SENSORYAdvanced SPF 50+ Sun Protection
Six UV filters including Tinosorb S (Bemotrizinol), Ethylhexyl Triazone, Drometrizole Trisiloxane, and Avobenzone provide photostable, broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB radiation. The filter combination exceeds EU UVA-PF requirements.
Tested on Polyallergic Skin
Formulated under a unique protocol: 48-hour occlusive patch testing AND twice-daily application for 4 weeks on skin reactive to at least two allergens from the European Standard Allergen Series. Zero allergic reactions permitted before launch.
Skin Barrier Repair
Glycerin and Propanediol act as multi-weight humectants to restore moisture balance. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride and Diisopropyl Sebacate provide a silky, non-greasy emolliency that reinforces the lipid barrier without clogging pores.
Airtight, Preservative-Free Packaging
La Roche-Posay's patented hermetically sealed airless pump keeps the formula free of preservatives without compromising sterility or efficacy. Each pump delivers a measured dose — no contamination, no oxidation, no dried-up residue.
Antioxidant Defence
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) at a meaningful concentration neutralises free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental stressors, extending the photo-protective efficacy and guarding against oxidative skin damage throughout the day.
Ophthalmologically Tested
Clinically verified not to sting or irritate eyes — a critical criterion for those with sensitive skin who tend to react even to proximity of fragrance or harsh preservatives. Safe to apply close to the eye area.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains multiple chemical UV filters including Ethylhexyl Salicylate (Octisalate), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone), Drometrizole Trisiloxane, and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinul A Plus), some of which have limited safety data in pregnancy. Consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist before use during pregnancy or nursing.
The formula does not contain known Malassezia-feeding fatty acids, esters, polysorbates, or fermented ingredients in problematic positions. Diisopropyl Sebacate and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride are present but at low levels; the formula is widely considered safe for fungal-acne prone skin.
Independently rated 1 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale. Oil-free, silica-based formula with no known pore-clogging oils. Formally tested as non-comedogenic and suitable for acne-prone, combination, and oily skin types.
Contains zero added fragrance (parfum) and zero traditional preservatives (no phenoxyethanol, parabens, benzyl alcohol, or MIT). The airtight packaging system enables this level of minimal formulation without compromising shelf stability.
Tested under dermatological and ophthalmological control on polyallergic skin — the strictest standard in European cosmetic allergy testing. Suitable for skin that reacts to multiple allergens. 100% tolerance rate required before product release.
Alcohol Denat. appears as the second ingredient and serves as a solvent and film-former for the sunscreen filters. It improves texture and reduces the white-cast associated with physical filters. This is standard in European sunscreen formulation, but very alcohol-sensitive individuals should patch-test first.
As a morning-use SPF fluid, it layers seamlessly over actives applied the night before. No interactions with retinoids, niacinamide, or peptides. Apply this product last in your AM routine before makeup; leave at least 5 minutes after actives.
Contains organic (chemical) UV filters. A small subset of photosensitive individuals may experience mild reactions to chemical filters. If you have previously reacted to avobenzone or octisalate, consult a dermatologist before use. No physical/mineral UV filters are included in this formulation.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSWater (Aqua) ~40%+Base
The primary base of the formula and carrier for all active and functional ingredients. In La Roche-Posay products, the water used is sourced from the thermal springs of La Roche-Posay, France — naturally rich in selenium (an antioxidant mineral), bicarbonate, and trace elements shown to soothe reactive skin and reduce cutaneous inflammation.
- Function: Solvent, thermal spring water with soothing selenium content
- Benefit: Hydrates, naturally calms reactive skin, supports barrier function
Alcohol Denat. ~15–20%UV Solvent
Denatured alcohol functions primarily as a solvent to dissolve oil-soluble UV filters (Tinosorb S, Ethylhexyl Triazone) and as a film-forming agent that creates a fast-drying, non-greasy finish on the skin. At these concentrations, it is essential for achieving the ultra-light fluid texture characteristic of European high-SPF formulas. Concerns about skin barrier disruption are real at very high concentrations in rinse-off products, but are mitigated here by co-humectants and the overall protective formula system.
