Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreen agents. The formula is 100% fragrance-free and relies on well-tolerated humectants, peptides, and plant extracts considered safe during pregnancy. Always consult your healthcare provider.
Contains Alteromonas Ferment Extract (a ferment), Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil (rated 4/5 comedogenic but used at trace amounts), and Dextrin Palmitate (a fatty acid ester). Those with active fungal acne near the eye area should patch-test first or consult a dermatologist.
The base is predominantly water and glycerin. While coconut oil appears in the list, it is positioned mid-to-lower in the formula indicating a low concentration. The product is officially rated non-acnegenic by Clinique's dermatologist testing.
Ophthalmologist tested and specifically rated safe for contact lens wearers. The fragrance-free, preservative-light formula minimises risk of eye irritation.
Free of fragrance, parabens, phthalates, and common allergens. Allergy-tested under dermatological supervision. The gentle humectant and peptide base rarely causes irritation.
Safe to use alongside retinoids and exfoliating acids in a routine. Apply this concentrate first (thinner texture) and allow it to absorb before layering heavier treatments. Monitor for sensitivity if using strong retinoids nightly near the eye area.
Already contains Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (a stable, oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative), making it compatible with additional Vitamin C serums. No risk of interaction.
No parabens, phthalates, benzophenones, or PFAS compounds. Clean formulation with no controversial preservatives such as methylisothiazolinone.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSGlycerin ~5–8%Proven
The cornerstone humectant of this formula. Glycerin draws water from the environment and deeper skin layers to the surface, providing immediate and sustained hydration to the thin, delicate periorbital skin.
- Function: Humectant, skin-conditioning agent, osmolyte
- Evidence: Extensively studied; shown to match skin's natural moisturising factors (NMFs) in function
- Benefit: Plumps fine lines caused by dehydration within minutes of application
Hydroxyethyl Urea ~2–4%Proven
A high-performance derivative of urea that delivers superior moisturisation without the potential irritation of standard urea. Clinically shown to improve skin elasticity and provide a non-sticky, lubricous feel that is ideal for the eye area.
- Function: Humectant, keratolytic (mild), skin conditioner
- Evidence: Manufacturer data shows comparable moisturisation to glycerin at 5%, with a better sensory profile
- Benefit: Improves elasticity and reduces the appearance of dehydration lines
Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green Tea) ~1–2%Proven
One of the most extensively researched botanical antioxidants in skincare. Rich in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the dominant catechin responsible for potent anti-inflammatory, UV-protective, and anti-aging activity in the periorbital zone.
- Function: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, photoprotective, soothing
- Evidence: EGCG shown to inhibit matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin
- Benefit: Protects delicate eye-area collagen from oxidative damage and environmental aggressors
Caffeine ~0.5–1%Proven
A well-documented vasoconstrictor and antioxidant that temporarily reduces puffiness and dark circles by constricting blood vessels and improving microcirculation in the periorbital area. Also inhibits phosphodiesterase, triggering lipolysis of fat cells under the eye.
- Function: Vasoconstrictor, antioxidant, lipolytic agent
- Evidence: Multiple clinical studies show reduction in puffiness and improvements in dark circle appearance
- Benefit: Instantly de-puffs and brightens the under-eye zone; visible results within minutes
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) ~2–4%Proven
A multi-functional powerhouse active. In the eye area, niacinamide brightens dark circles by inhibiting melanosome transfer, strengthens the epidermal barrier by stimulating ceramide synthesis, and reduces visible redness and sallowness.
- Function: Skin brightener, barrier strengthener, anti-inflammatory, cell-communicating ingredient
- Evidence: Proven to fade hyperpigmentation at 4–5%; increases ceramide synthesis and improves barrier function
- Benefit: Brightens dark circles, strengthens the thin periorbital skin barrier, and reduces puffiness-related redness
Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid Salt) ~0.1–0.5%Proven
The sodium salt of hyaluronic acid—more stable and better-penetrating than free hyaluronic acid. Binds up to 1,000× its weight in water, providing immediate plumping at the surface while the smaller sodium hyaluronate molecules penetrate deeper to hydrate from within.
