Yes. Most unopened makeup keeps about three years from production. Once opened, the clock depends on the product: eye products have the shortest life and powders the longest. The open-jar (PAO) symbol on each pack says how many months it keeps after opening.
General cosmetics guidance for makeup, not a brand promise. A date or open-jar symbol printed on your pack always wins.
Batch codes are stamped on the base of compacts and palettes, on the crimp of tubes and on the bottom of bottles. The open-jar symbol is on the pack or on the box.
As a rule of thumb: mascara and liquid eyeliner 3 to 6 months, foundation and concealer about 12 months, lipstick 12 to 18 months, powders about 24 months. The open-jar symbol on your pack overrides this.
Old makeup can harbour bacteria, especially products used with fingers, sponges or wands, and that can irritate skin or eyes. Replace anything whose smell or texture has changed.
Enter the brand and the batch code from the pack into the checker on this page. It decodes the production date for the brands whose codes we can read.
