SENSORYMulti-Layer Hydration
6% Glycerin, 2% Urea and Panthenol work together as humectants to draw moisture into the skin and lock it in place for all-day comfort.
Barrier Strengthening
3% Niacinamide boosts ceramide production while Allantoin and Centella Asiatica soothe and repair, building a resilient skin barrier over time.
Anti-Pigmentation Complex
Contains DermStim™ complex with Buddleja Davidii stem cell extract to target uneven skin tone and dark spots, specifically formulated for skin of colour.
NAFE Safe Formula
No denatured Alcohol, No Fragrance, No Essential oils — formulated to minimise the chance of irritation, which can trigger hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone or chemical sunscreens. All ingredients are considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Free from ferments, fatty acids (C11–C24), esters, polysorbates and oils that feed Malassezia yeast. Confirmed fungal acne safe by ingredient analysis.
Oil-free, silicone-free formula with zero comedogenic ingredients. Highly unlikely to clog pores or cause breakouts.
Scored low irritation on WIMJ analysis. NAFE Safe standard means no denatured alcohol, fragrance or essential oils — the top triggers for contact dermatitis.
Present at roughly 1.5–2.3% as a pH adjuster and humectant, not at exfoliating strength. Supports the skin's acid mantle rather than causing exfoliation.
The brand advises against use on cracked, very dry or overly reactive skin. Patch test on a discreet area first and build up use gradually over 1–2 weeks.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSGlycerin 6%Proven
One of the most well-researched humectants in skincare. Draws water from the deeper dermis and the environment into the upper skin layers, keeping it plump, soft and hydrated all day.
- Function: Humectant & skin-softener (emollient)
- Evidence: Decades of clinical research confirming moisturising efficacy; improves barrier repair
- Concentration: 6% is well within the effective range (3–10%) for meaningful hydration
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) 3%Proven
A multi-functional superstar ingredient. At 3%, it supports barrier function, evens out skin tone, regulates oil production and helps reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and fine lines.
- Function: Brightening, barrier repair, anti-blemish, anti-aging
- Evidence: Effective from 2–5% for skin tone and barrier; widely studied in peer-reviewed literature
- Synergy: Works well alongside glycerin and urea to enhance overall hydration and tone-evening

A natural moisturising factor (NMF) found naturally in human skin. At 2%, it acts purely as a humectant — attracting and retaining water — without any keratolytic (exfoliating) action.
- Function: Humectant, skin barrier support, NMF component
- Evidence: Clinically proven for dry skin conditions; exfoliation only starts above 10%
- Bonus: Enhances antimicrobial peptide expression and supports the skin microbiome
Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) 2%Proven
Converts to Vitamin B5 in the skin. Deeply moisturises, soothes irritation and supports wound healing. Known for its calming anti-inflammatory properties.
- Function: Soothing, moisturising, skin barrier repair
- Evidence: Well-studied humectant with zero irritancy and zero comedogenicity rating
- Concentration: 2% is clinically effective for hydration and soothing benefits

- Function: Anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antioxidant
- Evidence: Extensive traditional use backed by modern clinical studies on barrier repair and soothing
Buddleja Davidii Leaf Cell Culture Extract DermStim™Promising
A plant stem cell extract from the Butterfly Bush. Part of the proprietary DermStim™ complex targeting anti-pigmentation, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection — specifically chosen for skin of colour.

- Evidence: Emerging in vitro studies suggest photoprotective and anti-oxidant activity

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEUse after double cleansing in the PM routine (Step 3 of 6). Apply before the Dr V Exfoliate to Glow or Antioxidant Power Serum. Using the toner before the exfoliator helps reduce possible irritation.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse First
Complete your double cleanse (oil cleanser followed by water-based cleanser) to remove makeup, sunscreen and impurities.
Spray or Dispense
Spray the toner directly onto your face, or dispense into your palms. The convenient spray nozzle allows for even, hands-free application.
Press Into Skin
Gently press and pat the toner into your skin using your fingertips. Do not rub or wipe — pressing helps the actives absorb more effectively.
Follow With Treatment
While skin is still slightly damp, apply your serum (e.g. Dr V Antioxidant Serum) or exfoliator (once a week). The hydrated base helps actives penetrate more effectively.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESFocuses on multi-weight hyaluronic acid rather than niacinamide and urea. Excellent humectant toner but lacks the anti-pigmentation complex and niacinamide benefits. Contains fragrance.
A serum rather than a toner, so it has a different texture and application step. Higher niacinamide concentration (10%) may cause flushing in some users. Lacks the multi-humectant hydrating base.
Also fragrance-free and hydrating, with centella and panthenol. Slightly more viscous texture. Lacks urea and the DermStim anti-pigmentation complex; not specifically formulated for skin of colour.

