Ingredient breakdown
INGREDIENTSSqualane (Olive-Derived) BaseProven
100% plant-derived olive squalane forms the base of this formula. A skin-identical lipid that mimics the skin's natural sebum, providing emolliency, occlusion, and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) prevention with exceptional cosmetic elegance.
- Function: Emollient, barrier support, moisture retention
- Science: Squalane is a saturated hydrocarbon naturally found in human sebum; topical application compensates for the age-related decline in natural squalene production
- Compatibility: Non-comedogenic, compatible with all skin types including acne-prone
L22 Lipid Complex (Jojoba/Macadamia Esters + Phytosterols + Squalene)Proven
A patented skin surface lipid mimetic blend (trade name L22) that replicates the fatty acid, triglyceride, wax ester, cholesterol, and squalene profile of a healthy 22-year-old's skin. Includes Jojoba Oil/Macadamia Seed Oil Esters, Squalene, Phytosteryl Macadamiate, and Phytosterols.
- Clinical Data: Double-blind studies showed L22 outperformed olive oil and caprylic/capric triglyceride for barrier recovery at 60 minutes post-application
- Long-term Results: After 2 weeks of use, L22 showed significantly better barrier repair and hydration than petrolatum (the gold standard occlusive)
- Mechanism: Replenishes the decline of lipids within the skin barrier that occurs with ageing
Sunflower Seed Oil UnsaponifiablesProven
The unsaponifiable fraction of sunflower oil — the portion that resists saponification and contains skin-beneficial phytosterols, tocopherols, and squalene. Soothes and strengthens the barrier by replenishing natural lipids.
- Function: Soothing, skin-identical ingredient, emollient
- Key Benefit: Rich in phytosterols that help reduce visible signs of dryness and support barrier integrity
Nannochloropsis Oceanica ExtractPromising
A microalgae extract rich in omega-3 fatty acids (especially EPA) and carotenoids. Provides antioxidant protection and supports the skin's lipid barrier with essential fatty acids not easily obtained from terrestrial plants.
- Source: Marine microalgae, sustainably cultivated
- Benefits: Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and barrier-supporting properties from high EPA content
Echium Plantagineum Seed OilPromising
Also known as viper's bugloss oil, this is one of the richest plant sources of stearidonic acid (SDA, an omega-3) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA, an omega-6). Supports skin barrier function and has anti-inflammatory properties.
- Omega Profile: High in alpha-linolenic acid, stearidonic acid, and gamma-linolenic acid
- Function: Helps moisturise, reduce inflammation, and support long-term barrier health
Cardiospermum Halicacabum (Balloon Vine) ExtractPromising
A tropical plant extract traditionally used for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Helps calm irritated skin and may reduce the appearance of redness.
- Traditional Use: Used in herbal medicine for skin inflammation and eczema
- Function: Anti-inflammatory, skin conditioning
Salicornia Herbacea (Glasswort) ExtractPromising
A halophyte (salt-tolerant plant) extract that acts as a natural humectant. Helps attract and retain moisture in the skin while providing soothing benefits.
- Function: Moisturiser/humectant, the only water-attracting ingredient in this oil formula
- Source: Coastal plant adapted to extreme conditions, rich in minerals and betaines
Tocopherol (Vitamin E)Proven
A natural antioxidant that protects both the skin and the formula itself from oxidative damage. Helps stabilise the oils in the formula while providing skin-conditioning benefits.
- Function: Antioxidant, skin conditioning, formula stabiliser
- Note: Present at a low concentration primarily for formula stability rather than active treatment

Where it fits in your routine
ROUTINEUse AM and/or PM before moisturiser. Can also be applied before retinoid to act as a buffer for sensitive skin. In the AM, always follow with SPF.
How to use
HOW TO USEDispense 1 Pump
Apply 1 pump of oil into the palms of your hands. The lid features a measurement guide to show the ideal amount. A little goes a long way.
Warm Between Palms
Gently rub palms together for a few seconds to warm the oil. This helps it spread evenly and absorb more effectively into the skin.
Press and Massage
Press onto the face, neck, and décolleté. Massage gently using upward and outward motions. The oil is also excellent for facial massage.
Follow with Moisturiser
Allow the oil to absorb fully before applying your moisturiser. In the AM, finish with SPF. Repeat if skin feels particularly dry or irritated.

Skin type compatibility
SKIN TYPESIdeal match. The squalane base and lipid complex deeply nourish dry skin while the barrier-repair action prevents further moisture loss.
Fragrance-free, minimal ingredients, and packed with calming botanicals. Specifically formulated with sensitivity in mind.
Lightweight enough for combo skin. May feel slightly rich on oily zones — use 1 pump only and focus on drier areas.
Squalane is non-comedogenic and well-tolerated, but oily skin types may prefer to use this only at night or when skin feels compromised.
Low comedogenic rating (1/5). However, not suitable for fungal acne. Works well to calm retinoid-related irritation in acne routines.
The L22 complex directly addresses the age-related decline in skin surface lipids. Improves firmness, elasticity, and suppleness over time.