- Function: Solvent for UV filters, film former, texture enhancer
- Clinical context: Standard usage in EU SPF fluids; paired with glycerin to counterbalance any drying tendency
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (Tinosorb S) ~3–5%Gold-Standard UV Filter
Known commercially as Tinosorb S or Bemotrizinol, this is widely considered the most effective broad-spectrum UV filter available in Europe. It simultaneously absorbs UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (290–320 nm) radiation, and critically, it photostabilises Avobenzone — preventing the photodegradation that would otherwise reduce UVA protection throughout the day. It is oil-soluble and highly photostable. Not yet FDA-approved for U.S. use, making this formula exclusive to European/global markets.
- Protection range: UVA + UVB (290–400 nm), peak absorption ~340 nm
- Key advantage: Photostabilises Avobenzone, extends full-day SPF efficacy
- Regulatory status: Approved EU, Australia, Asia; pending FDA approval
Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinul T 150) ~2–3%UVB Filter
The most effective UVB filter currently permitted in Europe, protecting the full UVB spectrum from 280 to 320 nm with peak absorption at 314 nm. It is highly photostable — does not degrade upon UV exposure — and does not penetrate the skin to any significant degree. Works synergistically with the broad-spectrum filters in this formula to provide complete UVB coverage.
- Protection range: UVB (280–320 nm), maximum efficacy at 314 nm
- Photostability: Excellent — does not degrade under UV exposure
Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone) ~2–3%UVA Filter
Avobenzone is the most widely used UVA filter globally, providing broad UVA protection (320–400 nm) with peak absorption at 360 nm. It is inherently photounstable — it degrades upon UV exposure — but this limitation is fully addressed in this formula by the presence of Tinosorb S (Bemotrizinol), which acts as a photostabiliser. This combination ensures full-day UVA protection without loss of efficacy.
- Protection range: UVA (320–400 nm), peak ~360 nm
- Stabilised by: Tinosorb S in this formulation
Drometrizole Trisiloxane ~1–2%UVA/UVB Filter
A silicone-based hybrid UV filter that bridges both UVA and UVB spectra (290–380 nm) while simultaneously providing emollient skin conditioning. Its unique silicone structure gives it excellent skin feel, spreads evenly, and contributes to the formula's smooth, non-greasy texture. Highly photostable and non-irritating, making it particularly suitable for sensitive skin formulations.
- Protection range: UVA + UVB (290–380 nm)
- Added benefit: Silicone emolliency improves spreadability and skin feel
Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid (Mexoryl SX) ~2%UVA Filter
A water-soluble UVA filter developed and patented by L'Oréal/La Roche-Posay, providing targeted protection against UVA-I and UVA-II wavelengths (290–400 nm). As a water-soluble filter, it complements the oil-soluble filters in this formula, creating a comprehensive multi-phase UV protection system. Highly photostable and with an excellent safety record.
- Protection range: UVA I + II (290–400 nm)
- Solubility: Water-soluble, complements oil-soluble UV filter system
- Developer: Patented L'Oréal technology exclusive to their brands
Glycerin ~3–5%Proven Humectant
A gold-standard, multi-weight humectant that draws water from the dermis and environment into the upper skin layers. Glycerin also reinforces the skin's Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF), improves barrier function, and has demonstrated anti-irritant properties. It directly counteracts any drying tendency from the Alcohol Denat. in the formulation.
- Mechanism: Draws water into stratum corneum via hygroscopic attraction
- Evidence: Over 50 years of clinical evidence supporting barrier hydration
Tocopherol (Vitamin E) ~0.5–1%Proven Antioxidant
Pure, unesterified Vitamin E in its most bioavailable form. Acts as a lipophilic antioxidant that neutralises free radicals generated by residual UV radiation that passes through the UV filter system. Works synergistically with chemical UV filters to provide a secondary layer of photoprotection. Also functions as a mild emollient and skin-conditioning agent.
- Function: Free radical scavenging, photoprotection support, skin conditioning
- Synergy: Regenerated by Vitamin C in combination formulas; effective alone as antioxidant
Silica ~1–3%Texture / Finish
Microscopically spherical silica particles that provide immediate sebum absorption and a soft-focus blurring effect on the skin surface. Silica is key to this formula's non-greasy, natural-to-satin finish — it absorbs excess oil without drying, prevents the formula from feeling heavy, and gives the skin a smooth, refined appearance. Also helps stabilise UV filter dispersion.
- Function: Sebum absorption, texture refinement, blurring effect
- Comedogenic rating: 0 — does not clog pores
Diisopropyl Sebacate ~2–4%Emollient
A light, non-greasy ester-based emollient that improves skin feel and spreadability. Acts as a carrier solvent for oil-soluble UV filters (Tinosorb S, Ethylhexyl Triazone), ensuring even distribution across the skin surface for consistent UV protection. Its low molecular weight gives the formula its characteristically "dry-oil" texture that absorbs without leaving residue.
