Glycolic acid, lactic acid, and willow bark extract work together to exfoliate, unclog pores, and smooth rough skin texture.

🧬

7% Pore-Refining Complex

Peptides and a plant-based retinol alternative clinically proven to visibly shrink pore size and strengthen pore walls over time.

🍚

Rice Starch + Mushroom Extract

Natural oil-absorbing ingredients that balance sebum production and visibly tighten the appearance of pores with just one application.

πŸ›‘οΈ

Gluconolactone (PHA)

An ultra-gentle polyhydroxy acid ideal for sensitive skin. Exfoliates without stripping, while preventing moisture loss and supporting the skin barrier.

πŸ’§

Non-Drying Formula

Contains squalane, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium PCA to maintain hydration while treating pores and texture.

🌿

Centella + Chamomile Complex

Soothing botanical extracts that calm potential irritation from acids and support skin healing and recovery.

πŸ›‘οΈ Safety & Compatibility

⚠️
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Contains glycolic acid and lactic acid (AHAs). While concentrations are low (~1–2%), consult your OB-GYN before use during pregnancy. No retinoids or salicylic acid present. Willow bark is a gentler, plant-based BHA alternative.

❌
Fungal Acne (Malassezia)

Not fungal acne safe. Contains Saccharomyces Ferment, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isodecyl Neopentanoate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, and Safflower Seed Oil, which can feed malassezia yeast.

βœ…
Non-Comedogenic

Clinically tested and confirmed non-comedogenic. Rated 1/5 on the comedogenic scale. Safe for acne-prone skin without clogging pores.

βœ…
Fragrance-Free & Hypoallergenic

No added fragrances, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or mineral oils. Dermatologist tested and hypoallergenic. Clean at Sephora certified.

⚠️
Sensitive Skin Note

Due to the 10% acid blend, sensitive skin users should start with once daily application and gradually increase. A mild tingling sensation upon application is normal.

β˜€οΈ
Sun Sensitivity

AHA and BHA acids increase photosensitivity. Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen during the day when using this product.

πŸ”¬ Ingredient Breakdown

πŸ§ͺ Lactic Acid (AHA) ~2% Proven

A gentle alpha-hydroxy acid that exfoliates the skin surface, promotes cell turnover, brightens uneven tone, and helps reduce the appearance of enlarged pores. More hydrating than glycolic acid.

  • Function: Chemical exfoliant that dissolves dead skin cell bonds for smoother, brighter skin
  • Benefit: Gentler than glycolic acid; also acts as a humectant to attract moisture
  • Evidence: Extensively studied AHA with proven efficacy for texture, tone, and mild acne

πŸ”¬ Glycolic Acid (AHA) ~0.7% Proven

The smallest AHA molecule with superior skin penetration. Exfoliates dead skin cells, stimulates collagen production with long-term use, and helps reduce pore congestion and refine skin texture.

  • Function: Exfoliates, stimulates collagen synthesis, improves skin brightness
  • Concentration: Low dose (~0.7%) works synergistically with lactic acid for gentle daily exfoliation
  • Evidence: Gold-standard AHA backed by decades of dermatological research
⚠️
Increases sun sensitivity. Always apply SPF 30+ during the day when using this product.

🌿 Willow Bark Extract (BHA) Part of 10% blend Promising

A natural, plant-based source of salicin (a salicylic acid precursor). Provides gentle BHA-like exfoliation that penetrates into pores to dissolve sebum buildup without the harshness of synthetic salicylic acid.

  • Function: Oil-soluble exfoliant that works inside the pore lining to clear congestion
  • Benefit: Gentler alternative to salicylic acid; anti-inflammatory properties
  • Note: Not technically salicylic acid, so may be milder for sensitive skin types

πŸ›‘οΈ Gluconolactone (PHA) ~1.2% Proven

A polyhydroxy acid (PHA) that provides ultra-gentle exfoliation ideal for sensitive skin. Larger molecule size means slower penetration and less irritation while still improving texture, hydration, and skin barrier function.

  • Function: Gentle exfoliant, humectant, and antioxidant
  • Benefit: Stimulates natural hyaluronic acid production; supports healthy skin microbiome
  • Evidence: Shown to be effective against acne and clogged pores when used consistently over 12+ weeks
βœ…
One of the gentlest chemical exfoliants available. Great for sensitive skin types who cannot tolerate traditional AHAs.

