Face & Body Wash
Face & Body Wash
Product Description
Product overview
A fragrance-free, gel-based face and body cleanser from Almond Clear powered by mandelic (almond) acid — an alpha-hydroxy acid derived from bitter almonds — alongside a blend of botanical extracts. Formulated to gently exfoliate, fight acne-causing bacteria, reduce fungal acne and folliculitis, minimize ingrown hairs, and fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation — all without over-drying the skin. Suitable for daily use on face, chest, back, and body.
Mandelic Acid Exfoliation
AHA derived from bitter almonds with a large molecular size for slower, gentler penetration than glycolic acid — ideal for daily use without over-exfoliating.
Texture & feel
SENSORYMandelic Acid Exfoliation
AHA derived from bitter almonds with a large molecular size for slower, gentler penetration than glycolic acid — ideal for daily use without over-exfoliating.
Antibacterial & Antifungal
Mandelic acid exhibits proven antibacterial properties and is effective against Malassezia yeast, making it one of the few AHAs that actively addresses fungal acne and folliculitis.
Therapeutic Botanicals
A blend of witch hazel, green tea, pomegranate, lemongrass, and goldenseal extracts provides antioxidant protection, soothing, and astringent support.
Face & Body Versatility
Formulated to be used head-to-toe — effective on face, chest, back, shoulders, bikini area, and buttocks — addressing acne and ingrown hairs wherever they occur.
Ingrown Hair & Shaving Gel
Can be used as a shaving gel for those prone to razor bumps and ingrown hairs, or applied post-waxing to calm irritation and prevent ingrowns from forming.
Dark Spot Reduction
Mandelic acid has been studied for its ability to reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and is considered safer for darker skin tones than glycolic acid.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEMandelic acid is an AHA. While low-concentration AHAs in rinse-off cleansers are generally considered low-risk, mandelic acid has limited specific pregnancy safety data. Consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The formula is free of retinoids, salicylic acid, and hydroquinone.
This formula contains zero fatty acid esters, ferments, oils, or polysorbates that feed Malassezia yeast. Mandelic acid itself has antifungal activity against Malassezia. Rated 0 fungal acne triggers — confirmed safe for fungal acne-prone skin.
No pore-clogging oils or waxes in the formula. Glycerin and butylene glycol are rated 0 on the comedogenic scale. The surfactants and botanical extracts are lightweight and rinse clean. Excellent choice for acne-prone or oily skin.
Fragrance-free and dye-free, making it suitable for reactive skin. Mandelic acid's larger molecule size causes less initial irritation than glycolic acid. However, those with rosacea or very reactive skin should patch test first, as some users report sensitivity.
Like all AHAs, mandelic acid may increase photosensitivity. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen during the day when using this product, especially if you are also using leave-on AHA/BHA treatments in your routine.
Mandelic acid is specifically noted as safer for deeper skin tones compared to glycolic acid because it has a lower risk of triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) — an important consideration for Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSWater (Purified Water) BaseEssential
Purified, deionized water serves as the universal solvent and carrier for all active and functional ingredients. Using deionized water (rather than tap water) improves product stability and reduces contamination risk over the shelf life of the product.
- Function: Universal solvent, carrier, formula base
- Comedogenicity: 0/5
- Irritancy: None
Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate ~10–15%Cleansing
A biodegradable anionic surfactant derived from alpha-olefins that provides strong cleansing power and rich foam. It effectively removes sebum, sweat, bacteria, and environmental debris from the skin and body. While it offers excellent cleaning performance, it is stronger than some alternatives and is balanced in this formula by the gentler cocamidopropyl betaine.
- Function: Primary surfactant, foam booster, cleansing agent
- Biodegradable: Yes
- Note: Stronger than sulfate-free alternatives; balanced by CAPB in this formula
Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) ~5–8%Proven
A mild, amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil that reduces the harshness of stronger surfactants in the formula. It enhances foam stability, improves skin feel, and acts as a secondary cleansing agent. Widely used in gentle skincare formulations including baby products. Highly biodegradable.
- Function: Co-surfactant, foam stabilizer, mildness enhancer
- Origin: Coconut oil-derived (synthetic processing)
- Comedogenicity: 0/5
Glycerin ~3–5%Proven
A naturally-occurring humectant found in the skin's own lipid barrier. Glycerin draws moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers to the surface, supporting hydration. Research published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science shows it is more effective as a humectant than AHAs and hyaluronic acid. Critically, even in a rinse-off cleanser, glycerin leaves behind a hydrating film that counteracts the potential dryness of the surfactants.