Budget-friendly alternatives (dupes)
DUPESPure squalane only — provides the emollient base but lacks the L22 lipid complex, botanical extracts, and barrier-repair blend that make the Support Oil a multi-functional treatment. Great starting point for squalane beginners.
Another pure squalane formula at an ultra-affordable price. Provides similar base moisturisation but without the calming botanical actives, L22 barrier complex, or clinical data behind the Support Oil.
Sugarcane-derived squalane in a larger bottle with the added benefit of being fungal acne safe (unlike the Support Oil). Lacks the specialised botanical actives and L22 complex but delivers solid basic barrier support.

Frequently asked questions
FAQYes. The Support Oil contains no retinoids, salicylic acid, hydroquinone, chemical sunscreens, or any other ingredients flagged as concerns during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The formula is made up entirely of plant-derived oils, botanical extracts, and skin-identical lipids that are considered safe for use during pregnancy and nursing. WIMJ (What's In My Jar) also confirms it as suitable for pregnancy.
No. The Support Oil is not considered fungal acne safe. It contains Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Echium Plantagineum Seed Oil, and fatty acid-rich esters that can potentially feed malassezia yeast. If you are prone to fungal acne, consider a pure squalane product like The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane (sugarcane-derived) or Pipette Baby Oil as fungal acne-safe alternatives.
Yes. The Support Oil is designed to complement active treatments. Skin Rocks specifically recommends using it alongside their retinoid range — you can apply the oil before your retinoid to act as a buffer for sensitive skin, or after your retinoid for nourishment. It is also compatible with vitamin C serums, AHAs, and BHAs. Simply apply the oil after your water-based actives and before your moisturiser.
The Support Oil is formulated for all skin types but is ideal for dry, dehydrated, and sensitive skin. It excels at calming sensitised, irritated, or compromised skin. It also works beautifully for mature skin due to the L22 lipid complex that mimics young adult skin's lipid profile. Oily skin types can use it at night or during skin emergencies. Combination skin types may prefer to focus application on drier zones.
Many users report instant soothing and comfort from the very first application. In clinical trials, 96% of participants noticed immediate soothing after first use. Meaningful improvements in redness (up to 42%), texture (up to 35%), and hyperpigmentation (up to 22%) were measured after 4 weeks of daily use in an independent clinical study of 47 participants. Long-term barrier improvements build progressively over 2+ months of consistent use.
Apply The Support Oil after cleansing, toning, serums, and eye cream — but before your moisturiser. AM routine example: Cleanse → Tone → Eye Cream → The Support Oil → Moisturiser → SPF. PM routine example: Double Cleanse → Retinoid → Eye Cream → The Support Oil → Moisturiser. For sensitive skin, you can apply the oil before your retinoid to act as a buffer.
The Support Oil has a low comedogenic rating of 1 out of 5. The squalane base is non-comedogenic, and the overall formula is lightweight and well-tolerated by most skin types including acne-prone skin. However, individual reactions vary, so a patch test is always recommended. Note that this product is not recommended for those with fungal acne specifically.
The Support Oil has a PAO (Period After Opening) of 12 months. Because you only need 1 pump per application, the 30ml bottle typically lasts 3–6 months depending on frequency of use (AM only vs AM and PM). Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight for best results. The squalane base is highly stable and resistant to oxidation.
Verdict: Skin Rocks The Support Oil is a premium, clinically-tested barrier-repair oil that truly delivers on its promise as a "fire extinguisher" for sensitised skin. The thoughtful formulation — built on a squalane base with the scientifically-backed L22 lipid complex — sets it apart from basic face oils. Clinical data showing up to 42% redness reduction is impressive, and the clean 14-ingredient list gives confidence to those with reactive skin. The main drawback is the premium price point at $75/£60 for 30ml, though the small per-use amount means a bottle lasts months. Not suitable for fungal acne sufferers, and those wanting anti-ageing actives should look to the Skin Rocks Retinoid range instead. For anyone dealing with barrier damage, sensitivity, or redness, this is one of the most elegant and effective soothing oils on the market.

Just because a product is not free from a common preference does not mean it's a bad product! You can make a personal decision whether or not you want to use a product that contains these ingredients or not - click the labels of the preference to read more about them.
Quick Product Notes
Ever used a product that promised a certain effect but provided no results? It might not have contained any notable ingredients that could have been responsible for that promised effect. It doesn't matter what the marketing or packaging «promises» it can do, if it doesn't contain anything that can help - then the likelihood of it helping is low.
We help you identify key notable ingredients that have been shown to help with effects such as acne-fighting, brightening, UV-protection, wound healing & anti-aging to help you achieve your skincare goals smarter. Please note that different notable ingredients have varying levels of research behind them, some are extremely well proven yet some have mixed research in their efficacy.
Just because a product doesn't contain any notable ingredients doesn't mean it's bad. And a product with notable ingredients (or even many) doesn't necessarily guarantee the efficacy of the product performing these effects either. There are other factors such as ingredient quality, concentration and formulation that will ultimately determine this.
Be smart and use this as just a starting point for you to make more informed and smarter choices and compare it with reviews to see if the product is right for you

Ingredient Safety Breakdown refers to the percentage % of ingredients in different risk categories as classified by EWG (Environment Working Group) if they are available. There are almost endless cosmetic ingredients and they are one of the few organisations globally that have assigned ratings to a lot of the more commonly used ingredients which is why we reference them.
EWG is seen by many to be more on the alarmist side in their assignment of health ratings resulting in rating ingredients as riskier than they actually are. We recommend using this a reference point rather than a strict guide of ingredient safety and to always do further research if into ingredients that you may find suspect.