- Function: Humectant, film-forming agent, dermal filler analogue
- Evidence: Gold-standard hydration ingredient with decades of clinical use and safety data
- Benefit: Immediately plumps creases and fine lines around the eye; holds 96-hour hydration layer in place
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline) ~0.5–1%Promising
A hexapeptide that mimics the action of SNAP-25 proteins involved in neurotransmitter release. By interfering with the SNARE complex, it may temporarily reduce the depth of expression lines around the eyes, particularly crow's feet.
- Function: Neuropeptide-like, anti-wrinkle, cell-communicating ingredient
- Evidence: In-vitro and some in-vivo studies show reduction in expression-related wrinkle depth; topical penetration is limited
- Benefit: Softens dynamic fine lines with consistent use; works best as a preventative and maintenance ingredient
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (Vitamin C Ester) ~0.1–0.5%Proven
A highly stable, oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative that penetrates the lipid-rich skin barrier more efficiently than L-ascorbic acid. Brightens the under-eye area, inhibits melanin synthesis, and provides antioxidant protection against UV-induced free radical damage.
- Function: Antioxidant, skin brightener, collagen synthesis stimulator
- Evidence: Superior stability compared to L-ascorbic acid; converts to active ascorbic acid post-penetration
- Benefit: Contributes to dark circle reduction and photoprotection; does not cause oxidation-related irritation
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water + Leaf Extract ~1–3% combinedProven
Dual aloe forms deliver soothing, humectant, and anti-inflammatory benefits. The leaf water provides immediate cooling hydration while the concentrated extract (pure aloe butter component) contributes to the lipid sphere technology that rebuilds the skin's moisture barrier.
- Function: Humectant, soothing, anti-inflammatory, wound-healing support
- Evidence: Polysaccharides and acemannan in aloe are well-studied for skin barrier support and soothing
- Benefit: Central to the "Auto-Replenishing Lipid-Sphere Technology" claimed on pack; rebuilds lipid barrier to lock in hydration
Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract (Cucumber) ~0.1–0.5%Promising
A classic eye-care botanical rich in flavonoids and tannins with mild astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditionally associated with reducing puffiness and dark circles around the eyes, supported by its cooling and vasoconstricting effects.
- Function: Soothing, anti-inflammatory, mild astringent, antioxidant
- Evidence: Contains cucurbitacins and flavonoids with antioxidant activity; in-vitro anti-inflammatory data available
- Benefit: Complements caffeine in soothing puffiness and providing a refreshing, cooling sensation
Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12 ~0.1–0.5%Promising
A palmitic acid-conjugated hexapeptide that penetrates the lipid-rich environment of the skin more effectively. Stimulates collagen, elastin, and fibronectin synthesis in the dermis, potentially improving firmness and elasticity of the delicate periorbital skin over time.
- Function: Collagen-stimulating peptide, firming, anti-aging
- Evidence: In-vitro studies show upregulation of collagen type I and fibronectin; clinical data limited but supportive
- Benefit: Long-term improvement in eye-area firmness and reduction of deep static wrinkles with consistent use
Trehalose + Sorbitol ~1–2% combinedProven
Two polyol humectants that supplement glycerin's moisture-binding action. Trehalose is a natural stress-protectant sugar that stabilises proteins and cell membranes under dehydrating conditions; sorbitol reinforces the multi-humectant system for sustained softness.

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply after serums and before moisturiser. The lighter water-gel texture should always go beneath heavier creams. Can be used AM and PM. For a 3-minute eye mask treatment, apply generously and rinse or press off excess.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse & Prep
Begin with a freshly cleansed face. Pat skin dry gently, leaving slight moisture on the skin if desired — this helps humectants bind water more effectively around the eye area.
Dispense the Perfect Amount
Press the airless pump once to dispense a pea-sized amount for both eyes. A little goes a long way — using too much may cause pilling under makeup or milia if the skin around the eye is unable to absorb excess product.
