Vitamin C Brightening Ampoule
Vitamin C Brightening Ampoule
Product Description
A daily-use K-Beauty brightening ampoule by CommonLabs that harnesses the power of 70% Hippophae Rhamnoides (Vitamin Tree / Sea Buckthorn) Water, a dual Vitamin C system (3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid derivative + pure Ascorbic Acid), and Niacinamide to gradually even skin tone, reduce dark spots, and deliver intense antioxidant protection โ all in a feather-light, non-sticky watery texture perfect for beginners and sensitive skin.
โจ Texture & Feel
70% Vitamin Tree (Sea Buckthorn) Water
Hippophae Rhamnoides Water forms the base of this ampoule โ rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, and antioxidants, it delivers intense skin-conditioning benefits from the very first ingredient.
Dual Vitamin C System
Combines 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (a stable, oil-soluble Vitamin C derivative) with pure Ascorbic Acid for brightening that minimises oxidation instability and irritation.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
Estimated at 1.5โ2.2%, Niacinamide fades pigmentation, supports the skin barrier, regulates sebum, and reduces pores โ working synergistically with the Vitamin C system.
14-Fruit Multi-Complex
Pineapple, apple, grape, kiwi, peach, strawberry, blackberry, and more supply AHA enzymes, antioxidants, and natural fruit acids to refine texture and amplify radiance.
Multi-Layer Hydration
Polyglutamic Acid, Trehalose, Saccharide Isomerate, and Saccharide Hydrolysate form a moisture-binding network that keeps skin plump and smoothly hydrated throughout the day.
Soothing Botanical Actives
Allantoin, Corallina Officinalis (red algae) extract, Curcuma Longa (turmeric), Ocimum Sanctum (holy basil), and Astaxanthin calm inflammation and reinforce antioxidant defence.
๐ก๏ธ Safety & Compatibility
No retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or unsafe chemical UV filters. The Vitamin C forms (3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbic Acid) and Niacinamide are considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always consult your doctor with specific concerns.
Contains Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate, a laurate ester that can feed Malassezia yeast and potentially trigger fungal acne in susceptible individuals. Avoid if you have active fungal acne or are highly FA-prone.
The formula is water-based with a low-comedogenic profile. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is rated 1/5; no highly comedogenic oils (coconut, palm, wheat germ) are present.
Free from ethanol/denatured alcohol. Dipropylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, and 1,2-Hexanediol are glycol-type solvents that do not strip or dry the skin barrier.
CommonLabs products are not tested on animals. The brand is K-beauty cruelty-free certified.
Limonene and Linalool are naturally occurring fragrance components (from Citrus Junos Peel Oil) listed on the EU allergen list. Highly fragrance-sensitive individuals should patch test before full application.
Multiple fruit extracts (pineapple, papaya enzymes, grape, kiwi) provide mild natural exfoliants. Use SPF during the day when using this product to protect freshly brightened skin.
Contains no oxybenzone or octinoxate (UV filters harmful to coral reefs). Suitable for eco-conscious users who travel to protected marine environments.
๐ฌ Ingredient Breakdown
๐ฟ Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Water ~70% Proven
The hero base ingredient comprising approximately 70% of this formula. Sea Buckthorn Water (Vitamin Tree Water) is extracted from the berries and leaves of Hippophae Rhamnoides โ one of the most nutrient-dense botanical sources known in cosmetic science. It is loaded with carotenoids (beta-carotene, lycopene), flavonoids, vitamin E tocopherols, and omega fatty acids that provide antioxidant defence, skin-conditioning, and anti-inflammatory effects at every application.
- Antioxidant Activity: Rich in flavonoids and carotenoids that neutralise free radicals and protect against UV-induced oxidative stress.
- Anti-Inflammatory: Isorhamnetin and quercetin derivatives soothe reactive and sensitised skin.
- Skin Conditioning: Natural omega-7 (palmitoleic acid) content supports the lipid barrier from the outside in.
- Clinical Backing: Designated as a functional brightening base in K-beauty formulations; CommonLabs has clinically confirmed improvement in skin tone with this ampoule.
โจ Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) ~1.5โ2.2% Proven
One of the most well-researched multitasking actives in modern skincare. At this estimated concentration it effectively supports the skin barrier via ceramide synthesis, regulates melanin transfer to keratinocytes (fading dark spots), reduces sebum secretion for oily skin types, and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory benefits for acne and rosacea. It is stable across a wide pH range and works synergistically with the Vitamin C derivatives in this formula.
