๐ฌ Ingredient Breakdown
๐ง Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid (Blue HA) 0.20โ0.35% Proven
Laneige's proprietary Blue Hyaluronic Acid is processed via 10-step microfiltration and double fermentation with fucoidan from deep-sea Undaria algae. The result is low-molecular-weight HA (0.5 kDa) โ 2,000ร smaller than conventional HA โ enabling faster and deeper skin penetration for sustained, intense hydration and visible plumping.
- Mechanism: Low-MW HA penetrates into the epidermis, binds water at the cellular level, and increases skin turgor and elasticity.
- Clinical study: Based on 4-week instrumental testing on 32 women, the formula provided barrier repair within 30 minutes and added 10 moisture layers to the stratum corneum.
- Duration: Up to 120 hours of continuous barrier-boosting hydration (tested on forearm).
๐งด Glycerin 3.00โ3.60% Proven
A powerhouse humectant naturally present in healthy skin. Glycerin draws moisture from deeper dermal layers and the environment to the skin's surface, maintaining hydration and supporting barrier integrity. Research from 2016 found glycerin to be more effective as a humectant than AHAs and conventional hyaluronic acid at equivalent concentrations.
- Function: Humectant โ attracts and binds water to the skin surface.
- Barrier benefit: Hydrated skin improves barrier function, reducing sensitivity to irritants.
- Safety: Completely safe; comedogenic rating 0/5. Suitable for all skin types including acne-prone.
๐ก๏ธ Ceramide AP & Ceramide NP 0.25โ0.45% Proven
Two distinct ceramide subtypes that directly mirror the skin's natural lipid composition. Ceramide AP (alpha-hydroxy acid-based) and Ceramide NP (non-hydroxy fatty acid-based) work synergistically to fill intercellular gaps in the stratum corneum, dramatically reducing TEWL and restoring the moisture barrier in compromised and eczema-prone skin.
- Barrier repair: Ceramides make up approximately 50% of the skin's lipid barrier โ topical replenishment directly strengthens it.
- TEWL reduction: Clinical evidence supports ceramide-containing formulas reducing transepidermal water loss by up to 30%.
- Eczema: Ceramide-rich moisturizers are a first-line recommendation by dermatologists for atopic dermatitis management.
๐ฟ Squalane 1โ3% Proven
Plant-derived (typically from sugarcane or olive) hydrogenated squalene that is molecularly identical to skin's own squalane. Acts as a lightweight occlusive emollient, locking in moisture without clogging pores. Has demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties alongside excellent skin-compatibility even for oily and acne-prone skin.
- Comedogenic rating: 1/5 โ very low pore-clogging risk.
- Mimics sebum: Chemically resembles the skin's natural sebum, making it exceptionally well-tolerated.
- Stability: Unlike squalene, squalane is fully stable and does not oxidize, making it safer for topical use.
๐ซ Beta-Glucan 0.10โ0.25% Proven
A naturally occurring polysaccharide found in oat kernels and yeast. Beta-Glucan is a potent humectant and skin-calming active with well-documented anti-inflammatory properties. It activates skin repair pathways, reduces redness and irritation, and provides long-lasting moisturization comparable in some studies to hyaluronic acid.
- Anti-inflammatory: Activates skin's beta-glucan receptors (Dectin-1), triggering anti-inflammatory cascades and wound-healing pathways.
- Humectancy: Studies show comparable or superior hydration performance versus standard HA at equivalent concentrations.
- Ideal for: Sensitive, redness-prone, reactive, and eczema-prone skin.
๐งฌ Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate 0.10โ0.30% Promising
A fermentation-derived postbiotic ingredient produced by breaking down Lactobacillus bacteria. Contributes to the skin's natural microbiome balance, offers antimicrobial peptide properties, and provides soothing and anti-aging benefits. Rich in amino acids and short-chain fatty acids that support barrier function.
- Microbiome support: Postbiotic lysates help maintain a balanced skin microbiome, reducing inflammation-driven sensitivity.
- FA safety note: Contains fatty acid derivatives that may feed Malassezia yeast โ not recommended for fungal acne.
๐ Undaria Pinnatifida Extract (Brown Seaweed) 0.05โ0.15% Proven
An extract from edible brown seaweed (wakame) that is rich in fucoidan sulfated polysaccharides. This is the very ingredient used to ferment Laneige's Blue Hyaluronic Acid. Topically, it delivers antioxidant protection, strengthens the barrier, and improves skin hydration and smoothness.
- Fucoidan: Sulfated polysaccharides with demonstrated skin-protective and moisturizing properties in clinical literature.
- Antioxidant: Protects against UV-induced oxidative stress and premature aging.
๐ป Tocopherol (Vitamin E) 0.05โ0.20% Proven
A fat-soluble antioxidant that protects skin lipids and the moisture barrier from oxidative damage caused by free radicals and environmental stressors (UV, pollution). Works synergistically with Vitamin C (if applied before) and helps stabilize other active ingredients in the formula.
