Safety & compatibility
SAFESelenium Sulfide 1% is FDA Pregnancy Category C. When used on the scalp as a shampoo (rinse-off), systemic absorption is minimal through intact skin. Most physicians consider it low-risk for scalp use during pregnancy, but you should consult your OB-GYN before use. The Selsun Blue brand advises against use during pregnancy on body surfaces (e.g., for tinea versicolor).
No significant excretion into breast milk is expected given very low skin absorption from intact scalp. WHO lists selenium sulfide as compatible with breastfeeding when used as directed. Consult your healthcare provider and avoid applying near the chest area.
This formula contains Cocamide DEA and Cocamidopropyl Betaine — both fatty acid-derived surfactants that can feed Malassezia yeast and trigger fungal acne breakouts. If you are fungal acne-prone, this shampoo is not recommended for skin contact. Note: The older formula also contained DMDM Hydantoin.
The primary ingredients in this formula are water-soluble surfactants and do not occlude pores. With a comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5, this shampoo is unlikely to clog pores when properly rinsed from the scalp and skin.
As a rinse-off scalp treatment, this shampoo does not conflict with topical retinoids, vitamin C serums, AHAs, or BHAs used in your facial routine. It works independently as a scalp-only treatment.
Selenium Sulfide can cause discoloration or yellowing of light blonde, grey, or chemically treated hair. If you have color-treated or bleached hair, rinse thoroughly for at least 5 minutes after each use and consult a hair professional before beginning regular use.
This formula contains Cocamidopropyl Betaine and Cocamide DEA — known contact allergens for some individuals. Those with highly reactive or sensitive scalps should patch test before full use.
Gluten is not an ingredient in Selsun Blue shampoos. The product is not certified gluten-free, but gluten-containing materials are not used in the formula.
Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSSelenium Sulfide 1% (Active)Proven
The only FDA-approved active ingredient in this formula, Selenium Sulfide is a potent antifungal and cytostatic agent that is the gold standard in dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis treatment. It works through two complementary mechanisms: inhibiting Malassezia yeast overgrowth and slowing the abnormal rate of skin cell turnover that produces visible flakes.
- Mechanism: Cytostatic — blocks epidermal cell replication enzymes and inhibits fungal ergosterol biosynthesis
- Efficacy: Clinically proven superior to pyrithione zinc 1% in multiple randomized trials for reducing scalp flaking
- Absorption: Virtually no systemic absorption through intact skin at shampoo concentrations
- OTC maximum: 1% is the highest concentration available without a prescription in the USA
Water (Aqua) Major BaseProven
Purified water forms the aqueous base of this suspension system. It serves as the vehicle that disperses Selenium Sulfide particles and all other functional ingredients, and it is the first ingredient listed — meaning it comprises the largest proportion of the formula.
- Role: Solvent and suspension medium for active ingredient delivery
- Safety: Universally safe; non-irritating, non-allergenic
Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate Primary SurfactantProven
The primary cleansing surfactant in this formula. Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) is a milder alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), generating rich, dense lather while effectively lifting sebum, product buildup, and fungal debris from the scalp. This formula is specifically SLS-free.
- Function: Anionic surfactant — emulsifies oils and rinses away scalp debris
- vs. SLS: Smaller molecular size than SLS but considered comparably effective for cleansing oily scalps
- Note: Can be stripping for very dry or chemically processed hair with frequent use
TEA-Lauryl Sulfate Co-SurfactantProven
Triethanolamine Lauryl Sulfate acts as a secondary cleansing agent and lather booster, contributing to the formula's characteristically thick, abundant foam that allows thorough scalp coverage. It also helps adjust pH to keep the formula stable.
- Function: Anionic surfactant with pH-buffering properties
- Lather quality: Significantly enhances foam density for even product distribution
Ammonium Laureth Sulfate Co-SurfactantProven
An ethoxylated surfactant that is gentler than its non-ethoxylated counterpart (Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate). It works alongside the primary surfactants to improve mildness, reduce irritation potential, and enhance the overall cleansing performance of the formula.
- Function: Milder anionic surfactant; conditions while cleansing
- Benefit: Reduces overall irritation potential compared to ALS-only formulas
Cocamidopropyl Betaine Amphoteric SurfactantProven
A coconut-derived amphoteric surfactant that stabilizes and modifies the lather from the anionic surfactants, improving foam quality and making it feel creamier and less harsh. It also reduces the overall irritation potential of the surfactant system.
