Perfume batch code checker

Type the house and the batch code from the bottom of the bottle or the box. We decode when the bottle was made, how old it is, and how long it should keep. Works for perfume, eau de toilette, cologne and attar.

Perfume batch codes: common questions

Where is the batch code on a perfume?

On the bottom of the bottle (etched or printed on the glass, or on a small sticker) and on the box, usually on the bottom flap or the back. It is a short code of 4 to 10 letters and numbers, not the long barcode. On a genuine bottle the code on the box and on the bottle are the same.

Does perfume expire?

Yes, slowly. Unopened and kept cool and dark, most perfumes keep 3 to 5 years from production, often longer; citrus and green top notes fade first. Once opened, most brands give 24 to 36 months (the PAO open-jar symbol). A sharp, sour or metallic opening and a darker colour mean it has turned.

How do I read a perfume batch code?

Enter it in the checker above with the house name. Most houses encode the production date as a year letter or digit plus a day or month, but every house uses its own format. Where we cannot read a house yet, its page gives the official shelf life and how to judge the bottle yourself.

Does a matching batch code prove my perfume is original?

Not on its own. A code that decodes to a sensible date and is the same on the box and the bottle is a good sign, but counterfeiters copy real codes from genuine bottles. Buy from the house or an authorised retailer, and compare the box print, cellophane, sprayer and cap fit with a bottle you know is genuine.

Why does my new bottle smell different from the last one?

Batches differ. Natural materials such as citrus oils, rose and vetiver change from harvest to harvest, and houses reformulate when an ingredient is restricted or replaced. The batch code tells you when each bottle was made, so you can compare the two.

Can I check a perfume expiry date from the barcode?

No. The barcode identifies the product, not the bottle: every bottle of that perfume carries the same barcode. The production date is in the batch code.