- Brightening: Inhibits melanosome transfer; works alongside Vitamin C to fade hyperpigmentation with cumulative daily use.
- Barrier Support: Increases ceramide and free fatty acid levels in the stratum corneum, reducing transepidermal water loss.
- Anti-Aging: Proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin elasticity at 4โ5% concentrations; beneficial at lower doses for maintenance.
- Sebum Control: Clinically shown to reduce sebum excretion rate, beneficial for oily and combination skin types.
๐ 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C Derivative) ~2,499 ppm (0.25%) Promising
A stable, oil-soluble ether of Ascorbic Acid where the 3-hydroxyl group is protected by an ethyl group. This makes it significantly more stable than pure Vitamin C (does not oxidise as quickly), more skin-permeable, and gentler for sensitive skin. Once absorbed it is enzymatically converted to Ascorbic Acid within the skin. It can help reduce melanogenesis (dark spot formation) and provides antioxidant protection, though efficacy studies use concentrations of 2% and above โ meaning this formulation prioritises tolerability and daily layering over potency.
- Stability Advantage: Far more stable than L-Ascorbic Acid; does not turn orange/yellow with oxidation in the bottle.
- Brightening Mechanism: Inhibits tyrosinase activity to reduce melanin synthesis; works additively with Niacinamide.
- Penetration: Lipophilic nature allows better absorption through the skin's lipid bilayers compared to water-soluble pure Vitamin C.
๐ฌ Ascorbic Acid (Pure Vitamin C) ~0.15โ0.50% Stabiliser Role
Pure L-Ascorbic Acid is present in this formula at low concentration where, according to WIMJ's ingredient analysis, it primarily functions as a pH adjuster and antioxidant stabiliser for other ingredients rather than as a standalone active. It contributes to the overall antioxidant environment of the formula and helps preserve ingredient integrity.
- Antioxidant Synergy: Works with Sea Buckthorn Water, Astaxanthin, and fruit extracts to create a robust free-radical scavenging system.
- pH Adjustment: Helps maintain optimal pH for ingredient stability.
๐ Polyglutamic Acid ~0.15โ0.55% Proven
A powerful next-generation humectant derived from fermented soybeans. Polyglutamic acid holds up to 4ร more moisture than Hyaluronic Acid by weight, forms a moisture-locking film on the skin surface, and has been shown to inhibit hyaluronidase โ the enzyme that breaks down the skin's own hyaluronic acid โ thereby extending the skin's natural moisturisation effect.
- Moisture Retention: Attracts and binds water molecules at the skin surface and within deeper layers.
- Hyaluronidase Inhibition: Preserves the skin's endogenous hyaluronic acid, providing a long-term hydration advantage.
๐ 14-Fruit Multi-Complex Combined trace Promising
This ampoule features an extensive multi-fruit complex including Ananas Sativus (Pineapple), Pyrus Malus (Apple), Vitis Vinifera (Grape), Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi), Prunus Persica (Peach), Fragaria Vesca (Strawberry), Rubus Fruticosus (Blackberry), Vaccinium Myrtillus (Bilberry), Vaccinium Angustifolium (Blueberry), Vaccinium Vitis-Idaea (Lingonberry), Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry), Citrus Junos (Yuzu), Chaenomeles Sinensis (Chinese Quince), and Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Flower (Orange Blossom). Together these provide natural AHA enzymes, vitamin C co-factors, anthocyanins, and polyphenols that brighten, refine texture, and boost antioxidant capacity.
- Pineapple & Kiwi: Contain bromelain and actinidin enzymes that provide gentle exfoliating action to improve skin texture and radiance.
- Bilberry, Blueberry & Berry Complex: Rich in anthocyanins and polyphenols with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Grape Extract: Provides resveratrol and OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) for skin-protective antioxidant activity.
๐ชธ Astaxanthin Trace Proven
One of the most potent natural antioxidants known, derived from microalgae. Astaxanthin has been demonstrated to be 6,000ร stronger than Vitamin C and 550ร stronger than Vitamin E in certain free-radical neutralisation assays. It protects skin cells from UV-induced oxidative damage and supports collagen synthesis.
- Antioxidant Potency: Scavenges both singlet oxygen and free radicals simultaneously, providing superior photoprotection support.
