Visible Brightening

High-purity Arbutin works alongside Phytic Acid and traditional herbal extracts to gently fade dullness and even out skin tone.

Triple Hyaluronic Acid

Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate and Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hyaluronate hydrate at multiple skin depths so skin never feels tight.

Ceramide-Reinforced Barrier

Ceramide AP helps cushion the cleansing process and supports the skin barrier — uncommon in a wash-off product.

Amino-Acid Surfactants

Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate and Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate cleanse without harsh sulfates, keeping the rinse-off feeling soft, not squeaky.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe

No retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone or chemical UV filters. Arbutin and Phytic Acid in a rinse-off cleanser are widely considered low-risk during pregnancy.

Not Fungal Acne (Malassezia) Safe

Contains fatty acids (Myristic, Lauric), PEGs and Glyceryl Stearate / PEG-100 Stearate which may feed Malassezia in those prone to fungal acne — though rinse-off contact time is short.

Mildly Comedogenic Potential

Myristic Acid and Lauric Acid can rate 3–4 on comedogenicity scales when left on skin. Risk is reduced because the product is rinsed off, but very oily/acne-prone users should patch test.

Citrus Peel Oils Present

Grapefruit and Sweet Orange Peel Oils are in low concentration but may sensitize very reactive skin. They are rinsed away rather than left on.

Layers Well With Actives

As a cleanser it precedes everything — safely compatible with Vitamin C, niacinamide, retinoids, AHA/BHA serums and sunscreen used afterwards.

Contains Methylparaben

Listed at the very end of the INCI in trace amounts. Methylparaben is approved by the EU SCCS up to 0.4% in cosmetics; those who specifically avoid parabens should note this.

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Arbutin ~1–2%Proven

A naturally occurring derivative of hydroquinone extracted from bearberry. It gradually inhibits melanin production by blocking tyrosinase activity, helping fade dark spots and even out tone — without the irritation associated with hydroquinone.

  • Mechanism: Reversibly inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin formation in the second step of pigmentation.
  • Onset: Slow, cumulative effect — generally gentler and better tolerated than kojic acid or hydroquinone.
  • Synergy: Works well stacked with direct tyrosinase inhibitors like Vitamin C and niacinamide layered afterwards.
Effective even in a rinse-off product because Arbutin is water-soluble and absorbs quickly during the cleansing step.

Phytic Acid <1%Promising

A gentle plant-derived AHA from rice bran that lightly exfoliates dull surface cells while also acting as a chelating agent — neutralising metal ions in the formula to keep it stable.

  • Exfoliation: Mild compared to glycolic or lactic acid, ideal for sensitive or beginner exfoliation users.
  • Antioxidant: Helps protect the formula and skin from oxidative stress.
  • Stabiliser: Improves shelf-life by binding trace metals from water.

Triple Hyaluronic Acid Complex ~0.5%Proven

The Hada Labo signature — three molecular forms of hyaluronic acid that bind moisture across multiple skin layers, ensuring skin doesn't feel tight or stripped after cleansing.

  • Sodium Hyaluronate: Standard HA form, hydrates the upper skin layers.
  • Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate ("Super HA"): Hydrates more effectively and longer than regular HA.
  • Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hyaluronate: Cationic HA that adheres to skin and rinses with reduced loss — particularly useful in cleansers.

Ceramide AP <0.5%Proven

A barrier-supporting ceramide that helps the skin retain moisture and resist irritation. Rare in a face wash and a meaningful addition for dry or sensitised skin.

  • Function: Mimics natural lipids that hold the stratum corneum together.
  • Benefit: Helps mitigate trans-epidermal water loss caused by surfactants.

Traditional Herbal Whitening Complex <1%Promising

A blend of seven East Asian botanical extracts long used in traditional medicine for skin clarity — Angelica, Bletilla, Mulberry Bark, Paeonia, Ampelopsis, Atractylodes and Poria Cocos.

  • Morus Alba (Mulberry Bark): Contains mulberroside that inhibits tyrosinase, supporting Arbutin's brightening action.
  • Paeonia Albiflora: Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds.
  • Poria Cocos: Traditionally used to soothe and clarify dull skin.
Concentrations of these botanicals are likely modest — they support the actives rather than carry the brightening effect on their own.

