Rose Hydrosol Base

Rosa Damascena flower water sits as the second ingredient, delivering natural antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds to calm and soften skin.

Soothes Redness

Chamomile, elderflower and aloe vera juice work in synergy to reduce visible redness and quiet reactive, irritated skin.

Multi-Layer Hydration

Glycerin, propanediol, sodium PCA, betaine and sodium hyaluronate combine 5 humectants to bind water at multiple skin depths.

pH Balancing

Mildly acidic formulation (around skin's natural pH of 4.5–5.5) helps restore the acid mantle after cleansing without stripping.

Zero Alcohol

Unlike traditional astringent toners, this formula contains no drying alcohols — making it appropriate for daily use on dry and sensitive types.

Cruelty-Free Brand

Pixi does not test on animals at any stage, and confirms suppliers do not test on their behalf either.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone or chemical sunscreens. Generally considered safe — Pixi recommends consulting your physician for personalized advice.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia)

Contains PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil and a small amount of Camellia Sinensis extract — generally well tolerated, but those with severe malassezia folliculitis may want to patch test.

Comedogenic Rating: 1/5

Predominantly water and humectant-based with no heavy oils or butters. Very low pore-clogging potential for most acne-prone users.

Layering with Actives

Compatible with retinol, vitamin C, niacinamide, AHAs and BHAs. Apply Rose Tonic first as a hydrating base, then layer treatments on top.

Fragrance Sensitivity

The natural rose hydrosol gives a noticeably strong floral scent. Highly sensitive or rosacea-prone skin may prefer a fragrance-free alternative.

Patch Test Recommended

Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear for 24 hours before full-face use, particularly if you have reactive or eczema-prone skin.

03

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Rosa Damascena Flower Water (Rose Hydrosol) ~30–40%Promising

The signature ingredient — sitting in the #2 slot on the INCI list, second only to water. Damask rose hydrosol is a diluted byproduct of rose essential oil distillation, carrying a fraction of rose oil's antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds along with its signature scent.

  • Antioxidant activity: Contains polyphenols and flavonoids that help neutralize environmental free radicals.
  • Soothing effect: Traditionally used in dermatology for irritated, reactive skin.
  • Mild antimicrobial: Naturally helps support a balanced skin microbiome.
The fragrance compounds in floral waters can occasionally trigger reactions in highly sensitive skin.

Glycerin + Propanediol 5–10%Proven

A classic dual-humectant pairing. Glycerin is a skin-identical molecule that draws water into the upper skin layers, while corn-derived propanediol enhances penetration and improves the sensory feel of the formula.

  • Skin barrier: Glycerin is recognized as one of the most effective and well-tolerated humectants in cosmetics.
  • Hydration boost: Propanediol can enhance moisturization and act as a mild solvent.

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice 3–5%Proven

Aloe vera juice replaces some of the water in the formula, contributing polysaccharides, vitamins A, C and E, plus mild anti-inflammatory glycoproteins that calm post-cleansing redness.

  • Soothing: Long-documented anti-inflammatory and wound-healing benefits.
  • Lightweight hydration: Adds moisture without occlusion or greasiness.

Chamomile + Elderflower Extracts ~1–2%Promising

Chamomilla Recutita (matricaria) flower extract and Sambucus Nigra (elderflower) extract bring botanical anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds — bisabolol, apigenin and rutin — that support irritated and sensitized skin.

  • Chamomile: Bisabolol has documented anti-irritation properties in patch studies.
  • Elderflower: Traditionally used to brighten and tone skin; contains polyphenolic antioxidants.

Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract ~0.5–1%Proven

Green tea leaf extract delivers EGCG and other catechins — some of the most studied antioxidants in skincare, helping defend against UV-induced free radical damage and supporting skin clarity.

  • Antioxidant power: Catechins are 25–100x more potent than vitamins C and E in some assays.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce visible redness and irritation over time.

Sodium PCA + Sodium Hyaluronate + Betaine ~1–2%Proven

A trio of skin-identical humectants. Sodium PCA is a key component of the skin's Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF), sodium hyaluronate holds up to 1,000x its weight in water, and betaine adds osmoprotection — together delivering layered hydration.

  • NMF support: Sodium PCA replenishes what cleansing strips away.
  • Surface plumping: Sodium hyaluronate immediately smooths fine dehydration lines.

Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Bud Extract <1%Promising

Wild rose / rosehip bud extract is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A precursors and flavonoids. Though present at low concentration, it adds gentle antioxidant support and reinforces the rose-themed botanical profile.

  • Brightening: Natural source of bioavailable vitamin C derivatives.
  • Antioxidant: Contains carotenoids that support skin defense.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Cleanse first

Begin with freshly cleansed skin, AM or PM. Pat lightly with a towel, leaving skin slightly damp for better absorption.

2

Saturate a cotton pad

Apply a generous amount of tonic to a soft cotton pad until evenly damp. Alternatively, decant into a spray bottle or press in with palms.

3

Sweep across face

Glide gently across face, neck and décolletage in upward motions, avoiding the eye area. No need to rinse off.

4

Layer your treatments

While skin is still damp, follow with serum, moisturizer and (in the morning) SPF to seal in the hydration.

06

Who is it for?

WHO

  • You have dehydrated, tight or post-cleansing reactive skin
  • You experience occasional redness or sensitivity
  • You want a beginner-friendly, alcohol-free toner
  • You enjoy classic rose scents in your skincare
  • You're looking for an affordable hydrating step before serums

  • You have severe malassezia folliculitis and avoid all PEGs
  • You prefer truly fragrance-free formulations
07

Skin type compatibility

SKIN TYPES
Dry Skin
Excellent

Five layered humectants and zero alcohol make this a gentle, hydration-prepping step that won't strip parched skin.

