SENSORY24-Hour MicroMoisture Technology
Millions of micro-moisture droplets absorb deep into the skin's surface layers, actively regenerating moisture for all-day hydration that lasts well beyond the shower.
Real Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter
Authentic shea butter sourced from African Karite trees is packed with fatty acids and antioxidants (vitamins A, E, F) that replenish and protect the skin barrier.
Microbiome-Gentle Cleansing
The sulfate-free formula with gentle amino acid-based surfactants (Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate) cleanses without disrupting the skin's living protective microbiome layer.
Plant-Based Moisturizers
Naturally derived cleansers alongside glycerin and skin-natural fatty acids (caprylic, capric, palmitic acids) work together to nourish and balance the skin barrier gently.
Eco-Conscious Formula & Packaging
98% biodegradable formula (OECD test methods 301/302/310) packaged in a 100% recycled plastic bottle with ergonomic design to help you use every last drop.
Indulgent Vanilla & Shea Fragrance
A warm, comforting scent blend of creamy shea butter, vanilla accord, and fresh pineapple top notes creates a spa-like experience that delicately lingers on skin post-shower.
Safety & compatibility
SAFENo retinoids, salicylic acid, or hydroquinone present. However, the formula contains Parfum (fragrance) with identified allergens (Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool) and Benzyl Alcohol. Fragrance components may be a consideration during pregnancy. Consult your healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
NOT considered fungal acne safe. The formula contains Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter and Stearic Acid — both fatty acids that can feed Malassezia yeast. Additionally, Lauric Acid and other fatty acids are present. Those with fungal acne or Malassezia folliculitis should exercise caution and consider alternatives.
Completely free of parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben) and sulfates (SLS, SLES). Uses gentler amino acid-derived surfactants instead, making it suitable for sensitive or reactive skin types.
Generally low comedogenic risk. Glycerin (rating 0) and gentle surfactants dominate. Shea butter rates 0–2 depending on processing. Lauric acid and some fatty acids can theoretically clog pores but are rinsed off during use, significantly reducing comedogenic risk in a wash-off product.
PETA-approved vegan certification. Dove does not test on animals anywhere in the world. Free of lanolin and animal-derived ingredients.
Contains declared fragrance allergens: Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, and Benzyl Alcohol. Individuals with fragrance sensitivities should patch test first or opt for Dove's Sensitive Skin fragrance-free variant.
Formulated to be pH balanced, helping maintain the skin's natural slightly acidic mantle (pH 4.5–5.5) which is essential for healthy microbiome and barrier function. Citric acid and sodium hydroxide are used to adjust pH.
Dove is the #1 dermatologist-recommended body wash brand. The formula uses gentle cleansers validated to be effective yet non-stripping, making it appropriate for daily use on all skin types including normal, dry, and combination.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSWater (Aqua) ~60–70%Base
The primary ingredient and solvent that forms the foundation of the formula. High-purity water dissolves and delivers all other active ingredients, supporting the emulsion system and determining product texture.
- Function: Universal solvent, emulsion base, delivery vehicle for active ingredients
- Safety: Completely inert and safe for all skin types
Sodium Lauroyl Glycinate ~3–7%Proven
A gentle amino acid-derived surfactant made from glycine and lauric acid. It delivers an ultra-mild cleansing action while creating a pleasant, creamy lather — one of the gentlest surfactants available, frequently used in formulas for sensitive and reactive skin.
- Source: Coconut-derived (lauric acid) + glycine (amino acid)
- Function: Primary gentle cleanser, lather booster, skin conditioner
- Evidence: Studies show amino acid surfactants preserve skin barrier integrity better than traditional sulfates
Cocamidopropyl Betaine ~2–5%Proven
A zwitterionic amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil. Exceptionally popular in body wash and shampoo formulations for its ability to stabilize foam, enhance lather, and work synergistically with other surfactants to reduce irritation potential. Highly biodegradable.
- Source: Coconut oil derived
- Function: Secondary surfactant, foam stabilizer, viscosity builder, skin conditioner
- Evidence: 2012 study confirmed high-purity CAPB does not induce allergic reactions; previous concerns traced to synthesis byproducts, not the ingredient itself
Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate ~2–5%Proven
An anionic surfactant with superior skin-feel properties. Known for imparting a creamy, silky texture to the skin post-wash. Gentler than SLS and significantly less drying. Common in premium body washes and synthetic "soap-free" cleansing bars.
