Pore-Blurring Silicone Base
A dimethicone-led vehicle system creates a silky primer-like texture that visibly blurs pores, fills fine lines, and creates a flawless soft-focus canvas — no separate primer needed.
Wild Butterfly Ginger (Hedychium Coronarium)
This exotic botanical extract helps shield skin from blue light and HEV radiation, offering next-level protection beyond UV alone — ideal for screen-heavy lifestyles.
Bamboo Ferment Antioxidant Complex
Lactobacillus/Arundinaria Gigantea Leaf Ferment Filtrate delivers potent antioxidant protection against free radical damage, helping reduce visible signs of environmental aging.
Lightweight Hydration with Glycerin
Glycerin, a skin-identical humectant, draws moisture into the skin to maintain suppleness and comfort throughout the day without adding greasiness or shine.
Iron Oxide Tinting — Minimized White Cast
A blend of CI 77491, CI 77492, and CI 77499 iron oxides gives Mattescreen its signature light beige tint, neutralizing the chalky white cast common to high-mineral-load sunscreens.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEUses only mineral UV filters (Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide). Free of chemical sunscreens like oxybenzone, octinoxate, retinoids, salicylic acid, and hydroquinone. Considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always consult your OB/GYN for personalized advice.
Contains ingredients that may feed Malassezia yeast, including Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (C8–C10 fatty acid ester), Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Stearic Acid, and Polyhydroxystearic Acid. Not recommended for active fungal acne breakouts. If you have Malassezia folliculitis, consult a dermatologist before use.
Mineral-only UV filters are among the most tolerated by sensitive skin. Free of synthetic fragrance, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and mineral oil. Dermatologist tested and recommended even for sensitive skin types by Supergoop!.
Contains no oxybenzone or octinoxate — the two chemical UV filters most associated with coral reef damage. The mineral-only formulation is considered environmentally safer for use near ocean and reef environments.
Oil-free formula built on a silicone (dimethicone) base rather than traditional oils. Silicones do not clog pores. The brand explicitly states this product is free of pore-clogging oils. Suitable for acne-prone skin.
Free of avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and other chemical UV filters. This means no risk of hormonal disruption associated with chemical sunscreen actives — a major benefit for health-conscious users.
As the final AM skincare step, Mattescreen pairs seamlessly with retinol serums (used at night), vitamin C serums, AHAs, and BHAs in your morning routine. Wearing broad-spectrum SPF is essential when using exfoliating actives — this product fulfills that requirement.
The current Sunrise shade is formulated for light-to-medium skin tones. Users with very deep or dark complexions may notice the tint appearing ashy or mismatched. An untinted version is also available if shade is a concern.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSZinc Oxide 17.42%Proven
The primary active sunscreen ingredient in Mattescreen. Zinc oxide is the broadest-spectrum mineral UV filter approved by the FDA, providing protection across UVB, UVA II, and UVA I wavelengths. At 17.42%, this is a high-efficacy concentration that delivers substantial sun protection. Zinc oxide is also naturally soothing, photostable, and non-irritating — ideal for sensitive and acne-prone skin.
- UV Range: UVB + UVA I + UVA II — widest coverage of any single UV filter
- Photostability: Highly photostable — does not degrade under UV exposure
- Skin Benefits: Anti-inflammatory and soothing; used in dermatological treatments for rosacea and irritation
- Safety: FDA Category I (Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective) mineral UV filter
Titanium Dioxide 1.33%Proven
The secondary mineral UV filter, providing broad-spectrum UVB and UVA II protection. At 1.33%, Titanium Dioxide here plays a supporting role alongside the dominant Zinc Oxide. It contributes to the overall SPF score while helping improve the formula's texture and spreadability when used in micronized form.
- UV Range: Strong UVB and UVAII protection; moderate UVAI
- Function: UV absorption (~95%) with minimal reflection — a common misconception debunked by modern photochemistry research
- Cosmetic Note: A key contributor to Mattescreen's slight white-cast-reducing beige tint when combined with iron oxides
Dimethicone High (Base Ingredient)Proven
The primary silicone in Mattescreen and the backbone of its primer-like texture. Dimethicone is a versatile, non-comedogenic silicone polymer that creates a smooth, slip-enhancing film on skin. It temporarily fills in fine lines, pores, and uneven texture, creating the signature soft-focus finish. It also acts as an occlusive to reduce transepidermal water loss.