🧬 Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5 ~0.3% Promising

A collagen-boosting tripeptide (marketed as Syn-Coll) that strengthens skin structure and pore walls over time. Helps counteract the slackening of pore walls due to aging for a firmer, tighter appearance.

  • Function: Signals skin to produce more collagen, improving elasticity and firmness
  • Study: In-vivo study found 60% of participants noticed reduced pore size after 4 weeks of use
  • Benefit: Part of the 7% Pore-Refining Complex; targets pore structure at a deeper level

🍚 Rice Starch + Mushroom Extract Part of complex Promising

A duo of natural ingredients that work as optical blurring powders and oil absorbers. Rice starch mattifies the skin while mushroom extract helps regulate sebum production for a visibly tighter pore appearance.

  • Function: Oil absorption, mattifying, and visual pore-minimizing effect
  • Benefit: Immediate visible results from the optical blurring properties of silica and rice starch
  • Note: Provides instant smoothing while acids and peptides work long-term

πŸ’§ Squalane + Glycerin + Sodium Hyaluronate Glycerin ~4% Proven

A trio of powerful hydrating ingredients that prevent the drying effects often associated with acid serums. Squalane mimics skin's natural oils, glycerin draws in moisture, and hyaluronic acid plumps and hydrates.

  • Function: Humectants and emollients that maintain skin hydration and barrier integrity
  • Evidence: Glycerin has been shown to be more effective than AHAs and HA as a humectant in some studies
  • Benefit: Ensures the serum treats without stripping or dehydrating the skin

Moisturizer
5
Sunscreen (AM)

Use AM + PM on clean, dry skin. The brand recommends 3–4 times per week, alternating with other treatment serums for optimal results. Always follow with SPF in the morning.

πŸ“ How to Use

1

Cleanse Your Skin

Start with clean, dry skin. Use your favorite cleanser and pat your face dry completely before application.

2

Apply One Pump

Dispense one pump of serum onto your fingertips. One pump is enough for the entire face. Gently press and spread evenly across your face, focusing on areas with enlarged pores and uneven texture.

3

Let It Absorb

Wait 30–60 seconds for the serum to fully absorb before applying your next product. A mild tingling sensation is normal due to the acid content.

4

Follow With Moisturizer

Apply your moisturizer on top to lock in hydration. In the morning, always finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen.

5

Sensitive Skin Tip

If you have sensitive skin or experience irritation, reduce usage to once daily or every other day. Avoid layering with other strong actives (retinol, vitamin C, or additional AHA/BHA) in the same routine.

πŸ‘€ Who Is It For?

βœ… Perfect for you if:

  • You struggle with enlarged, visible pores

  • You want a clean, fragrance-free exfoliating serum
  • You prefer a multi-acid approach (AHA + BHA + PHA)
  • You want clinically tested results with proven ingredients
  • You value vegan and cruelty-free formulations

❌ Consider alternatives if:

  • You have fungal acne (malassezia) β€” contains triggering ingredients

  • You want maximum exfoliation strength β€” acid concentrations are mild
  • You prefer very watery, non-tacky textures
  • You are on a strict budget β€” $39 for 30 mL is premium pricing
  • You are pregnant and want to avoid all acids entirely

🎯 Skin Type Compatibility

Oily Skin β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… Excellent

Ideal match. AHA/BHA acids control sebum, rice starch absorbs oil, and peptides tighten pore walls. Addresses all major oily skin concerns.

Combination Skin β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜… Excellent

Balances well across T-zone and cheeks. The non-drying formula with squalane and glycerin keeps dry areas hydrated while treating oily zones.

Great for general texture refinement and maintaining smooth, even-toned skin. Use 3–4 times a week for best results without over-exfoliating.

Sensitive Skin β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜† Moderate

The PHA (gluconolactone) is gentle, but the 10% acid blend may cause tingling or irritation. Start with once-daily use and patch test first. Fragrance-free is a plus.

Dry Skin β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†β˜† Moderate

Contains hydrating ingredients (squalane, glycerin, hyaluronic acid) but the exfoliating acids may feel drying. Layer a rich moisturizer on top and limit use to 2–3 times per week.

