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer. In the morning, always follow with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, as salicylic acid can increase photosensitivity. Gradually increase usage to two or three times daily if skin tolerates it well.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESIdeal for oily skin — salicylic acid penetrates sebum-filled pores, while the lightweight gel formula doesn't add heaviness or shine. Delivers matte-finish treatment exactly where needed.
Works exceptionally well for combination skin — use as a targeted spot treatment on the oily T-zone without disturbing drier cheek areas. The gel texture blends seamlessly.
Formulated specifically for acne-prone skin. Salicylic acid treats existing breakouts while burdock root and willow herb extract help prevent new ones. Clinically tested in acne populations.
Suitable for normal skin with occasional breakouts. Use as a targeted spot treatment rather than all-over application. Start once daily to assess tolerance before increasing frequency.
Use with caution on dry skin. Salicylic acid can worsen dryness and peeling. If dry skin is prone to breakouts, use sparingly as a spot treatment only and always follow with a rich moisturizer.
Multiple fragrance compounds and salicylic acid may irritate very reactive skin. Patch test is strongly recommended. If redness or stinging occurs, discontinue use and switch to a fragrance-free alternative.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESA fragrance-free, 2% BHA leave-on gel that is a direct functional match. Fragrance-free makes it better for sensitive skin; however, it lacks the botanical extracts (burdock, willow herb) and Retinyl Palmitate found in the Mary Kay formula. Widely recommended by dermatologists.
A widely available drugstore option with the same active (salicylic acid). Significantly more affordable and available everywhere without a consultant. However, it is a rinse-off scrub format rather than a leave-on gel, reducing the contact time of the active ingredient. Less effective for deep pore treatment.
Higher concentration of salicylic acid (2%) in a minimalist anhydrous (oil-based) formula. More potent for blackhead removal but lacks the moisturizing humectants and botanical extracts of the Mary Kay formula. May be too drying for some; fragrance-free and paraben-free are advantages.

Frequently asked questions
FAQUse with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This formula contains Salicylic Acid and Retinyl Palmitate (a Vitamin A ester). While topical salicylic acid at low concentrations is generally considered lower risk than oral salicylates, most dermatologists and OB-GYNs recommend avoiding leave-on salicylic acid products during pregnancy out of caution. Retinyl Palmitate is a Vitamin A derivative, and any form of retinoid — even gentler ester forms — is typically advised against during pregnancy due to the potential risk of retinoid embryopathy at high systemic levels. Always consult your healthcare provider or OB-GYN before using this product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
No, this product is not considered safe for fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis). The formula contains several ingredients that can feed Malassezia yeast, including Polysorbate 85 and Polysorbate 20 (esters that can serve as a yeast nutrient source), Ethylhexyl Palmitate (a fatty acid ester), Butyl Avocadate (an avocado-derived ester), and fatty alcohols including Stearyl Alcohol and Cetearyl Alcohol. If you have confirmed or suspected fungal acne, look for a simpler, fungal-acne-safe salicylic acid product such as Paula's Choice BHA or The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution, and confirm compatibility using a fungal acne ingredient checker.
Layer with care. This product already contains salicylic acid (a BHA) and Retinyl Palmitate (a mild Vitamin A ester), so avoid adding additional leave-on AHA or BHA exfoliants in the same step to prevent over-exfoliation, irritation, and barrier damage. Using Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) separately — in the morning versus this product at night — is generally well tolerated. If you use a prescription or over-the-counter retinol product, do not apply it in the same step as this gel; alternate nights or use retinol in the AM/PM opposite to this product. When layering with benzoyl peroxide, be aware that BPO can oxidize and deactivate certain ingredients; if using both, apply in separate routine steps (e.g., BPO in AM, this gel as a PM spot treatment).
This product is best suited for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin types. The lightweight gel texture, matte finish, and salicylic acid active make it particularly effective for oily skin with blackheads, whiteheads, and papules. It can also work well for normal skin with occasional breakouts when used as a targeted spot treatment. Those with dry or sensitive skin should use it sparingly and only on active blemishes, always following with a hydrating moisturizer. It is not recommended as an all-over treatment for dry or very sensitive skin types due to the exfoliating nature of salicylic acid and the fragrance compounds in the formula.
Most users begin to see initial results — such as reduced redness and size of active pimples — within 24 to 72 hours of first application. More significant clearing of blackheads and whiteheads typically occurs within 1–2 weeks of consistent daily use. To see improvements in preventing new breakouts and fading post-acne marks (thanks to Retinyl Palmitate), allow 4–8 weeks of regular use. Mary Kay's clinical studies on the broader Clear Proof® Acne System showed continued skin improvement over 12 weeks of use, with 80% of participants reporting significantly clearer skin. Consistency is key — results diminish if use is discontinued.
Apply this gel as step 3 in your routine: after cleansing and toning, but before serums and moisturizer. Specifically: (1) Cleanse with your acne cleanser, (2) Apply toner if using one and let it dry, (3) Apply a small amount of this gel directly onto blemishes or affected areas, (4) Wait 30 seconds for it to absorb, (5) Apply any serums or essences, (6) Moisturize with an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizer, and (7) In the morning, always finish with SPF 30+ sunscreen since salicylic acid increases photosensitivity. It works best as part of the Mary Kay Clear Proof® system but can also be used as a standalone spot treatment.
This product has a low-to-moderate comedogenic rating of 2 out of 5. Stearyl Alcohol (rated 2/5) and Glyceryl Stearate (rated 1/5) are the most notable comedogenic ingredients, but they are present in relatively low concentrations. The silicone-based ingredients (Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer) are rated 0–1/5 and are generally non-pore-clogging. When used as a targeted spot treatment — dabbed only onto blemishes rather than spread all over the face — the risk of clogging pores is low for most users. For extremely acne-prone skin, if you find any product aggravates breakouts, discontinue and consult a dermatologist.
The Period After Opening (PAO) for this product is 12 months — meaning you should use it within one year of first opening to ensure maximum efficacy and safety of the formula. The 1 oz (28g) size used as a targeted spot treatment typically lasts 2–4 months with daily use, depending on how many spots are being treated and the amount applied per application. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight to preserve the salicylic acid potency and prevent Retinyl Palmitate degradation. If the product changes in color, texture, or smell before the PAO date, discontinue use.
Verdict: The Mary Kay Clear Proof® Acne Treatment Gel is a well-formulated, botanically-enhanced salicylic acid spot treatment that delivers solid results for oily and acne-prone skin. Its combination of a proven BHA active with skin-soothing extracts (Burdock Root, Willow Herb, Marine Algae) and gentle Vitamin A support (Retinyl Palmitate) sets it apart from simpler drugstore alternatives. The lightweight, fast-absorbing gel texture is a genuine strength — it treats without heaviness or stickiness. However, the presence of fragrance compounds, Methylparaben, and Malassezia-feeding esters limits its appeal for sensitive skin, fragrance-reactive users, and anyone dealing with fungal acne. The small 1 oz size and consultant-only distribution model are practical drawbacks. For oily, acne-prone skin without sensitivity concerns, this is a genuinely effective and dermatologist-tested option — especially valuable within the complete Clear Proof® System.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