- Texture Role: Creates the whipped, airy cream feel and the velvet matte finish after application
- Skin Feel: Silky, non-greasy, and non-irritating. Will not clog pores (non-comedogenic)
- Barrier Function: Light occlusive that helps maintain skin hydration without heaviness
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride MediumProven
A lightweight emollient ester derived from coconut oil, composed of C8 (caprylic) and C10 (capric) fatty acid chains. It absorbs quickly, leaves a dry silky finish, and serves as a skin-conditioning agent in the formula. Often used in mineral sunscreens as part of the oil phase to improve spreadability and reduce the white cast of mineral filters.
- Skin Feel: Fast-absorbing, non-greasy, dry-touch finish
- Emollient Role: Softens and conditions skin; improves the spreadability of Zinc Oxide particles
Glycerin MediumProven
One of the most well-researched and universally beneficial humectants in skincare. Glycerin is a skin-identical molecule that draws moisture from the atmosphere into the upper layers of the skin, maintaining optimal hydration and skin barrier function. Its presence in Mattescreen ensures the formula doesn't feel dry or tight despite the matte finish.
- Humectant Power: Binds up to several times its weight in water; clinically proven to increase skin hydration
- Barrier Support: Strengthens the skin's lipid barrier and reduces transepidermal water loss
- Safety: Universally tolerated across all skin types including sensitive, acne-prone, and rosacea-prone
Hedychium Coronarium Root Extract (Wild Butterfly Ginger) Low-MediumPromising
Wild Butterfly Ginger root extract is a featured botanical in Mattescreen. Supergoop! highlights it for its ability to help filter and protect skin from blue light (High Energy Visible / HEV radiation) emitted by screens and indoor lighting — a growing area of concern in modern skin aging research. It also possesses antioxidant properties that help neutralize free radicals.
- Blue Light Protection: Emerging research supports certain plant polyphenols as HEV light absorbers; Hedychium coronarium is rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds
- Antioxidant Activity: Botanical antioxidants complement mineral UV protection by scavenging UV-generated free radicals
Lactobacillus/Arundinaria Gigantea Leaf Ferment Filtrate (Bamboo Ferment) LowPromising
A fermented bamboo extract produced via Lactobacillus bacteria fermentation. Fermentation increases the bioavailability and skin-penetrating power of active compounds from bamboo. This ingredient is referenced by Supergoop! for its antioxidant properties, helping combat free radical damage from UV and environmental stressors.
- Fermentation Benefit: Lactobacillus fermentation breaks down complex molecules into smaller, more skin-absorbable components
- Antioxidant Role: Bamboo is rich in silica and phenolic compounds with documented antioxidant activity
Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate LowPromising
A fermented radish root filtrate produced by Leuconostoc bacteria. Widely used in clean beauty as a natural antimicrobial preservative alternative. It functions as both a skin-conditioning agent and a mild preservative system, helping to maintain product stability while being gentler than synthetic preservatives like parabens or phenoxyethanol.
- Preservation: Provides antimicrobial activity to extend product shelf life without harsh synthetic preservatives
- Skin Conditioning: Fermented filtrates support skin microbiome health
Silica MediumProven
A naturally occurring mineral and the secret weapon behind Mattescreen's oil control and matte finish. Silica particles have a highly porous structure that absorbs excess sebum and sweat throughout the day, keeping skin looking fresh, matte, and non-greasy. Spherical silica also acts as a soft-focus agent, scattering light to visually blur pores and surface imperfections.
- Oil Control: Excellent sebum-absorbing capacity — a key component behind the all-day matte finish
- Soft Focus: Light-scattering properties blur pores and reduce the look of uneven texture
- Safety: Non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and widely used across all skin types
Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499) Low-MediumProven
A blend of red (CI 77491), yellow (CI 77492), and black/brown (CI 77499) iron oxides that provides Mattescreen's universal tint. Beyond cosmetic color correction, iron oxides have demonstrated the ability to absorb visible light wavelengths, potentially adding another layer of protection against blue light and HEV radiation — a benefit that untinted sunscreens lack.
