Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35
Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35
Product Description
Product overview
Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35 is a clean, lightweight mineral sunscreen powered by 15.2% non-nano zinc oxide. Formulated without silicones, fragrances, or chemical UV filters, it delivers three-way protection against UV rays, environmental pollution, and blue light — all in a featherlight cream that blends to a natural, skin-like finish with a subtle peachy tint to minimize white cast on light-to-medium skin tones.
Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Protection
Non-nano zinc oxide (15.2%) provides physical broad-spectrum UVA + UVB protection by reflecting UV rays at skin's surface — never absorbed into the bloodstream.
Texture & feel
SENSORYBroad Spectrum SPF 35 Protection
Non-nano zinc oxide (15.2%) provides physical broad-spectrum UVA + UVB protection by reflecting UV rays at skin's surface — never absorbed into the bloodstream.
3-Way Environmental Defense
Moringa seed extract and sea fennel (Crithmum Maritimum) provide antioxidant protection against UV, environmental pollution, and blue/HEV light from screens and the sun.
Built-In Moisture Barrier
Sodium hyaluronate, glycerin, and a blend of fatty alcohols hydrate skin throughout the day, so you can skip a separate moisturizer in your morning routine.
Peachy Tint — Minimal White Cast
Iron oxides lend a subtle peachy hue that counteracts zinc oxide's natural white tint, allowing the formula to blend invisibly on light-to-medium skin tones.
Clean & Sustainable Formula
EWG Verified, reef-safe, cruelty-free, and vegan. Packaged in a tube made with 79% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic — kind to skin and the planet.
Silicone-Free Elegance
Achieved a smooth, primer-like slip using diheptyl succinate and capryloyl glycerin/sebacic acid copolymer — plant-derived silicone alternatives with excellent skin feel.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains only zinc oxide as its UV filter — widely regarded by dermatologists and the FDA as the safest sunscreen active for use during pregnancy and nursing. Free from retinoids, chemical UV filters, and hydroquinone.
Most ingredients are FA-safe. However, some fatty alcohols (cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol) and caprylic/capric triglyceride can potentially feed Malassezia. Those with confirmed fungal acne should patch test carefully.
The formula is designed to be non-pore-clogging. Key emollients like isodecyl neopentanoate and jojoba esters have low comedogenic ratings. The absence of silicones, mineral oil, and petrolatum further supports a clean pore profile.
Fragrance-free, dye-free, and free of common irritants. Bisabolol (from chamomile) provides added anti-inflammatory support. EWG Verified with a low hazard score. Patch testing is always recommended for very reactive skin.
Contains no oxybenzone, octinoxate, or octocrylene — UV filters identified as harmful to coral reefs. Compliant with sunscreen regulations in Hawaii, Key West, U.S. Virgin Islands, Palau, and Aruba.
The peachy iron oxide tint is formulated to cancel white cast on light-to-medium skin tones. Users with deeper complexions may experience a visible peachy or ashy cast; a swatch test before full use is strongly recommended.
As a last step in the AM routine, Guards Up is fully compatible with retinol (used PM only), vitamin C, AHA/BHA, and niacinamide. It actually enhances their efficacy by protecting skin from UV-induced photodegradation.
Ethyl ferulate functions as an antioxidant UV-booster and can absorb some UV light. While not approved as a standalone sunscreen active, it acts as a supplementary filter. This product is marketed and regulated as mineral SPF.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSZinc Oxide 15.2%Active / Proven
The sole FDA-approved broad-spectrum UV active in this formula. Non-nano zinc oxide sits on the skin's surface and physically scatters and reflects UVA I, UVA II, and UVB rays. At 15.2%, it delivers robust, reliable protection without penetrating the bloodstream — making it uniquely safe for pregnant and breastfeeding individuals.
- UV Coverage: Broad-spectrum UVA (320–400 nm) + UVB (290–320 nm) protection in a single ingredient.
- Non-Nano: Particle size >100 nm — does not penetrate the skin barrier and poses no systemic absorption risk.
