Jeongseon Black Soybean Extract (1,000 ppm)

Sourced from Yakkong black soybeans grown in Jeongseon, Korea — containing 19.5× more anthocyanins and isoflavones than regular soybeans. Neutralizes free radicals, helps fade hyperpigmentation, and delivers anti-aging peptides deep into the skin.

Quintuple Ceramide Complex

All five essential ceramide types — NP, NS, AP, AS, EOP — work synergistically with cholesterol, phytosphingosine, and hydrogenated lecithin to rebuild the lipid matrix of the skin barrier. Clinically the gold standard for barrier restoration.

Skin-Firming Peptides

Two clinically validated peptides: Tetradecyl Aminobutyroylvalylaminobutyric Urea Trifluoroacetate (0.15–0.3%) helps reduce dynamic wrinkles, and Dipeptide Diaminobutyroyl Benzylamide Diacetate supports skin firmness by targeting expression lines.

7 Vitamin B Complex from Soymilk

Pantothenic Acid (B5), Folic Acid (B9), Pyridoxine (B6), Thiamine HCl (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Cyanocobalamin (B12), and Niacinamide (B3) collectively support cellular energy, brightening, and skin repair from within.

Triple Probiotic Ferments

Lactobacillus/Soymilk Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Rye Flour Ferment, and Bacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract deliver bio-available nutrients, improve microbiome balance, and enhance absorption of active ingredients.

Multi-Layer Humectant System

Glycerin (3.6–4.4%), Panthenol (1.5–1.8%), Betaine, Trehalose, and Mannitol layer up to draw and bind moisture at multiple skin depths, delivering all-day hydration without a heavy or tacky finish.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe

Contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical UV filters. All key actives — ceramides, peptides, niacinamide, panthenol, squalane — are considered safe during pregnancy. Always consult your OB/GYN for personalized advice.

Fungal Acne (Malassezia) — Use with Caution

Contains Stearic Acid, Polyglyceryl-3 Distearate, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, and Cetearyl Alcohol — all potential Malassezia triggers. Those with active fungal acne should patch test carefully or consider an alternative.

Low Comedogenic Rating (1/5)

Primary emollient Coco-Caprylate/Caprate and Squalane score very low on the comedogenic scale. No heavy pore-clogging oils. Suitable for oily and acne-prone skin when fungal acne is not a concern.

Sensitive Skin Tested

Completed dermatological irritation testing. Fragrance-free, no harsh alcohols, no sulfates, no parabens, and no silicones. Formulated with skin-identical ingredients that mimic the skin's own lipid structure.

Retinol Compatibility

Works well as a pre-retinol hydration layer. Apply this serum first, allow to absorb, then apply retinol. The ceramide complex helps buffer potential retinol-induced dryness and irritation.

Vitamin C & AHA/BHA Compatibility

Layer-friendly with Vitamin C (apply Vit C first, this serum after). Safe to combine with low-percentage AHA/BHA exfoliants — the barrier-strengthening ceramides can help offset mild irritation from chemical exfoliants.

03

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Glycine Max (Soybean) Seed Extract 1,000 ppm (0.1%)Proven

Sourced from Yakkong black soybeans native to Jeongseon, Korea. These heirloom black soybeans contain 19.5× more anthocyanins and isoflavones (genistein, daidzein) than conventional soybeans. They act as powerful antioxidants, help fade UV-induced hyperpigmentation by disrupting melanin synthesis, and deliver low-molecular-weight peptides that support skin elasticity and firmness.

  • Concentration: 1,000 ppm (confirmed by brand — also listed as 10,032 ppm in some formulations, indicating full-formula enrichment)
  • Key Bioactives: Genistein, Daidzein, Anthocyanins, Glycitein, Isoflavones
  • Evidence: Multiple in-vitro studies show soy isoflavones inhibit UVB-induced melanin production and reduce oxidative stress markers
  • Origin: Jeongseon County, Gangwon Province, South Korea
Antioxidant activity is well-documented. Higher anthocyanin content in black variety vs. white soybean makes this a premium sourcing choice.

Quintuple Ceramide Complex (NP + NS + AP + AS + EOP) Full ComplexProven

Five distinct ceramide types that mirror the exact composition of the human skin's natural lipid barrier. Ceramide NP and AP are the most abundant in healthy skin; Ceramide EOP is the rarest and most critical for barrier integrity. Together with co-ingredients Cholesterol, Phytosphingosine, and Hydrogenated Lecithin, they form a complete lamellar membrane structure that locks in moisture and keeps irritants out.