Sensitive / Reactive
Excellent

Chamomile, aloe and elderflower help calm visible redness — ideal post-cleanse on irritated skin (patch test first if rosacea-prone).

Combination
Good

Lightweight texture suits both oilier T-zone and drier cheeks without leaving a heavy or sticky finish.

Oily Skin
Good

Watery, fast-absorbing texture won't add shine — but won't deeply mattify either. Pair with an exfoliating toner for best results.

Acne-Prone
Good

Low comedogenic risk and no acne-aggravating actives. A small minority of users have reported breakouts — patch test if reactive.

Mature Skin
Good

Antioxidant rosehip and green tea support skin defense, while humectants temporarily plump fine dehydration lines.

Pros & cons

BALANCED

Praised

  • Genuinely soothing and calming on irritated, post-cleansing skin
  • Lightweight, instantly absorbing texture with a dewy finish
  • Alcohol-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free formulation
  • Affordable mid-range pricing compared to luxury rose toners
  • Travel-friendly 100ml size available
  • Layers beautifully with the rest of the Pixi Tonic family
  • Contains real Rosa Damascena flower water (not just rose extract)

Criticized

  • Rose scent is strong — described by some as artificial
  • Doesn't deliver dramatic transformation (it's a gentle support step)
  • 100ml bottle disappears quickly with cotton-pad application
  • Contains PEG-40 — not for those strictly avoiding PEGs / fungal acne triggers
  • Phenoxyethanol can be controversial for very young or eczema-prone skin
  • Less actives-driven than other tonics in the Pixi range

Very different chemistry — based on witch hazel rather than rose hydrosol. More toning/clarifying, less hydrating. Good for combination/oily skin who still want a rose note.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Generally yes. The formula contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone or chemical sunscreens — the ingredients most often flagged during pregnancy. The base of water, rose hydrosol, glycerin, propanediol, aloe and gentle botanical extracts is widely considered low-risk. That said, every pregnancy is unique. Pixi explicitly recommends checking the ingredient list with your physician, who can review it against your personal medical history.

Mostly safe, with one caveat. The formula containsPEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, which is a polysorbate-style emulsifier some highly fungal-acne-reactive users prefer to avoid. There are no esters, fatty acids or fermented ingredients (the most common malassezia triggers). Most users with mild fungal acne tolerate it well, but if you have severe malassezia folliculitis, patch test on the jawline for 5–7 days before full-face use, or consider a strictly fungal-acne-safe alternative.

Yes — and it actually pairs beautifully with actives. Apply Rose Tonicbefore your treatment to hydrate and buffer skin, which can reduce irritation from retinoids and acids. It's commonly layeredafter Pixi Glow Tonic (5% glycolic acid) to soothe. With vitamin C serums, apply Rose Tonic first, let it absorb, then apply your vitamin C. There are no known incompatibilities.

It performs best ondry, sensitive, reactive and dehydrated skin — those who want a calming, hydrating step rather than an exfoliating one. Combination and normal skin types also benefit. Oily skin can use it but may prefer pairing it with an exfoliating toner like Pixi Glow Tonic for more visible results. Highly fragrance-sensitive skin or rosacea-prone skin should patch test first due to the natural rose scent.

Immediate effects — refreshed feel, calmer skin, slight dewiness — are noticeable from the first use. Improved hydration baseline typically appears within1 week of consistent twice-daily use. Visible reductions in everyday redness usually emerge after2–3 weeks, with cumulative antioxidant benefits (smoother, more even tone) over4–6 weeks. Because this is a supportive (not transformative) toner, it works best as a long-term staple in your routine.

Step 2 — immediately after cleansing and before everything else. Apply with a saturated cotton pad or pat with palms onto damp skin, then follow with essence (optional), serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. If you also use Pixi Glow Tonic, apply Glow Tonic first (it exfoliates), then Rose Tonic to soothe, then continue your routine.

Very unlikely. We rate it1 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale. The formula is over 90% water, hydrosol, humectants and botanical extracts — none of which are notable pore-cloggers. There are no heavy oils, butters or comedogenic esters. A small minority of users on review platforms have reported breakouts, which may relate to fragrance sensitivity rather than true comedogenicity. Patch test for 3–5 days if you're highly acne-reactive.

The Period After Opening (PAO) is12 months, indicated by the open-jar symbol with "12M" on the packaging. Stored properly with the cap closed, in a cool, dark place, the formula stays potent and fresh for a full year. Unopened, it remains good until the printed best-before date. Discard earlier if you notice color, scent or texture changes — these signal preservation breakdown.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.5 / 5 ★★★★★

Verdict: Pixi Rose Tonic is a beautifully balanced, alcohol-free hydrating toner that excels at its core promise — calming, soothing and refreshing post-cleanse skin. With Rosa Damascena flower water as the second ingredient and a thoughtful supporting cast of aloe, chamomile, elderflower, green tea and hyaluronic acid, it's far more than a glorified rose mist.Best suited for dry, sensitive and reactive skin types who want a gentle daily ritual, and an excellent companion to Pixi Glow Tonic for those who want both exfoliation and calm. The natural rose scent is polarizing — fans love it, fragrance-averse skin may not — so factor that in before purchasing. At its mid-range price point, it punches well above the basic-rose-water category and remains a deserved cult favorite.

Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