- Reef Safety: Non-nano zinc oxide is considered environmentally preferable and is allowed under all major reef-safe sunscreen regulations worldwide.
- FDA Status: Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) by the FDA for OTC sunscreen use.
Diheptyl Succinate + Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer ~3–5%Silicone Alternative / Proven
This ingredient duo serves as a plant-derived, biodegradable alternative to silicones (like dimethicone). Diheptyl succinate is a natural emollient from succinic acid, while capryloyl glycerin/sebacic acid copolymer is a biopolymer that creates a smooth, silky skin feel. Together they give Guards Up its signature slip and spreadability without synthetic silicones.
- Function: Film-former, emollient, sensory modifier — creates a smooth base for zinc oxide dispersion and reduces the "drag" of mineral particles.
- Eco Profile: Both are biodegradable and considered environmentally safe compared to silicone-based alternatives.
- Skin Feel: Contributes to the non-greasy, comfortable wear that makes this sunscreen distinctive among mineral SPFs.
Glycerin + Sodium Hyaluronate ~2–4%Humectant / Proven
Two of skincare's most researched and effective humectants. Glycerin draws water from deeper skin layers and the environment into the stratum corneum, providing immediate and sustained hydration. Sodium hyaluronate — the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid — can hold up to 1,000× its weight in water, plumping skin and supporting the moisture barrier throughout the day.
- Sodium Hyaluronate vs. HA: Smaller molecular weight allows better skin surface penetration compared to full hyaluronic acid polymer chains.
- Clinical Backing: Glycerin is one of the most studied skin-identical humectants; shown to improve skin hydration, barrier function, and elasticity in multiple peer-reviewed trials.
- Synergy: Together, these two humectants allow Guards Up to function as both SPF and daily moisturizer, streamlining the AM routine.
Crithmum Maritimum Extract (Sea Fennel) ~0.5–1%Antioxidant / Promising
Sea fennel is a coastal plant rich in polyphenols, flavonoids, and essential fatty acids. Used in clean beauty formulas for its antioxidant activity against environmental stressors including UV-induced free radicals and blue/HEV light damage. Versed highlights this as a key ingredient in their three-way environmental protection claim.
- Blue Light Defense: Polyphenol-rich botanicals like sea fennel are studied for their ability to neutralize reactive oxygen species generated by HEV light exposure from digital screens and sunlight.
- Anti-Pollution: Phenolic compounds help quench free radicals from airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone.
- Skin Brightening: Early research suggests mild depigmentation benefits via inhibition of melanogenesis.
Moringa Oleifera Seed Extract ~0.5–1%Antioxidant / Promising
Moringa seed extract is rich in oleic acid, behenic acid, and isothiocyanates — compounds with documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, it has been adopted in modern clean beauty formulations for its ability to scavenge environmental pollutants and support skin barrier health.
- Anti-Pollution: Moringa's isothiocyanates are studied for their ability to bind and neutralize heavy metals and airborne pollutants on the skin surface.
- Antioxidant: High vitamin E content (tocopherol) in moringa supports free radical neutralization, complementing the standalone tocopherol in this formula.
Bisabolol ~0.2–0.5%Anti-Inflammatory / Proven
Alpha-bisabolol, derived from chamomile (or synthesized), is a gold-standard soothing agent in dermatology. It reduces redness, calms irritation, and enhances the penetration of other beneficial ingredients. Its presence in Guards Up makes this sunscreen particularly suitable for post-procedure skin and those with reactive or rosacea-prone complexions.
- Mechanism: Inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes involved in the inflammatory pathway, reducing prostaglandin-mediated skin redness.
- Penetration Enhancer: At low concentrations, bisabolol has been shown to improve the skin delivery of co-formulated active ingredients.
- Safety Profile: Extensively tested; considered non-irritating and non-sensitizing at typical use concentrations (0.1–0.5%).
Ethyl Ferulate ~0.5–1%Antioxidant / UV-Booster
Ethyl ferulate is a ferulic acid ester — an antioxidant derived from rice bran oil. In sunscreen formulations, it serves a dual role: it neutralizes UV-generated free radicals and may provide supplementary UV absorption. While not approved as a standalone sunscreen active in the US, it effectively boosts the overall photoprotective efficacy of mineral SPF formulas.
