Kakadu Plum Brightening

Terminalia Ferdinandiana Fruit Extract — one of the world's highest natural sources of vitamin C — helps even skin tone, reduce dullness, and protect against environmental stressors overnight.

Barrier-Repairing Lipid Complex

A specialized blend of phospholipids and sphingolipids mirrors the skin's own natural lipid profile to repair, reinforce, and seal the moisture barrier while you sleep.

Multi-Level Hydration System

Glycerin and hyaluronic acid draw moisture deep into the skin, while squalane, caprylic/capric triglycerides, and cetearyl alcohol lock it in — delivering plump, bouncy skin by morning.

Honey + Tremella Mushroom

Honey provides humectant, antioxidant, and antibacterial benefits, while Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract holds up to 500x its weight in water for sustained overnight hydration.

Nighttime Optimized Formula

Skin is more permeable at night, making it better primed to absorb active ingredients. This sleeping cream is engineered to capitalize on that window for maximum overnight skin renewal.

pH-Balanced & Skin-Compatible

Formulated at pH 6.5–7.5, aligning with skin's natural pH to ensure ingredients perform at optimal potency without disrupting the acid mantle or causing irritation.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe

Contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical UV filters. All key actives (squalane, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, kakadu plum) are considered safe during pregnancy. Always consult your OB-GYN.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) — Use with Caution

Contains Polysorbate 20, which may feed Malassezia yeast and trigger fungal acne in sensitive individuals. The squalane source (sugarcane vs. olive) is unspecified. Those with confirmed FA may want to patch test carefully.

Low Comedogenic Risk (Rating: 1/5)

The primary emollients — squalane (0), caprylic/capric triglyceride (1), and propanediol (0) — score very low on the comedogenic scale. Cetearyl alcohol rates at 2 but is generally non-comedogenic at typical use levels.

Sensitive Skin Compatible

Completely fragrance-free and free of harsh alcohols, essential oils, and parabens. Dermatologist tested and rated 91% Top Allergen Free by SkinSafe. Patch test still recommended for very reactive skin.

Safe with Retinol & Vitamin C

The neutral pH (6.5–7.5) makes this cream compatible with most actives. Apply actives first, then seal with this cream as the final step. Avoid layering directly over high-dose AHA/BHA acids on the same night.

Acne-Prone Skin — Likely Safe

Non-comedogenic formula with no known pore-clogging oils. However, the rich texture may feel too heavy for very oily acne-prone skin. Best used 2–3 times per week rather than nightly if skin is prone to congestion.

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Glycerin Top 5%Proven

One of skincare's most extensively researched humectants. Naturally present in skin, glycerin draws water from the environment and from deeper skin layers into the stratum corneum, keeping skin supple and plumped throughout the night.

  • Mechanism: Humectant — attracts and binds water molecules in the epidermis.
  • Clinical evidence: Shown to significantly improve skin hydration and barrier function at concentrations of 3–20%.
  • Benefit: Softens rough texture, reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and enhances skin suppleness.
Universally tolerated across all skin types. One of the safest cosmetic ingredients available.

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride Top 10%Proven

A lightweight, fast-absorbing emollient derived from coconut oil and glycerin. Acts as an occlusive to slow moisture loss from the skin surface while also providing skin-softening benefits without a greasy residue.

  • Mechanism: Occlusive emollient — forms a breathable film on the skin surface to reduce TEWL.
  • Comedogenic rating: 1/5 — very low risk of pore clogging.
  • Benefit: Improves skin texture and feel; enhances the spreadability of the formula.
Well tolerated by most skin types including sensitive and acne-prone skin.

Squalane Mid-RangeProven

A stabilized, plant-derived form of squalene — a lipid naturally produced by human sebaceous glands. Squalane is an exceptional emollient that mimics skin's own oils for effortless absorption, improved suppleness, and antioxidant protection.

  • Mechanism: Emollient + antioxidant — replenishes natural skin lipids and helps neutralize free radicals.
  • Research: Non-irritating even at 100% concentration; shown to be superior to many mineral oils in skin compatibility.
  • Benefit: Boosts skin elasticity, reduces roughness, and imparts a lightweight, non-greasy dewiness.
Fungal acne note: Olive-derived squalane may contain fatty acid impurities that can feed Malassezia. Sugarcane squalane is preferred for FA-prone skin. Naturium does not specify the source.

Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract Lower RangePromising

Derived from the snow mushroom, this natural polysaccharide can hold up to 500 times its weight in water — outperforming standard hyaluronic acid in moisture retention. Long used in traditional Chinese medicine for skin health, it is now a prized modern skincare ingredient.

  • Mechanism: Super humectant — forms a moisture-binding film on the skin surface.
  • Advantage over HA: Smaller molecular structure allows deeper penetration and longer-lasting hydration.
  • Benefit: Plumps fine lines, improves elasticity, and imparts a dewy, glass-skin effect.
Suitable for sensitive skin; non-irritating and biocompatible with human skin biology.

