Rare Microcitrus Australis (Round Lime) and Microcitrus Australasica (Finger Lime) from Australian subtropical rainforests provide natural AHAs for gentle exfoliation and a luminous glow.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEThe formula is free from retinoids, high-dose salicylic acid, and hydroquinone. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) is generally considered safe, but Pixi recommends consulting your physician before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Phenoxyethanol is present in low concentrations — most dermatologists consider it safe at cosmetic levels.
NOT considered fungal acne safe. The formula contains Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (a ferment), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Phospholipids, and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil — all of which can feed Malassezia yeast. Avoid if you are prone to fungal acne or pityrosporum folliculitis.
Alcohol-free and paraben-free formula with soothing Aloe Vera and Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Extract. Most users with sensitive skin tolerate it well. A patch test is recommended if skin is very reactive to citrus-derived ingredients or fragrance compounds from essential oil extracts.
Rated low-comedogenic overall. Glycine Soja Oil can rate 2-3 for some individuals, but is present in minimal concentration. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride is typically non-comedogenic (0-1). Suitable for most acne-prone skin types when fungal acne is not a concern.
Pixi Beauty does not test on animals and does not have third-party suppliers conduct animal testing on their behalf. The brand is committed to cruelty-free practices globally.
Products containing Ascorbic Acid can oxidise over time, especially in non-airtight packaging. Store in a cool, dark location and monitor for colour changes (the product may turn yellow/amber as Vitamin C oxidises). Use within 12 months of opening for best results.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSAscorbic Acid (Vitamin C) ~1–3%Proven
Pure L-Ascorbic Acid is the most bioavailable and researched form of Vitamin C in skincare. It directly inhibits melanin synthesis by blocking tyrosinase, stimulates collagen production, and provides potent antioxidant protection against UV-generated free radicals. It is the gold-standard brightening ingredient in cosmetic formulation.
- Brightening: Directly inhibits tyrosinase enzyme to reduce melanin production and fade dark spots
- Collagen synthesis: Required cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase enzymes critical to collagen formation
- Antioxidant: Neutralises reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by UV, pollution, and metabolic processes
- Stability: Stabilised by Ferulic Acid and Vitamin E in this formulation for improved efficacy
Ferulic Acid ~0.1–0.5%Proven
A plant-based phenolic antioxidant found naturally in cell walls of bran, oats, and many fruits. Ferulic Acid is most celebrated in skincare for its synergistic relationship with Vitamin C — a landmark 2005 study demonstrated that a combination of 15% Vitamin C + 1% Vitamin E + 0.5% Ferulic Acid doubled photoprotection and dramatically stabilised the otherwise unstable Ascorbic Acid.
- Vitamin C stabiliser: Extends the shelf life of Ascorbic Acid in formula by reducing oxidation rate
- Photoprotection: Independently absorbs UV and enhances SPF effect when combined with antioxidants
- Anti-aging: Reduces UV-induced erythema and fine line formation with regular use
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice ~2–5%Proven
Aloe Vera gel is one of the most extensively researched soothing ingredients in cosmetics. Rich in polysaccharides (acemannan), it provides immediate soothing relief, promotes wound healing, and delivers surface-level hydration. It is particularly valued for calming post-sun or post-exfoliation irritation.
- Soothing: Reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and calms redness and irritation
- Hydration: Humectant activity draws water to skin surface for immediate moisture boost
- Barrier support: Helps reinforce the skin's natural protective function
Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) ~0.1–0.5%Proven
The sodium salt of Hyaluronic Acid, capable of holding up to 1,000x its own weight in water. Sodium Hyaluronate has a smaller molecular weight than native HA, allowing for better skin penetration and deeper plumping action. It works as a powerful humectant to draw moisture into the epidermis.
