Licochalcone A Soothing Complex

Extracted from licorice root (Glycyrrhiza Inflata), this anti-inflammatory active calms redness, itching, and irritation associated with atopic dermatitis and eczema flare-ups.

Ceramide NP Barrier Repair

Skin-identical ceramides replenish the compromised lipid barrier found in atopic skin, locking in moisture and protecting against environmental triggers.

Evening Primrose Oil (GLA-Rich)

Rich in gamma-linolenic acid (7–12%), Evening Primrose Oil supports skin barrier function and helps reduce inflammation and dryness in eczema-prone skin.

Multi-Level Hydration

Glycerin attracts water as a humectant, while Grape Seed Oil and Dimethicone form a protective layer to prevent transepidermal water loss for lasting comfort.

02

Safety & compatibility

SAFE
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe

Contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, or chemical sunscreens. All ingredients are considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Not Fungal Acne (Malassezia) Safe

Contains fatty acid-rich oils (Evening Primrose Oil, Grape Seed Oil) and esters (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glyceryl Stearate) that may feed Malassezia yeast. Not recommended for fungal acne.

Low Comedogenic Risk (2/5)

Most ingredients have low comedogenic ratings. Evening Primrose Oil rates 2–3, but the overall formula is designed for sensitive, reactive skin and is unlikely to clog pores for most users.

Safe for Babies & Children

Suitable for adults, children, and babies from three months old. Fragrance-free and dermatologically tested for very sensitive skin.

Retinol & Active Compatible

No known interactions with retinol, vitamin C, AHA, or BHA. Can be layered with prescription eczema treatments as advised by your dermatologist.

No SPF Protection

This cream does not contain sun protection. Always apply a separate sunscreen in the morning when your face will be exposed to sunlight.

Ingredient breakdown

INGREDIENTS

Licochalcone A (Glycyrrhiza Inflata Root Extract)Proven

A powerful anti-inflammatory flavonoid extracted from Chinese licorice root. Eucerin's signature soothing active ingredient used across their sensitive skin lines to calm redness, itching, and irritation.

  • Mechanism: Inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory mediators and reduces oxidative stress in skin cells
  • Clinical: Eucerin in-use study (131 participants, 4 weeks) showed clinically significant reduction in dryness and itching
  • Benefit: Soothes atopic dermatitis symptoms during both flare-ups and non-acute phases
One of the most well-researched botanical anti-inflammatory ingredients in dermatological skincare. Safe for all ages including infants.

Ceramide NP 0.4–0.9%Proven

A skin-identical lipid that naturally occurs in the upper layer of the skin. Essential for maintaining the skin barrier function and preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

  • Function: Replenishes depleted ceramides in atopic skin, which typically has 30–50% lower ceramide levels than healthy skin
  • Research: Peer-reviewed studies confirm ceramide-containing moisturizers significantly improve barrier function in atopic dermatitis
  • Synergy: Works alongside the oil-based emollients to create a comprehensive barrier repair system

Glycerin 5–10%Proven

One of the most effective and well-studied humectant ingredients in skincare. Naturally present in human skin, it draws moisture from the environment and deeper skin layers to hydrate the surface.

  • Efficacy: A 2016 study found glycerin more effective as a humectant than hyaluronic acid and AHAs
  • Safety: Comedogenic rating 0, irritancy 0 — safe for all skin types including the most reactive
  • Barrier: Helps maintain skin lipids in a healthy liquid crystal state, supporting overall barrier integrity

Oenothera Biennis (Evening Primrose) Oil 3–4.4%Proven

A botanical oil uniquely rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, 7–12%), a fatty acid that is often deficient in people with atopic dermatitis. Also contains linoleic acid (66–76%) for barrier repair.

  • Research: Well-studied since the 1980s for atopic dermatitis, with evidence supporting both oral and topical use
  • GLA Benefit: Gamma-linolenic acid helps reduce inflammation and supports the skin's natural repair processes
  • Barrier: High linoleic acid content helps reinforce the skin's lipid matrix
Comedogenic rating 2–3. Not suitable for fungal acne due to fatty acid content. May be comedogenic for very oily or acne-prone skin types.

Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil 3.8–5.7%Promising

A light emollient oil rich in antioxidant polyphenols, linoleic acid (55–77%), and vitamin E. Softens skin and provides protective antioxidant benefits without a heavy feel.

  • Composition: High linoleic-to-oleic acid ratio makes it lighter and less pore-clogging than many plant oils
  • Antioxidant: Polyphenol content provides protection against free radical damage and environmental stress

Tocopherol (Vitamin E) + Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C)Proven

A stabilizing antioxidant duo. Tocopherol protects the formula and skin from oxidative damage, while Ascorbyl Palmitate is an oil-soluble form of vitamin C that provides additional antioxidant protection.

  • Stability: Protects the sensitive oils in the formula (Evening Primrose, Grape Seed) from oxidation
  • Skin benefit: Provides mild antioxidant defense at the skin surface

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes. Eucerin AtoControl Face Care Cream is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens, or any other ingredients flagged as unsafe during pregnancy. The formula is fragrance-free and gentle enough for babies from 3 months old, making it one of the safest face cream options for expectant and nursing mothers.

No. This cream is not fungal acne safe. It contains several ingredients that can feed Malassezia yeast, including Evening Primrose Oil (Oenothera Biennis Oil), Grape Seed Oil (Vitis Vinifera Seed Oil), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, and Glyceryl Stearate. If you have fungal acne or pityrosporum folliculitis, consider alternatives like Eucerin UltraSENSITIVE Soothing Care or a fungal acne-safe moisturizer.

Yes. Eucerin AtoControl Face Care Cream has no known interactions with retinol, vitamin C serums, AHAs, or BHAs. It can actually help buffer the irritation these active ingredients may cause, especially on sensitive or atopic skin. Apply your active treatment first, wait a few minutes for it to absorb, then layer this cream on top. If using prescription topical eczema treatments, apply the medication first as directed by your dermatologist.

This cream is best suited for dry, very dry, sensitive, and atopic dermatitis-prone skin. It excels at soothing eczema-related facial redness, itching, and tightness. It also works well for normal skin that needs extra hydration. It is not ideal for oily, acne-prone, or fungal acne-prone skin types, as the plant oils and esters may be too rich or potentially triggering.

You should feel immediate relief from dryness and tightness upon first application. Within 1–2 weeks of daily use, most users notice a reduction in redness and itching. Significant barrier improvement and reduced flare-up frequency typically become apparent after 2–4 weeks of consistent use, as confirmed in Eucerin's clinical study with 131 participants over 4 weeks.

Apply after cleansing and any toners or serums, but before sunscreen (AM) or occlusive/sleeping mask (PM). The routine order is: Cleanser → Toner → Serum → This Cream → Sunscreen (morning). It can also be applied as often as needed throughout the day for extra comfort. If using prescription eczema medication, apply the medication first, then layer this cream on top.

The overall comedogenic risk is low (rated 2/5). While Evening Primrose Oil has a comedogenic rating of 2–3, and Cetyl Alcohol rates 2, the formula is designed for sensitive, reactive skin and has been dermatologically tested. Most users with dry or sensitive skin will not experience pore clogging. However, if you have very oily or acne-prone skin, this cream may not be the best choice.

The Period After Opening (PAO) is 12 months. Once opened, the cream should be used within one year for optimal effectiveness and safety. The squeeze tube packaging minimizes air exposure, helping to preserve the sensitive plant oils and antioxidants. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maximize shelf life.

— Skincarisma verdict
4.2 / 5 ★★★★☆

Verdict: Eucerin AtoControl Face Care Cream is a well-formulated, clinically proven moisturizer that delivers exactly what it promises — soothing relief and barrier repair for atopic, eczema-prone facial skin. The Licochalcone A and Ceramide NP combination is backed by solid research, and the fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formula makes it safe for virtually everyone, including pregnant women and babies. Its main limitations are the small 50ml size, lack of SPF, and unsuitability for fungal acne. For dry and sensitive skin types seeking a reliable, dermatologist-grade daily cream, it remains one of the best pharmacy options available.

lightbulb What are Notable Effects & Ingredients?

Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.

We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.

lightbulb What is the Ingredient Safety Breakdown?

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.

muscle Pro Tip Alert!

EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