- SPF Booster: A 2014 study found that 10% ethyl ferulate demonstrated comparable SPF to some benzimidazole UV filters.
- Antioxidant Synergy: Works synergistically with tocopherol (vitamin E) to neutralize reactive oxygen species generated during UV exposure.
- Stability: More photostable than free ferulic acid, making it a superior choice for UV-exposed formulations.
Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract ~0.5%Antioxidant / Promising
Apple fruit extract is rich in polyphenols, particularly quercetin and chlorogenic acid, which exhibit antioxidant and mild exfoliating properties. It supports skin brightness and provides a subtle natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids that can help maintain skin texture over time.
- Polyphenol Content: Contains quercetin and chlorogenic acid — potent free radical scavengers that protect against UV-induced oxidative stress.
- Brightening Support: Mild inhibition of tyrosinase activity may contribute to gradual brightening effects with consistent use.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) ~0.5%Antioxidant / Proven
Pure vitamin E (tocopherol, not tocopheryl acetate) is one of the most researched fat-soluble antioxidants in skincare. It protects cell membranes from UV-induced lipid peroxidation, supports skin barrier repair, and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties. Its presence alongside ethyl ferulate and sea fennel creates a layered antioxidant defense system.
- Photoprotection: Reduces UV-induced erythema and lipid peroxidation; synergistically enhanced by ferulic acid derivatives.
- Barrier Repair: Supports ceramide synthesis and maintains stratum corneum integrity.

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply Guards Up as thefinal step of your AM skincare routine, after all serums and moisturizers have absorbed. Wait 1–2 minutes before applying makeup to prevent pilling. Reapply every 2 hours during prolonged sun exposure.
How to use
HOW TO USEComplete Your Skincare Routine First
Apply all serums, treatments, and moisturizers. Allow them to fully absorb before proceeding. Applying sunscreen over wet or tacky products can cause pilling.
Dispense a Generous Amount
Squeeze out approximately a nickel- to quarter-sized amount (about 1/4 teaspoon) for the face and neck. Most people under-apply sunscreen, which significantly reduces SPF efficacy — studies show underapplication can cut protection by 50–80%.
Dot and Press — Don't Rub Aggressively
Dot the product across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Press and blend gently using fingertips or a damp beauty sponge. Pressing (rather than rubbing) prevents white cast disruption and pilling under makeup.
Blend Down the Neck and Décolletage
Extend application to the neck and upper chest — often-neglected areas prone to UV damage and premature aging. Don't forget the backs of your hands.
Wait Before Makeup
Allow 1–2 minutes for the formula to set before applying foundation, powder, or other makeup. This prevents balling and ensures even SPF coverage is maintained.
Reapply Every 2 Hours Outdoors
For extended outdoor activity, reapply every 2 hours (or after swimming/sweating). Use SPF-setting powders or sprays over makeup for convenient reapplication without disrupting your look.

Frequently asked questions
FAQYes — Guards Up is widely considered one of the safest sunscreen options during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It uses only zinc oxide (15.2%) as its UV active, which is FDA-recognized as safe and effective and does not penetrate the skin barrier in its non-nano form. The formula is free from chemical UV filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, avobenzone, etc.), retinoids, hydroquinone, salicylic acid, and other commonly restricted pregnancy ingredients. Always consult your OB or midwife before starting any new product during pregnancy.
This is nuanced. The majority of Guard Up's ingredients are fungal acne (FA) safe. However, the formula contains several fatty alcohols — cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol — which are known Malassezia feed sources and are flagged as potentially problematic for FA. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is also sometimes listed as a concern. If you have mild FA or have not had a confirmed flare on fatty alcohol-containing products, you may tolerate it fine. If you have active or confirmed Malassezia folliculitis, patch test carefully or consider a formula without fatty alcohols. Not all fatty-alcohol-containing products trigger FA in all individuals.