- Antioxidant protection: Neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) that degrade collagen and lipid barriers.
- Emollient: Secondary moisturizing effect, improving skin softness and texture.
๐ฟ Allantoin 0.05โ0.20% Proven
A naturally occurring compound (synthetically produced for cosmetics for purity) with well-documented soothing, wound-healing, and keratolytic properties. Allantoin is a cornerstone ingredient for sensitised and irritated skin โ it promotes healthy skin cell turnover, softens rough texture, and calms redness.
- Wound-healing: Higher concentrations shown to accelerate tissue repair; cosmetic concentrations provide gentle keratolytic and soothing effects.
- Rosacea support: One study found low-MW hyaluronic acid combined with allantoin effective for rosacea management.
๐งช Sucrose Polystearate 0.50โ1.50% Promising
A sugar-based emulsifier derived from sucrose and stearic acid. Creates the product's distinctive rich, balm-like texture while helping the water and oil phases blend smoothly. Contributes to the occlusive feel without heavy greasiness.
- Texture role: Provides the characteristic balm-cream consistency that differentiates the Intensive from the Cream variant.
- FA caution: Contains stearic acid ester โ may not be suitable for Malassezia-prone skin.

๐ Where It Fits in Your Routine
Apply AM and PM as the final moisturizing step, after toner and serum have fully absorbed. In the morning, follow with SPF. At night, this can be the last step or layered under a sleeping mask for extra occlusion on very dry nights.
๐ How to Use
Cleanse & Prep
Start with clean, dry skin. Use a gentle hydrating cleanser. Apply toner and allow it to fully absorb (30โ60 seconds) before proceeding.
Apply Serum (Optional)
If using a serum or essence (Hyaluronic Acid serum, Niacinamide, Vitamin C, or Peptide serum), apply first and allow to absorb before moisturizing.
Dispense a Pea-to-Pearl Size Amount
Scoop approximately a pea-sized amount (0.3โ0.5 mL) for the entire face. The rich balm-cream formula is highly concentrated โ less is more. Warm between fingertips first for easier application.
Press & Smooth Onto Face
Using gentle pressing motions, apply evenly across the face and neck, starting from the center and working outward. Avoid harsh rubbing โ pressing encourages better absorption.
Morning: Finish with SPF
Always follow with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen in the AM. Allow the moisturizer 60 seconds to set before applying sunscreen for best layering results.
Use AM & PM Daily
For best results, use consistently twice daily. Skin barrier restoration and hydration improvement are cumulative benefits โ expect visible results within 2โ4 weeks of regular use.
๐ค Who Is It For?
โ Perfect for you if:
- You have severely dry, flaky, or tight skin that needs rich hydration
- Your skin is sensitive, reactive, or eczema-prone
- You live in a dry or cold climate
- Your barrier is compromised from over-exfoliation or retinol use
- You want a fragrance-minimal, dermatologist-tested K-beauty moisturizer
- You're pregnant or breastfeeding and need a safe, rich moisturizer
- You seek long-lasting, clinically validated hydration (up to 120 hours)
โ Consider alternatives if:
- You have oily or combination skin (try the Gel Moisturizer variant instead)
- You are managing active fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis)
- You are strictly fragrance-free due to severe contact dermatitis
- You prefer a matte, non-dewy finish for daytime wear
- You need heavy-duty occlusives like petrolatum or shea butter
- You are on a very tight skincare budget (dupes available โ see below)
๐ฏ Skin Type Compatibility
Purpose-built for this skin type. The rich balm-cream texture, dual ceramides, squalane, and 120-hour hydration claim make it one of the best K-beauty options for severely dry skin.
Dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, and eczema-prone skin suitable. Ceramides, Allantoin, and Beta-Glucan actively soothe redness and calm reactive skin. Patch test for fragrance sensitivity.
Works well, especially in cooler or drier conditions. May feel slightly rich in warm, humid climates. Consider the Cream variant for year-round versatility.
Can be used on drier areas of combination skin or as a nighttime treatment. The rich consistency may be too heavy on oily zones. The Cream or Gel variant is better for daily all-over use on combination skin.
Too rich and occlusive for oily skin types. The balm-cream formula will likely feel heavy and may increase shine. The Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer is specifically designed for oily skin.
Low comedogenic rating (2/5) and no pore-clogging oils. Suitable for non-fungal acne-prone skin. However, avoid if Malassezia (fungal acne) is a concern โ see FA safety note above.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this moisturizer is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It does not contain retinoids (including retinol or retinyl palmitate), salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreen agents (such as oxybenzone) โ the primary ingredients typically flagged as unsafe during pregnancy. The formula contains Parfum (fragrance) at less than 1%; while the overall formulation is low-risk, highly fragrance-sensitive individuals or those with a history of contact dermatitis to fragrance may wish to patch test or consult their OB/GYN before regular use. Ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, Squalane, Glycerin, Beta-Glucan, and Tocopherol are all considered safe for pregnant and breastfeeding skin.