- Function: Lather booster, foam stabilizer, mildness enhancer
- Origin: Derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine
Magnesium Aluminum Silicate Suspension AgentProven
A naturally derived clay mineral (smectite) that is critical to the functional delivery of Selenium Sulfide. It creates the suspension system that keeps the active ingredient evenly dispersed throughout the formula — which is why the bottle must be shaken before each use. When the formula contacts the scalp and is agitated, the suspension breaks and allows selenium sulfide particles to deposit.
- Function: Rheology modifier and thickener that suspends insoluble active particles
- Safety: Non-absorbed; GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) mineral compound
Parfum (Fragrance) ScentPromising
A fragrance blend that contributes to the product's characteristic medicinal scent. The exact composition of the fragrance is proprietary and may include multiple chemical compounds. Some users describe the scent as strong and medicinal, though it does not typically linger after rinsing.
- Function: Masking agent for chemical odor of active ingredients; scent identity
Menthol Active SootherProven
One of the formula's most praised ingredients. Menthol activates TRPM8 (cold-sensitive ion channels) in the scalp, creating an immediate, intense cooling sensation that provides tangible relief from itching and irritation. It also has mild local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory properties.
- Mechanism: TRPM8 receptor agonist — creates cooling sensation without temperature change
- Anti-itch: Counters the itch-scratch cycle by triggering competing nerve sensations
- Anti-inflammatory: Mild anti-inflammatory action helps soothe inflamed scalp tissue
Cocamide DEA Foam BoosterPromising
A coconut oil-derived diethanolamide used as a foam stabilizer and viscosity builder that helps the shampoo maintain its characteristic thick consistency. It enhances the feel of the lather on the scalp.
- Function: Non-ionic surfactant, foam booster, thickener
- Origin: Synthetic derivative of coconut oil fatty acids
DMDM Hydantoin PreservativeProven
A broad-spectrum antimicrobial preservative that prevents microbial contamination and extends the shelf life of the formula. DMDM Hydantoin works by slowly releasing small amounts of formaldehyde over time as a preserving mechanism.
- Function: Formaldehyde-releasing preservative; prevents mold, bacteria, yeast growth in formula
- Concentration: Used at very low levels (typically 0.05–0.2%) in cosmetic formulas
Citric Acid pH AdjusterProven
A naturally derived organic acid (fermented from Aspergillus niger) used to adjust and stabilize the pH of the formula. Maintaining a slightly acidic pH (around 5–6) helps protect the scalp's acid mantle and ensures the formula performs optimally.
- Function: pH buffer; chelating agent; mild preservative booster
- Safety: Widely used and considered safe at functional concentrations
Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose ThickenerProven
A cellulose-derived polymer (HPMC) used as a viscosity modifier and thickening agent that gives the shampoo its smooth, slightly gel-like consistency. It also improves the suspension stability of the Selenium Sulfide particles and enhances the formula's spreadability on the scalp.
- Function: Film-forming polymer; viscosity builder; suspension stabilizer
- Safety: Non-absorbed; inert; widely used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulas
Blue 1 Lake (CI 42090) & CI 17200 ColorantsProven
These FDA-approved synthetic colorants give Selsun Blue its characteristic deep blue color — a distinctive visual identity that has become synonymous with the brand. Blue 1 Lake is an insoluble form of Brilliant Blue that provides stable, consistent color. CI 17200 (Red 33) is used to adjust the hue.
- Function: Aesthetic colorants — no therapeutic role
- Safety: FDA-approved for cosmetic use; non-absorbed as rinse-off colorants
Sodium Citrate & Sodium Chloride Formula StabilizersProven
Sodium Citrate acts as a buffering agent and chelator that stabilizes the pH system alongside Citric Acid, while Sodium Chloride (common salt) is used as a viscosity modifier to fine-tune the formula's thickness and flow properties.
- Sodium Citrate: pH buffer; chelating agent; preservative synergist
- Sodium Chloride: Viscosity modifier; thickening aid for surfactant systems
- Safety: Both GRAS ingredients with excellent safety profiles

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEUse as your shampoo step 2–3 times per week. Apply conditioner to mid-lengths and ends only (avoid scalp). Leave shampoo on scalp for 2–3 minutes before rinsing for best results. Shake bottle well before each use.