  • Ceramide NP: Most abundant naturally — restores moisture and barrier function
  • Ceramide EOP: Linoleic acid-bound esterified ceramide, essential for long-chain barrier sealing
  • Ceramide AP & AS: Alpha-hydroxy acid-derived, support structural integrity of the lamellar bodies
  • Ceramide NS: Non-hydroxy sphingosine-based; smooths surface texture and strengthens intercellular cohesion
  • Evidence: Clinical studies consistently show ceramide-dominant emollients reduce TEWL (transepidermal water loss) by 30–50% in compromised barriers
Using all 5 ceramide types is significantly more effective than single-ceramide formulas. This is the same approach used by medical-grade barrier creams.

Tetradecyl Aminobutyroylvalylaminobutyric Urea Trifluoroacetate 0.15–0.3%Promising

A lipopeptide known commercially as Leuphasyl or syn-serine. It works by inhibiting neuronal signaling at the neuromuscular junction, reducing the contraction intensity of facial expression muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles (crow's feet, forehead lines). Sometimes called a "Botox-like" peptide, though topical efficacy is more modest than injections.

  • Mechanism: SNAP-25 protein antagonist — reduces muscle micro-contractions that deepen expression lines over time
  • Evidence: One published study showed reduction in dynamic wrinkles over 6–8 weeks of consistent use at effective concentrations
  • Best Results: Expression areas — crow's feet, forehead, between brows
Results are gradual — minimum 6–8 weeks of consistent daily use before noticeable improvement in expression lines.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) Est. 1–3%Proven

One of the most well-studied skincare actives. Niacinamide inhibits melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes, visibly brightening dark spots and evening skin tone. It also stimulates ceramide synthesis, strengthens the barrier, reduces inflammation (redness from eczema, acne), and minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores.

  • Brightening: Multiple double-blind trials show 5% niacinamide reduces hyperpigmentation comparably to 4% hydroquinone
  • Barrier Boost: Upregulates ceramide production — complements the ceramide complex already in this formula
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Reduces erythema and skin reactivity markers
Safe for all skin types; no photosensitivity; compatible with all actives at typical concentrations found in serums.

Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) 1.5–1.8%Proven

One of the most reliable multi-tasking humectants in skincare. Panthenol penetrates deeper than most moisturizing ingredients, converting to pantothenic acid within the skin. It accelerates wound healing (including micro-damage from actives), reduces redness, and binds water both at the surface and deeper skin layers.

  • Humectant capacity: Binds up to 16× its weight in water
  • Wound healing: Stimulates keratinocyte proliferation and tissue regeneration
  • Barrier support: Works synergistically with ceramides to reduce TEWL

Squalane Est. 1–2%Proven

A stabilized, non-oxidizing form of squalene — a lipid naturally found in human sebum. Squalane is an excellent emollient that closely mimics the skin's own oils, locking in moisture without feeling greasy. It's highly biocompatible and unlikely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.

  • Emollient action: Fills intercellular lipid spaces to smooth skin texture
  • Comedogenic rating: 1/5 — very unlikely to clog pores
  • Note on FA safety: Source (plant vs. sugarcane) affects fungal acne safety; Round Lab does not specify origin
If managing fungal acne (Malassezia), check with Round Lab on squalane sourcing — olive-derived squalane may carry trace fatty acids that feed yeast.

Hydroxydecyl Ubiquinone (Idebenone analog) Est. tracePromising

A synthetic analog of Coenzyme Q10 (Ubiquinone) with enhanced skin penetration. Functions as a potent mitochondrial antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress and supports cellular energy production. More stable and better absorbed than standard CoQ10, making it effective for anti-aging at lower concentrations.

  • Antioxidant strength: Rated one of the most potent synthetic antioxidants in comparative studies
  • Anti-aging: Supports ATP synthesis in skin cells, improving overall skin vitality and resilience

Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Extract Est. trace–0.5%Promising

Derived from the cacao tree, this extract is rich in polyphenolic antioxidants including epicatechin and catechins. It provides antioxidant protection against environmental stressors, supports skin hydration, and has mild anti-inflammatory properties. Pairs well with the vitamin complex in this formula.

  • Polyphenols: Flavanols shown to improve skin elasticity and hydration in oral and topical applications
  • Anti-aging: Reduces oxidative degradation of collagen and elastin fibers

Triple Probiotic Ferment Complex Est. combined tracePromising

Three distinct ferment types: Lactobacillus/Soymilk Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Rye Flour Ferment, and Bacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract. The fermentation process pre-digests complex molecules into smaller, more bioavailable fragments that absorb more efficiently. Ferments also contain postbiotic metabolites that support the skin microbiome and have gentle brightening effects.