- White Cast Correction: The warm beige tint neutralizes the ashy white cast typical of high-Zinc Oxide formulas
- Visible Light Defense: Emerging research shows iron oxides filter HEV (400–500nm) wavelengths that contribute to pigmentation and photoaging
- Safety: Synthetically produced iron oxides are free of heavy metal impurities; classified as safe colorants globally

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply as thelast step in your AM skincare routine, 15 minutes before sun exposure. Use before makeup — it doubles as a primer. Reapply at least every 2 hours with prolonged outdoor exposure. For PM routine, swap with a retinol or restorative night treatment.
How to use
HOW TO USEComplete Your AM Skincare Routine
Apply your cleanser, toner, serums (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide), and moisturizer first. Let each layer absorb before proceeding. Mattescreen is always the final skincare step.
Dispense & Dot Onto Face
Squeeze a nickel-sized amount (approximately 1/4 teaspoon for face) from the tube. Dot it across forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin for even distribution before blending.
Blend Generously & Evenly
Use fingertips or a makeup sponge to blend outward in gentle strokes. Extend to the neck and ears. Apply generously — under-application reduces SPF efficacy. The whipped texture spreads effortlessly.
Wait 15 Minutes Before Sun Exposure
Mineral sunscreens are effective immediately upon application, but applying 15 minutes before going outside ensures the formula has fully settled and bonded to skin for optimal performance.
Apply Makeup on Top (Optional)
Mattescreen's silicone base acts as a makeup primer — foundation, blush, and setting powder apply smoothly on top. The matte finish helps makeup last longer throughout the day.
Reapply Every 2 Hours
For continuous sun protection, reapply at least every 2 hours when outdoors, or after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. Supergoop!'s (Re)setting 100% Mineral Powder SPF 35 works well for touch-ups over makeup.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESPurpose-built for oily skin. The silicone base and silica absorb excess sebum, control shine, and maintain a matte finish for hours. This is one of the best mineral sunscreens available specifically for oily types.
Balances well across face zones — mattifies the T-zone without over-drying cheeks. The glycerin provides enough hydration to keep drier areas comfortable while silica controls shine where needed.
A versatile daily SPF that works seamlessly for normal skin. The clean formula, comfortable matte finish, and primer-doubling function make it an ideal everyday product for maintaining healthy skin long-term.
Mineral-only UV filters are the gentlest option for reactive skin. Free of synthetic fragrance, parabens, and irritating actives. Officially recommended by Supergoop! for sensitive skin. Patch test recommended for very reactive complexions.
The matte finish and silicone base may feel drying on very dry skin types. Glycerin offers some hydration, but dry skin users may prefer layering a richer moisturizer underneath or opting for Supergoop!'s Glowscreen instead.
Oil-free, non-comedogenic, and formulated without pore-clogging oils. The zinc oxide base offers mild anti-inflammatory benefits for breakout-prone skin. Note: not suitable for active fungal acne due to fatty acid esters in the formula.

DUPESA dermatologist-favorite mineral/hybrid SPF with niacinamide for acne-prone and sensitive skin. Lightweight, sheer, and matte-finishing. The main difference: it contains chemical sunscreen (Octinoxate) in addition to Zinc Oxide, making it not fully mineral, but its finish and skin feel are very comparable to Mattescreen.
French pharmacy mineral SPF with Titanium Dioxide, lightly tinted, and formulated for sensitive skin. Higher SPF 50 protection but a thicker, less primer-like texture. No pore-blurring silicone base — more of a traditional mineral sunscreen feel. Good for those who want a higher SPF without the primer benefit.
A wallet-friendly tinted mineral sunscreen with ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. More hydrating than mattifying — better suited for normal-to-dry skin. Lower SPF 30 and no pore-blurring silicone primer base. Excellent value for sensitive skin users who don't need oil control but want a clean mineral option at a lower price point.

Frequently asked questions
FAQYes — Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It uses only Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide as UV filters, which are mineral (physical) sunscreens that sit on top of the skin and are not absorbed systemically. It contains no oxybenzone, octinoxate, retinoids (retinol, retinyl palmitate), salicylic acid, or hydroquinone — the ingredients most commonly flagged by obstetricians. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice during pregnancy and nursing.
No — Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 is NOT considered fungal acne safe. The formula contains several ingredients that may feed Malassezia yeast, including Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (C8–C10 fatty acid ester), Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Stearic Acid (a C18 fatty acid), and Polyhydroxystearic Acid. Additionally, the Lactobacillus ferment filtrate may also be problematic for some users with Malassezia folliculitis. If you have confirmed fungal acne, look for alternatives formulated with silicone and mineral bases that are free of fatty acids and esters. Consult a dermatologist for a tailored recommendation.
Yes — Mineral Mattescreen is fully compatible with all of these actives when used correctly. Apply your active ingredients (vitamin C serum, niacinamide, AHAs, BHAs) as earlier steps in your AM or PM routine. Mattescreen should always be the final step in your morning routine. Wearing broad-spectrum SPF daily is essential when using exfoliating acids or vitamin C, which can increase photosensitivity. Retinol is a PM-only ingredient — simply use Mattescreen in the morning as your SPF step and retinol at night. There are no direct interactions or incompatibilities between Mattescreen's ingredients and these common actives.
Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 was specifically designed for normal, combination, and oily skin types — and is officially recommended by Supergoop! for these skin types as well as sensitive skin. Its silicone-silica base controls shine, blurs pores, and creates a matte finish that oily and combination skin users love. Sensitive skin types benefit from the mineral-only UV filters, which are gentler than chemical sunscreens. Those with dry skin may find it slightly drying and would likely prefer a more hydrating SPF formula.
For cosmetic benefits (pore blurring, matte finish, smooth skin appearance), results are immediate — you'll notice them upon first application. For sun protection, the mineral filters are effective immediately, though applying 15 minutes before sun exposure ensures optimal coverage. For cumulative anti-aging benefits — reduced fine lines, improved skin evenness, prevention of new sun spots — consistent daily use over 3–6 months shows measurable results in clinical studies. Sunscreen is the most effective anti-aging ingredient available; the results compound over years of consistent use.
Mineral Mattescreen is the final step in your morning skincare routine, applied after cleanser, toner, serums (vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide), eye cream, and moisturizer. It goes on last because sunscreen should form the outermost protective layer on your skin. Apply it before makeup — it doubles as a primer. Wait 15 minutes after application before sun exposure. At night, skip Mattescreen entirely and use your PM treatments such as retinol, peptides, and richer moisturizers instead.
Mineral Mattescreen has a low comedogenic rating of approximately 1 out of 5. It is oil-free and uses a silicone (dimethicone) base, which is non-comedogenic and does not clog pores. Supergoop! explicitly states this product is free of pore-clogging oils. The zinc oxide base also has mild anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit acne-prone skin. The primary concern for acne-prone users is not comedogenicity but rather fungal acne (Malassezia), for which this product is not recommended (see fungal acne FAQ above).
Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 has a Period After Opening (PAO) of 12 months, indicated by the open jar symbol on the packaging. For reference, a reviewer who purchased in September 2024 reported an expiration date of March 2027, suggesting an approximately 2.5-year shelf life when unopened. Discard if the product separates, changes color, develops an unusual smell, or if its texture becomes noticeably different. Store in a cool, dry location away from direct heat and sunlight to maximize shelf life.
Verdict: Supergoop! Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 PA+++ is one of the most cosmetically elegant 100% mineral sunscreens on the market. It succeeds where most mineral SPFs fail — delivering high-concentration Zinc Oxide protection (17.42%) in a genuinely lightweight, primer-like formula that blurs pores, controls oil, and minimizes white cast. The addition of Wild Butterfly Ginger for blue light defense and bamboo ferment antioxidants elevates it beyond a simple sunscreen. The formula is pregnancy-safe, reef-safe, fragrance-free, and endorsed by dermatologists for sensitive skin. The main limitations are its single-tint restriction (works best for light-to-medium complexions), its incompatibility with fungal acne, and its premium price point for a product requiring daily reapplication. For oily, combination, normal, and sensitive skin types that want a clean mineral sunscreen doubling as a makeup-gripping primer, this is a standout choice.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