How to use
HOW TO USEShake the Bottle Well
Shake vigorously for 5–10 seconds before each use. This breaks the magnesium aluminum silicate suspension and distributes the Selenium Sulfide evenly throughout the formula — this step is critical for effectiveness.
Wet Hair and Scalp Thoroughly
Saturate hair and scalp with warm water. Good pre-wetting helps the shampoo spread evenly and activate the lathering system for full scalp coverage.
Apply and Massage into Scalp
Apply a generous amount (roughly a quarter-sized amount for short hair, more for longer hair) directly to the scalp. Massage thoroughly using your fingertips — not nails — working the lather into all areas of the scalp including the hairline and nape.
Leave On for 2–3 Minutes
Allow the formula to sit on the scalp for 2 to 3 minutes. This contact time is essential — it allows the Selenium Sulfide to adhere to the scalp surface and perform its antifungal and cytostatic action. Do not skip this step.
Rinse Thoroughly
Rinse completely with water. For light, blonde, grey, or color-treated hair, rinse for a minimum of 5 minutes to prevent potential discoloration from Selenium Sulfide. Repeat the shampoo application if desired.
Frequency of Use
Use at least twice a week for the first two weeks. Once dandruff is under control, reduce to once weekly or as needed for maintenance. Do not exceed the recommended frequency. If no improvement after 4–6 weeks, consult a dermatologist or physician.

Scalp type compatibility
SKIN TYPESIdeal for oily scalps where Malassezia thrives. The powerful surfactant system deeply cleanses excess sebum while the selenium sulfide targets fungal overgrowth triggered by oil production.
Effective against dandruff-related flaking, but the potent surfactants may further dry the scalp with frequent use. Always follow with conditioner on the lengths and limit use to 2–3 times per week.
The primary target demographic for this formula. Highly effective for moderate to severe seborrheic dermatitis, providing significant relief from itching, flaking, and redness with consistent use.
Contains known contact allergens (Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamide DEA, fragrance). May cause irritation in very reactive individuals. Patch test recommended; consult a dermatologist if scalp is inflamed or broken.
NOT recommended for fungal acne-prone skin. The formula contains fatty acid-derived surfactants (Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine) that can feed Malassezia and trigger breakouts on the forehead, temples, or back.
Use with significant caution. Selenium Sulfide can cause yellowing or discoloration of blonde, grey, or bleached hair. If used, rinse thoroughly for 5+ minutes and consult your colorist before starting treatment.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESNearly identical active ingredient at the same 1% Selenium Sulfide concentration. Amazon's private-label version at a comparable price point — a virtually equivalent therapeutic formula. Lacks menthol and has a milder scent, but delivers the same antifungal mechanism.
Also contains 1% Selenium Sulfide (Clinical Strength line) but in a more conditioning formula. Better for dry or damaged hair due to added moisturizers. Lacks the intense menthol cooling effect. More widely distributed in stores. A good option for those who find Selsun Blue too drying.
Uses Pyrithione Zinc 1% instead of Selenium Sulfide — a different antifungal mechanism that is gentler but may be less potent for severe cases. Much milder on hair and gentler fragrance. A better starting point for mild dandruff or first-time users, or as a rotating shampoo alongside Selsun Blue.

Frequently asked questions
FAQSelsun Blue Medicated contains Selenium Sulfide 1%, which is classified as FDA Pregnancy Category C. This means animal reproductive studies have not been conducted and there are no controlled human studies during pregnancy. When used strictly as a scalp shampoo (rinse-off application on intact skin), systemic absorption is considered minimal and most physicians regard it as relatively low risk for scalp-limited use during pregnancy. However, the brand advises against use on body surfaces during pregnancy, and some manufacturers state the product should not be used by pregnant women. Always consult your OB-GYN or midwife before using any medicated shampoo during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. For breastfeeding, WHO considers it compatible when used as directed — but do not apply near the chest and rinse thoroughly before nursing.
