Paste an ingredient list — or pick a product — and see which ingredients are rated likely to clog pores (comedogenic 2+ on the 0–5 scale).
Every ingredient is matched to our database of published comedogenic ratings — how likely it is to block pores, from 0 to 5 — and anything rated 2 or more is flagged.
Ratings come from tests of single ingredients at high doses; in a finished formula the amount and the mix change the picture. Use the result to shortlist products, then patch-test.
76 ingredients we hold a published rating of 2 or more for, highest first.
Comedogenic means likely to block pores and form comedones — the blackheads and whiteheads that can turn into breakouts. Each ingredient gets a rating from 0 (does not clog) to 5 (clogs severely), measured in classic lab tests in which the pure ingredient was applied repeatedly and the blocked follicles counted.
It looks up every ingredient in our database of published comedogenic ratings and flags anything rated 2 or more: 2 is mild, 3 is moderate, 4–5 is high. Ingredients without a rating are not flagged.
Yes — coconut oil (Cocos Nucifera Oil) is rated 4 out of 5, one of the highest of common skincare oils. Cocoa butter is rated 4 out of 5.
In our data jojoba seed oil is rated 0 out of 5 and olive fruit oil 0 out of 5; squalane is 1 out of 5. Skin still varies — patch-test anything new on a small area.
They are a useful warning, not a verdict. The tests used pure ingredients at high doses, while a finished product contains small amounts in a mix — so a flagged ingredient low on the list matters less than one near the top, and some people react while others never do.
Not much on its own: in the US the claim is not regulated and there is no standard test behind it. Checking the actual ingredient list is the more reliable way.