Hyaluronic Acid Lower RangeProven

A naturally occurring polysaccharide found in skin and connective tissue. Hyaluronic acid is capable of holding up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it one of the most powerful humectants in modern skincare.

  • Mechanism: Humectant — draws and retains water within skin layers.
  • Clinical data: Shown to significantly increase skin hydration, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and improve skin elasticity with regular use.
  • Benefit: Plumps, smooths, and visibly diminishes dehydration lines overnight.
Safe for all skin types including pregnancy. Universally tolerated with no reported irritation potential.

Terminalia Ferdinandiana Fruit Extract (Kakadu Plum) Lower RangeProven

Kakadu plum is a native Australian superfruit with the highest recorded concentration of natural vitamin C of any plant on earth — up to 100 times more than oranges. It provides potent antioxidant, brightening, and skin-protective benefits.

  • Key actives: Natural vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), ellagic acid, gallic acid — all potent antioxidants.
  • Mechanism: Antioxidant + mild brightening — neutralizes free radicals and helps inhibit melanin production.
  • Benefit: Evens skin tone, enhances radiance, and protects against oxidative damage overnight.
Natural vitamin C from whole fruit extract is more stable and gentler than synthetic ascorbic acid; suitable for sensitive skin.

Phospholipids & Sphingolipids Lower RangeProven

These bioidentical epidermal lipids are the primary structural components of healthy skin cell membranes. They work synergistically to restore, repair, and reinforce the skin's moisture barrier — the foundation of long-term skin health.

  • Phospholipids: Humectant + emollient + antioxidant; improve skin penetration of other actives.
  • Sphingolipids: Precursors to ceramides; essential for maintaining barrier integrity and preventing moisture loss.
  • Benefit: Repairs barrier damage, reduces sensitivity, and delivers sustained overnight hydration.
Bioidentical to skin's own lipids — exceptionally well tolerated, even by compromised or sensitized skin.

Honey Lower RangeProven

One of humanity's oldest skincare ingredients, with documented use going back over 4,500 years. Honey is a complex mixture of sugars, enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals that delivers humectant, antioxidant, antibacterial, and wound-healing properties.

  • Humectant: Its high sugar content attracts and binds moisture to the skin surface.
  • Antimicrobial: Natural hydrogen peroxide production and low pH give honey broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.
  • Benefit: Softens, soothes, and provides gentle antimicrobial protection while supporting overnight skin repair.
Naturally derived and generally well tolerated. Note: not suitable for those with bee product allergies.

Betaine Mid-RangeProven

A naturally derived amino acid compound (from sugar beets) that functions as a potent humectant, skin-soothing agent, and osmoprotectant — helping cells maintain optimal hydration balance under environmental stress.

  • Mechanism: Humectant + anti-irritant — attracts water and neutralizes the irritation potential of other ingredients.
  • Benefit: Improves product spreadability, reduces skin tightness, and enhances overall formula mildness.
Highly compatible with sensitive skin; often used specifically to reduce irritation in formulas containing actives.

Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Lower RangePromising

A synthetic polymer used as a texture enhancer and soft-focus agent. PMMA microspheres scatter light to create a smoothing, blurring effect on the skin surface, giving it a soft-matte, airbrushed appearance while improving product slip and feel.

  • Function: Texture agent + optical diffuser — adds silky slip and visual skin-smoothing effect.
  • Benefit: Contributes to the product's cushiony, balm-like texture without adding heaviness.
Inert, non-reactive polymer; considered safe for cosmetic use across all skin types.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Cleanse Thoroughly

Begin with a gentle cleanser to remove SPF, makeup, and daily impurities. Double cleansing is recommended if you wear sunscreen or makeup.

2

Apply Toner & Actives

Apply your hydrating toner, essence, or targeted serums (vitamin C, niacinamide, retinol, etc.) first and allow each to absorb fully before proceeding.

3

Dispense a Generous Amount

Scoop out approximately a pea-to-hazelnut-sized amount (about 1–2 pumps) using a clean spatula or fingertip. A little goes a long way with this rich formula.

4

Press & Pat into Skin

Warm between palms, then press and gently pat into face and neck. Avoid rubbing harshly — patting encourages absorption without pilling or disrupting previous layers.

5

Leave On Overnight

Do not rinse. Allow the cream to work its magic while you sleep. In the morning, cleanse your face as normal. Use SPF during the day, every day.

06

Who is it for?

WHO

Perfect for you if:

  • You have dry, dehydrated, or combination-dry skin that needs intense overnight moisture
  • You want a brightening sleeping cream that evens skin tone with Kakadu plum

  • You have very oily skin that doesn't tolerate rich, balm-textured creams at night
  • You need anti-aging actives like retinol or peptides in your night cream
  • You have a known bee product (honey) allergy
  • You prefer gel or water-based lightweight textures
07

Skin type compatibility

SKIN TYPES

Excellent

Provides a hydration boost and brightening benefits without overwhelming normal skin. Ideal as a once or twice weekly treatment for maintaining healthy, glowing skin.

