18-in-1 Versatility

3x Concentrated Formula
Three times more concentrated than most liquid soaps. Dilute for various uses — a little goes a very long way, making it highly cost-effective over time.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens, or any other ingredients flagged during pregnancy. The unscented Baby Mild version is the safest choice for expectant mothers.
Coconut oil and olive oil contain fatty acids (lauric, oleic) that may feed Malassezia yeast. However, since this is a rinse-off product, the risk is minimal compared to leave-on formulas.
While raw coconut oil is highly comedogenic (4/5), the saponification process transforms it into soap — significantly reducing pore-clogging potential. As a rinse-off cleanser, comedogenicity is very low.
Meets the Environmental Working Group's strictest standards for health and safety. All ingredients score low on EWG's toxicity scale.
As a true soap, it has a naturally alkaline pH around 9-10. This is higher than skin's natural pH of ~5.5 and can be drying for some. Follow with a moisturizer for best results.
While gentle enough for babies, this is not a tear-free formula. Keep out of eyes. If soap gets in eyes, flush well with water for 15 minutes.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSOrganic Coconut Oil Primary OilProven
The primary saponified oil in the formula. After saponification with potassium hydroxide, coconut oil becomes potassium cocoate — a highly effective cleanser that produces rich, bubbly lather. The source of the soap's excellent cleaning power.
- Source: Regenerative Organic Certified farms in Sri Lanka
- Function: Surfactant (cleansing agent) after saponification
- Lather: Produces the most abundant, foamy lather of any soap oil
Organic Olive Oil Secondary OilProven
Olive oil adds conditioning and moisturizing properties to the soap. The Baby Unscented version contains double the olive oil of scented varieties, making it the gentlest option. Rich in oleic acid and natural antioxidants.
- Source: Fair trade suppliers in Palestine and Israel
- Function: Emollient, conditioning agent after saponification
- Benefit: Creates a creamier, less stripping lather than coconut oil alone
Organic Palm Kernel Oil Tertiary OilProven
Contributes to a smooth, creamy lather and adds hardness to the soap formula. Sourced from smallholder farms in Colombia where no new deforestation occurs and wildlife habitat is not threatened.
- Source: Regenerative Organic Certified smallholder farms in Colombia
- Function: Lather enhancer, adds body to the soap
- Note: Palm kernel oil (from the seed) is different from palm oil (from the fruit)
Organic Hemp Seed Oil Conditioning OilPromising
Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids in an optimal ratio. Adds nourishing, skin-softening properties to the formula. One of Dr. Bronner's signature ingredients since the company's founding.
- EFA Profile: Contains linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3)
- Function: Skin conditioning, adds a silky feel to the soap
- Research: Hemp seed oil has shown anti-inflammatory properties in dermatological studies
Organic Jojoba Wax Conditioning WaxProven
Technically a liquid wax ester rather than an oil, jojoba closely mimics human skin's natural sebum. It conditions and softens the skin without a greasy residue. The updated label correctly identifies it as "Jojoba Wax" rather than oil.
- Structure: Wax ester (not a triglyceride oil), closest to human sebum
- Function: Emollient, skin conditioner, helps balance oil production
- Source: Derived from the seed of the desert shrub Simmondsia chinensis
Citric Acid pH AdjusterProven
Used in a small amount to adjust the pH of the final soap product. Helps neutralize excess alkalinity from the saponification process. Also functions as a mild preservative and chelating agent.
- Function: pH adjuster, chelating agent, mild preservative
- Note: Present in trace amounts — not enough to exfoliate skin
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) AntioxidantProven
A natural antioxidant that protects the oils in the formula from going rancid and extends shelf life. Also provides minor skin-soothing benefits as a free-radical scavenger.
- Function: Antioxidant, preservative for oils, skin protectant
- Research: Well-documented as one of the most effective natural oil stabilizers