Amino-Acid Surfactant System ~10–15%Proven

Sodium Myristoyl Glutamate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate and Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate form the cleansing base. These amino-acid-derived surfactants are markedly milder than traditional sulfates (SLS/SLES).

  • Mildness: Lower stripping potential — preserves the acid mantle.
  • pH: Skin-friendly mild acidity (~5.5), kinder to the barrier than alkaline soap-based cleansers.
  • Foam: Creates a creamy, cushioning lather rather than aggressive bubbles.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Dispense a rice-grain amount

A pea-sized portion is plenty — Hada Labo creates a generous foam from very little product. Squeeze onto a dry palm.

2

Lather with lukewarm water

Add a few drops of water and rub between palms (or whip with a foaming net) until you have a creamy, cushioning foam.

3

Massage onto damp face

Apply in gentle circular motions for 30–60 seconds. Avoid scrubbing — let the surfactants do the work.

4

Rinse thoroughly

Splash with lukewarm water until no slip remains. Pat dry — skin should feel soft and supple, never tight.

5

Follow with hydration immediately

Apply your toner or essence within 60 seconds while skin is still slightly damp to lock in moisture.

06

Daily-use friendly: gentle enough for AM/PM with bonus brightening from Arbutin and Phytic Acid.

Combination
Good

Hydrates dry zones without over-stripping the T-zone. Light enough for daily use across all areas.

Oily / Acne-Prone

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes. The formula contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens or high-dose essential oils — the typical ingredients flagged during pregnancy. Arbutin and Phytic Acid are widely considered safe in rinse-off products. As always with skincare during pregnancy, we recommend confirming with your OB-GYN or dermatologist if you have any concerns.

No — it is not classified as fungal-acne safe. The formula contains Myristic Acid, Lauric Acid, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Glyceryl Stearate and PEG-100 Stearate, which can feed Malassezia yeast. While the rinse-off contact time is short (under 60 seconds), users with active fungal acne flares should choose a strictly fatty-acid-free cleanser instead.

Yes — as a cleanser it precedes all your serums and acids. There are no incompatibilities. In fact, the gentle Phytic Acid and Arbutin pair beautifully with a Vitamin C or niacinamide serum applied afterwards (they target tyrosinase from different angles for stronger brightening). Apply retinol or AHA/BHA later in your routine as normal.

It's optimised for dry, normal, combination and mature skin looking for gentle daily brightening without barrier compromise. It also suits sensitive skin (with a patch test) thanks to its fragrance-free, alcohol-free, mild-acidity formula. Very oily, congested or fungal-acne-prone skin may want to look elsewhere due to the fatty acid content.

Expect subtle radiance within 1–2 weeks (smoother texture from Phytic Acid) and visible tone improvement at 4–6 weeks of consistent twice-daily use. Significant fading of post-acne marks and dark spots typically takes 8–12 weeks. As with all rinse-off Arbutin products, results are gradual — pair with daily sunscreen and a leave-on Arbutin or Vitamin C serum for best results.

Use it as your second step in the morning (after splashing water) and as your second step at night (after an oil cleanser to remove makeup and SPF). Always follow with toner or hydrating lotion within 60 seconds, then your serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen (AM only).

The formula has a moderate comedogenic rating (around 3/5) due to Myristic Acid and Lauric Acid. However, because it's a rinse-off cleanser with very short skin contact time, real-world clogging risk is much lower than the rating suggests. Most users — including combination skin types — tolerate it well. If you're highly congestion-prone, patch test on the jawline first.

The Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months — look for the open-jar symbol "12M" on the tube. With normal twice-daily use, a 100 g tube typically lasts 2–4 months, so most users will finish it well before expiry. Store away from heat and humidity to maximise shelf life and active stability (Arbutin can degrade with prolonged sun exposure).

— Skincarisma verdict
4.5 / 5 ★★★★★

Verdict: Hada Labo Premium Whitening Facewash punches well above its price tag — a thoughtful, layered J-Beauty formula that actually does something more than just clean. The Arbutin + Phytic Acid + herbal complex delivers gradual, gentle brightening, while Triple Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramide AP keep the barrier comfortable. It is not for fungal-acne sufferers or paraben-strict users, but for anyone with dry, mature, normal or pigmentation-prone skin who wants a daily-use brightening cleanser without irritation, this is one of the best value picks on the J-Beauty shelf.

lightbulb What are Notable Effects & Ingredients?

Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.

Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
