Safety & compatibility
SAFEThis formula does not contain retinoids, salicylic acid, or hydroquinone. However, it contains Lactobacillus ferment filtrate and several botanical extracts not well-studied in pregnancy. Consult your OB/GYN before use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Not considered safe for fungal acne. The formula contains Ethyl Linoleate (a fatty acid ester), Lupinus Albus Seed Oil (white lupin seed oil), Cera Alba (beeswax), and Lactobacillus ferment — all known triggers for Malassezia folliculitis. Avoid if you are prone to fungal breakouts.
The primary emollient base is dimethicone (non-comedogenic, rating 1). Wheat germ oil (Triticum Vulgare) has a comedogenic rating of 5, but it appears low on the INCI list. Overall risk of pore-clogging is low for most skin types at typical usage amounts.
Fragrance-free, dye-free, and formulated without known high-irritation actives like retinol, AHA, or BHA. The silicone-rich base provides a cushioning, low-irritation application experience around the delicate eye area.
Unlike most eye creams, this serum is specifically formulated and physician-approved for use on eyelid skin, right up to the lash line. The silicone gel base minimizes risk of product migration into the eye.
Growth factors and retinol offer complementary but distinct anti-aging mechanisms. Apply this serum to damp skin first (AM/PM), then apply retinoids as part of your PM routine only. Avoid mixing in the same application step.
High-concentration vitamin C serums can break down growth factor proteins. If using both, apply vitamin C in the AM and reserve the Growth Factor Eye Serum for PM use, or allow a full absorption period of 20–30 minutes between applications.
Preserved with a modern combination of Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Dehydroacetate, and Potassium Sorbate — considered among the safest available preservation systems in medical-grade cosmetics.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSDipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate (SYN®-AKE) ~0.001–0.005%Proven
A synthetic neuropeptide known commercially as SYN®-AKE, inspired by the action of Waglerin-1 — a protein found in Temple Viper venom. It acts as a neurotransmitter inhibitor, blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction to temporarily relax the micro-contractions responsible for expression lines and crow's feet around the eyes.
- Mechanism: Inhibits nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, reducing muscle contraction intensity that causes dynamic wrinkles.
- Clinical evidence: A manufacturer-sponsored in-vitro study showed up to 52% reduction in wrinkle depth after 28 days at 4% concentration.
- Eye-area benefit: Most effective for expression lines and crow's feet formed by repetitive facial movement.
Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate ~0.1–0.5%Proven
An advanced derivative of sodium hyaluronate where the hydroxyl groups are acetylated, improving its lipophilicity and skin-binding affinity. Unlike standard hyaluronic acid that sits on the surface, sodium acetylated hyaluronate binds more tenaciously to the skin's outer layers, delivering prolonged, filler-like plumping and hydration — particularly effective for filling hollow tear trough areas and under-eye creases.
- Compared to standard HA: Greater retention on the skin surface; resists rapid evaporation and washing off.
- ZO's claim: Plumps and visibly fills in creases immediately upon application, with cumulative improvement over time.
- Barrier support: Reinforces the epidermal moisture barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss in the thin periorbital skin.
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) ~0.05–0.1%Promising
The primary energy currency of living cells, ATP is a core component of ZO's proprietary ZPRO® technology. Topically applied, it is theorized to provide bio-available energy to epidermal cells, supporting cellular repair, collagen synthesis, and accelerated skin renewal — concepts mirroring the restorative pathways leveraged in professional post-procedure care.
- Cellular energy: ATP fuels enzymatic processes involved in collagen and elastin production.
- Post-procedure use: Frequently found in physician-dispensed recovery protocols after lasers, peels, and microneedling.
- Topical penetration: Preclinical data suggests partial hydrolysis to adenosine (a proven anti-aging compound) upon skin contact.
Beta-Glucan ~0.1–0.3%Proven
A polysaccharide derived from oats, yeast, or mushrooms, beta-glucan is a well-researched ingredient with strong immunomodulatory and wound-healing properties. In the eye area, it calms post-environmental inflammation, reduces redness, and has been shown to stimulate macrophage activity and cytokine release — accelerating skin repair while providing deep hydration.
- Hydration: Penetrates the stratum corneum to deliver lasting moisture deeper than many conventional humectants.
- Anti-inflammatory: Reduces redness and soothes reactive skin around the orbital area.
- Wound healing: Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm beta-glucan accelerates epidermal regeneration post-injury.