- Function: Emollient, UV filter carrier/solvent, spreadability enhancer
- Comedogenic: Rating 1/5 — minimal pore-clogging risk

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply as the final step of your AM skincare routine, after moisturiser and before makeup. Allow 3–5 minutes for full absorption and film formation before applying foundation. For PM use, pair with a separate non-SPF moisturiser or barrier cream.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse Gently
Begin with a minimalist, low-irritant cleanser. La Roche-Posay recommends their Toleriane Dermo-Cleanser. Pat skin dry with a soft towel — avoid rubbing, which can trigger reactive skin.
Apply Serums & Actives (if any)
Layer any AM serums (Vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid) first. Allow each layer to absorb for 1–2 minutes. This product is applied last as an SPF, so actives go on first.
Dispense the Right Amount
Press the airless pump 1–2 times to dispense approximately 0.3–0.5 ml of product. For full SPF protection as tested (SPF 50+), use a generous amount — approximately a pea and a half to two peas' worth for the face and neck.
Apply to Face & Neck
Dot the fluid onto forehead, both cheeks, nose, chin, and neck. Gently smooth outward with fingertips using light, upward strokes. Pay attention to the hairline, ears, and eye area (ophthalmologically tested for safe close application).
Allow to Absorb, Then Reapply
Allow 3–5 minutes before applying makeup. For all-day protection, reapply every 2 hours of sun exposure, or after sweating or towel-drying. Pair with a separate evening moisturiser for PM use — this product is formulated for morning use as an SPF.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESOil-free formula with silica and perlite that actively absorb excess sebum. Leaves a natural-satin finish without adding shine. Ideal daily SPF for oily-prone skin.
Lightweight fluid texture balances perfectly across the T-zone and drier cheek areas without over-hydrating or under-hydrating. La Roche-Posay specifically formulates this for combination skin.
This is the product's core design brief. Polyallergic skin tested, ophthalmologically verified, and preservative-free. One of the safest SPF options for highly reactive, allergy-prone skin.
Non-comedogenic rating of 1/5, no pore-clogging oils, no polysorbates, and no preservatives that can aggravate acne. Safe for use over acne actives in an AM routine.
Works perfectly well for normal skin as a lightweight daily SPF. Those who prefer more hydration may want to layer a separate moisturiser underneath in drier climates or winter months.
The fluid texture and alcohol content may not provide sufficient hydration for dry or very dry skin types. Consider the Toleriane Dermallergo Cream (non-SPF) or layering a rich moisturiser underneath for better results.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESDeveloped by a UK dermatologist for sensitive skin, this fluid delivers SPF 50 with a lightweight, fragrance-free formula. Lacks the multi-filter EU complexity of Tinosorb S and Mexoryl SX, but provides solid UVA/UVB protection at a fraction of the price. Less clinically tested but very well tolerated.
A fragrance-free SPF 50+ daily fluid with a similarly lightweight, non-greasy texture. Good broad-spectrum coverage with Avobenzone and Octocrylene, though without the stabilising system of Tinosorb S. Contains fewer clinical claims for sensitive skin but widely tolerated. Available in 150 ml for better value.
Also a French pharmacy brand (L'Oréal group), Vichy's UV-Clear uses a similar European UV filter system and is specifically designed for sensitive, acne-prone skin. Includes Niacinamide for anti-redness. Slightly richer texture with a 40 ml size. The closest like-for-like dupe in terms of brand positioning and clinical credentials.

Frequently asked questions
FAQUse with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This formula contains several chemical UV filters, including Ethylhexyl Salicylate (Octisalate), Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane (Avobenzone), Drometrizole Trisiloxane, and Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinul A Plus). While none are categorically banned during pregnancy in EU or US regulations, some studies suggest limited systemic absorption of organic UV filters, and safety data during pregnancy is limited for some of these filters. Most dermatologists recommend mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sunscreens as the first choice during pregnancy as they are not systemically absorbed. Always consult your OB-GYN or dermatologist before use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Yes, this product is considered safe for fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) prone skin. It does not contain polysorbates, fermented ingredients, or significant concentrations of fatty acids in the C11–C24 range that are known to feed Malassezia yeast. Diisopropyl Sebacate and Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride are present but at low concentrations within a UV-filter dominated formula, and are generally considered acceptable for fungal-acne prone skin based on community consensus and ingredient analysis. The formula is also preservative-free, which eliminates several common triggers for fungal acne flares.