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEUse as your first step in both AM and PM routines. As a true soap, it can replace both your face wash and body wash. Follow with toner or moisturizer to rebalance skin's pH after cleansing. Dilute for gentler use — 2-3 drops on wet hands is enough for the face.
How to use
HOW TO USEFace Wash
Apply 2-3 drops onto wet hands. Lather gently and massage onto wet face in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Follow with toner and moisturizer.
Body Wash
Apply one small squirt onto a wet washcloth or hands. Lather and apply to wet body. Rinse clean. For a bath, add approximately 2 tablespoons to an average-sized tub.
Hand Soap
Pre-dilute in a foaming pump dispenser: mix 1 part soap with 3-4 parts water. Pump, lather, and rinse. The concentrated formula makes this extremely economical for everyday hand washing.
Household Cleaning
For an all-purpose spray, mix ¼ cup soap per quart of water in a spray bottle. For dishes, pre-dilute 1 part soap with 10 parts water. For laundry, use ⅓–½ cup per large load.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESCoconut-oil-based soap excels at cutting through excess oil and sebum. Leaves skin feeling clean without heavy residue. Ideal for oily skin types.
The alkaline pH and strong cleansing action can be stripping for dry skin. If used, dilute heavily and always follow with a rich moisturizer. The Baby Unscented version is gentlest.
Works well on oilier zones. Use sparingly on drier areas and follow with a balancing moisturizer. Diluting the soap helps prevent over-cleansing.
The Baby Unscented version has no essential oils or fragrance and double the olive oil. EWG Verified for safety. Patch test first; the alkaline pH may irritate highly reactive skin.
Effectively removes excess oil and bacteria. The Tea Tree variant offers natural antimicrobial benefits. As a rinse-off product, comedogenic risk is minimal. Avoid over-cleansing.

Frequently asked questions
FAQYes. Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens, parabens, phthalates, or any other ingredients commonly flagged during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The Baby Unscented version is the safest choice as it contains no essential oils. It is EWG Verified, meaning it meets the Environmental Working Group's strictest safety standards. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have specific concerns.
Caution is advised. The formula contains coconut oil and olive oil, which are sources of fatty acids (lauric acid, oleic acid) that can potentially feed Malassezia yeast. However, since this is a rinse-off product that does not remain on the skin, the risk is significantly lower than with leave-on products. If you have active fungal acne, you may want to choose a soap specifically formulated without these oils, or ensure you rinse thoroughly.
Yes, but with a note about pH. Dr. Bronner's has an alkaline pH (~9), while actives like vitamin C, AHA, and BHA work best at acidic pH levels. Use Dr. Bronner's as your cleanser, rinse thoroughly, then wait a few minutes before applying acidic actives. The rinsing step removes the alkalinity. Alternatively, use a pH-balancing toner between cleansing and applying actives. There is no direct ingredient conflict — the soap itself contains no actives that would interact negatively.
Dr. Bronner's works best for normal to oily skin types. Its coconut-oil-based formula is excellent at cutting through excess sebum and leaving skin feeling clean. For sensitive skin, the Baby Unscented version (with double olive oil and no essential oils) is recommended. Those with very dry or eczema-prone skin may find it too stripping due to the alkaline pH — in that case, dilute generously and always follow with a moisturizer, or consider a gentler, pH-balanced cleanser.
You'll feel the cleansing effect immediately — skin feels thoroughly clean and refreshed after the very first use. If you're switching from a synthetic detergent cleanser, expect a 1-2 week adjustment period as your skin adapts to the alkaline pH. By weeks 3-4, most users report balanced, clearer skin. The long-term benefits of a simplified, chemical-free cleansing routine become most apparent after 1-2 months of consistent use.
Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is your cleanser — the very first step in both your morning and evening skincare routines. Apply to wet skin, lather, and rinse thoroughly. Follow with toner (to rebalance pH), serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen (AM only). For the face, use just 2-3 drops on wet hands. For the body, one small squirt on a wet washcloth is sufficient.
Comedogenic rating: 1 out of 5 (very low risk). While raw coconut oil scores a 4/5 on the comedogenicity scale, the saponification process fundamentally transforms it into soap — a completely different chemical compound. As a rinse-off product, it has minimal contact time with pores. The soap rinses clean and does not leave an oily film. For acne-prone skin, Dr. Bronner's is generally considered a safe cleanser choice.
Approximately 36 months (3 years) after opening. True soap has a naturally long shelf life because its alkaline pH inhibits bacterial and fungal growth — no synthetic preservatives are needed. The tocopherol (vitamin E) in the formula further protects the oils from oxidation. Store at room temperature; the soap may cloud in cold temperatures but this is purely cosmetic and does not affect performance. Simply place the bottle in warm water to restore clarity.
Verdict: Dr. Bronner's Pure-Castile Liquid Soap is a genuine icon of clean, ethical personal care. With only 9 organic, fair trade ingredients and verified 18-in-1 versatility, it delivers exceptional value — especially when you factor in the 3x concentration. It excels as a body wash, hand soap, and household cleaner for normal to oily skin types. The main trade-offs are an alkaline pH that can be drying for sensitive or dry skin, and a thin consistency that takes some getting used to. For those who value transparency, sustainability, and a truly minimalist ingredient list, Dr. Bronner's remains the gold standard in castile soap — a product that has earned its cult following over more than 75 years.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
