SENSORY3 Essential Ceramides
Ceramide NP, AP and EOP — three naturally occurring ceramides that make up 50% of your skin's lipid barrier. This complex reinforces the skin's protective shield to lock in hydration and keep irritants out.
Hyaluronic Acid
Sodium Hyaluronate (the salt form of HA) draws moisture from the environment into skin and holds up to 1,000× its weight in water, providing instant plumping and long-lasting deep hydration.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
A multitasking powerhouse that minimises pores, reduces excess oil, brightens uneven skin tone, calms redness and boosts the skin's natural barrier integrity — suitable for all skin types.
Patented MVE® Technology
CeraVe's unique MultiVesicular Emulsion technology releases moisturising ingredients gradually throughout the day, providing controlled and continuous hydration for up to 24 hours after application.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
A lightweight emollient derived from coconut oil that softens and smooths skin without a greasy feel. It enhances spreadability and improves the formula's skin-feel, making the lotion easy to apply evenly.
Cholesterol + Phytosphingosine
These two skin-identical lipids work alongside ceramides to complete the natural barrier repair complex, supporting the skin's lipid matrix for a healthier, more resilient complexion over time.
Safety & compatibility
SAFEContains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone or chemical UV filters. The formula relies on well-tolerated humectants and ceramides, making it safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Always consult your healthcare provider.
The formula does not contain fermented ingredients or problematic fatty acid esters in concentrations known to feed Malassezia yeast. Widely considered safe for those prone to fungal acne based on ingredient analysis.
Dermatologist-tested as non-comedogenic. The lightweight water-based formula is unlikely to block pores. Key emollients score low on comedogenicity scales — ideal for acne-prone skin types.
Completely free of added fragrances, essential oils, and the 26 EU-listed allergens. Suitable for reactive, eczema-prone and rosacea skin. Dermatologically tested for sensitive skin compatibility.
Preserved with Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol and Ethylhexylglycerin — a modern, well-tolerated preservation system with an excellent safety record. No methylparaben or propylparaben present.
Works well layered with retinol, vitamin C, AHA/BHA, benzoyl peroxide and niacinamide serums. The ceramide barrier supports skin recovery when using strong chemical exfoliants. Apply after actives.
The National Eczema Association (NEA) has granted CeraVe its Seal of Acceptance. The fragrance-free, gentle formula is recognised as safe for use on eczematous and rosacea-affected skin.
Entirely free from added plant oils, mineral oil and petrolatum. Moisture is delivered through ceramides, humectants and emollients, making this suitable for those who break out from oil-based products.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSCeramide Complex (NP, AP & EOP) ~0.5–1%Proven
Ceramides are lipid molecules that form the structural "mortar" between skin cells, making up approximately 50% of the skin's lipid barrier. CeraVe uses three distinct types — Ceramide NP (most abundant in healthy skin), Ceramide AP (anti-aging properties), and Ceramide EOP (omega-esterified, longest chain) — delivered within the patented MVE technology to maximise integration into the barrier.
- Skin barrier repair: Clinical studies show topical ceramide application significantly restores barrier function in atopic dermatitis patients within 4 weeks of twice-daily use.
- TEWL reduction: The ceramide complex measurably reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), keeping skin hydrated and protected from environmental aggressors.
- Skin-identical: These ceramides match the three most critical types naturally found in human stratum corneum, ensuring high biocompatibility.
Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) ~4–5%Proven
Niacinamide is one of the most evidence-backed multitasking actives in skincare. At concentrations of 4–5%, it delivers barrier-strengthening, brightening and anti-inflammatory effects simultaneously, making it invaluable for nearly every skin type and concern.
- Pore minimisation: A 12-week clinical study showed 5% niacinamide significantly reduced the appearance of enlarged pores vs placebo.
- Hyperpigmentation: Inhibits melanosome transfer between melanocytes and keratinocytes, reducing visible dark spots and uneven skin tone over 4–8 weeks.
- Sebum regulation: Reduces sebum production in oily skin types by up to 25% in controlled studies — beneficial for acne-prone skin.
- Anti-aging: Stimulates collagen synthesis and reduces the appearance of fine lines with consistent long-term use.
Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid) ~0.1–0.5%Proven
Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid — smaller molecular weight than pure HA, enabling deeper penetration into the upper skin layers. It is a powerful humectant that binds and retains moisture, providing immediate plumping and lasting hydration.
- Moisture retention: Can hold up to 1,000× its weight in water, creating a reservoir of moisture within the skin.
- Wound healing: Research confirms hyaluronic acid plays a critical role in skin repair and regeneration processes.
- Skin density: Consistent use improves skin firmness and elasticity, measurable via cutometry studies after 8 weeks.
Glycerin ~5–8%Proven
As the second ingredient after water, glycerin is the primary humectant in this formula. It attracts moisture from both the dermis and the environment, maintains the skin's water-holding capacity and supports barrier function without any occlusive heaviness.
- Humectant efficacy: Studies show glycerin is more effective than petrolatum at maintaining skin hydration over 8 hours of wear.
- Barrier support: Enhances tight junction protein expression and lamellar body secretion, directly strengthening barrier function.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride ~3–5%Proven
Derived from coconut oil, this medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) serves as a lightweight emollient and carrier oil. It spreads easily, improves the sensory profile of the lotion and softens skin without the greasiness associated with longer-chain oils.
- Comedogenicity: Rated 0–1/5 on comedogenicity scales — much safer for acne-prone skin than conventional coconut oil.
- Skin feel: Provides a silky, dry skin-feel that improves formula spreadability and elegance without creating a greasy residue.
Phytosphingosine + Cholesterol tracePromising
These two skin-identical lipids work as the "helper" components of the barrier repair complex. Phytosphingosine is a precursor to ceramides and stimulates their natural synthesis; cholesterol completes the critical lipid ratio required for a fully functional epidermal barrier.
- Barrier repair: Together with ceramides, they reconstitute the ideal lipid lamellar structure of the stratum corneum.
- Anti-inflammatory: Phytosphingosine has documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity, helping to calm sensitised skin.