Yes — this product is designed as the final step of your morning routine and is fully compatible with all common skincare actives. Apply retinol and retinoids exclusively at night (this SPF fluid is for AM use only). Vitamin C serums, niacinamide, and peptides can be applied before this SPF fluid in the AM — allow each layer to absorb before applying the next. AHAs (glycolic, lactic) and BHAs (salicylic acid) can be used in the AM routine, applied before the SPF fluid, though if you are using high-concentration exfoliants, consider applying them at night to avoid potential photosensitivity. The Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid (Mexoryl SX) in this formula may slightly interact with Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) at very low pH — allow your Vitamin C serum to fully absorb before applying to minimise this.
This product is specifically formulated for combination to oily skin that is also ultra-sensitive, reactive, or allergy-prone. It is equally excellent for normal sensitive skin. The oil-free, silica-containing fluid texture with sebum-absorbing perlite means it was engineered for skin types that typically struggle with SPF — either finding them too heavy, too greasy, or too irritating. It is particularly recommended for those who have experienced allergic reactions to other sunscreens, those with eczema-prone or atopic facial skin, and those with reactive skin that flares to fragrance and preservatives. Those with dry or very dry skin will likely find the texture insufficiently moisturising and may prefer the Toleriane Dermallergo Cream (non-SPF) layered under a separate mineral SPF.
Sun protection begins immediately from the first application — provided you apply a generous amount (underapplication is the most common cause of reduced SPF efficacy). Soothing, anti-redness, and anti-irritation effects are noticeable from day one. Clinical studies on the Toleriane Dermallergo range show that with twice-daily use, 90% of users with sensitive skin report skin feeling soothed immediately, and after 4 weeks of consistent use, the skin's overall sensitivity is measurably reduced — meaning fewer reactive episodes, less visible redness at rest, and stronger tolerance to environmental triggers. For long-term benefits (reduced photo-ageing, improved skin texture, prevention of UV spots), the timeline is months to years of consistent daily SPF use.
This product is applied as the last step of your morning (AM) skincare routine, after all serums and moisturisers, and before makeup. The correct order is: Cleanser → Toner (if used) → Serum(s) → Moisturiser (if needed) → Toleriane Dermallergo Fluid SPF50+ → Makeup (if desired). As the SPF layer, it must be applied on top of everything else — applying products over a sunscreen dilutes the UV filter film and reduces protection. Allow 3–5 minutes for the film to set before applying foundation. For PM use, skip this product and use a non-SPF moisturiser such as Toleriane Dermallergo Cream or Night instead.
No — this formula has a comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5 and is formally tested as non-comedogenic by La Roche-Posay. It contains no heavy oils, waxes, or known high-comedogenic ingredients. The formula is oil-free; sebum absorption is provided by silica and perlite (both rated 0/5 on the comedogenic scale). It has been specifically tested and verified suitable for acne-prone skin. The absence of polysorbates and preservatives that can irritate follicles also makes this safer than most sunscreens for blemish-prone skin. Thousands of users with acne-prone skin report no breakouts from this product.
The period after opening (PAO) is 12 months, indicated by the open jar symbol on the packaging. However, La Roche-Posay's patented airtight airless pump is designed to extend stability beyond what a conventional pump bottle achieves — the hermetically sealed system prevents air entry and bacterial contamination, which is precisely why the formula can be preservative-free. Store below 25°C and away from direct sunlight. A 40 ml bottle used daily with adequate reapplication (face + neck morning + reapplication) will typically last 2–3 months with daily use, well within the PAO window.
Verdict: TheLa Roche-Posay Toleriane Dermallergo Fluid SPF50+ is one of the most clinically credible SPF fluids available for sensitive and allergy-prone skin. Its six-filter European UV system — anchored by the gold-standard Tinosorb S (Bemotrizinol) and the proprietary Mexoryl SX — delivers photostable, full-spectrum UVA/UVB protection that significantly outperforms most US-market equivalents. The preservative-free, fragrance-free, polyallergic-skin-tested formula sets a new benchmark for what a sensitised-skin SPF should look like. The 40 ml airless bottle is small and the price per ml is high, but the clinical credentials, the texture on oily-combination skin, and the uncompromising safety testing justify the investment — especially for those who have struggled to find an SPF they can tolerate. This is a French pharmacy staple for good reason.

Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