Acne-Prone Skin β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜† Good

Non-comedogenic and clinically tested safe for acne-prone skin. Willow bark unclogs pores gently. However, not suitable for fungal acne due to ferment and ester ingredients.

65% Match
The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Use with caution. This serum contains glycolic acid and lactic acid (AHAs) at low concentrations (~2% and ~0.7%), and willow bark extract (a plant-based BHA alternative). It does not contain retinoids, salicylic acid, or hydroquinone. While low-concentration AHAs are generally considered lower risk, many dermatologists advise pregnant and breastfeeding women to avoid chemical exfoliants as a precaution. Consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist before using this product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

No, this serum is not fungal acne safe. It contains several ingredients known to feed malassezia yeast, including Saccharomyces Ferment (a yeast-derived ferment), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (medium-chain fatty acid ester), Isodecyl Neopentanoate (ester), Cetearyl Alcohol (fatty alcohol), Coco-Caprylate/Caprate (ester), and Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil. If you have fungal acne, consider alternatives like The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution, which has a simpler, FA-safe formula.

This serum already contains AHAs (glycolic + lactic acid), a BHA (willow bark), and a PHA (gluconolactone), so layering additional acid products in the same routine is not recommended as it may cause over-exfoliation and irritation. You can use retinol or vitamin C in a separate routine (e.g., retinol at night, this serum in the morning, or alternate nights). If you want to combine actives, introduce them gradually and monitor your skin's response. The brand recommends using this serum 3–4 times per week, which leaves room for retinol or vitamin C on alternate days.

This serum is best suited for oily and combination skin types. It was specifically designed to address enlarged pores, excess oil, uneven texture, and skin congestion β€” concerns most common in oily and combination skin. Normal skin types will also benefit from the texture-smoothing effects. Sensitive skin users should start slowly (once daily) due to the 10% acid blend, and dry skin types may need a richer moisturizer on top. The formula is non-comedogenic and safe for acne-prone skin.

According to the brand's third-party clinical study, you can expect: immediate results β€” a 25% reduction in pore appearance after just one use due to optical blurring powders. Within 1 hour, pores appear 33% smaller. After 2 weeks of consistent use, a 55% reduction in pore appearance and 64% smoother texture. Maximum results come at 8 weeks, with a 73% reduction in pore appearance and 88% improvement in rough, bumpy skin texture. For peptide benefits (collagen boosting and pore wall tightening), allow at least 4–8 weeks of consistent use.

Apply as your serum step after cleansing and toning (if you use a toner), and before moisturizer. The order is: Cleanser, Toner (optional), Pore Refine Serum, Moisturizer, and Sunscreen (AM only). Apply to clean, dry skin using one pump for the entire face. The brand recommends morning and evening use, or 3–4 times per week alternating with other treatment serums for optimal results. Always follow with SPF 30+ in the morning.

No. This serum has been clinically tested and confirmed non-comedogenic. It has a comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5, meaning it has a very low likelihood of clogging pores. The formula is specifically designed to unclog and minimize pores, not cause congestion. It is safe for acne-prone skin. However, while it won't clog pores, it does contain ingredients that may trigger fungal acne (a different condition from regular acne).

The Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months. Once opened, use within one year for optimal efficacy and safety. The opaque pump bottle helps protect the light-sensitive acid ingredients from degradation. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. At the recommended usage of one pump twice daily, the 30 mL bottle should last approximately 6–8 weeks. A refill option is available at a reduced price on the brand website and Sephora.

β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜†
4.2 out of 5

Verdict: The InnBeauty Project Pore Refine Serum is a well-formulated, multi-mechanism treatment that takes a thoughtful approach to pore refinement β€” combining gentle AHA/BHA exfoliation, collagen-boosting peptides, and instant optical blurring in one fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formula. The third-party clinical data is impressive, and the Clean at Sephora certification adds trust. However, the acid concentrations are on the milder side (good for beginners, less exciting for acid veterans), the formula is not fungal acne safe, and the $39 price tag for just 30 mL makes this a premium investment. Best suited for oily-to-combination skin types looking for a gentle, daily-use pore treatment backed by clinical evidence.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