- Deep hydration: Binds water at multiple skin layers including the epidermis and upper dermis
- Plumping: Temporarily reduces the appearance of fine lines by volumising the skin matrix
- Non-comedogenic: Rated 0, safe for all skin types including oily and acne-prone
Caffeine ~0.5–1%Promising
Caffeine is a methylxanthine alkaloid with well-documented antioxidant and vasoconstricting properties in skincare. It inhibits phosphodiesterase and promotes fat cell breakdown (lipolysis) when used topically, contributing to a de-puffing and energising effect. Studies also show it can reduce UV-induced skin damage.
- Antioxidant: Scavenges free radicals and offers some UV protection as a secondary mechanism
- De-puffing: Vasoconstriction reduces water retention around delicate skin areas
- Energising: Contributes to the product's "wake-up skin" effect cited in marketing
Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green Tea) ~0.1–0.5%Proven
Green tea extract is rich in polyphenols — particularly EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) — which is one of the most potent antioxidants in nature. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and photoprotective properties. Studies support its use in conditions such as rosacea, acne, and atopic dermatitis.
- Potent antioxidant: EGCG content provides strong free radical scavenging action
- Anti-inflammatory: Inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines, helping calm reactive skin
- Anti-aging: Protects collagen fibres from UV-induced degradation
Daucus Carota Sativa Root Extract & Beta-Carotene ~0.05–0.2%Promising
Carrot Root Extract delivers Beta-Carotene (Provitamin A), Vitamin E, and beneficial fatty acids. Beta-Carotene is a potent antioxidant that converts to Vitamin A (retinol) — supporting skin regeneration at a much gentler level than prescription retinoids. The oil also has notable skin-conditioning and emollient properties.
- Antioxidant: Beta-Carotene neutralises singlet oxygen free radicals with high efficiency
- Mild skin renewal: Provitamin A activity supports gentle cell turnover
- Skin conditioning: Fatty acid content improves texture and suppleness
Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate ~0.1–0.5%Promising
A natural probiotic preservative produced by fermenting radish root with Leuconostoc bacteria. It acts as a microbiome-supportive ingredient, strengthening the skin's natural bacterial balance and acting as a mild antimicrobial. It partially replaces traditional synthetic preservatives in many natural formulations.
- Probiotic effect: Supports healthy skin microbiome diversity and resilience
- Antimicrobial: Natural preservation activity extends product shelf life
- Barrier fortification: Strengthens skin's first line of defence against pathogens
Multi-Citrus Complex (Lemon, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Orange, Yuzu, Australian Limes) ~1–3% combinedPromising
A unique blend of six citrus-derived extracts: Citrus Limon Peel Extract, Citrus Grandis Fruit Extract, Citrus Nobilis Fruit Extract, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Peel Extract, Citrus Junos (Yuzu) Peel Extract, plus rare Australian limes (Microcitrus Australis and Microcitrus Australasica). Together they provide natural Vitamin C, citric acid (gentle exfoliation), and fragrance compounds.
- Natural AHAs: Citric acid from peel extracts provides mild resurfacing and brightening
- Antioxidant synergy: Polyphenols and flavonoids complement the Ascorbic Acid activity
- Australian limes: Finger lime and round lime are sources of rare citric-type AHAs unique to Australian botanical skincare
Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil (Tamanu Oil) ~0.1–0.3%Promising
Tamanu Oil is a green-yellow oil from the Polynesian islands with remarkable skin-regenerating properties. Rich in oleic and linoleic fatty acids, it promotes wound healing, offers antimicrobial activity, and contains significant delta-tocotrienol (Vitamin E) for antioxidant protection. It may also have modest SPF-boosting properties.
- Skin regeneration: Calophyllolide compound in the oil supports healing of damaged skin
- Antimicrobial: Shown effective against P. acnes bacteria in vitro studies
- Antioxidant: High tocotrienol content provides Vitamin E-type protection

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply after cleansing on clean, dry skin. Use morning and/or evening. Always follow with SPF 30+ in the morning when using Vitamin C products.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse Your Face
Begin with a gentle Pixi Beauty facial cleanser (or your preferred cleanser) to remove makeup, sunscreen, and impurities. Pat skin dry with a clean towel — skin should be clean but not stripped.