- Anti-Aging: Shown in clinical studies to reduce fine lines, improve skin elasticity, and enhance skin texture with regular use.

๐ Where It Fits in Your Routine
Apply after toner on cleansed skin. Allow to fully absorb before layering serum or moisturizer. Always follow with SPF in the morning when using Vitamin C products.
๐ How to Use
Cleanse Thoroughly
Double-cleanse in the evening or use a gentle cleanser in the morning. Pat skin dry with a clean towel, leaving it slightly damp for better absorption.
Apply Toner (Optional)
Use a hydrating or pH-balancing toner first if it is part of your routine. This step is optional but can enhance the ampoule's penetration and spread.
Dispense 2โ4 Drops
Using the dropper, dispense 2โ4 drops of the ampoule into your palm or directly onto your face. A little goes a long way with ampoule-concentrate textures.
Press and Pat into Skin
Gently press the product along skin texture โ cheeks, forehead, chin, nose โ using outward pressing and light patting motions. Avoid rubbing which can cause pilling with subsequent layers.
Allow Full Absorption
Wait 20โ30 seconds for the watery formula to fully sink in. The skin should feel supple and refreshed, not tacky or wet, before applying the next product.
Follow with Moisturizer + SPF (AM)
Layer your usual moisturizer on top to seal in benefits. In the morning, always finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen โ Vitamin C actives make freshly treated skin more vulnerable to UV damage.
๐ค Who Is It For?
โ Perfect for you if:
- You are new to Vitamin C and want a gentle entry point
- Your skin is sensitive or reactive to high-potency L-Ascorbic Acid serums
- You want daily brightening without sticky or greasy residue
- You have oily, combination, or normal skin
- You want to maintain even skin tone and prevent future hyperpigmentation
- You love K-beauty layering routines with lightweight textures
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding and need a pregnancy-safe Vitamin C option
โ Consider alternatives if:
- You want a high-potency (10โ20%) L-Ascorbic Acid treatment for deep pigmentation
- You have active fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) โ contains Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate
- You are highly allergic to fragrance/citrus โ contains Limonene and Linalool
- You need significant anti-aging or wrinkle-reduction results quickly
- You prefer a richer, more emollient serum texture for very dry skin
๐ฏ Skin Type Compatibility
Ultra-lightweight watery formula absorbs instantly without adding any shine or clogging pores. Niacinamide actively regulates sebum production for an additional oil-control benefit.
Balances beautifully across zones โ hydrating dry areas while not overloading the T-zone. The multi-humectant system caters to differing moisture needs in one product.
An ideal everyday brightening ampoule for normal skin. Leaves a refreshed, supple, glowing finish that layers perfectly with any moisturizer or SPF.
The stable Vitamin C derivative is gentler than raw L-Ascorbic Acid. Allantoin and red algae extract soothe reactivity. Patch test first due to Limonene and Linalool content from Citrus Junos Peel Oil.
The multi-humectant system (Polyglutamic Acid, Trehalose, Glycerin) hydrates well, but very dry skin types will want a richer moisturizer on top. Works best as an ampoule layer rather than a standalone hydrator.
Low comedogenic rating and Niacinamide's anti-acne properties are positives. However, Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate is a laurate ester that may aggravate fungal acne in susceptible users. Suitable for regular hormonal acne, not fungal acne.

๐ฐ Budget-Friendly Alternatives (Dupes)
Similar K-beauty brightening philosophy with Vitamin C derivative (Yuzu extract as natural Vitamin C source) and Niacinamide. Slightly richer gel-cream texture but comparable lightweight brightening benefits. Good FA-safe alternative if fungal acne is a concern.
Covers the Niacinamide brightening and pore-refining aspect of CommonLabs Ampoule at a higher 10% concentration, making it more potent for oil control and spot fading. Lacks the Vitamin C, Sea Buckthorn Water, and extensive antioxidant fruit complex but is significantly cheaper and FA-safe.
If you want the Vitamin C potency this ampoule deliberately avoids, Cos De BAHA delivers 15% L-Ascorbic Acid at a fraction of the price of premium Vitamin C serums. Note: L-AA is less stable and more likely to irritate โ not a beginner product and not pregnancy-safe at high concentrations without physician guidance.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this ampoule is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It does not contain retinoids (vitamin A derivatives), salicylic acid at high concentrations, hydroquinone, or harmful chemical UV filters โ the common ingredients flagged during pregnancy. The active Vitamin C forms (3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and Ascorbic Acid) and Niacinamide are considered low-risk topical actives. As always, consult your OBGYN or dermatologist before making changes to your skincare routine during pregnancy.