Apply with the Ring Finger
Using your ring finger (which applies the least pressure), gently dot and pat the concentrate all around the orbital bone — under the eye, on the lid, and extending to crow's feet. Never tug or rub the delicate periorbital skin.
Allow to Absorb
Wait approximately 30 seconds for the lightweight gel to fully absorb before applying your next skincare step. The formula sinks in quickly without leaving a heavy residue.
Optional: 3-Minute Eye Mask
For an intensive hydration boost, apply a slightly more generous layer and leave on for 3 minutes. Gently press in remaining product or use a damp cotton pad to remove excess. Use 2–3 times per week for enhanced results.
Who is it for?
WHOPerfect for you if:
- Your primary eye-area concern is dehydration and fine, dry lines
- You have normal, combination, oily, or mildly dry skin types
- You prefer a fragrance-free formula with a lightweight, non-greasy texture

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESThe ultra-lightweight water-gel formula absorbs instantly without adding any shine or greasiness to the periorbital area. Non-acnegenic and officially rated by Clinique for all skin types.
Provides excellent hydration through its multi-humectant system. Very dry skin types may want to layer a richer eye cream on top at night for maximum occlusion and barrier repair.
The water-gel base is ideal for combination skin — hydrating enough for drier zones without overloading areas that tend to congestion. Works morning and evening without disrupting makeup.
Fragrance-free, allergy-tested, and dermatologist-approved. Free of known sensitisers. Gentle soothing ingredients including aloe, green tea, and cucumber minimise irritation risk on reactive skin.
Officially non-acnegenic and has a low comedogenic rating. However, those prone to fungal acne should note the presence of Alteromonas Ferment Extract and patch-test before committing to daily use.
The dual-peptide and Vitamin C derivative system provides meaningful anti-aging support. For deep static wrinkles, consider pairing with a retinol eye cream at night to accelerate results.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESShares the same water-gel texture and lightweight feel. Key humectant is hyaluronic acid rather than the multi-humectant blend. Lacks the peptide and Vitamin C derivative complex, but delivers comparable immediate plumping at roughly half the price. Fragrance-free. Widely available.
Focuses on ceramide-based barrier repair with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. A thicker cream texture compared to the water-gel, making it better for dry skin types. Lacks caffeine and peptides. Strong drugstore alternative prioritising barrier function over plumping performance.
Targets de-puffing and dark circles with caffeine as the hero ingredient — matching one of Clinique's key actives. Lighter on the peptide and antioxidant side. Significantly cheaper and fragrance-free. Best for users whose primary concern is puffiness rather than multi-action hydration.

SIDE-BY-SIDEStorage & shelf life
12 MONTHS12 months after opening. The airless pump packaging helps extend shelf life by limiting air and contaminant exposure compared to jar packaging.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid storing in a steamy bathroom where temperature fluctuations could degrade the lipid spheres and encapsulated actives.
Airless pump bottle (15 ml). The pump mechanism preserves formula integrity and dispenses a controlled, hygienic dose. The visible lipid spheres (coloured micro-capsules) may not appear with every pump — this is normal.
Yes — at 15 ml / 0.5 fl oz the product is well within the TSA 100 ml carry-on liquid limit. The airless pump also prevents accidental leakage during travel.
Frequently asked questions
FAQYes, this product is considered safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The formula contains no retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreen filters, or other ingredients commonly advised against during pregnancy. It is 100% fragrance-free, paraben-free, and phthalate-free. The key actives — glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, caffeine, plant extracts, and peptides — are all generally considered safe during pregnancy at cosmetic concentrations. As always, we recommend consulting your OB-GYN or midwife before adding any new skincare product during pregnancy.
Use with caution if you are prone to fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis / malassezia folliculitis). The formula contains Alteromonas Ferment Extract, which is a ferment — a category that can potentially feed malassezia yeast. It also contains Dextrin Palmitate (a fatty acid ester) and trace amounts of Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, which are also flagged as potentially problematic for fungal acne-prone individuals. That said, fungal acne predominantly occurs on the back, chest, and forehead rather than the periorbital area. If you have a history of fungal acne near the eye area, we recommend patch-testing and consulting a dermatologist before use.