- Source: Coconut oil + isethionic acid
- Function: Cleanser, skin conditioner, texture enhancer
- Skin feel: Leaves a distinctively smooth, non-stripped post-wash feel
Glycerin ~1–3%Proven
One of the most well-studied humectants in cosmetic science. Glycerin draws moisture from the environment into the skin, helping maintain hydration levels within the stratum corneum. It also has emollient and skin-protective properties, reinforcing the skin barrier.
- Function: Humectant, emollient, skin conditioner, penetration enhancer
- Evidence: Clinically proven to improve skin hydration and barrier function at concentrations as low as 1–3%
- Comedogenic: Rating 0 — non-comedogenic
Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter ~0.5–2%Proven
The hero ingredient and star of this formula. Authentic shea butter extracted from the seeds of African Karite trees (Vitellaria paradoxa). Rich in oleic acid (~40–60%), stearic acid (~20–50%), linoleic acid (~3–11%), and triterpene alcohols with potent anti-inflammatory activity. A powerful emollient, humectant, and antioxidant.
- Source: Seeds of the African Shea (Karite) tree
- Key actives: Vitamins A, E, F; triterpene alcohols (lupeol, amyrin); phytosterols; quercetin; EGCG
- Evidence: Studies show shea butter's triterpene content provides measurable anti-inflammatory benefits and accelerates wound healing
- SPF note: Natural SPF ~3–4 (not a sunscreen substitute)
Lauric Acid ~1–3%Proven
A 12-carbon saturated fatty acid naturally found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and breast milk. Functions as both a cleansing agent and skin conditioner. Has documented antimicrobial properties — studies suggest it may help combat acne-causing bacteria like C. acnes.
- Source: Coconut oil, palm kernel oil (natural)
- Function: Cleansing agent, skin conditioner, lather enhancer
- Evidence: Research shows lauric acid exhibits antimicrobial activity against P. acnes at low concentrations
Capryloyl Glycine + Undecylenoyl Glycine ~0.5–1%Promising
Two innovative amino acid-derived active ingredients. Capryloyl Glycine (glycine + caprylic acid) is a multifunctional ingredient with surfactant, skin-softening, and emerging sebum-regulating properties. Undecylenoyl Glycine (glycine + undecylenic acid) is derived from castor oil and has antifungal and antimicrobial activity — a functional preservative booster.
- Capryloyl Glycine function: Gentle cleanser, sebum regulator, potential hair growth inhibitor (emerging research)
- Undecylenoyl Glycine function: Antimicrobial, preservative booster, skin conditioner
- Evidence: Manufacturer data indicates both ingredients help regulate sebum and inhibit odor-causing bacteria
Stearic Acid + Palmitic Acid + Hydroxystearic Acid ~1–3% combinedProven
A trio of saturated fatty acids that perform multiple roles in the formula. They function as co-emulsifiers, texture builders (giving the body wash its rich, creamy consistency), and skin-conditioning agents. Stearic acid is naturally found in shea butter and cocoa butter; palmitic acid is abundant in palm oil and human sebum.
- Function: Emulsifier, texture/viscosity builder, skin conditioner, emollient
- Stearic acid: Naturally found in skin's own sebum; helps restore barrier lipids
- Palmitic acid: Identical to a fatty acid naturally produced by human skin
Sodium Benzoate + Tetrasodium EDTA ~0.1–0.5%Proven
A two-component preservation and stability system. Sodium Benzoate (introduced circa 1950, used up to 1% globally) is a well-established preservative effective against bacteria and fungi, found naturally in cranberries and cinnamon. Tetrasodium EDTA is a chelating agent that neutralizes metal ions from water to prevent formula degradation and enhances preservative efficacy.
- Sodium Benzoate: Safe at concentrations under 1%; approved globally; non-comedogenic; non-paraben
- Tetrasodium EDTA: Chelator that prevents oxidation and microbial growth; effective against yeasts and molds
Citric Acid ~0.1–0.5%Proven
An alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from citrus fruits. In this formula, it is used primarily as a pH adjuster to balance the formula to skin-friendly pH levels, ensuring the surfactant system performs optimally without causing irritation.
- Source: Citrus fruits (commercial version is fermentation-derived)
- Function: pH adjuster, mild antioxidant, chelating agent
- At low concentrations: No significant exfoliating activity; purely functional

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply to wet skin in circular motions. Focus on dry areas like elbows, knees, and shins. Rinse completely and follow with a body moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
How to use
HOW TO USEWet Your Skin
Step into the shower and thoroughly wet your entire body with warm (not hot) water. Hot water can strip natural oils, so warm water helps preserve moisture.