  • Bioavailability: Fermentation breaks down proteins and starches, improving nutrient delivery efficiency
  • Microbiome support: Postbiotics (lactic acid, enzymes) support a balanced skin flora
  • Brightening: Fermentation by-products can inhibit tyrosinase activity mildly
Ferment filtrates are debated in fungal acne circles — though most are considered safe, those highly reactive to Malassezia should patch test before committing.

Multi-Humectant Blend (Glycerin, Betaine, Trehalose, Mannitol) Glycerin ~3.6–4.4%Proven

Four complementary humectants operating at different skin depths and molecular mechanisms. Glycerin is a cornerstone of barrier function, naturally present in skin and proven at scale. Betaine (from sugar beet) and Trehalose (a natural sugar) are osmolytes that protect cells under stress. Mannitol is a polyol that draws moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers simultaneously.

  • Glycerin: Upregulates aquaporins (water-transport channels) in skin cells — deeply hydrating, not just surface-level
  • Trehalose: Stabilizes cellular membranes under dehydration stress; used in pharmaceutical preservation for a reason
  • Betaine: Gentle osmoprotectant — reduces TEWL and has mild anti-irritant effects

Adenosine Est. 0.04%Proven

A nucleoside naturally found in all human cells. In skincare, adenosine is one of the most well-evidenced anti-aging actives — it stimulates collagen synthesis, improves skin elasticity, and reduces the depth of fine lines. It is FDA-recognized as a wrinkle-reducing ingredient in South Korea's ingredient approval system.

  • Collagen synthesis: Stimulates fibroblast activity and upregulates type I collagen production
  • Approved: Listed in Korea's MFDS-approved functional ingredient list for anti-wrinkle claims

Ascorbyl Glucoside (Vitamin C derivative) Est. trace–0.5%Promising

A stable, water-soluble Vitamin C derivative that converts to L-ascorbic acid in the skin. Gentler and more stable than pure L-ascorbic acid, making it ideal for sensitive skin. Provides brightening, antioxidant protection, and mild collagen-supporting benefits. At low concentrations (as found in this formula), brightening effects are gentle and cumulative.

  • Stability: Glucoside bond prevents rapid oxidation unlike pure Vitamin C
  • Conversion: Enzymatically cleaved by glucosidase in skin cells to release free ascorbic acid

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Cleanse Thoroughly

Begin with a gentle, low-pH cleanser to remove impurities without disrupting your skin barrier. Pat dry — do not rub.

2

Apply Toner or Essence (Optional)

If using a hydrating toner or essence, apply it first and allow to absorb. The Soybean Nourishing Toner from Round Lab pairs perfectly as a prep step.

3

Dispense 2–3 Pumps of Serum

Pump a pea-to-dime-sized amount (2–3 pumps) into your palm. Warm slightly between fingertips — this aids absorption and melts the milky texture beautifully.

4

Press and Pat into Skin

Using both palms, press the serum gently onto the face — cheeks, forehead, chin, and neck. Then use fingertips to pat lightly until absorbed. Avoid rubbing, which can reduce penetration.

5

Allow to Absorb (30 seconds)

Wait approximately 30 seconds for the serum to fully sink in before applying your next product. The milky texture absorbs quickly and leaves no residue.

6

Follow with Moisturizer & SPF

Seal in the serum with a moisturizer. In the morning, finish with broad-spectrum SPF 30+. For extra nourishment in colder months, layer with the Round Lab Soybean Nourishing Cream.

Skin type compatibility

SKIN TYPES
Dry Skin
Excellent

This serum was designed with dry skin in mind. The 5-ceramide complex rebuilds the barrier, panthenol and glycerin replenish moisture reserves, and squalane seals it in. Pairs ideally with a rich moisturizer on top for all-day hydration.

Combination Skin
Excellent

The lightweight milky texture absorbs quickly without making oily zones greasy. Delivers targeted hydration where needed (dry cheeks, tight T-zone patches) while the low-comedogenic formula won't clog pores in the oilier areas.

Sensitive Skin
Excellent

Completed dermatological irritation testing. Fragrance-free and free from all common allergens. Skin-identical ceramides and the panthenol content actively calm redness and support a compromised barrier. Highly recommended for reactive skin types.

Mature / Aging Skin
Excellent

The firming peptide complex, adenosine, hydroxydecyl ubiquinone, and soybean isoflavones collectively address multiple signs of aging: fine lines, loss of elasticity, dullness, and thinning barrier. A comprehensive anti-aging serum at a surprisingly accessible price point.

Oily / Acne-Prone Skin
Good

Low comedogenic rating and no pore-clogging oils. Niacinamide helps regulate sebum. However, contains some fatty acid derivatives (Stearic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol) that may trigger those prone to Malassezia/fungal acne. Patch test recommended.