Yes, this concentrate is compatible with all major actives. Apply it in the correct order (thinner to thicker — this concentrate before heavier creams), and it will work harmoniously with your retinol, Vitamin C, AHA, or BHA products. The formula already contains a stable Vitamin C derivative (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate), so combining with additional topical Vitamin C is safe and may enhance brightening results. When using a strong retinol eye cream, apply the retinol product first (if using a separate formula), wait for it to absorb, then layer this concentrate over or underneath depending on texture. Always introduce new actives gradually and monitor for sensitivity.
Clinique officially formulates this for all skin types, and the ultra-lightweight water-gel texture makes it particularly excellent for normal, combination, and oily skin types who need effective eye hydration without heaviness. Sensitive skin types benefit greatly from the fragrance-free, allergy-tested formulation. Dry skin types will also find it hydrating, though those with very dry or mature skin requiring rich emollient treatment may prefer to pair it with a heavier eye cream at night. Contact lens wearers of any skin type can use this confidently — it is ophthalmologist-tested and specifically rated safe for lens wearers.
Hydration and de-puffing benefits are visible immediately — caffeine and the multi-humectant complex begin working within minutes of application. You will notice plumper, more supple skin around the eye area after your very first use. Brightening benefits from niacinamide and the Vitamin C derivative typically become noticeable after 2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. The dual-peptide anti-aging benefits (softening expression lines, improving firmness) are cumulative and most noticeable after 8–12 weeks of regular use. For best results, apply morning and evening as part of a consistent routine.
Apply this concentrate as step 4 in your routine — after cleansing, toning/essence, and any face serums, but before your main moisturiser. The lightweight water-gel texture means it should always sit beneath heavier creams or oils. In the AM: cleanser → toner → serum → this eye concentrate → moisturiser → sunscreen. In the PM: cleanser → toner → serum → this eye concentrate → eye cream (if using a richer formula) → night moisturiser. It can also be used as a 3-minute express eye mask before the rest of your routine 2–3 times per week.
No — this product is officially non-acnegenic as confirmed by Clinique's dermatologist testing. The comedogenic rating is approximately 1 out of 5 (very low). The primary base is water and glycerin, which are non-comedogenic. Coconut oil appears in the formula but is positioned mid-to-lower on the ingredient list, indicating a low concentration that is unlikely to cause pore congestion. The lightweight water-gel formula absorbs fully and does not leave a pore-blocking residue. It is appropriate for acne-prone and oily skin types.
The product has a 12-month Period After Opening (PAO), indicated by the open-jar symbol on the packaging. With daily use of one pump per application (morning and evening), a 15 ml bottle will typically last approximately 2–3 months, depending on how much product you dispense per use. Clinique recommends using only a pea-sized amount per application to cover both eyes. The airless pump packaging helps extend the product's shelf life by minimising air exposure and contamination, supporting the full 12-month PAO window.
Verdict: Clinique Moisture Surge Eye 96-Hour Hydro-Filler Concentrate earns its place as a standout in the prestige eye treatment category. Its intelligent multi-humectant system — anchored by glycerin, hydroxyethyl urea, sodium hyaluronate, trehalose, and sorbitol — delivers genuinely impressive and sustained hydration that plumps fine lines and refreshes the eye area immediately and continuously. The 96-hour claim is backed by a thoughtful lipid-sphere delivery mechanism, not just marketing copy. The dual-peptide complex and encapsulated antioxidants (green tea, Vitamin E, stable Vitamin C derivative) add meaningful long-term anti-aging value beyond pure hydration. The 100% fragrance-free, paraben-free formulation makes it accessible to sensitive skin, pregnant women, and contact lens wearers — a genuinely versatile clean formula. The only meaningful drawbacks are the small 15 ml volume for the price, limited suitability for very dry skin as a standalone nighttime product, and cautious fungal acne compatibility. For those seeking a dermatologist-tested, ophthalmologist-safe, and scientifically formulated eye hydrator with proven actives and immediate results, this is one of the most thoughtfully built options on the market.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