- Function: Humectant, skin-identical moisturizer, barrier protector
- Comedogenicity: 0/5 — will not clog pores
- Study: More effective humectant than hyaluronic acid (2016 research)
Mandelic Acid ~1–3%Proven
The hero active in this formula. Mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. Its large molecular weight (~152 Da vs glycolic acid's ~76 Da) means it penetrates the skin more slowly and evenly, resulting in significantly less irritation and redness than other AHAs. It exfoliates the stratum corneum, unclogs pores, reduces acne blemishes, and has been clinically studied for hyperpigmentation reduction. Uniquely among AHAs, mandelic acid has demonstrated antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and antifungal activity against Malassezia species, making it effective against both bacterial and fungal acne.
- AHA Type: Alpha-Hydroxy Acid derived from bitter almonds
- Molecular Weight: ~152 Da (larger = gentler than glycolic)
- Clinical Evidence: Studies show reduction in melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and acne comparable to glycolic acid with fewer side effects
- Antibacterial: Active against Propionibacterium acnes (acne bacteria)
- Antifungal: Active against Malassezia (fungal acne/folliculitis)
- Collagen: AHAs stimulate collagen production, supporting anti-aging benefits
Butylene Glycol ~2–4%Proven
A versatile glycol that functions as a solvent, humectant, penetration enhancer, and slip agent. It helps other active ingredients (including mandelic acid) absorb more effectively into the skin, improves spreadability, and attracts moisture. Approved by Ecocert and widely regarded as safe with no significant safety concerns.
- Function: Solvent, humectant, penetration enhancer, slip agent
- Comedogenicity: 0–1/5
- Safety: Approved by Ecocert, used in food as an additive
Hydroxyethylcellulose ~0.5–1.5%Functional
A plant-derived cellulose polymer that acts as a thickening agent, giving this formula its characteristic clear gel texture. It is compatible with virtually all co-ingredients, non-irritating, non-comedogenic, and provides a smooth, slip-enhancing feel during application.
- Function: Thickener, gel former, texture agent
- Origin: Derived from cellulose (plant cell walls)
- Comedogenicity: 0/5
Plant Ash Extract (Goldenseal / Horsetail) BlendPromising
Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) and horsetail plant extracts contribute astringent, antimicrobial, and soothing properties to the formula. Goldenseal contains berberine, a compound with documented antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity. Horsetail is rich in silica and flavonoids which help strengthen and soothe irritated skin.
- Goldenseal: Contains berberine — antibacterial, anti-inflammatory
- Horsetail: Rich in silica and flavonoids — soothing, antioxidant
- Function: Astringent, antimicrobial support, antioxidant
Gold (Colloidal Gold) TracePromising
Colloidal gold has been explored in cosmetics for its potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. At trace concentrations used in topical cosmetics, it is considered skin-safe and non-irritating. It adds a premium positioning to the formula, though its clinical efficacy at wash-off concentrations remains limited in evidence.
- Function: Anti-inflammatory support, antioxidant, premium marker
- Concentration: Trace (decorative/functional dual role)
Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Oil (Lemongrass) TracePromising
Lemongrass essential oil provides natural antimicrobial properties and a mild purifying effect. It contains citral and geraniol compounds which have demonstrated activity against a range of bacteria. At the trace levels used here in a rinse-off product, it contributes functional benefits without significant fragrance impact.
- Function: Natural antimicrobial, astringent support
- Key Compounds: Citral, geraniol (antimicrobial actives)
Hamamelis Virginiana Water (Witch Hazel) ~1–3%Proven
Witch hazel is a well-established botanical with clinically supported astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. It helps tighten pores, reduce redness, and soothe irritated skin. The distillate form (witch hazel water) used here is gentler than alcohol-based witch hazel, preserving the beneficial tannins while avoiding potential dryness.
- Function: Astringent, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, pore-tightening
- Form: Distillate (alcohol-free) — gentler than tincture
- Active Compounds: Tannins, gallic acid, proanthocyanidins
Punica Granatum Seed Powder (Pomegranate) TracePromising
Pomegranate seed powder is rich in ellagic acid and punicalagins — powerful antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals, support skin barrier function, and may promote collagen synthesis. Research suggests pomegranate extract can inhibit melanin formation, contributing to the product's hyperpigmentation-reducing benefits.