Frequently asked questions
FAQYes. The formula contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens or any other ingredients flagged as unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. All 16 ingredients are considered safe for expectant and nursing mothers. A retailer (ValueSpot) also explicitly lists it as pregnancy and breastfeeding safe.
Yes. The formula contains no ferments, fatty acids (C11–C24), esters, polysorbates, oils or any other ingredients known to feed Malassezia yeast. SkinSort confirms it is fungal acne safe. It is one of the few toners that is both effective for hydration and fully compatible with fungal acne-prone skin.
Yes, this toner pairs well with most actives. Apply the toner first to hydrate and prep skin, then layer your retinol or vitamin C serum on top. Dr V recommends using it before the Exfoliate to Glow (which contains AHA) to reduce potential irritation. You may also use a retinol product in your routine, though the brand notes it is optional since niacinamide and peptides are already in the Daily Range.
It is suitable for normal, dry, oily and combination skin types. The brand specifically recommends it for normal-to-dry skin and for skin of colour. It is oil-free and lightweight enough for oily skin, while its multiple humectants provide enough hydration for dry skin (with a moisturiser on top). Those with very sensitive or damaged skin should patch test first.
Hydration benefits are immediate — skin feels softer and plumper from the first use. For barrier repair and texture improvement, expect 4–6 weeks of consistent use. For visible brightening and reduction in hyperpigmentation marks, plan for 2–3 months, as changes in pigmentation require time to develop in the deeper skin layers.
It is Step 3 of 6 in the Dr V PM Routine. Apply after your double cleanse (oil cleanser + water cleanser) and before your exfoliator (once a week) or serum (every night). Follow with moisturiser. In the AM, you can also use it after cleansing and before sunscreen if desired.
No. The formula has a comedogenic rating of 0 out of 5. It is completely oil-free, silicone-free and contains no known pore-clogging ingredients. It is safe for acne-prone skin and has been confirmed as non-comedogenic by ingredient analysis platforms.
The estimated Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months. The brand states that at recommended usage (one application daily in the PM routine), a 150ml bottle typically lasts 4–6 weeks. Store in a cool, dry place at room temperature — do not refrigerate or expose to direct sunlight.
Verdict: The Skincare by Dr V Super Hydrating Toner is an exceptionally well-formulated, no-nonsense hydrating toner with a clean 16-ingredient list and declared active concentrations. At just £15 for 150ml, it delivers clinical-grade humectants (6% Glycerin, 3% Niacinamide, 2% Urea, 2% Panthenol) plus soothing Centella and Allantoin in a formula that is pregnancy safe, fungal acne safe and non-comedogenic. Its NAFE Safe standard makes it one of the gentlest toners available. The only drawbacks are limited availability outside the brand website and a bottle size that heavy users may find runs out quickly. For anyone with skin of colour seeking a dermatologist-backed, irritant-free hydrating toner — this is a standout choice.
Product Overview
Quick product notes are a great way to check if a product is free from commonly avoided ingredients by skincare enthusiasts. These preferences come about for different reasons depending on the ingredient such as personal experiences, sensitivities, health preferences & etc.
Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you
Notable Effects & Ingredients
Why are some products great for some people and horrible for others? Well everyone has different skin types and different reactions to the same ingredients.
We've identified a range of ingredients that are commonly regarded as potentially good or bad for those with Dry, Oily/Acne-Prone or Sensitive skin.
A product that contains good or bad ingredients for your skin type doesn't always flat out make the entire product good or bad for your skin. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine your skins reaction.
One of the best ways to use this section is to troubleshoot products you've had bad experiences with in the past. Check if it contains any of the marked ingredients to point out suspect ingredients to avoid in the future!

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