Apply the Vitamin-C Tonic
Saturate a cotton round with the tonic or pour a small amount into your palm. Sweep gently across face, neck, and décolletage. Avoid the eye area. For a more intensive treatment, pat directly into skin with fingertips after applying to a cotton pad.
Allow to Absorb
Wait approximately 20–30 seconds for the tonic to absorb and the skin to feel dry to the touch before proceeding to the next step. This ensures the active ingredients are properly absorbed.
Continue Your Routine
Follow with a targeted serum, then eye cream if used, then moisturiser. In the morning, always finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher — Vitamin C increases sun sensitivity and maximises UV protection efficacy when paired with sunscreen.
Frequency
Suitable for daily use, morning and/or evening. Begin by using once daily if you are new to Vitamin C products to allow skin to adjust. After 1–2 weeks, you can increase to twice daily as tolerated.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESCompletely alcohol-free and ultra-lightweight. Absorbs instantly without adding shine or greasiness. The Caffeine and Tea Tree extract help manage excess sebum and pore appearance.
Aloe Vera, Glycerin, and Sodium Hyaluronate deliver a solid hydration layer. However, dry skin types may need a richer moisturiser on top to lock in moisture. Works well as a prep step.
The lightweight watery format balances well across T-zone and drier cheek areas. Brightens evenly without exacerbating oiliness or dryness. An ideal toner for this skin type.
Alcohol-free and soothing, but citrus peel extracts and Peppermint Extract may cause mild tingling or irritation in very reactive skin. Start with every other day use. Patch test strongly recommended.
Vitamin C helps fade post-acne marks while Tea Tree and Probiotic extracts support skin balance. However, NOT safe for fungal acne due to ferments and fatty acids. Good for bacterial acne types.
This product was designed precisely for this concern. The multi-citrus Vitamin C complex with Ferulic Acid delivers visible brightening, glow enhancement, and even skin tone with consistent daily use.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESA Vitamin C-infused toner with 12 vitamin complexes including Niacinamide, Green Tea, and HA. Similar lightweight watery texture and brightening intent. Slightly more comprehensive vitamin profile. Available in Korean beauty retailers and online.
Higher declared Vitamin C derivative concentration (12% Ascorbyl Glucoside) at a fraction of the cost. Less stable and slower-acting than Ascorbic Acid, but more stable packaging. Lacks the botanical citrus complex and probiotic element. Better for targeted brightening correction.
Pure Ascorbic Acid powder to mix with your existing toner. Highly customisable concentration (0.5–2%). Zero botanical complex or soothing ingredients — purely functional brightening. More stable since it is dry until mixed. Excellent for those wanting to control their Vitamin C dose.

Frequently asked questions
FAQThe Pixi Vitamin-C Tonic does not contain retinoids, hydroquinone, or high-dose salicylic acid — the ingredients most commonly avoided in pregnancy. Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) is generally considered safe for topical use during pregnancy at cosmetic concentrations. However, the formula does contain Phenoxyethanol (a preservative used at low levels that most dermatologists consider safe topically) and Leuconostoc Ferment Filtrate. As with all skincare products during pregnancy, Pixi Beauty recommends consulting your physician or OB-GYN before use, as every pregnancy is different and your doctor can best advise based on your personal medical history.
No — the Pixi Vitamin-C Tonic is NOT considered fungal acne safe. The formula contains several ingredients known to feed Malassezia yeast: Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate (a ferment), Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil (a fatty acid-containing oil), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (medium-chain fatty acids), and Phospholipids. If you are prone to pityrosporum folliculitis (fungal acne) on your face, chest, or back, we recommend choosing a fungal acne-safe Vitamin C alternative such as The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution or a Niacinamide-based brightening toner instead.