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5 (EYESERYL®) ~0.001–0.01%Promising
A tetrapeptide specifically designed to address periorbital puffiness and eye bags. It works through anti-edema and anti-glycation mechanisms — reducing fluid accumulation in the under-eye area and inhibiting collagen glycation (a process that stiffens and ages connective tissue). Its anti-glycation activity also helps to prevent the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) that contribute to skin yellowing and loss of elasticity.
- Clinical study: Manufacturer-sponsored study of 20 volunteers using 10% EYESERYL formulation found 70% showed improvement by day 15 and 95% by day 60.
- Anti-edema: Reduces water retention and fluid accumulation beneath the lower eyelid.
- Anti-glycation: Slows cross-linking of collagen fibers, helping maintain under-eye firmness and suppleness.
Buddleja Davidii Meristem Cell Culture ~0.05–0.2%Promising
Plant stem cells derived from the butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii), a plant notable for its extreme resilience and UV-resistance. Meristem cell cultures are harvested from the plant's actively dividing cells and have been shown in in-vitro studies to protect human skin cells from UV-induced damage, support epigenetic maintenance, and reduce signs of photoaging — making them particularly relevant for the UV-exposed periorbital zone.
- Epigenetic protection: Preserves DNA methylation patterns associated with youthful gene expression in skin cells.
- UV-stress resistance: Phytochemicals in Buddleja are among the most potent UV-absorbing compounds found in the plant kingdom.
- Anti-aging: In-vitro studies show reduction in expression of senescence-associated markers in fibroblasts.
Disodium Acetyl Glucosamine Phosphate ~0.1–0.5%Promising
A phosphorylated derivative of N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG), a naturally occurring compound in the skin's extracellular matrix. It supports the skin's natural hyaluronic acid synthesis pathways and has been clinically shown to improve skin hydration, enhance elasticity, and support barrier function. ZO Skin Health highlights it alongside fermented red ginseng extract as a key hydration-restoring complex within the formula.
- HA synthesis: Precursor to hyaluronic acid production within the epidermis, supporting natural plumpness from within.
- Elasticity: Shown to restore hydration and support elasticity and firmness in clinical assessments.
- Brightening potential: N-acetyl glucosamine has secondary evidence for reducing hyperpigmentation by inhibiting tyrosinase activity.
Cordyceps Militaris Mycelium Extract ~0.05–0.2%Promising
A medicinal fungal extract from the caterpillar fungus, long used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It contains cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine), polysaccharides, and adenosine — compounds with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and energizing properties. In skincare, Cordyceps mycelium is prized for combating oxidative stress, supporting cellular ATP production, and reducing UV-induced melanogenesis (dark spot formation).
- Antioxidant: Rich in polysaccharides that scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative damage to periorbital skin.
- Dark circle support: Inhibits melanogenesis, helping reduce pigmentation-related dark circles over time.
- Energizing: Cordycepin promotes cellular ATP synthesis, complementing the ATP in the ZPRO® complex.

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply immediately after cleansing on clean, dry skin — AM and/or PM. Use before heavier serums, moisturizers, and SPF. If pairing with retinoids, apply growth factor serum first to damp skin, then retinoid on top in your PM routine.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse & Pat Dry
Begin with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Pat the face (especially the eye area) dry with a clean towel. Apply to clean, dry skin for optimal ingredient penetration.
Load the Cooling Applicator
Gently squeeze the wand/tube to release a pea-sized amount of serum onto the metal cooling tip. Do not pump or shake. Less is more — one small pea-size bead is sufficient for both eyes.
Apply in Gentle Circles
Draw small, gentle outward circles with the cooling tip around the full orbital bone — from inner corner under the eye, outward, and then around the upper orbital/eyelid. Include the entire periorbital zone, from under-eye hollow to eyelid crease if desired.
Allow to Absorb
Wait 30–60 seconds for the serum to fully absorb before applying the next product. The gel-serum texture sinks in rapidly without leaving residue. Follow with your ZO Intense Eye Crème or regular moisturizer if desired.
Use AM & PM (or as Needed)
For optimal results, use morning and evening as part of your daily regimen. Can also be used as needed for an immediate de-puffing effect (e.g., after travel, poor sleep, or fluid retention).
Who is it for?

Frequently asked questions
FAQThis serum does not contain retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreen actives — the most commonly cited pregnancy concerns. However, it contains Lactobacillus ferment filtrate, fermented ginseng extract, and several potent botanical actives (Angelica Polymorpha Sinensis Root Extract, Buddleja Davidii Meristem Cell Culture, Cordyceps Militaris Mycelium Extract) that lack robust pregnancy safety data. As a general precaution, consult your OB/GYN or dermatologist before using during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Medical-grade cosmeceutical formulas are typically used with physician guidance for pregnant patients.