Absolutely — in fact, Guards Up was designed to be the ideal AM protective finish over a treatment-forward routine. Apply vitamin C serum first, let it absorb, then apply Guards Up as the last step. Retinol should be reserved for your PM routine only (retinol and UV exposure are a counterproductive combination, and retinol also sensitizes skin to sun damage — making daily SPF use even more important). AHAs and BHAs used at night make sun protection the next morning critical, as they increase photosensitivity. Guards Up's broad-spectrum coverage ensures your active ingredient investments are protected from UV-induced degradation.
Guards Up is highly versatile and works well for most skin types — particularly normal, dry, combination, sensitive, and acne-prone skin. Its lightweight texture and natural/satin finish make it comfortable for daily wear across these types. Dry skin will benefit most from its built-in humectants (glycerin, sodium hyaluronate), while sensitive skin appreciates the fragrance-free, clean formulation. Oily skin can use it but may want to set with a mattifying powder. The one significant limitation is for deeper skin tones — the peachy iron oxide tint is calibrated for light-to-medium complexions and may leave an unwanted cast on medium-deep to dark skin tones.
SPF protection is immediate — from the moment of application. You don't need to wait 15–30 minutes with mineral sunscreens (unlike chemical filters which require time to bind to the skin). For visible improvements in skin tone, dark spots, and photoaging, expect to see measurable results within 4–12 weeks of consistent daily use, particularly if combined with vitamin C (AM) and retinol (PM). Broad-spectrum SPF is the single most evidence-backed anti-aging skincare step. The antioxidant complex (sea fennel, moringa, tocopherol) provides cumulative environmental protection benefits that compound over months of regular use.
Guards Up is always the last step in your morning (AM) skincare routine, applied after cleansing, toning, serum, eye cream, and moisturizer. Apply it immediately before makeup (allow 1–2 minutes to set). Never layer additional skincare products on top of your sunscreen, as this can dilute SPF efficacy. At night, skip sunscreen and use your PM treatments (retinol, heavier moisturizers, sleeping masks) instead. The only exception is reapplication — throughout the day, reapply Guards Up every 2 hours of direct sun exposure regardless of what's on top.
Guards Up has a comedogenic rating of approximately 1/5 — considered very low and non-pore-clogging for the vast majority of users. The formula was specifically designed to be non-comedogenic: it's free of silicones, mineral oil, petroleum derivatives, and heavy occlusive ingredients commonly associated with clogged pores. Key emollients like isodecyl neopentanoate and hydrolyzed jojoba esters have low comedogenic profiles. Zinc oxide itself has mild antimicrobial properties. Thousands of acne-prone users have reported zero breakouts on this formula. As with any product, individual responses vary — a patch test on the chin/jaw area over 1–2 weeks is a reliable way to assess your personal skin's response.
Guards Up has a PAO (Period After Opening) of 12 months — meaning use it within 1 year of first opening. Check the back of the tube for the open-jar symbol with the number inside. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme heat. At recommended generous application amounts (approximately 1/4 teaspoon per full face-and-neck application), a 50 ml tube provides approximately 30–40 applications — roughly 1–1.5 months of daily use if applied correctly. Many users underapply sunscreen and get 2–3 months from one tube, but underapplication significantly reduces effective SPF.
Verdict: Versed Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen SPF 35 is a genuinely impressive achievement in clean, mineral SPF formulation. By replacing silicones with plant-derived alternatives (diheptyl succinate, capryloyl glycerin/sebacic acid copolymer) and incorporating a layered antioxidant defense against UV, pollution, and blue light, Versed has created one of the most wearable mineral sunscreens available at its accessible $22 price point. It earns EWG Verification, pregnancy safety, and cruelty-free status without sacrificing cosmetic elegance. The primary limitations — a peachy tint that doesn't universally flatter deeper skin tones, SPF 35 rather than the dermatologist-recommended 50+, and a lack of water resistance — are real but manageable for the core audience: clean-beauty enthusiasts with light-to-medium skin tones seeking a daily AM SPF for indoor/commuting life. For its target user, it's close to ideal.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
