Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) 7 Molecular WeightsProven

The star ingredient of this formula. Seven different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid provide hydration at multiple levels of the scalp and hair shaft, from surface moisturization to deeper barrier support.

  • Mechanism: Small HA molecules penetrate the scalp for deep hydration; large molecules form a moisture-locking film on the surface
  • Clinical Support: HA is well-established as a humectant capable of holding up to 1,000x its weight in water
  • Scalp Benefit: Helps strengthen the scalp barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss and irritation
Multi-weight HA is more effective than single-weight, as it targets different layers simultaneously for comprehensive hydration.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)Proven

A powerhouse skincare active now applied to scalp care. Niacinamide strengthens the scalp's moisture barrier, reduces inflammation, and supports overall scalp resilience.

  • Barrier Support: Increases ceramide production in the skin/scalp, reinforcing the protective lipid barrier
  • Anti-Inflammatory: Reduces redness and irritation, making it beneficial for sensitive or reactive scalps
  • Sebum Regulation: Helps balance oil production without over-drying

Panthenol (Vitamin B5) Pro-VitaminProven

A well-established humectant and hair conditioning agent. Panthenol penetrates the hair shaft to improve moisture retention, elasticity, and shine from within.

  • Hair Penetration: Converts to pantothenic acid inside the hair, improving flexibility and reducing breakage
  • Moisturizing: Acts as a humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the scalp and hair
  • Comedogenicity: Rated 0 – will not clog pores or follicles

ApiScalp™ (Celery Seed Extract)Promising

Nécessaire's proprietary scalp-soothing complex derived from Apium Graveolens seeds. Designed to calm itchiness, minimize build-up, and reverse irritation for a healthier scalp environment.

  • Anti-Irritation: Celery seed extract contains apigenin and other flavonoids with anti-inflammatory properties
  • Build-Up Control: Helps prevent product residue and sebum accumulation on the scalp
  • Clinical Testing: Tested in a 12-week clinical study with 50+ participants as part of the Nécessaire Hair Essentials system

Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice 10%Proven

A generous 10% concentration of aloe vera provides soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits to the scalp. Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, plus antioxidants that protect against environmental stress.

  • Soothing: Well-documented anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties calm irritated scalps
  • Hydration: Natural polysaccharides in aloe help lock in moisture
  • Antioxidant: Provides vitamins and enzymes that protect scalp cells from oxidative damage

Persea Gratissima (Avocado) OilSupportive

A nourishing emollient rich in oleic acid and vitamins. Adds conditioning benefits to the hair shaft, helping to soften and smooth strands during the cleansing process.

  • Emollient: Rich in fatty acids that coat and condition the hair, reducing frizz and adding shine
  • Nutrient-Rich: Contains vitamins E, A, and D for scalp nourishment
Avocado oil has a comedogenic rating of 2 and may feed Malassezia yeast. Present in a low concentration in this rinse-off formula, minimizing risk.

How to use

HOW TO USE
1

Wet Hair Thoroughly

Saturate hair and scalp completely with warm water. This helps the gel formula distribute evenly and lather more effectively.

2

Apply to Scalp & Hair

Dispense a quarter-sized amount into palms. Apply from the top of the scalp down to the tips, focusing on the scalp area where cleansing is most needed.

3

Massage for Rich Foam

Use fingertips (or a silicone scalp brush) to gently massage the product into the scalp for 1–2 minutes. This activates the plant surfactants and allows the actives to work.

4

Rinse Well

Rinse thoroughly with warm water until all product is removed. Follow immediately with The Conditioner for optimal hydration and detangling.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes. The Shampoo contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens, or any other ingredients typically flagged as unsafe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The formula uses gentle plant surfactants, hyaluronic acid, and B vitamins – all considered safe. As always, consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist for personalized advice.

Use with caution. The formula contains Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (an ester derived from coconut oil) and Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, both of which can potentially feed Malassezia yeast. While these are present in relatively low concentrations and this is a rinse-off product (reducing contact time), those with active fungal acne on the scalp may want to consider strictly FA-safe alternatives like Vanicream or Free & Clear shampoos.

Yes. The Shampoo is a gentle, rinse-off cleanser with no active exfoliants that would conflict with retinol, vitamin C, or chemical exfoliants. If you use a scalp treatment containing AHA/BHA or retinol, The Shampoo is an excellent gentle base cleanser to pair with those treatments. Its soothing formula with aloe vera and niacinamide can actually help calm any irritation from stronger scalp treatments.

The Shampoo excels for dry, sensitive, eczema-prone, and thinning hair scalps. It holds the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance and is hypoallergenic. It also works well for oily scalps thanks to niacinamide's sebum-regulating properties. Those with normal scalps will enjoy it as a gentle daily cleanser, though some with very thick or coarse hair may find they need a richer formula.

Many users report immediate scalp relief after their first wash – reduced tightness, less itching, and a cleaner feel. Visible improvements in flaking and irritation typically appear within 1–2 weeks of consistent use. In Nécessaire's 12-week clinical study (using the full system), 80% reported thicker-looking hair, 84% reported fuller-looking hair, and 88% reported healthier-looking hair.

The Shampoo is your first step on wash day. Apply to wet hair and scalp, massage to lather, then rinse thoroughly. Follow with The Conditioner (required). After washing and conditioning, you can apply scalp treatments like The Scalp Serum, then proceed with leave-in products and styling. Use daily or on your regular wash days.

The Shampoo has a very low comedogenic risk (rated 1/5). It is certified non-comedogenic by the brand and confirmed through dermatologist testing. The only ingredient with notable comedogenic potential is avocado oil (rated 2/5), but it is present in a low concentration and this is a rinse-off product, so the risk of pore clogging is minimal. Users with acne along the hairline can rinse carefully to avoid residue on the face.

The Shampoo has a Period After Opening (PAO) of 12 months. The 250ml bottle typically lasts 6–8 weeks with daily use, or 2–3 months if washing every other day. Store in a cool, dry place (normal bathroom conditions are fine). The product uses a preservative system of Caprylhydroxamic Acid, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, and Sodium Benzoate to maintain stability and freshness.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.4 / 5 ★★★★☆

Verdict: Nécessaire The Shampoo is a standout choice for anyone prioritizing scalp health, especially those with dry, sensitive, or eczema-prone scalps. The skincare-grade formulation with 7-weight hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and panthenol is genuinely unique in the shampoo category. The NEA Eczema Seal, clean ingredient list (only 21 ingredients), and clinical backing add real credibility. The main trade-offs are the premium price point ($28/250ml) and the fact that conditioner is essential – this is not a standalone product. If you value clinical efficacy, clean formulation, and scalp-first hair care, The Shampoo delivers on its promises.

lightbulb What are Notable Effects & Ingredients?

Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