No — this product is not considered safe for fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis). The formula contains Ethyl Linoleate (a C18 fatty acid ester), Lupinus Albus Seed Oil, Cera Alba (beeswax), Lactobacillus Ferment, and PEG-12 Glyceryl Laurate — all of which can feed Malassezia yeast. The eye area is generally less susceptible to fungal folliculitis than the forehead and back, but those with known Malassezia sensitivity should be cautious and consult a dermatologist before use.
Growth factor proteins can be destabilized by high-concentration actives like L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C), AHAs, and BHAs. ZO's official guidance recommends applying growth factor products after cleansing and before other actives. If using retinol, apply the Growth Factor Eye Serum first to damp skin and then apply retinoids as part of your PM routine — they work through different pathways and complement each other well. For vitamin C: use it in the AM routine and reserve the Growth Factor Eye Serum for PM (or allow 20–30 minutes between applications). Avoid aggressive exfoliating acids directly around the eye area regardless of what eye serum you're using.
It is suitable for all skin types, but excels for mature, normal, oily, and combination skin. The lightweight silicone-gel base makes it particularly comfortable for oily-skinned users who dislike heavy eye creams. For dry skin types, it delivers meaningful hydration from sodium acetylated hyaluronate and beta-glucan, but extremely dry skin may benefit from layering a richer eye cream on top. Sensitive skin tolerates it well thanks to the fragrance-free, dye-free formulation. Those with fungal-acne-prone skin should exercise caution (see above).
Immediate results (day 1): The cooling applicator provides instant de-puffing and soothing upon contact. The sodium acetylated hyaluronate plumps the under-eye area visibly within minutes of application. Short-term results (2–4 weeks): The neuropeptide (SYN®-AKE) begins reducing the appearance of crow's feet and expression lines. Consistent puffiness reduction with daily use. Long-term results (8–12 weeks): Growth factor technology delivers cumulative improvements in skin firmness, collagen density, and reduction of deep orbital creasing. ZO's clinical trials for the Growth Factor Serum family report 93% of patients experiencing measurable improvements at 12 weeks.
Apply immediately after cleansing (and toner if used), on clean, dry skin — before any heavier serums, moisturizers, or SPF. ZO recommends using it both morning and evening. In a full routine: (1) Cleanser → (2) Toner/Essence → (3) Growth Factor Eye Serum → (4) Face serum → (5) Moisturizer → (6) Sunscreen (AM only). If pairing with retinoids, apply this eye serum first to slightly damp skin, allow it to absorb, then apply retinol in your PM routine. A little goes a long way — one small pea-size amount covers both eyes.
The overall comedogenic rating is assessed at 2/5 — low risk. The primary base is dimethicone (comedogenic rating 0–1), which is non-pore-clogging and actually helps create a smooth, non-occlusive barrier. Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil has a comedogenic rating of 5, but it appears near the bottom of the ingredient list (suggesting a low concentration). PEG-35 Castor Oil and Cera Alba also appear at low-concentration positions. For most people, and especially in the thin-skinned eye area (which is not prone to traditional comedonal acne), pore-clogging is not a practical concern with this formula.
The Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months. Given the 15 mL size and the typical usage of one pea-size amount per application (approximately 0.1–0.2 mL), a single tube provides approximately 75–150 applications — roughly 1.5 to 5 months of daily use (AM + PM). Using it twice daily will exhaust the tube in approximately 6–8 weeks. Users who apply it once daily or "as needed" may extend the tube to 3–4 months. Discard if the product changes color, develops an off-odor, or the texture becomes noticeably different before the 12-month mark.
Verdict: The ZO Skin Health Growth Factor Eye Serum is among the most technologically advanced physician-grade eye serums available. Its combination of plant-derived growth factor technology, a clinically effective neuropeptide (SYN®-AKE), advanced sodium acetylated hyaluronate, and a cooling applicator wand addresses the full spectrum of periorbital aging — expression lines, crow's feet, under-eye hollowness, puffiness, and loss of hydration — in a single, eyelid-safe formula. The lightweight, fragrance-free silicone-gel base makes it one of the rare eye products that genuinely works for all skin types, including oily and combination. The primary drawbacks are its premium price point ($140 for only 15 mL), physician-only distribution, and unsuitability for fungal-acne-prone users. For those committed to a results-driven, medical-grade skincare regimen — particularly in their 40s and beyond — this is a top-tier investment that clinical evidence and consistent user reviews support.

Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