Apply the Body Wash
Squeeze a generous amount of Dove Pampering Shea Butter & Vanilla Body Wash into your palms or onto a shower pouf/loofah. A small amount goes a long way — the formula lathers up beautifully with minimal product.
Lather & Massage
Work into a rich, creamy lather and massage over your body in gentle circular motions. Pay extra attention to dry areas such as elbows, knees, heels, and shins. Take a moment to breathe in the warm vanilla and shea butter fragrance.
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse off completely with warm water, ensuring no residue remains. The formula is designed to rinse clean without leaving a heavy film, revealing soft, smooth skin instantly.
Pat Dry & Moisturize
Gently pat your skin dry with a soft towel (do not rub). Apply a body lotion or body butter immediately while skin is still slightly damp to seal in the MicroMoisture benefits and maximize all-day hydration.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESThis body wash was practically made for dry skin. The 24-Hour MicroMoisture technology, shea butter, glycerin, and fatty acids work together to replenish moisture and restore barrier function. Many users report not needing lotion after use.
The gentle sulfate-free formula cleanses effectively without over-stripping. Normal skin will appreciate the luxurious lather and soft post-wash feel without any heaviness or residue.
Works well for combination skin. The formula hydrates drier areas (legs, arms) while gentle surfactants prevent over-moisturizing oilier zones. Rinse thoroughly to avoid any buildup on the chest/back.
The sulfate-free, paraben-free formula with amino acid surfactants is generally well-tolerated by sensitive skin. However, the fragrance (including Coumarin, Linalool) may cause reactions in very reactive skin — patch test first.
May feel slightly rich for very oily skin types. The creamy formula and shea butter content can feel heavy if skin is already producing excess sebum. Oily skin types may prefer a lighter, gel-based body wash.
Not recommended for fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) due to shea butter, stearic acid, and other fatty acids. For body acne prone to fungal triggers, choose a sulfur or pyrithione zinc-based body wash instead.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESVery similar creamy, moisturizing body wash format with comparable glycerin and emollient content. Slightly less sophisticated surfactant system than Dove, but delivers comparable post-wash softness and has a gentle vanilla-like fragrance profile. Great everyday dupe at lower price point.
Dermatologist-recommended like Dove, with a focus on colloidal oat instead of shea butter for moisturization. Fragrance-free version available — better choice for fragrance-sensitive skin. Less luxurious lather and no vanilla scent, but superior for very sensitive and eczema-prone skin.
Uses cocoa butter instead of shea butter as the star ingredient, delivering similar deep moisturizing benefits with a warm, chocolate-adjacent scent. Good for very dry skin with a rich emollient profile. Slightly heavier feel on skin post-rinse. Widely available at drugstores.

Storage & shelf life
12 MONTHS12 months after opening. Look for the open-jar PAO symbol on the bottle. The sodium benzoate and tetrasodium EDTA preservative system maintains product integrity for this duration under normal use conditions.
Store at room temperature (15–25°C / 59–77°F) in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid leaving in a very hot car or near heating vents, which can alter the fragrance and formula stability.
Available in ergonomic squeeze bottles (16.9 oz, 20 oz, 22 oz) and a large pump dispenser (30.6 oz). The bottle is made from 100% recycled plastic and is fully recyclable after use. Pump version is ideal for family/high-use settings.
Standard bottles (400–650 ml) exceed the 100 ml airline liquid limit — not suitable for carry-on luggage. Transfer to a travel-size silicone bottle or purchase Dove's travel-size format (available in select markets) for air travel compliance.
Frequently asked questions
FAQThis body wash does not contain retinoids, salicylic acid, or hydroquinone — the ingredients most commonly flagged as unsafe during pregnancy. However, it does contain Parfum (fragrance blend) with disclosed allergens including Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, and Benzyl Alcohol. While these are used at very low concentrations in a rinse-off product (further reducing exposure), some pregnant women and healthcare providers prefer to minimize fragrance exposure during pregnancy as a precaution. We recommend consulting your OB/GYN or midwife before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, particularly if you have any known fragrance sensitivities. If you want a completely fragrance-free alternative during pregnancy, consider Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash.