No, this product is not considered safe for those with active fungal acne (Malassezia folliculitis / pityrosporum folliculitis). The formula contains several ingredients known to feed Malassezia yeast, including: Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate (fermented ingredient), Squalane (a lipid that Malassezia metabolizes), Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Arachidic Acid (fatty acids), Caprylic/Capric/Myristic/Stearic Triglyceride (fatty acid ester), and Sucrose Polystearate (fatty acid ester). If you are managing active fungal acne, consider the La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer or CeraVe Moisturizing Cream as FA-safe alternatives with strong barrier repair credentials.
Yes, with some guidance: Vitamin C & Niacinamide: Apply your Vitamin C or Niacinamide serum first, allow it to absorb for 60 seconds, then follow with this moisturizer as the final step. This is an ideal pairing โ the moisturizer seals and protects actives. AHA/BHA (Glycolic, Lactic, Salicylic Acid): Apply the exfoliant first, allow to fully absorb (5โ10 minutes), then layer this moisturizer on top. The ceramides and Allantoin help buffer post-exfoliation sensitivity. Retinol: This moisturizer does not contain retinol, so it can be layered safely. Apply retinol serum first, allow to absorb, then apply this moisturizer. The rich ceramide formula is especially helpful for reducing retinol-induced dryness and irritation. Alternatively, the "Retinol Sandwich" method (moisturizer โ retinol โ moisturizer) works well for sensitive skin.
This moisturizer was specifically formulated for severely dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin types. It is also excellent for normal skin in dry or cold climates and as a nighttime barrier repair treatment for skin recovering from over-exfoliation or retinol use. It is not recommended for oily or combination skin โ those skin types should choose the Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Gel Moisturizer instead. For normal-to-dry skin that doesn't need the most intensive hydration, the Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturizer (the middle variant) is a better match. The Intensive is the richest of the three Water Bank moisturizer options in the line.
Immediate comfort and softness improvements are noticeable within minutes of first application. Instrumental testing showed barrier repair beginning within 30 minutes. Visible skin smoothness, reduced flakiness, and more even skin tone typically appear within 3โ7 days of consistent twice-daily use. Meaningful improvements in skin elasticity, firmness, and long-term barrier resilience are clinically demonstrated at 4 weeks โ the timeframe used in Laneige's clinical study on 32 participants. For eczema-prone skin, redness and reactivity reduction typically begins within 1โ2 weeks of regular use.
This moisturizer is applied as the final moisturizing step in your routine, after cleansing, toning, essence, and any serums or treatment products. In the AM routine: Cleanser โ Toner โ Essence (optional) โ Serum โ This Moisturizer โ SPF. In the PM routine: Cleanser โ Toner โ Essence (optional) โ Serum/Treatment โ This Moisturizer. On nights when extra nourishment is needed, you can apply a sleeping mask on top of this moisturizer for an intensified overnight barrier treatment. Always apply from thinnest to thickest consistency โ this rich balm-cream goes last among your leave-on skincare products.
The overall comedogenic rating of this formula is estimated at 2/5 (low risk). Key emollients include Squalane (1/5), Glycerin (0/5), Ceramide AP and NP (0/5), and Tocopherol (2/5). Cetyl Alcohol and Stearyl Dimethicone rate 2/5 individually but are used in small concentrations as texture agents. The formula does not contain high-comedogenic oils (coconut oil, cocoa butter, wheat germ oil). For reference, Stearic and Palmitic Acids can have a mild comedogenic effect in some individuals. Most users with non-oily, mildly acne-prone skin tolerate this product well. Those with severely acne-prone or oily skin should consider the lighter Gel Moisturizer variant to minimise pore congestion risk.
The Period After Opening (PAO) for this moisturizer is 12 months โ indicated by the open-jar symbol (12M) on the packaging. A 50 mL jar used twice daily (morning and evening), applying a pea-to-pearl sized amount per application, typically lasts 2โ3 months for single users. The refill pod system means you only need to replace the inner pod rather than the full outer jar, which also extends the practical lifespan of the product system. Store in a cool, dry place and avoid introducing moisture or water into the jar to maximise freshness and efficacy.
Verdict: The Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Intensive Moisturizer is an exceptional K-beauty moisturizer for severely dry, sensitive, and eczema-prone skin. Its dual-ceramide barrier repair formula, proprietary micro-sized Blue Hyaluronic Acid technology, clinically validated 120-hour hydration claim, and thoughtfully curated ingredients (Squalane, Beta-Glucan, Allantoin, Tocopherol, Undaria Pinnatifida Extract) make it one of the most comprehensive hydrating moisturizers in the mid-premium market at $38. It is held back only by the presence of fragrance (limiting its appeal for strictly fragrance-reactive users), its unsuitability for fungal acne-prone skin, and its rich texture that isn't compatible with oily or combination skin. For its intended audience โ very dry, sensitive, and barrier-compromised skin โ it delivers on every promise. Highly recommended for dry and eczema-prone skin types, and a strong competitor to French pharmacy and high-end alternatives at its price point.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