Fungal Acne–Prone
Moderate

Not fully fungal acne safe. Polyglyceryl-3 Distearate, Stearic Acid, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, and Cetearyl Alcohol are potential Malassezia triggers. Those managing active fungal breakouts should either patch test carefully or choose a dedicated FA-safe serum.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes, this serum is considered pregnancy and breastfeeding safe. It contains no retinoids, no salicylic or glycolic acids, no hydroquinone, no chemical UV filters, and no high-dose essential oils. The key actives — ceramides, panthenol, glycerin, niacinamide, adenosine, soybean extract — are widely regarded as safe during pregnancy. As always, consult your OB/GYN or midwife before adding any new skincare product to your routine during pregnancy.

Not fully. This serum contains several ingredients that may feed Malassezia yeast and trigger fungal acne flare-ups: Stearic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polyglyceryl-3 Distearate, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, and Glyceryl Stearate Citrate. If you are currently managing active fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis), we recommend either patch testing this product first on a small area or choosing an alternative serum with a cleaner FA-safe profile. Users without fungal acne concerns typically tolerate this serum very well.

Yes, and this serum actually pairs exceptionally well with actives. Apply Vitamin C first (on cleansed, dry skin), let it absorb, then apply this serum. With retinol, use this serum as a hydrating pre-layer or on alternating nights to buffer irritation — the ceramide complex helps protect the barrier from retinol-induced dryness. For AHA or BHA, use this serum after your exfoliant has absorbed (waiting 20–30 minutes is ideal for lower-pH actives). The niacinamide in this formula also helps soothe post-exfoliation sensitivity.

This serum was formulated primarily for dry, combination-dry, sensitive, and mature skin types. It excels for anyone with a compromised barrier, dehydrated skin, or those seeking anti-aging nourishment without harsh actives. It works well for combination skin given its fast absorption. Oily skin types can use it if they don't have fungal acne concerns — niacinamide helps with sebum regulation. The one skin type that should use caution is those with active fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis), due to some fatty acid-containing emulsifiers.

You'll notice hydration and plumpness improvements within the first 1–2 weeks of use. Barrier strengthening and reduced skin sensitivity typically become apparent after 3–4 weeks of consistent use. The peptides (for firming and fine line reduction) require at least 6–8 weeks of daily use to show meaningful results. Brightening effects from niacinamide and ascorbyl glucoside are more gradual — expect to notice improvements in evenness and radiance after 8–12 weeks of consistent morning and evening use.

This serum goes in Step 3 of your routine: after cleansing (Step 1) and toner/essence (Step 2), and before your moisturizer (Step 4) and SPF in the morning (Step 5). As a serum, it's a leave-on treatment — apply a sufficient amount (2–3 pumps) and pat gently into skin until absorbed, then follow with moisturizer. It can be used both morning and evening. Round Lab recommends pairing it with the Soybean Nourishing Toner before and the Soybean Nourishing Cream after for maximum results within the line.

The serum has a low overall comedogenic rating of 1/5. The primary emollient, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, scores 1 on the comedogenic scale. Squalane also rates 1/5. The formula contains no heavy pore-clogging oils. Most users with oily or acne-prone skin tolerate it without pore-clogging issues. Note that comedogenic ratings are theoretical guides — individual skin reactions vary. If you have highly pore-sensitive skin, patch testing on the jawline for 2 weeks before full-face use is recommended.

The Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months — indicated by the open-jar symbol on the packaging. The preservative system (1,2-Hexanediol + Ethylhexylglycerin) keeps the formula stable and microbiologically safe for one year after first use. Store away from direct sunlight and extreme heat. If you use 2–3 pumps morning and evening, a 50 ml bottle will typically last 1–2 months depending on application generosity, so you'll likely replace it well within the 12-month window.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.5 / 5 ★★★★★

Verdict: The Round Lab Soybean Nourishing Serum is one of the most ingredient-rich barrier serums at its price point. The combination of all five skin-identical ceramides, dual firming peptides, 7 Vitamin B types, triple probiotic ferments, and premium black soybean extract from Jeongseon puts it in a category usually reserved for much pricier skincare. For those seeking a fragrance-free, pregnancy-safe, comprehensive anti-aging nourishing serum — particularly if your skin is dry, sensitive, or mature — this is an exceptional choice. The only meaningful caveats are its limited fungal acne safety profile (due to several fatty acid emulsifiers) and the relatively small 50 ml size. If fungal acne is not your concern, this serum earns its reputation as a cult K-beauty staple.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