No, this body wash is not considered fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis) safe. It contains several fatty acids including Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Stearic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Hydroxystearic Acid, Lauric Acid, Caprylic Acid, and Capric Acid — all of which can potentially feed Malassezia yeast and trigger or worsen fungal acne breakouts on the back, chest, or shoulders. While the rinse-off nature of a body wash does reduce (but not eliminate) the exposure compared to leave-on products, those with active Malassezia folliculitis should choose a body wash specifically formulated to be fungal acne safe. Look for options containing zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, or ketoconazole, or use INCI-verified fungal-acne-safe body washes.
Yes, as a rinse-off body wash this product is compatible with all active ingredient regimens including retinol, vitamin C serums, AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid), and BHAs (salicylic acid) applied to the body. Because the body wash is fully rinsed off before any other products are applied, there is no direct interaction concern. However, if you are using potent exfoliating actives (like an AHA/BHA body lotion) on areas with particularly sensitized skin, using a gentle wash like this Dove formula (rather than a harsher sulfate-based cleanser) will minimize further irritation and help maintain a healthier skin barrier. Do not mix actives directly with your body wash in the shower.
This body wash is best suited for dry, very dry, and normal skin types. It excels at addressing dry skin concerns thanks to its 24-Hour MicroMoisture technology, shea butter, glycerin, and skin-natural fatty acids that work together to restore and maintain the skin's moisture barrier. It also performs well for combination skin (body). Those with sensitive skin can generally use it, though the fragrance allergens present mean a patch test is advisable first. Oily skin types may find the creamy formula slightly too rich. This body wash is not recommended for those with acne-prone skin specifically affected by fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis).
Most users notice softer, smoother skin from the very first shower. The gentle surfactant system prevents the tight, stripped feeling associated with traditional soaps, and the immediate emollient effect of shea butter and glycerin is perceptible right after rinsing. Noticeable reduction in dry patches and improved skin texture typically becomes apparent within 3–7 days of daily use. After 2–4 weeks of consistent use, users with dry skin often report significantly improved overall skin hydration and a healthier-looking, more resilient skin surface. For best results, follow with a body moisturizer applied to slightly damp skin.
This body wash is the cleansing step of your body care routine. Use it after wetting your skin in the shower (Step 2 after initial rinse). After rinsing off the body wash thoroughly, pat your skin dry and follow with your body moisturizer, body oil, or body butter while skin is still slightly damp — this is the optimal window to lock in hydration. In the morning, finish with SPF if wearing skin-exposing clothing. There is no need to use toner, essence, or other multi-step products on body skin the way you might on your face. Keep the routine simple: cleanse with this body wash → moisturize → sunscreen (AM).
This body wash has a low comedogenic rating of approximately 2 out of 5. While it does contain some fatty acids and shea butter (which can be moderately comedogenic in leave-on products), the key distinction is that this is a rinse-off product. The formula is thoroughly washed away during your shower, meaning the vast majority of potentially pore-clogging ingredients do not remain on the skin long enough to cause blockages. Glycerin (rating 0) and the amino acid surfactants are non-comedogenic. For most people — including those with mildly acne-prone skin — this body wash will not cause breakouts. However, those with severely acne-prone or keratosis pilaris-prone skin may want to rinse extra thoroughly, particularly on the chest and back.
The Period After Opening (PAO) for this body wash is 12 months — meaning you should use it within 12 months of first opening the bottle. Look for the open jar symbol on the packaging with "12M" indicated. The sodium benzoate and tetrasodium EDTA preservative system keeps the formula stable and safe during this period under normal storage conditions (room temperature, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat). In practical terms, a 20 oz bottle used daily by one person typically lasts 1–3 months, well within the PAO window. If the product changes color, smell, or texture before 12 months, discontinue use.
Verdict: Dove Pampering Shea Butter & Vanilla Body Wash is an outstanding everyday body wash that genuinely delivers on its moisturizing promises. The sulfate-free, amino acid-based surfactant system cleanses gently without stripping the skin barrier, while the 24-Hour MicroMoisture technology and real shea butter create a noticeably softer, more hydrated skin feel from the very first use. At an accessible price point, it punches well above its weight class — rivaling premium body washes costing two or three times as much. The warm vanilla and shea fragrance is universally loved and creates a genuinely spa-like shower experience. The primary caveats are: it is not suitable for those with fungal acne (Malassezia) concerns due to its fatty acid content, and those with fragrance sensitivities should be aware of the disclosed allergens (Coumarin, Linalool, Limonene). For dry, normal, and combination skin types seeking daily luxury and real moisture benefits backed by dermatologist recommendation and decades of proven performance — this is a near-perfect choice.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