No — Selsun Blue Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is NOT considered safe for those prone to fungal acne (malassezia folliculitis). While the active ingredient Selenium Sulfide is antifungal, the formula's inactive ingredients include Cocamide DEA and Cocamidopropyl Betaine — both fatty acid-derived surfactants that can feed Malassezia yeast and trigger fungal acne breakouts on the forehead, temples, jawline, chest, or back. If the shampoo runs down your body during rinsing, it may trigger breakouts. If you are fungal acne-prone, consider a malassezia-safe alternative such as Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo or a pyrithione zinc shampoo formulated without fatty acids and esters.
Yes — Selsun Blue Medicated Shampoo is a rinse-off scalp treatment and does not interact with topical actives like retinoids, vitamin C, AHA (glycolic/lactic acid), or BHA (salicylic acid) used in your facial skincare routine. These products are applied to different areas (face vs. scalp) and are used at different times. There is no known interaction between Selenium Sulfide shampoo and any common topical actives. Continue your facial skincare routine as normal alongside this scalp treatment.
Selsun Blue Medicated is best suited for oily, dandruff-prone, or seborrheic dermatitis-affected scalps. It is particularly effective when dandruff is caused by Malassezia fungal overgrowth — the most common cause of dandruff. It is excellent for those with moderate to severe dandruff who haven't seen results with milder pyrithione zinc shampoos. It is not the best choice for very dry, flaky scalps where dryness (rather than fungal overgrowth) is the primary cause, for color-treated or bleached hair, or for those prone to fungal acne. Normal scalps with fungal dandruff are the ideal use case.
Most users experience immediate scalp itch relief from the menthol after the very first wash. Visible reduction in flaking typically begins within 1–2 weeks of twice-weekly use. Significant dandruff control is usually achieved within 3–6 weeks of consistent treatment. If you do not see meaningful improvement after 4–6 weeks of proper use (2x weekly, 2–3 minutes contact time), consult a dermatologist — you may need a stronger treatment (2.5% selenium sulfide, available by prescription in the USA, or OTC in Canada/EU), a different active ingredient such as ketoconazole, or evaluation for other scalp conditions such as psoriasis or contact dermatitis.
Selsun Blue Medicated Shampoo is used as your shampoo step, replacing your regular shampoo 2–3 times per week. Apply to wet scalp, massage thoroughly, leave on for 2–3 minutes, then rinse completely. You may repeat if desired. Follow with a conditioner applied to mid-lengths and ends only (avoiding the scalp). On days when you are not using Selsun Blue, you may use a gentle, regular shampoo. Do not layer it with other medicated scalp treatments without consulting a doctor. As this is a rinse-off treatment, it does not affect your leave-in products, styling, or facial skincare routine.
Selsun Blue Medicated Shampoo has a comedogenic rating of approximately 1 out of 5 — considered non-comedogenic for most users. The primary ingredients are water-soluble surfactants designed to rinse cleanly from the scalp without leaving pore-clogging residue. When properly rinsed, this formula is unlikely to clog hair follicles or pores on the scalp. However, if the shampoo runs down onto body skin and is not rinsed away, some users may experience breakouts due to the fatty acid-derived surfactants (Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine) — particularly those who are fungal acne-prone. Always rinse thoroughly and rinse your body after using this shampoo.
Selsun Blue Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo has a period after opening (PAO) of 24 months. The formula's preservative system (including DMDM Hydantoin) maintains product integrity for up to 2 years after first opening when stored at room temperature (68°F–77°F / 20°C–25°C) away from excessive heat and direct sunlight. Do not freeze the product. The 11 fl oz (325 ml) bottle typically lasts 2–4 months with twice-weekly use of a normal application amount, well within the product's shelf life.
Verdict: Selsun Blue Medicated Anti-Dandruff Shampoo remains one of the most effective and accessible OTC dandruff treatments available. Its 1% Selenium Sulfide formula has decades of clinical use behind it, consistently outperforming pyrithione zinc in head-to-head studies for reducing scalp flaking and fungal overgrowth. The addition of cooling menthol provides genuinely noticeable, immediate itch relief that users consistently praise. At $7–$11 for 11 fl oz, the value proposition is exceptional for a maximum-strength medicated treatment. However, the formula is not for everyone — those with color-treated hair, fragrance sensitivities, fungal acne-prone skin, or formaldehyde releaser concerns should weigh the trade-offs carefully. For moderate to severe dandruff on an oily or normal scalp, this remains a dermatologist- and pharmacist-recommended first-line OTC choice.

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