- Key Compounds: Ellagic acid, punicalagins, anthocyanins
- Function: Antioxidant, collagen-supporting, brightening aid
Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green Tea) TraceProven
Green tea extract is one of the most studied botanical antioxidants in skincare. It is rich in EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a potent polyphenol with documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. It helps calm post-cleansing redness and may support the antibacterial effect of mandelic acid.
- Key Active: EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate)
- Function: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial support
- Comedogenicity: 0/5
Phenoxyethanol & Ethylhexylglycerin ~1% / <0.5%Functional
A globally accepted preservative system. Phenoxyethanol is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative approved worldwide (EU, FDA, Japan) at up to 1%. Ethylhexylglycerin functions as a co-preservative and skin-conditioning agent that boosts the efficacy of phenoxyethanol, allowing it to be used at lower concentrations for an improved safety profile. This combination is paraben-free and well-tolerated by most skin types.
- Function: Broad-spectrum preservation, product safety
- Phenoxyethanol limit: 1% (EU/global standard) — paraben-free
- Safety: Approved by Ecocert when used with ethylhexylglycerin

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEUse as the first step of your AM and/or PM skincare routine. Follow with a leave-on mandelic acid treatment (Almond Clear serum) for enhanced results. Always apply SPF 30+ during daytime use with AHA products.
How to use
HOW TO USEWet the Skin
Wet your face or body with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can strip the skin barrier and exacerbate inflammation in acne-prone or sensitive skin.
Apply & Lather Gently
Dispense a small amount (dime-to-quarter size for face; more for body) and work into a lather. Massage gently over the skin using circular motions for 30–60 seconds. Do not scrub hard — this aggravates blemishes and spreads bacteria.
Optional: Use as Shaving Gel
Apply directly to areas prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps before shaving. The mandelic acid formula helps reduce friction and prepares the skin to minimize post-shave irritation.
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse completely with cool or lukewarm water, ensuring no residue remains — especially in body folds or hairline. Pat dry gently with a clean towel.
Follow with Leave-On Treatment
For best results, pair with an Almond Clear mandelic acid serum or your preferred treatment. This cleanser alone cannot fully clear blemishes — a leave-on treatment that stays on the skin provides the sustained active contact time needed to clear acne and folliculitis.
Apply SPF in the Morning
AHA ingredients like mandelic acid increase UV sensitivity. Always finish your morning routine with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen when using this product regularly.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESIdeal match. Mandelic acid exfoliates sebum-clogged pores, controls oil, fights acne bacteria, and addresses both bacterial and fungal breakouts. Non-comedogenic formula will not worsen oiliness.
Works well across T-zone and drier areas. The formula is gentle enough not to over-dry cheeks while effectively managing oil in the forehead and nose zone. Botanical extracts add soothing balance.
An excellent preventive and maintenance cleanser for normal skin. Delivers gentle exfoliation, keeps pores clear, and brightens skin tone with regular use.
The surfactants and AHA can be mildly drying for already-dry skin types. Use only once daily (PM recommended) and always follow with a rich moisturizer. May need to alternate with a gentler, non-AHA cleanser.
While fragrance-free and milder than glycolic acid cleansers, some sensitive and rosacea-prone users have reported flare-ups with AHA cleansers. Patch test thoroughly before full-face application. Start with every-other-day use.
This product is purpose-built for this skin concern. Mandelic acid's antifungal activity against Malassezia, combined with a fungal acne safe (0 triggers) formula, makes it one of the top choices for body and face folliculitis.

DUPESMandelic acid as the primary AHA active; fragrance-free and formulated for body acne and texture concerns. Naturium is widely praised for quality at an accessible price. Lacks the goldenseal/pomegranate botanicals but delivers comparable AHA cleansing. Available at Target and Ulta.
Not a cleanser but a highly affordable mandelic acid treatment. For those who prefer to use a gentle everyday cleanser and apply mandelic acid as a leave-on serum, The Ordinary offers 10% concentration for a fraction of the price. Different format but overlapping active ingredient goal.
Uses salicylic acid (BHA) rather than mandelic acid (AHA) for exfoliation. Excellent for bacterial acne and body texture, with ceramides that support the skin barrier. Not safe for fungal acne. Much more accessible price for a similar cleansing position in a routine. Fragrance-free.

Frequently asked questions
FAQThe formula contains mandelic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA). The formula is free from retinoids, salicylic acid, and hydroquinone — ingredients specifically flagged to avoid during pregnancy. While AHAs in rinse-off products are generally considered lower-risk than leave-on formulations (minimal absorption due to short contact time), specific safety data for mandelic acid in pregnancy is limited. The product also contains a trace amount of lemongrass essential oil, which has some precautionary notes during pregnancy. We recommend consulting your OB-GYN or dermatologist before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding to confirm it is appropriate for your specific situation.