Oily / Acne-Prone
Moderate

Non-comedogenic, but the rich balm texture may feel heavy on very oily skin. Use sparingly 1–2x per week as a hydration treatment on dry patches only. Not ideal as a nightly all-over cream.

Mature / Aging Skin
Good

Delivers excellent plumping and barrier-reinforcing benefits for mature skin. However, those wanting dedicated anti-aging actives (retinol, peptides) should pair this with a targeted serum underneath.

Both are overnight sleeping masks with serious hydration pedigrees. Laneige uses a gel-balm texture with hyaluronic acid and their Agua-Bounce Complex. Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes — this sleeping cream is considered pregnancy and breastfeeding safe. It contains no retinoids (retinol, retinyl palmitate), salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical UV filters, or synthetic fragrance, which are the key ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. All primary actives — squalane, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, Kakadu plum extract, phospholipids, and sphingolipids — are generally recognized as safe during pregnancy. However, every pregnancy is different. Always consult your OB-GYN or midwife before adding new products to your routine during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Use with caution if you have fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis). The formula contains Polysorbate 20, which is derived from lauric acid and is commonly flagged as potentially feeding Malassezia yeast. Additionally, the source of squalane (olive-derived vs. sugarcane-derived) is not specified by Naturium, and olive-derived squalane can contain fatty acid impurities that may trigger fungal acne. If you are prone to fungal acne, patch test carefully or consider an alternative formula that is verified FA-safe.

Yes, this cream pairs well with most active ingredients because it is pH-neutral (6.5–7.5) and fragrance-free. The recommended layering order is: apply your actives (vitamin C serum, retinol, AHA/BHA treatments) first, allow them to absorb fully (5–10 minutes), then apply this cream as the final occlusive seal. Using this cream over retinol can actually help reduce potential irritation by creating a moisture buffer. On nights when you use a potent AHA or BHA peel, it is best to wait until the skin's pH has normalized before applying a rich cream, or simply use this cream on alternate nights.

This cream is best suited for dry, normal, and sensitive skin types that crave intensive overnight hydration and barrier repair. It is also excellent for combination-dry skin when applied 2–3 nights per week and focused on drier zones. Those with very oily or acne-prone skin may find the rich, balm-like texture too heavy as a nightly all-over treatment — though it can still be used strategically on dry patches. It is particularly well suited to anyone with a compromised or reactive skin barrier thanks to its bioidentical phospholipid and sphingolipid complex.

Many users report waking up with noticeably softer, plumper, and dewier skin after the very first use. For more meaningful results — improved skin tone evenness, reduced dehydration lines, and a more radiant complexion — expect to see visible changes within 3–4 weeks of consistent use 2–3 nights per week. Barrier repair and long-term resilience improvements from the phospholipid/sphingolipid complex typically become fully apparent after 6–8 weeks of regular use.

This is always the final step in your evening skincare routine — applied after cleansing, toning, serums, spot treatments, and eye cream. Because it functions as an occlusive seal that locks in everything applied before it, you should apply it last so it captures and holds all the moisture and actives beneath it. Do not apply a regular moisturizer before this cream; use it in place of your nighttime moisturizer. In the morning, cleanse your face as normal and follow with your daytime routine and SPF.

This product has a very low comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5. The key emollients — squalane (0), caprylic/capric triglyceride (1), and propanediol (0) — all score extremely low on the comedogenic scale. Cetearyl alcohol rates at 2 but is widely considered non-pore-clogging at cosmetic use levels. There are no heavy mineral oils, petrolatum, coconut oil, or other high-comedogenic ingredients in the formula. Most users, including those with acne-prone skin, can use this product without experiencing pore clogging, though patch testing is always advisable for those with particularly reactive or congestion-prone skin.

The Period After Opening (PAO) for this product is 12 months — look for the open jar symbol on your packaging. The 1.7 oz (50g) jar used 2–3 times per week, applying a hazelnut-sized amount each use, will typically last 3–5 months before running out — well within the 12-month PAO window. For maximum longevity and hygiene, always use a clean spatula rather than fingers to scoop product from the jar, and keep the lid tightly closed between uses. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat to preserve ingredient potency.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.3 / 5 ★★★★☆

Verdict: The Naturium Intense Overnight Sleeping Cream punches well above its $24.99 price tag. It delivers a sophisticated, science-backed formula — combining bioidentical phospholipids and sphingolipids, plant squalane, Kakadu plum extract, and hyaluronic acid — that you'd typically only find in creams costing three to five times more. The fragrance-free, vegan, dermatologist-tested formula is a standout for dry, sensitive, and barrier-compromised skin types that need serious overnight hydration and recovery. The cushiony balm texture, dewy morning result, and visible brightening over time make it a genuinely impressive value. Minor drawbacks — tub packaging, a Polysorbate 20 flag for fungal acne sufferers, and a texture that may be too rich for very oily skin — keep it from a perfect score. For anyone seeking an accessible, clean-formulated sleeping cream that delivers real results, Naturium's offering is one of the best on the market at this price point.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