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEApply after all water-based serums and actives. In your AM routine, always finish with a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen. This moisturiser can be used as the final step in your PM routine.
How to use
HOW TO USECleanse Your Face
Start with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser to remove impurities, excess oil and sunscreen. Pat dry with a clean towel, leaving skin slightly damp for better absorption of the moisturiser.
Apply Any Serums or Actives
If using actives such as vitamin C, niacinamide serum, retinol or AHA/BHA, apply these first on clean, dry skin and allow them to fully absorb. The moisturiser will seal in and protect skin after.
Dispense 1–2 Pumps
Pump a pea- to dime-sized amount (1–2 pumps) onto your fingertips. A little goes a long way — start with less and add more if your skin feels dry, especially in winter or after using drying actives.
Apply in Upward Circular Motions
Gently massage the lotion into the face and neck using upward strokes to encourage circulation. Avoid tugging at delicate eye area skin. Allow 30–60 seconds for full absorption before the next step.
Finish with Sunscreen (Morning Only)
In your morning routine, layer a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen on top as the final step. This moisturiser does not contain UV filters, so dedicated SPF protection is essential during the day.

Frequently asked questions
FAQYes — CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion (the non-SPF version) is considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The formula does not contain retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical UV filters or any other ingredients typically advised against during pregnancy. Its key actives — ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and glycerin — are all well-established as pregnancy-compatible. As always, consult your midwife or healthcare provider before adding any new product to your routine during pregnancy.
Yes — the CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion is widely regarded as fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis / malassezia) safe. The formula does not contain problematic fermented ingredients, high concentrations of fungal-feeding fatty acid esters or other known Malassezia triggers. Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate and Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate are present in very small concentrations as emulsifiers and are generally accepted as safe at these levels. If you have a severe or active fungal acne breakout, always patch test and consult a dermatologist.
Absolutely — CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion is one of the best companion moisturisers for use alongside strong actives. Its ceramide complex actively helps repair and support the skin barrier that can become compromised when using retinol or chemical exfoliants (AHA/BHA). Apply your active serums first on clean skin, allow them to absorb, then apply this moisturiser on top. With retinol beginners, this technique (called "sandwich method") can reduce irritation. It also works well layered under vitamin C serums in the morning. Niacinamide in this formula is compatible with all these actives.
CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion is suitable for nearly all skin types, but it is particularly well-suited for normal, dry, combination and sensitive skin. It is dermatologist-recommended for those with eczema, rosacea and reactive skin due to its fragrance-free, allergen-free profile. Acne-prone skin types also benefit from its non-comedogenic, oil-free formula and the sebum-regulating properties of niacinamide. Those with very oily skin may prefer the CeraVe PM Facial Moisturising Lotion which has a slightly lighter, more matte-finish formula.
You will notice immediate improvements in skin comfort and softness from the very first application. Within 1–2 weeks of consistent use, dryness, tightness and flakiness typically reduce significantly. Barrier-strengthening effects from the ceramide complex become measurable at around 4 weeks. Niacinamide's brightening and pore-minimising benefits require consistent use for 8–12 weeks to become clearly visible. For best results, use twice daily (morning and evening) as part of a consistent skincare routine.
This moisturiser is applied as step 4 in your routine — after cleansing, toning/essence and any serums or actives, but before sunscreen (in the morning). The general rule is to apply skincare from thinnest to thickest consistency: cleanser → toner → serum → moisturiser → SPF (AM only). In the evening, it can be your final step after serums and before any sleeping masks or facial oils if you use them. Always apply sunscreen on top in the morning, as this moisturiser contains no UV filters.
No — CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion is officially non-comedogenic (comedogenicity rating: 1/5) and has been dermatologist-tested to confirm it will not clog pores. The formula is oil-free, and its key emollients (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dimethicone) score very low on comedogenicity scales. Niacinamide in the formula actively helps regulate sebum production and reduce the risk of breakouts. It is one of the most widely recommended moisturisers by dermatologists for acne-prone patients.
CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion has a Period After Opening (PAO) of 12 months, indicated by the open-jar symbol on the packaging. The 52ml bottle used twice daily (morning and evening with 1–2 pumps per application) typically lasts 1–2 months. Store in a cool, dry location away from heat and direct sunlight to maintain the stability of the ceramide complex and hyaluronic acid throughout the PAO period. The pump dispenser design also helps minimise contamination and oxidation, extending effective shelf life.
Verdict: CeraVe Facial Moisturising Lotion is a dermatologist-favourite for excellent reasons. Its clinically proven ceramide complex, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid formula delivers genuine skin barrier repair and lasting hydration in a lightweight, fragrance-free package that won't clog pores. Whether you're managing sensitive skin, recovering a compromised barrier, or simply looking for the most reliable daily moisturiser at a budget-friendly price, this formulation punches well above its weight. Its pregnancy-safe, fungal-acne-safe, and universally compatible profile make it one of the most trustworthy everyday moisturisers available without a prescription.

Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