Yes — this is one of the key selling points of this product. The formula contains zero fungal acne triggers: no fatty acid esters, no fermented ingredients, no polysorbates, no oils that feed Malassezia yeast. Importantly, mandelic acid itself has documented antifungal activity against Malassezia species (the yeast responsible for fungal acne and pityrosporum folliculitis). This makes it one of the few AHA cleansers that is both safe for fungal acne and actively helpful in treating it. It has been rated 0 fungal acne triggers by folliculitis-focused analysis sites.
This is a rinse-off cleanser, which significantly reduces active ingredient contact time. As a cleanser, it is generally compatible with leave-on retinol, vitamin C, and other actives in your routine — applied in the correct sequence (cleanser first, leave-on actives after). However, be mindful of cumulative exfoliation: if you are also using a leave-on AHA or BHA (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acid) serum or toner, combining that with this AHA cleanser daily may over-exfoliate your skin. Start by using this cleanser once daily and monitor your skin's response before layering additional exfoliants. If using retinol, apply it after this cleanser has been fully rinsed, ensuring skin is dry before retinol application to reduce irritation.
It is best suited for oily, combination, acne-prone, and fungal acne / folliculitis-prone skin. It is also a strong choice for those with normal skin who want gentle daily exfoliation and clarity. It is less ideal for dry skin (may be mildly drying) and should be used cautiously with rosacea or very reactive/sensitive skin — a patch test is strongly recommended for these types before full use. It is notably excellent for all skin tones including deeper complexions, as mandelic acid has a lower risk of triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation compared to other AHAs.
Most users notice cleaner, less congested-feeling skin within the first 1–2 weeks. Visible reduction in active acne and folliculitis bumps typically appears around weeks 3–4. Fading of dark spots and post-acne hyperpigmentation becomes noticeable around month 2. It is important to note that this is a rinse-off cleanser — mandelic acid is on the skin for only a short time before rinsing. For faster and more significant results, the brand strongly recommends pairing this cleanser with an Almond Clear leave-on mandelic acid serum, which provides sustained active contact time on the skin throughout the day or night.
This product is always used as the first step — the cleansing step. Use it in the shower or at the sink to cleanse face and/or body before applying any other skincare products. After rinsing and patting skin dry, proceed with your toner, serum, moisturizer, and (in the morning) sunscreen. Do not apply it on top of other products — it is a wash-off product only. It can be used in your morning routine, evening routine, or both — though those with drier or more sensitive skin are best served using it once daily (evening) to avoid over-cleansing.
No — this product is non-comedogenic with a rating of 1/5 (very low). The formula contains no pore-clogging oils, waxes, or fatty acid derivatives. Glycerin and butylene glycol are both rated 0 on the comedogenic scale. The surfactants and botanical extracts rinse away completely, leaving no pore-blocking residue. This makes it an appropriate choice even for those with highly acne-prone or clogged pore concerns. Mandelic acid's exfoliating action additionally helps to dissolve the bonds that hold dead skin cells in pores, further reducing the likelihood of comedone formation.
The recommended period after opening (PAO) is 12 months. The phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin preservative combination keeps the formula stable and safe to use for up to one year after first opening. For best results, store the bottle in a cool, dry location (not in a steamy shower environment for extended periods), keep the cap closed between uses, and avoid introducing water directly into the bottle. The standard 6.7 fl oz size typically lasts 1–2 months with daily face use, or 4–6 weeks with combined face and body use.
Verdict: TheAlmond Clear Face & Body Wash earns its reputation as a go-to cleanser for acne-prone, folliculitis-prone, and ingrown hair-prone skin. Its combination of mandelic acid — one of the gentlest yet most versatile AHAs available — with a clean, fragrance-free, fungal acne safe formula puts it in a class of its own among daily exfoliating body washes. The addition of witch hazel, green tea, pomegranate, and goldenseal adds meaningful botanical support. The primary limitation is inherent to any rinse-off cleanser: active ingredients like mandelic acid have limited contact time before rinsing, and significant results require pairing with a leave-on treatment. Price is a consideration versus drugstore alternatives, but for those specifically battling fungal acne or folliculitis, this formula's zero fungal acne triggers combined with mandelic acid's antifungal action makes it a uniquely well-suited choice.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