With retinol: Use at separate times of day — Vitamin C in the morning and retinol in the evening. Both are highly active ingredients that work at different pH levels and can potentially cause sensitivity if used together. With AHAs/BHAs: Generally avoid layering Ascorbic Acid directly with high-concentration glycolic or salicylic acid products in the same step, as both work at acidic pH and the combination can increase irritation risk. You can use them at different times of day or on alternate days. With Niacinamide: Modern formulation science suggests that Vitamin C and Niacinamide can be used together at standard cosmetic concentrations without issue — the historical concern about forming niacin (causing flushing) is now considered minimal at room temperature cosmetic use. The pairing may actually provide complementary brightening and barrier benefits.
Pixi describes this as suitable for all skin types, and the lightweight watery formula works best for normal, oily, and combination skin. Dry skin types can also benefit but may need a richer moisturiser afterwards. It is particularly ideal for people with dull, uneven, or pigmented skin looking to add brightening and antioxidant protection to their routine. It is NOT recommended for those with fungal acne, and those with very sensitive or citrus-reactive skin should patch test first. The formula is alcohol-free, which makes it considerably gentler than many toners on the market.
Most users notice immediate skin freshness and a subtle glow after the first few uses. Visible brightening typically becomes apparent after 3–4 weeks of consistent daily use. For more significant reduction of hyperpigmentation, dark spots, or uneven skin tone, allow 8–12 weeks of daily use. Results will vary based on your skin tone, the depth of pigmentation, consistency of use, and whether you are pairing it with SPF (which is essential for Vitamin C products to be effective). Keep in mind that this is a toner-concentration Vitamin C product — for more intensive correction, consider pairing it with a higher-dose Vitamin C serum in the same routine.
Apply the Vitamin-C Tonic as the first leave-on product after cleansing — it is your toner step. The correct order is: Cleanser → Vitamin-C Tonic → Serum → Eye Cream → Moisturiser → SPF (morning only). In a double-cleanse routine, apply after your second cleanser. Because it is a low-viscosity water-based product, it should always be applied before thicker serums, oils, and creams to ensure proper penetration of its active ingredients. Always finish with SPF in the morning when using any Vitamin C product — sun protection is essential for brightening results and skin health.
The Pixi Vitamin-C Tonic has a low overall comedogenic rating of approximately 2/5. The majority of ingredients are non-comedogenic (Water, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Ascorbic Acid, Ferulic Acid etc. all rate 0-1). Glycine Soja Oil (Soybean Oil) can rate 2-3 for some individuals, but is present in a very low concentration. Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride typically rates 0-1. For most people with oily or acne-prone skin, this product will not clog pores. However, if you know you are highly sensitive to soybean-derived ingredients, be mindful. The formula is not tested as non-comedogenic by an independent laboratory, so individual responses may vary.
The Pixi Vitamin-C Tonic has a Period After Opening (PAO) of 12 months, as indicated by the open-jar symbol on the product packaging. This means the product is safe and effective to use for 12 months from the date you first open it. However, because Ascorbic Acid (pure Vitamin C) is particularly susceptible to oxidation, the brightening potency may begin to decline earlier if the product is exposed to frequent air, heat, or light. Signs of oxidation include the product turning yellow, orange, or brown. For best results, store in a cool, dark location, keep the cap tightly closed, and use within 6–9 months of opening for peak Vitamin C activity. The 100ml travel size is ideal for this reason — it tends to be used up before significant oxidation occurs.
Verdict: The Pixi Beauty Vitamin-C Tonic is a well-formulated, accessible brightening toner that delivers on its core promise of luminosity and skin prep. The combination of Ascorbic Acid with Ferulic Acid is science-backed and represents excellent value for a brightening toner at this price point. The multi-citrus botanical complex adds antioxidant depth, while Aloe Vera, Hyaluronic Acid, and Probiotic support hydration and barrier health. It works best as a daily glow-enhancing step for normal, oily, and combination skin types. The main limitations are its lack of fungal acne safety, the non-opaque packaging (which can lead to Vitamin C oxidation over time), and the undisclosed concentration of actives. For advanced pigmentation correction, pairing with a higher-strength Vitamin C serum is recommended. Overall, a lovely everyday brightening toner from a trusted cruelty-free British beauty brand.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