No, this ampoule is not fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis) safe. It contains Polyglyceryl-10 Laurate โ a laurate ester emulsifier derived from lauric acid โ which is a fatty acid known to feed Malassezia yeast and can trigger or worsen fungal acne in susceptible individuals. If you are prone to fungal acne or have been diagnosed with malassezia folliculitis, consider an alternative such as The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc or a confirmed FA-safe Vitamin C serum.
Yes, with some considerations. Because the Vitamin C concentration in this ampoule is low and uses the stable derivative 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (rather than pure L-Ascorbic Acid), it is more compatible with other actives. You can layer it with niacinamide-containing products freely. With retinol, use this ampoule in the AM and retinol in the PM. With AHA/BHA exfoliants, avoid applying both in the same step if your skin is sensitive โ use them on alternate evenings. Do not use alongside another high-potency pure L-Ascorbic Acid product as this can cause irritation and redness without additional benefit.
This ampoule is best suited for oily, combination, and normal skin types. Its ultra-lightweight watery texture and Niacinamide content make it particularly effective for oily/combination skin. Dry skin types can use it but will need a richer moisturizer on top. Sensitive skin types can generally tolerate it well due to the gentle stable Vitamin C derivative, but should patch test first due to the presence of Limonene and Linalool from the Citrus Junos Peel Oil. It is not recommended for active fungal acne sufferers.
Immediate effects (hydration, refreshed glow, supple feel) appear from the first application. Visible skin tone improvements and radiance enhancement typically become noticeable after 2โ4 weeks of consistent daily use. Meaningful fading of dark spots and hyperpigmentation is generally observed after 4โ8 weeks. Because the Vitamin C concentration is low, this product is designed for gradual, cumulative brightening rather than rapid correction. It is ideal as a daily maintenance and prevention product. Patience and consistency are key โ pair it with daily SPF for best results.
Apply this ampoule as step 3 in your routine โ after cleansing and toning, but before heavier serums, essences, or moisturizers. As a general rule, layer water-based products from lightest to heaviest texture. In the morning routine: Cleanser โ Toner โ This Ampoule โ Moisturizer โ Sunscreen (SPF 30+ is essential when using any Vitamin C product). In the evening routine: Cleanser โ Toner โ This Ampoule โ Treatment Serum (if any) โ Night Moisturizer.
No, this ampoule has a low comedogenic rating of 1/5 and is very unlikely to clog pores. The formula is entirely water-based without heavy oils, waxes, or high-rating comedogenic ingredients. The only oil-derived ingredient is Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (coconut-derived, rated 1/5 comedogenicity) and Hydrogenated Lecithin (rated 0). Niacinamide actively helps reduce pore appearance over time. This product is suitable for pore-conscious and acne-prone skin (excluding fungal acne โ see FAQ above).
This ampoule has a PAO (Period After Opening) of 12 months. Using 2โ4 drops once or twice daily, a 30ml bottle typically lasts approximately 2โ4 months depending on how liberally it is applied. Store in a cool, dark place (or refrigerator) to maintain Vitamin C potency. If the formula turns noticeably dark orange or develops an unusual smell before 12 months, discard it โ these are signs the Ascorbic Acid has oxidised and the product has lost its brightening efficacy.
Verdict: The CommonLabs Vitamin C Brightening Ampoule is a thoughtfully formulated, beginner-friendly K-beauty brightening ampoule that stands out for its premium 70% Sea Buckthorn (Vitamin Tree) Water base โ a genuinely unique foundation ingredient packed with natural antioxidants. The dual Vitamin C system prioritises stability and gentleness over potency, making it an excellent daily maintenance product for those who previously found pure L-Ascorbic Acid serums too irritating or unstable. Paired with Niacinamide, Polyglutamic Acid, and an impressive 14-fruit antioxidant complex, it delivers consistent, cumulative brightening with a feather-light texture that oily and combination skin types will particularly love. The main trade-off is potency โ users with significant hyperpigmentation seeking fast, dramatic results should look elsewhere. But for everyday glow maintenance, prevention of new dark spots, and gentle tone correction โ particularly for sensitive, pregnancy, or Vitamin C-beginner skin โ this ampoule delivers real value in a clean, well-crafted formula.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
