ROUTINEApply as the LAST step of your PM routine, directly on blemishes. Do not layer other products on top. Rinse off in the morning.
How to use
HOW TO USEDo NOT Shake the Bottle
The product is designed as a bi-phase solution. The pink sediment at the bottom contains the active treatment - shaking will reduce effectiveness.
Dip Cotton Swab to Bottom
Insert a cotton swab through the clear liquid until it reaches the pink sediment at the bottom. Coat the tip with the pink mixture.
Dab on Blemishes - Don't Rub
Apply directly on surface blemishes (whiteheads). Dab gently - do not rub in. Use a fresh cotton swab side if treating multiple spots.
Let Dry & Sleep
Allow the pink dots to dry completely (2-3 minutes). Leave on overnight as a mini spot mask while you sleep.
Rinse Off in Morning
Wash off the dried treatment with your morning cleanser. You should notice visibly reduced blemishes.

Great for targeting oily T-zone breakouts without affecting drier cheek areas. Spot treatment approach is perfect for combination skin.
Works well for occasional breakouts. The drying formula may be slightly intense, so use sparingly and follow with moisturizer elsewhere.
Use with caution. The alcohol and drying ingredients can exacerbate dryness. Apply only on active blemishes and ensure rest of face is well-moisturized.
Patch test first. Contains alcohol and camphor which may irritate reactive skin. Some users report stinging upon application.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESNearly identical formula with sulfur, salicylic acid, zinc oxide, and camphor. Slightly less calamine. Users report it stays on better overnight but works slightly slower.
Uses benzoyl peroxide instead of sulfur/salicylic acid combo. Different mechanism but equally effective for many. Clear formula that can be worn during the day.
Korean alternative with BHA, niacinamide, and centella. Less drying than Mario Badescu. Better for sensitive skin but may work slower on stubborn spots.
Straightforward 2% salicylic acid formula. Less complex than Drying Lotion (no sulfur, zinc, or calamine). Good for BHA purists but lacks multi-action benefits.

Frequently asked questions
FAQUse with caution. The formula contains salicylic acid, which in high doses or widespread application should be avoided during pregnancy. However, small amounts used as a spot treatment are generally considered low risk by most dermatologists. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists considers topical products with 2% or less salicylic acid safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always consult your healthcare provider before use. If breastfeeding, avoid applying to areas that may contact your baby's skin or mouth.
Yes! This product is confirmed fungal acne safe by multiple ingredient databases (SkinCarisma, SkinSort, Folliculitis Scout). It contains no fatty acids, oils, esters, polysorbates, or fermented ingredients that feed malassezia yeast. Additionally, the sulfur in the formula has antifungal properties that may actually help combat fungal acne. This makes it an excellent choice for those dealing with pityrosporum folliculitis.
Use with caution when combining with other actives. Since Drying Lotion already contains salicylic acid (a BHA), avoid layering additional BHA products on the same area. Using it alongside retinol, vitamin C, or AHAs on the same spots may cause excessive irritation, dryness, or sensitivity. If you use these actives in your routine, apply them to the rest of your face and reserve the Drying Lotion only for active blemishes as a spot treatment. Always introduce new combinations gradually.
This product is best suited for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin types. The drying formula with sulfur and salicylic acid is specifically designed to absorb excess oil and treat blemishes. Those with dry or sensitive skin should use with caution as the alcohol and active ingredients can be irritating. If you have dry skin, ensure the rest of your face is well-moisturized and use the product sparingly only on active blemishes.
Most users see visible results overnight (within 8-12 hours). Surface blemishes with a visible head typically appear smaller, flatter, and less red by morning. For stubborn spots, 2-3 consecutive nights of application usually shows significant improvement. However, this product only works on surface blemishes - deep cystic acne requires a different treatment approach (consider the Buffering Lotion for under-the-skin breakouts).
Apply Drying Lotion as the LAST step of your nighttime skincare routine, after cleansing, toner, serum, and moisturizer. Dip a cotton swab into the pink sediment (don't shake!) and dab directly on blemishes. Do not rub in or layer any products on top. The pink dots should be left on overnight and rinsed off in the morning. This is a PM-only product - it's visible pink and not suitable for daytime use.
No, this product has a low comedogenic rating of 1/5. It is oil-free, silicone-free, and contains no heavy emollients that typically clog pores. The salicylic acid actually helps unclog existing pore blockages. However, some users report that the talc in the formula can occasionally cause issues for very acne-prone skin. If you're concerned, patch test on a small area first.
The product has a 12-month Period After Opening (PAO). Since it's used as a spot treatment, one 1oz bottle typically lasts 3-6 months with regular use. Store upright in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. Do not shake the bottle - if accidentally shaken, set it on a flat surface and let the pink sediment settle back to the bottom (may take a few hours). The alcohol in the formula acts as a preservative to maintain stability.
Verdict: Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is a cult-classic spot treatment that has earned its legendary status. The combination of salicylic acid, sulfur, calamine, and zinc oxide delivers fast, visible results on surface blemishes overnight. Its fungal acne-safe formula and affordable price point make it accessible to a wide range of users. However, the drying formula isn't ideal for everyone - those with dry or sensitive skin should proceed with caution. The medicinal scent and tendency to flake off during sleep are minor drawbacks. For the best results, use it specifically for whiteheads and surface blemishes (not cystic acne), and pair with a good moisturizer on the rest of your face. A worthy addition to any acne-fighting arsenal.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
